In the videos linked below, we unboxed the French RCIR Menu 2 and field-tested it, supplementing with foraged items to stretch it out.
In this video, we will take the leftovers and again, add foraged items to stretch out these remnants, making the 24 hour pack into two days worth of food in total.
Here's the link to day 1:

I completely missed this video after I enjoyed part one so much! I was about to leave a comment on your foraging and field test video about whether or not you did the rest of the RCIR. Tuna and fruit… that combination would have never crossed my mind. Any fruit and fish, really. I’ve done honey mustard and pecans with fish, but that’s the sweetest I’ve ever gotten. Well, if you’re in a survival situation not only should you not be stingy about safe food, you might as well try out different things to keep yourself interested and alert.

I live in Florida, and foraging here is quite different. I had never considered stretching an MRE with wild foods. That's such a fantastic idea. I made some beautyberry jelly from these odd edible berries here, and it was such a lovely color, light blue/purple. There is nothing I can compare the flavor to. It surprises me that it isn't farmed and harvested and sold all over.

If I was testing a French survival kit I would have brought country butter, cream, and cognac. 😋 All the best to my fellow shrimp-seys Jim Oaxaca

While I was a bit iffy on how the tuna looked (and I don't mean the possible insects, just adding fruit to tuna sounds strange,) both the ad-hoc porridge and that salmon-chestnut medley look spectacular.
@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp 4 года назад
Yeah, I'm not really sure about the tuna - it had quite a strange almost bouncy texture, for a paté - and I think a chopped salad of winter greens would probably have combined better with it. I can't quite decide what I think about the combination of blackberries and fish - it was not horrible, but it was too odd a mix for me to properly gather my impressions
@nogosnoqt
@nogosnoqt 4 года назад
Well, I'm no more familiar. That said, fish in combination with nuts isn't familiar, either, but it seemed like it would work naturally. Perhaps it's just that meat and nuts share a lot of their tastes? I imagine both were savory, had a very complimentary level of sweetness, and combined nicely as protein-rich products. I think I might have some chestnuts nearby. If I find them (and identify them as being just that) I'll have to try your shelling technique. I've many pecan trees, without doubt, though. Are the shells too hard for that, or do you necessarily need to boil or soak them first?
@Attilablabla
@Attilablabla 4 года назад
@@AtomicShrimp that's because it is not, in fact, pâté. Rillettes (most commonly made from pork) are cooked with a lot of fat and (even moreso than pâté, which you can also eat in salads for example) are supposed to be spread unto bread (or in case of the RCIR, crackers). You wouldn't really eat them any other way. You could put pickles/salad/etc on top of that, though. Meat rillettes (as opposed to fish rillettes, which are less fatty, but still more than pâté) are normally covered by a very distinctive thick top layer of white fat/grease (not sure which is the right word here). Anyway I would recommend you test that on weird stuff in a can but I've never seen pork rillettes in a can so that's too bad.
@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp 4 года назад
@nogosnoqt make sure you pick sweet chestnuts, not horse chestnuts - differences explained about 12 minutes into this vide: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-of1CGDQrcKQ.html Pecans would be too tough for this preparation, I think - I would just smash them and pick out the edible pieces
@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp 4 года назад
@Attilablabla - thanks - I think maybe Google Translate led me astray on 'rillettes' - it sounds a bit like some of the potted meat preparations I have seen in Polish shops - more like sausage in a jar than paté

@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp 4 года назад
Sure - insects are a great source of protein and 'good' fats - I tried catching and eating grasshoppers in the video linked below - but in all honesty, I think I burned more calories chasing them than I got from eating them (a butterfly net would solve that though): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T0Kl1d6pQys.html I think next summer, I'm going to try to spend a week eating only what I can forage, including insects.
@omikronweapon
@omikronweapon 4 года назад
I used to catch grasshoppers by squirting them with water from a used shampoo bottle and such. Mind you, I was a kid and they went to my buddy's quails rather than in my mouth. It did the trick though. stunned them long enough to scoop em up. Net would probably be better though, so more of an anecdote than a first-rate suggestion XD

Obviously I’m watching the lot, what’s the story with RU-vid ad revenue? Do I have to watch the whole advert for you to get paid or click through on it? Also, if I watch a video multiple times, do you get revenue? Just asking because I’d like to maximise my input. Edit to say that there’re often a LOT of cross menu items. Sounds daft but it’s because more than one person may request an item and if you’ve only got a box full then you’re boned. Keeping soldiers relatively happy and fed is priority.
