Review of the RazoRock Baby Smooth razor, including a return of the I Coloniali Mango Oil soap and the BiG Shave 2014 LE brush, and a new aftershave, the Myrsol F./Extra.
I discuss the merits and tradeoffs of the Baby Smooth and talk about the balance between mild, aggressive, and efficient razors. So many great options available to today's wetshaver, something for everybody!
Intro music is a snippet from Spygame from Parov Stelar - wonderful electro swing.

Awesome video! Aftershaves are the next step on finding the one that really works for my skin. One that is not so drying would help. Amazing shave and very nice razor. Thank you once again.

I love your intelligent reviews! Razor philosophy indeed. Many thanks.

Excellent. Yes, chatter is indeed a term I use for such razors. When there's a good bit of blade showing and the gap is quite wide, the blade can catch on tough hairs causing blade 'chatter' or 'flex'. I have the same problem on my neck as you Michael, more so on the right hand side, not really an issue with something like an Edwin Jagger, but I have to be mindful when using something more aggressive. Even a Merkur 37C feels a tad uncomfortable. I like the way that razor bends the blade, looks like you can hold the razor handle more parallel to the face when using it. Good video Michael! All the best. Darren.

Michael Freedberg Just picked one up from Joe at IB, so glad I did! Truly the best DE razor I've ever used. Thanks for a very informative review of the baby smooth.

+David Coyote very glad to see Joe did in fact bring them back...and I will take a tiny bit of credit for helping to convince him to do so (grin)! It really is a great razor, very happy to hear you too are enjoying it.

Back to the past, thanks to this video I acquired this razor and after a short learning phase (lightness of the razor, spot angle), it is only pleasure. Since then, I got many other excellent razors but something in this one makes it comes back more than others in my rotation. I even think buying the new aluminum version where blade tabs are covered (as a spare). So, thank's

The angle of the blade, the blade gap -- just makes for such an easy simple shave. Yes, for some it is too mild, but not for me. Love this razor. Get a spare, that's a good idea!

That's it, I received the new version of the baby mooth ba and I don't know if it is psychological (possible) or if the machining is more successful on this copy but I find it even better than the 1st version. To return to this razor, he taught me one thing, humility. About a year ago, I had a stellar shave (and very fast in 2 passes). No immediate irritation on my skin but half an hour later, my skin became red like a crayfish and started to itch. It took me two days to regain a normal skin. Unconsciously, I thought that the mildness of this razor allowed me all extravagance, especially that of pressing more than necessary the razor on my skin. Back to my shaves with the vigilance that I would have given to the great mower, the R41. The lightest possible pressure and a conscious and patient shave. (back to basics). Fine shave (and not a hasty one).

Nice video Michael. I am really enjoying the RSBS. It's a nice addition to the Stealth Slant. I have been getting wonderful irritation free shaves combined with a sharp blade like an Iridium or Kai. Good show.

I know this video is a few years old, but can I just say that I hope I have salt/pepper hair like you when I start to grey? My hair would have to get darker, so it won’t happen, but dang - you look sophisticated with salt/pepper hair! And your intro music fits the look well!

It's just how it has turned out, and the funny thing I never really think about it until it's time for a haircut -- the longer it gets, the more grey you can see! Parov Stelar - still so good!

How does it compare to the merkur 34c HD?

Hi Michael, So basically this razors angle makes the blade slice rather than scrape. This should make it efficient I would have thought. I have many razors but want a mild one that is very efficient. I have the AS-D2 Feather but I get sore when using it as I have to overshave to get smooth. Very disappointing for the high price. I have ordered a BBS stainless so I will soon see. Thanks for the great and informative video. Stay safe Sir, Dave, from England.

I have the Baby Smooth and I really like it. The only negative I would say is it's a little light for my taste. I prefer a heavier razor. But it's part of my regular rotation.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 9 лет назад
Geoff Smith I think you can safely try another handle, paying attention to the threading. The only thing to watch out for is the balance if you swap the standard handle out for something heavier.

HI MICHAEL, i got one of these myself and like you i found it easy to use but due to the light weight i sometimes press too hard in some of my trouble areas.but the razor is very good i guess i have to keep working on the technique! thanks
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 9 лет назад
mapp47 lightweight razors pose a bit of a dilemma, because the lack of weight may cause you to press down to make up for what feels like a lack of action. Not to worry, you will very soon learn to adjust the pressure and just let the razor do the work. This is a very good razor: easy and safe to use, so stick with it!

Thanks Michael.i have to ask,you did a video some time ago comparing the Razorock Slab and Rake.which one was less aggressive to you? regards tony

Hello Micheal, Can you give me a few safety razor suggestions for a (new to safety razors) shaver? My beard is kind of course. Thanks, Speedy
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 9 лет назад
Speedy's Woodshop Speedy, so many choices! The Merkur 34c might be a good one to start with, and I see the Parker 24C recommended on Reddit quite a bit. You should also take a look at the SLAB from Italian Barber or, if you are interested in an Edwin Jagger head style with options for handles, you can look over the kits at Maggards. The key for a coarse beard really is to use a good soap, work up a solid lather, and make sure you are using a blade that works well for you in the razor of choice. The problem here is that, when it comes to shaving, there is no single magic solution or kit that works for everybody. For example, you could also just start off with a Merkur 37C slant, just have to watch the pressure as you learn to shave. Let me know if you have some ideas you want some feedback on, and let's see what we can do.

How does the baby smooth compare to the Rockwell ? R2 and R3 are comfortable for me.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 5 лет назад
Very different feel: the Baby Smooth has very little blade feel and is quite light compared to the Rockwell overall, and I think it is closer to the 3 (between the 3 and 4?). Very smooth shave from the Baby Smooth, and very easy to use!

contrary to popular opinion, i find the bbs to be the most aggressive razor in my cabinet, over antique abc's, black beauty, etc the mildest razor i own is the paa grackle, and i generally use that as my daily driver. when i really want a close shave i use the bbs.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 6 лет назад
Something about the feel of the blade on your skin makes clear that this is an "aggressive" razor, but the level of control over the blade edge make it safer in use than other similarly aggressive razors. I am really glad I got a chance to use this razor, it's likely the one and only time!

Another excellent review. I have the RR Mamba stainless DE razor and its a fantastic razor. Its mild but very safe razor.. How would you compare the RR baby smooth and the Mamba DE razor. I am sitting on the fence for the baby smooth Ti razor. A compare would be great!!
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 6 лет назад
The Baby Smooth is the clear winner for me. The Mamba is good, but not as good as the Baby Smooth; if I had to keep one, it would be the Baby Smooth. Something about the head geometry and blade angle/control just works *very* well for me. Yes, it's mild, but that does not mean it is ineffective or "weak" - it is an excellent razor that feels very safe in use and delivers close comfortable shaves. Baby Smooth - buy one.

Hi Michael, question for you - given the fact that I have sensitive skin AND a thick beard, do you think the Stealth Slant would be a better choice for me?
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 9 лет назад
LorenzoNW I think you will find that a slant razor a good choice given your heavy blood growth, but bear in mind that they are generally hard to find. You can certainly try the Merkur 37C as an alternative, although I do not think it is as good as the Stealth.

Hi Sir great videos; is this mango oil soap still available for purchase?

+Sanjay Patel Sadly I think the soap has been discontinued, but you may be able to find it via some sellers on Amazon or eBay...if you find it and the price is not crazy inflated, get some! Really an excellent soap and the terra cotta dish is an added bonus.

Interesting video but problem with Razorock is trying to get hold of his products is a circus. He made this then discontinued it, then the Stealth and we have the same saga with the Hawk.It's a joke.
