I broke the end of the ignition barrel in my Opel Astra G and when I got the replacement, I decided to transfer the tumblers over from the old barrel to keep the same key, rather than change all the other un-broken locks around the car.
Thanks for making and posting this. I had to learn pretty quickly about ignition barrels on the side of the road today, it's great news to know I won't have to pay extorionate prices for a key replacement. Thank you sir, you are a gentleman.
+Rob McKeown Not a problem, I am glad it helped! When this happened to me I was also at work and my car ended up stranded in the office parking lot for 3 days while I waited for the replacement parts.
+NotAPrune I was parked in an electrical shop's yard in an industrial estate. They were closing the gates in an hour (locking my car in) and I had no idea what the problem was! Being saturday, in small town Ireland, not many mechanics were working and none were doing call-outs. Also, cold Irish rain. Pushed my car out the gate and walked an a mile into to town in search of wifi and coffee, and the good people of the internet came to my rescue :) Went back to my car and had it started in no time. Who needs mechanics when we can learn! Not only have I saved money but I have gained experience that I can share. A good feeling.
+Rob McKeown Exactly! That's why I love working on my own cars. I have been fortunate to never take any of my cars in to a workshop aside from getting new tires fitted.
Thanks for the video. Worked perfectly. Got the full kit for €50 from the breakers and changed the tumblers as you described. Works as good as new. Took an hour but was being careful. Procedure: Remove barrel. Remove black switch on the opposite side. Remove the switch from the wire loom housing and replace with new switch. Swap tumblers to new barrel. Line everything up again and refit the switch, then barrel. Opel/ Vauxhall would only offer a two key solution for €170 parts only. Thanks again.
IMPORTANT - THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF KEYS - IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT ONE THIS IS A FANTASTIC WAY OF DOING THINGS!! If you look at your key there will be a slot running down either the right side or the left - make sure the new barrel you are using has the same sided key as yours and this is really easy and brilliant - thank you so much for posting it.,
Great video. The ignition barrel broke in my wife´s old Astra . I tried to transfer the tumblers, but found out the the new core only has 8 tumblers, so she has to settle for two keys.
is it possible to order a core with the right amount of tumblers ? If there are 2 tumblers missing why do the missing two stop the key entering as they are missing ?
I also done the same thing broken barrel but the AA took my to the car repare's can not replace it there took £250 and now I have two keys but I went to vauxhall and got a new one the joke's go's on there reprogrem the module and left everything open I had to put everthing back like new. Also it's go to cost me more money to put it right. If you can do a video that will be great. also have a bring xmas and a bright new year and kept makeing more video's, PS thank's.
Well done Man :) :) you have solved a big issue for me + $$$$ thank you so so much :) :) :) by anychance can u upload a video how to insert the barrel in the slot i am having trouble fixing it :) Kind Regards
Thank you very much for sharing this, yes it has helped me - I will be giving it a go - also any help with putting the barrel back in would be appreciated :)
NotAPrune That is very kind of you but I have watched it and attempted to do the same and it still isn't going in, I did manage to click something - the hole still doesn't seem the right shape;)
Simon Lea Have you made sure to rotate the key inside the barrel to allow the little tab on the top to move and slide in along the top? Also, inside the barrel housing the steering lock mechanism needs to be pushed forward, away from the steering wheel with a screw driver.
NotAPrune Thank you - I found the problem - I had turned the ignition to position 0 with a screwdriver for obvious reasons - when I put it back to position 2 it slid straight in!!!
Yes i did try to jiggling the steering wheel as i turned the key but it is not working, the barrel is so badly damaged you can see the inside, is the anything i can try? please assist
