This is a sharper scan of the previous raw footage. My father, Donald "Dee Jay" Hallman, shot this footage at the 1947 & 1948 National Air Races in Cleveland, OH when he was 26 years old. Pop used an Argus C-3 35mm and a Revere "60" Magazine Eight Turret Camera. The stash was found in the basement archives of his estate. Dad...I'm proud of your keen eye and will forever admire your passion for the Arts & flight.
This film will be fine tuned, then combined with the 40+ 35mm slides that have been scanned
and preserved.

Thx, Pat. I only wish that my dad had another roll of film that day, for both the movies and the stills.

Fabulous Tom. That brought back a lot of memories. Our family regularly attended local airshows in the 1950s, at bases now long gone. I have memories of a B17 taxying past, of B29s being transported through our village on low loaders and a rare glimpse of a B36 heading North over our house. Such excitement for an aviation-mad kid in rural Somerset, England. Noel

Thx, Noel. Glad this one proves nostalgic for you. I knew dad had these pix and reels, but I didn't fully realize what I was sitting on. Now I have a twinge of regret, that I didn't more fully engage in conversation with him about these trips to Cleveland. I just found out from his nephew, who was along with him and two others, that they slept in their car, and old Nash with fold down seats. Slept in the airport parking lot... And yes, a police officer tapped on their window at one point to ask "what's up, boys..." The drive was over 425 miles from where they started, in rural NE Pennsylvania.

That pilot was flying the fabric off of that Jenny! I had no idea that they were so maneuverable!

That is a USMC F4U-4 from VMF-225, out of Cherry Point, NC. My dad traveled with the squadron to the show. He was the prop mechanic but never mentioned this accident…I’m sure he would’ve loved seeing this video.

These videos are incredible! I’m currently building a Pitts to race in the biplane class at Reno. When you show up in Geneseo, I will happily take you and all your friends for a ride in my J3. Obviously one at a time. I’m looking forward to meeting you

What a breathtaking collection of footage, planes you just never see. I was especially struck by the P-38. I had no idea they had gotten into civilian hands for air racing. Just imagine the stir it would cause if one showed up at Reno today. Then there is a P-84(?), B-35, some amazing open monoplane pusher, a lovely Electra... the list goes on and on. Very well filmed given the awful viewfinders and touchy exposure of that era.

Thx, Bill. I have both cams that my dad used, and ur right, having a viewfinder on the upper side, along with the option of the zoom lens, led to a few unfortunate framing issues, but regardless, I'm thrilled that he made the effort. He was juggling the film cam with the Argus brick for the stills, so he had his hands full, but I can just imagine his smile thru it all.

What is that at 4:32? Sure looks a lot like a Breezy! I thought that was a ‘60’s machine.
