Re-Learning How To Fly Fast

2020 has been a struggle on the track. The precision and speed that I used to fly with have eluded me so far this season. I crash more, I struggle to fly the same lines I used to, and it's time to start trying to tackle the challenge of why. Today we head to the field and try our best to regain our skills on the race track.

thank you so much for making this vlog I loved the inside look at how you train - but more importantly the way you talk about working on your mental game. I am honestly blown away how fast you fly on those throttle caps. I look forward to seeing all the work you’re putting in pay off in your future videos.

Thanks Roo! Honestly this is not a normal way for me to train. But I had to try something different. And I think it worked out amazingly well! I'm super happy with the result and wanted to share that with others. I also wanted to share the story of me struggling. It's easy to just only publicly share the glory, but that's not real. I think it's helpful to show the struggles that all of us go through and what we do to try to work through them. Hopefully some others can relate and maybe it helps them work through their own struggles.

Very nice! I've been using an 80% throttle cap for a while now and that is where I find iam most comfortable with how the quad feels and how I naturally want the quad to respond. The mental game is huge, finding ways to overcom hurdles and set backs plays a big part in further progression I have found! Btw, you are killing it man! 🔥🔥

dude, this video was exactly what i needed! Im doing my GQ tommorow and it will be my first time and maybe my only time on the track. Im aiming for a 32, but im super nervous. I also havent flown in a while to make matters worse. After watching this, i know that my goal is to just keep it slow and steady and just let myself get faster without pushing it. Thank you! Awesome video

That triple gate execution :D´´´´ BUT! dont be so afraid of the flags! you are gapping those like 2meters (4 legs of freedom units)! Keep up the good work. I really like what you do and how you keep on testing and getting faster!
@JohnEFly
@JohnEFly 3 года назад
Hey man, thanks for the pointer. You made me go back through and watch the DVR again. Sometimes the flags are good, but you're right they are probably the area that could most consistently use improvement. I look forward to hitting the field again and focusing on keeping the flags tighter with my lines. In particular the first and last flag. Thanks my man!

On the mental side, all those things are real - my pace varies 20% depending on how I'm feeling (and a two month old makes that inconsistent), just consider that part of the prep for any event. On the throttle cap side - I think this shows that you have plenty of overhead to lean on the vbat_sag_compensation, if consistency on lap 3/4 is becoming a problem, but honestly anything above 70% you're at full commitment on the sticks and it's working.

Yeah! Very nice flying man, like the way you get those lines with the throttle cap and keep pushing it harder when you get them, you did put a cap on the radio or motor output limit in bf?

That sounds super annoying. I don't see any way that could be something I caused, but I'll just turn off all mid-roll ads. I never used to turn them on, but RU-vid defaults them all to on now and I never touch those defaults... Sorry man! Thanks for the support

Very cool. Out of interest were you running Vbat Sag compensation too?
@JohnEFly
@JohnEFly 3 года назад
no vbat sag compensation. I used to use it, but honestly it felt like it took away too much of the punch of the battery. I could probably have gone with a higher throttle cap and turned the sag compensation back on for similar effect though...

Is it harder for you to pull out of the split s and the corkscrews with a throttle cap?
@JohnEFly
@JohnEFly 3 года назад
Hmm... They are definitely less forgiving with lower throttle caps. So in that way it's harder. But if you take them right they aren't hard. So I feel like it's good practice for flying with more power if you can take the moves in the same way.
@tehllama42
@tehllama42 3 года назад
Jay is spot on - the margin for error gets tiny, and timing it (relative location) becomes everything - the reason this training approach works is that going that fast without extra throttle to bail out, you have to be almost frame-perfect to carry momentum through (but partial abort is possible - just slow). From there, just speeding up the approach, minimum cornering speed, and powering out just lets the sequence happen faster.

@tehllama42
@tehllama42 3 года назад
@@Ryan-ek3wx Any change is going to cause a LOT of that - subtle discomfort type stuff doesn't come out until you're pushing towards the edge of making mistakes, and that's when that all comes out... or doesn't (and you're inexplicably fast).

Confidence comes from practice or training.
@JohnEFly
@JohnEFly 3 года назад
a lack of confidence can also come from practice when things don't go well. I suppose you could say that having skill brings confidence, and I think that's a no brainer. But also having a lack of confidence can bring down skill. Confidence was certainly not something I used to lack. I'm just trying to share my thought process and efforts to improve with others.

Try to visulize yourself running the course before actually doing it. A technique pro athletes use. Apparently it works. With time and practice . Peace brother.
@JohnEFly
@JohnEFly 3 года назад
Thanks for the tip. That's actually a technique I've used for as long as I've been racing. I close my eyes and visualize every part of the track and where I make each move. I think that's a great tip, and I recommend others do it too. But this year that has not been enough so far...
