I had an original MJ-90 when I first got started, and found it to be too mild; when Joe came out with the "A" baseplate, I grabbed it and found the same thing you did; it was an amazing shaver and I loved the look! Sadly, the threads on the post in my cap stripped and I haven't replaced it yet. I plan to some day. Thanks for the video, bug guy!
The MJ-90A is a pretty darned good razor. I'd say it's definitely an improvement over the DE89. Sorry yours stripped. Thanks so much for watching as always.
I have an MJ90 and refer to it as my auto pilot razor. You can just toss a blade in and go to town without really thinking about it or putting out any effort.
In other videos you stress ways to minimize water in the soap. Do you load with a wet brush now or do you still use the small plastic cosmetic spatulas to scoop some into a bowl to lather? Do the little spatulas work on a hard puck or do you need to load with a wet brush off the puck? Tom D. in Greenville, NC. TIA
I still think it's best to limit the amount of water you introduce to a soap container. I've been loading from the container with a damp brush lately but I will not pour water in the container:)
Early on in their soap line releases, they had all the buzz. They just don't put out seasonal releases or a lot of new fragrances to get the hype train rolling. That's my theory at least! I think their competitive strength though is their low price.
Very happy you enjoyed the shave, Chris! The MJ90A is my go to travel razor. I use mine with Razorock’s HD handle and it is a super smooth shave every time.
Arto Helenius, Imatra, Finland. Found this channel when watching other shaving channels. So far this seems to be one of best done, yet least subscribed.
Great shave. One mire thing, besides the razors, soaps and aftershaves are the RR brushes. I have a 24mm brush with the same type of knot as on the Big Bruce for well over five years. It is a great brush. Milan Donic, Belgrade, Serbia.
The MJ 90A is a very efficient razor, and great value. It does indeed improve upon the DE89, not the least the threading on the cap. (My DE89's threading is losing all of the plating and deteriorating). The heavy stainless handle works well with the aluminum head. If Razorock makes the MJ 90A head in stainless, I'd grab that up. Had I known that Razorock were coming out with a non-DLC coated stainless Lupo, I would have just waited. I can do without the coating and feel that it will look and feel more appealing and smoother in a polished. I am Robert Spreitzer from Palm Springs, Florida USA. 😉
Yep, I think the MJ90A is an improvement on the MJ in many areas. It's a nice shaver I think. Hold on to that DLC Lupo, it might be worth a little more in the future:)
I shave my head. I can shave almost any razor without a problem. I only have difficulty with One Blade hybrid. there is always something to improve. Maybe the problem is that I should press the razor against my skin?
Conventional wisdom is you should let the weight of the razor do the work but I find that I sometimes need to apply pressure. This is especially true in places on on head. Just be careful when applying more pressure:)
Daniel Barranquilla, Colombia. I have always wondered about the MJ 90 but honestly I feel that with RazoRock it is worth to spend the extra 20-30 and get one of their stainless.
This is the first time I've tried a Goodfellas soap so I'm not sure if they're generally easy to lather. I normally don't revisit the puck too often but I'm not shy about doing it if necessary:)
Really enjoy your Versus vids, man! From a consumer perspective, that is exactly what is going down in the mind when picking what to choose. A side note, Razorock use to make soap branded "Italian Barber" Sensitive in very refreshing aquatic/citrus scents. I still have containers of Aquatico, Primavera, and Fresco Verde. I put them on par with the old Latha soap line, except more scent strength with better scents. They were 5USD each in 2016 and I'm still using them today, what a deal! Hopefully something from GoodFellas might be a good replacement for them. I was like you in noticing that new brand on WCS and wanting reviews! Sorry I'm rambling today, brother but I also remembered Thayers has a new line of "Gentleman's Collection" shaving cream in a tube on amazon. Might make for a fun vid sometime if you haven't already tried it. Peace!
Thanks so much for watching Logan. Yes, I remember those soaps well:) IB regularly brings terrific value to the table. I'm a big fan of their value products. I've never tried the Thayer's creams or anything other than Witch Hazel, but I'm sure I will in the future.
Ryan Smurda, Steubenville Ohio. Great shave Chris. I agree Razorock products are some of the best values/deals in wet shaving and great quality for the price.
The MJ-90A for me is my #1, followed by my Timeless .68 Stainless and Titanium and my Rockwell 6S! The MJ-90A is a bit more efficient with 316 stainless and aluminum - outstanding IMO!
Another great video, Chris. I like the two-tone look of that razor. I recently purchased an iKon X3 blemished (there was a tiny scratch) aluminum slant head for $17. I paired it with a black bamboo styled handle from WCS. It's a great shaver, and I really like the look of the black and silver together. Cheers!
Eivind Kaisen, Bergen, Norway. The ‘Abyss’o is very much in the same scent family as RazoRock’s ‘Irish Countryside’, which is slightly more open and refreshing, slightly more ‘acidic’ (and is also Italian made). Both work well too.
Thanks so much for watching Eivind. I didn't feel they were quite as similar as you do but I do get some similarity between them. I get a lot more aqua type scent from this one as compared to Irish Countryside.
Jim Combs - Fairfield Township, Ohio. Great video! soap sounds great. I personally like the 89 inspired heads and covering the end caps of the blades seems beneficial. Have a good upcoming week and looking forward to more content.
Thanks for the great video Chris. I don't have the MJ90 but I have several RR razors and enjoy seeing the great advancement they have made over the years. I'm not good at math but I think I'd like the square root:) All the best, William in Chillicothe Ohio
Excellent shave and video Chris. I have that razor and it's fantastic especially with a vintage Brazilian made Gillette Platinum Plus blade in there. My Edwin Jagger DE89 took a crap after 4 years of use. The original handle took a crap so I swapped it out for my Muhle R41 handle and put the original DE89 handle on my R41 and it worked for a little while until the bottom base plate took a crap. I ended up buying this razor over the DE89.
Really glad you used that soap Chris I've been wanting to know how well it worked. Looked like a nice lather and shave. Your vids really help to look at things out there that might be good products before I buy them so thanks again for the content. Tim Brown Parrish Al
Jason D....Pittsburgh, PA. Great shave Chris, will have to try that soap as it sounds like a good price per volume and I’m also I’m becoming a fan of aqua scents.
Good shave my friend! Enjoy your day! Oh and I'm happily to report that I had a darn good shave with the lupo last night. I used a different blade and soap with it and had a pretty good outcome. I think this razor is going to be keeper after all.
Hi Chris nice shave bud. Never used a MJ90 since the wife had bought a DE89 for me as a bday present. It is a good comfortable shaver. I don’t have any DLC coated razors like your Lupo. Other then color, does the coating provide anything else to the table for you? Steve
Nice shave! If you wanna try an other Goodfellas Smile soap with an amazing scent, i would recommend the Furiah. Leather scent. Love it! It's like an not so extrem Spitfire. 😁
Hey Chris, are you willing to ship giveaways internationally? I won an iKon Bamboo Handle a couple of years back but never received it because you would not/could not ship internationally at the time.
Adrian Dima, Brasov, Romania Hey Chris, count me in for the giveaway. Btw, if you like aquatic scents you should try Sea Citrus from the same artisan, Goodfellas Smile. Awesome aqua orange scent. Greetings from Romania!
