Sir i have been building for over 50 years and every time i have the pleasure of watching what you are doing i'm learning things that make my builds in the future simpler. Have never been a power boater more a glider/sailing person, but looking for the next challenge. watching you build the way you do is inspiring. As for me the more boat builders you show the better. More very knowledgeable builders spreading their knowledge the more modelers in general due to the availability of said knowledge . I do not know enough about building a powerboat to make suggestions on build content .

Man I am new to you but,love your videos!I have been doing some rebuilds of boats and am very good at fiberglass and wood working after working in car audio for over 30yrs.After an accident that left me unable to do large builds anymore I got back into rc’s again but do electric motors and fast ones.I am wanting to design a stable 100mph 40” hydroplane and have learned so much seeing the builds.I have a 17” tunnel hull plastic though that I have just ridiculously fast,but will not stay planted over 54mph on glass and 36-38mph in ripples.I also do street builds and love em all!People have no idea the same laws of physics apply to our rc’s when they are true hobby grade👍

I'm trackin' right with ya! I've raced a little bit of everything in my lifetime, and been very successful at all of them, but nothing I've done was nearly so difficult to master as RC hydroplanes. I guess that's why I keep coming back to them also... Such a fun challenge! Good luck with your projects. You can do it!

Scott, Ive been building and flying RC airplanes since '78. Started with Guillows kits in the early '70s. I Love watching these videos. I was published in Boat Magazine Feb '05, the St Louis article on the last page. I took the high-speed boat photos at a local race, and I did the story with a race buddies help. I built a Dumas Tunnel nitro from a jig once. I have owned a few smaller boats and would love to try one of your plans. I also really enjoy your race and pit footage.

M5 Performance Hydroplanes - Scott Meyers I am from Colorado and have raced in New Mexico and Texas as well. The 1/8 scale class was not and I think is still not big in these states. My work schedule kind of killed it for me in the early 90s. I now have to work most weekends. It is great that you are willing to share information. Sharing info was not common when I raced. I guess that is still a part of racing at any level. On the other hand, my brother and I had some great times racing that were awesome and that I won’t ever forget. The cost to build a competitive boat could certainly add up but we always thought it was a relatively cheap way to race at a serious level. The racers in Washington were almost always way ahead of us especially in the scale class. Raced a few times against Jerry Dunlap and Jerry Wright who I believe are both still racing. Also had a few motors built by Rod Garrety who I understand is no longer alive. Great engine guy and a nice guy.
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
@@mikepratkelis8274 - Thanks for the note. It's fun getting to know other like-minded people. I guess you would have a pretty long drive from Colorado to race with us huh? C'mon man... Where's your commitment? Just kidding.... Jerry and Jerry haven't raced scale with RCU in some time. They may still be doing some stuff with the division guys but I don't know. They're "West siders" who race only in the North Seattle area. I live in the SE corner of the state and travel west for the RCU events but not Div 8. You're absolutely right about racers not sharing, and I remember what it was like trying to get started in the sport... Everyone just let the new guy hang out to dry instead of helping out. Fortunately it's changing now that everyone has realized that the sport is fading and we desperately need new blood. It's one of the main reasons I do these videos. I love racing and I love the competition so I'll help any way I can. At least until you start catching up to me. At that point you're on your own!

Scott - I've enjoyed all of your RC Hydroplane videos. I enjoy your approach to boat design/re-design, building/re-building, adding "lightness", video presentation, and narration. +++ I noticed that the turn fins on your boats are "flat" and not curved. Are curved or bent turn fins allowed where you race? In the Midwest, nearly everyone who races hydros have curved turn fins. One suggestion on this video - I think your videos would be even better if you were to keep your head or camera a little more steady, and not "look" back and forth, side to side so quickly. I almost experienced motion-sickness on this video. I have noticed this only on a few of your videos. Your other videos are smooth and just fine. Keep up the good work overall! I'll be watching.
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Thanks Dave, I really appreciate the input. As you can probably tell, most of my videos are shot with the camera on my phone which gives me only one free hand to work with. Recently I've been experimenting with a GoPro strapped to my head so I can use both hands in an effort to show more actual work, but I tend to forget it's there and move around too much. I'm working on it! Now about turn fins... They do seem to be kinda like vocal accents, different in different parts of the country. Same with rudders; Some on the left, some on the right. Which way is best, I don't know. I do know that all successful full sized hydroplanes use a straight fin, so maybe that's why we tend to do the same. My personal experience has been that a curved fin seems a bit more finicky. Great when it's right, terrible when it's not. Also seems that any potential left rudder needed at speed with a curved fin usually results with the boat upside down. Maybe I'm just not doing it right, and it certainly wouldn't be the first time!

I’m not new to rc but I’ve never built a boat. I have always wanted to get into boats but for the past year I haven’t been able to decide where to start. I have been trying to learn much as possible to make an educated decision on what I decide to try to build. Is there a model you would recommend for a 1st build etc. I would also like to see in depth video on how you measure out where to mount engine and drill stuffing tube. Love what you’re doing.
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Tough question! So hard to know where to tell you to start. I guess I might suggest you start by buying a used rc boat first just so you can get a feel for it. But on the other hand, you sound like you're experienced enough and not afraid to build, so maybe you'd do ok building one from a kit. The best place I know of to buy wood kits is MLBoatworks; mlboatworksrc.com/ These kits practically assemble themselves, and are very rewarding to build. Use one of the simpler designs, something without wings, just to keep it easy. Whatever you do, get hooked up with someone in your area who's willing to mentor you through the process. I've built and raced lots of different things over the years... Dragsters, karts, motorcycles, road cars, full size hydroplanes, slot cars (fun!), but racing rc hydroplanes is by far the most challenging of them all! Maybe that's why I do it... So fun trying to figure it all out!

Just want to give you a shout out that your videos are very inspiring!! During the covid shutdown i decided to build an offshore cat from scratch 36", and it was a lot of fun and the boat is a blast, but then I caught one of your build videos and was very pleased on your attention to detail and the quality of your builds. (It just makes me want to build) so, the more I watched the more I got inspired so I started to build an 1/8 scale hydro thanks to you LOL. Now I'm soooo hooked that I want to start racing but not sure if I can race with just any hydro or does it have to be one from ML boats? I used to race 1/8 scale nitro and electric on and off road cars, so hopefully I can add 1/8 scale hydro to my list. I would really like to see a video on the rules and strategy of RC hydro racing an actual on the water tutorial on racing would be awesome!!! keep up the great vids and go build something. LOL... классные видео ты делаешь. спасибо. что касается плоское днище спонсона или выпуклое как у ложки то не забывай что плоское днище очень плохо работает на больших волнах, плюс на плоском днище сильнее передаются удары на корпус. в целом я считаю не критичным строение передней части спонсона. В основном его задача помочь быстрее и легче выйти на скорость лодке, а основная часть спонсона на которую опирается лодка она всегда ровная с небольшим углом атаки

@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Thanks! Yes I attach G10 with epoxy. As I mention in the video, G10 is some sort of gee-whiz-hard fiberglass that has a very hard surface, so despite the fact that I scuff it like crazy with 80 grit sandpaper before gluing, it still "lets go" of epoxy fairly easily. But with that said I've never ever had it let go when I don't want it to, so I just love the stuff.

Hey Scott! I just revisited this video cuz I'm finally getting serious about breaking out the plans and getting started. Two questions fer ya. First...Why do you run two gas tanks? Second...Being one of the suckers, err umm, lucky individuals to buy your plans, you mentioned a couple of times that you may make some changes after you run it. If you do end up making changes, would you be willing to do a short video explaining the changes.
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 года назад
Two tanks on nitro, one for gas, at least as I have it configured for now. I like using a small "sump" tank that I can fit sharply tilted under the deck in order to create a very positive pick-up point to avoid gulping air. You can imagine how much the fuel would slosh around in a large tank, especially once most of the fuel is burned out. Funny how your question has me wondering if I shouldn't do that in the gas boats too!
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 года назад
Oh and to your second question, yes I should probably do a follow-up video on The Gasser because there are some changes needed. Heck I've already totally redesigned the boat in my head and can't wait to build the next one!

Hi just started looking your videos, they are very good. Why do RC boats turn right and not left like full size hydros ?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Motor torque... Same reason big boats turn left. Our engines rotate counterclockwise, opposite of full size engines, and the rotational force naturally lifts the left side sponson. So... Turn right and the sponson stays down. Turn left and the dry side becomes the wet side real quick. Thanks for watchin'!
@philipmitchell90
@philipmitchell90 2 года назад
Scott, you have the offset to the outside of the hull (as the boat was designed to turn left. Why not offset to the right?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 года назад
Good observation Philip. The interesting thing about hydroplanes is they don't rely upon weight transfer in the same way that circle track cars do. A hydro is better off having weight positioned away from the turn fin precisely to AVOID a sudden transfer of weight when turning which only upsets the boat. Think of a hydro more like a tetherball where the turn fin acts as the rope and the weight swings around that anchor in a very stable fashion. Of course, we can't overweight the left sponson because we need the boat to fly level and react calmly in the straights too, so everything is a compromise. Lastly, and dealing with a totally different physical effect, our little boats always want to flip themselves over as a result of motor rotation and prop thrust, both forces which act to lift the left sponson. This is why we make right hand turns instead of left... to keep the left sponson down. Having the boat weighted juuust a bit to the left helps counter this effect also. Watch almost any boat blow over and see which sponson comes up first!

Joe Wiebelhaus How did you secure the muffler to the aluminum mounting bracket ? Looks like screws or rivets ? Also, just hi temp tubing on each end of the muffler or clamps and tubing ?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Hi Joe, The angle bracket is held to the muffler with small screws. There's a screw on the one end that holds the two halves of the muffler together, so I use that screw on that end and drill a new hole for the other screw on the other end, using a locknut on the inside. 1/2" silicone tubing fits perfectly for the inlet and outlet and then I use a zip tie for insurance. I found some neat 'low profile' zip ties that look really cool (very important as you know!) SecuriTie CTCH8-60100UVB Low-Profile Cable Ties, 8 Inch., 60 Lbs. Scott, thanks kinda saw that but wanted to make sure. The tune pipe looks like a .45 pipe with the bump or water cooled area at the front ? Going to run the pay n pak this year, i tested it with the NR engines but never gave it enough attention, switched it to CMB for a couple races last year, got cut off 2 times and didnt want to ruin the boat, went back to one of my battleships. I need to get on board with the weight, my hulls finish out around 14 lbs,

Ok, question. I never understood the two fuel tanks. Why not a single tank?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Good question! Maybe I should do a video.... But anyway, here's the thing... With all the hopping and bouncing that these boats do during a race the fuel tends to slosh around so much that the pickup tube can become exposed to air, especially when the fuel level is getting low late in the race. In a single large tank the remaining fuel can slosh way over to one side or the other. So to help alleviate this I use what I'd call a "sump tank" that is very small in order to confine the fuel around the pickup. Is it completely necessary, mmmm maybe not, but it seems to work really well so I stick with it. I HAVE seen guys run single tanks, but they are usually oversized so they'll hold a lot of extra fuel to try and keep the pickup submerged. Extra fuel = extra weight, and if you've watched very many of my videos you already know how I feel about that! Thanks for asking... I like it when my ideas get challenged... it helps me rethink things which is always the first step toward making better stuff!

Ok, makes sense. Have you ever used IV bags? I have seen them used before. Or is that just a preference thing?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Yes but the IV bags won't work for nitro engines. Nitros don't create enough crankcase pressure to integrate a fuel pump into the carbs so they require a pressure line from the expansion chamber connected to the fuel tank to provide the fuel pressure. For this you gotta have a hard tank. The Gasser that I'm building now will use an iv bag and of course, you'll see that in a video soon!

@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 года назад
Yes, definitely. I believe this helps keep the nose up at low speeds and keeps the sponson from diving too deep in the rough, thereby reducing any reaction when the sponson comes back up. In other words, it makes the boat more stable. Your thoughts?
@02155Tony
@02155Tony 2 года назад
@@M5PerfHydros I agree. I did this on stock and mod hydro`s. It made the boat pop quicker to accelerate. It also turned better dumping less air in the turn keeping the sponson higher in the water colunm. Less wetted surface. We also found all radious edges best through out the boat. Adding camber to rear of sponson and same at transom rids you of disturbed air flow. You will never know until you try!! I love your weight reduction methods. @@tomcyrul3863 -- Sorry for the slow reply Tom. I caught a bit of a cold that slowed me a bit but I'm on the upswing now, hopefully. You understand that my plans will build the Staudacher hulls only, right? Stroh Light, Sundek, Eliminator (with minor mods), etc. If this is what you're looking for then yes I'll sell a set if you like. Note that what you'll get is patterns drawn from the actual finished parts as I was building the boat, deck patterns and all. Since they are traced drawings and not technical CAD drawings they are a bit rougher and less "pretty" than technical drawings. Nevertheless, the gas boat you see being built in my videos is completely cut from the same plans, expanded by 20% for gas scale. I don't remember what I was charged for print copies, but if you're interested I'll get a bid from the print shop for you.
