I install a performance ebay no branf 45mm pod or cone filter and ebay no brand 12mm Crank Case Breather on Doug my Royal Enfield Classic 500 and then test ride it.
I would not recommend this modification unless you have a piggy back ECU such as a Race Dynamics Powertronic or Power Commander IV as it will run to lean! Which means popping, stumbling and it running hot, causing damage!
P.S Yes I know the bike is dirty! 😉

Based on this vid, I bought a pod filter for my RE500 it's beautifully chromed...planned on installing it....then saw a vid on the damage that happens to your pistons with inadequate air filtering... Pod filters or even just replacing the OE filter with a high flow K and N filter. Horrible. Piston scoring, Ring wear, Oil burning. It was pretty awful. There were very small HP gains but it doesn't seem worth it. They recommended sticking to the OE system...as lousy as it is. The small gains in power might be worth the risk if you were racing the bike on a track where every tiny advantage is important and the lack of dirt or grit on a competitive surface might mitigate the loss of filtering. Your roads in Tas seem to be just as gritty as mine, here in Oregon.

It running to lean with out a piggy back ECU would also kill it! I've seen the videos and the warnings before and have run pods on 20 something bikes ive had before and never personally had a filtration issue but yeah the warnings are of concern. As the bike is not my commuter and it's a weekender I love the look, the sound and the throttle response I get with it so I'll leave mine on but certainly understand why you wouldn't Steve!
@thorbjornhansson4520

Installing the KN filter into the filter compartment is kind of tricky: the KN does not stay centralised in place when you put on the plastic cover, so you have to somehow find a way to keep it in correct alignment while you put on the cover.

If the seat of your pants is tellin ya its runnin better I'm not gonna argue. If you're not goin off road the oiled filter should be ok Triumph told me that K+N's and the like weren't good for off road they recommended foam. The only concern I would have is you no longer have a negative pressure crankcase vent it's just vented to atmosphere if you oils not gettin dirty sooner then that's not a concern either. Hope your weather gets a little better Dug doesn't seem to care much about it.
@iRidetas
@iRidetas 5 лет назад
Thanks mate! Yeah good point, I've taken it off road once to prove it can will be on road from here! It's a good point I have 45mm foam if need be. It seems to be stronger again but I'll watch that oil as you said. Yeah it's not to Northern USA or Japan etc. With snow but it's harsh and wet so creates some issues.

As a fairly active member of an offroad oriented bunch, I can tell you that just about everyone i know has oil-based dna/k&n type filters on their bikes. Only thing is that you have to maintain them every once in a while...

G'day again. Have you tried repositioning your throttle sensor? The Torx screw at the bottom of the sensor loosens and lets you slide the sensor back and forth, telling the ECU to deliver more or less air/fuel mixture. There is a couple of good videos on RU-vid showing how to do it, using a mulit-meter and giving 'normal parameters.... I haven't done mine yet but will do in the next couple of days. Should help fix any residual 'popping' and help the PowerTronic get some more juice to the engine.
@iRidetas
@iRidetas 3 года назад
The powertronic calibrates to the throttle position itself so i cant see changing the tps physically making any difference so never tried. I reduced poping by adding more fuel on racetune at throttle position 0%.
@stevemiller7433

Dug just keeps getting better. Sounds great. The add on fuel commander, does it re calibrate the EFI to run richer? Do you have a vid of the Power commander install? Does it adjust to accommodate the shortened intake and the less restrictive exhaust?

Sorry big day at work, yes it samples the lamda sensor, spark, timing fuel etc. And you alter the maps for the levels of modification so map 1 for low to medium level mods map 2 for more modified Enfield and then base maps for dyno tuning or street tuning etc. I think it's a great unit!

Hi I know its a while since you placed this video but as I recently bought a classic 500 2020 I am interested in updates for better performance . I already disconnected the breatherhose from the airfilter as made an sort of filter outside the box .the second thing is your replacement of the airfilter by a shorty . In your video I don't see an inlet air temperature sensor in the airbox which is vitel for the ECU to react on inlet air fluctuations (one of the reasons to get the breatherhose out of the airbox apart from being oily) my question is does your model doesn't have an IAT sensor.? Regards Chris

@iRidetas 4 года назад
Enjoy the mods tje bike is a dream after them, please fell free to ask any questions 😀 Yes mate, some pods operate "dry" some work better with an oil sprayed onto it which helps filter the particulates as they stick to the oil. Its basically what foam air filters like a unifilter on dirt bikes use.

iRidetas thanks for this. Any brands or products I should look for (or avoid)? I have my finger hovering over the “buy it now” button for the power commander... Electrics are Voodoo to me. When you removed your tank, it sounded like you still had fuel in there (or am I wrong)? Thanks for the time and advice.
@iRidetas
@iRidetas 4 года назад
The piggy back ecu are great. I went powertronic, videos on that in the playlist if intetested, but hitchcocks etc. Use powercommander. The maps make a big difference and the more you mod the more you need a different map. Yup i take the tank off all the time on my bikes with fuel in them. Just make sure the petcock is off! 👍I have struggled with a couple of sellers but uk companies such as hitcocks etc. Are excellent.

@NewYorkCityonTwoWheels
@NewYorkCityonTwoWheels 4 года назад
Y'know, I'm surprised that no one manufacturers an intake air filter with a connection where you can route the hose from the crank-case. That would seem to duplicate the OEM crank-case vent routing and prevent substances from entering the crank-case through the vent filter. My only real concern about this upgrade is (as a few comments have made) liquids and small particles entering the crank-case through the crank-case filter (though of course the filter traps the big stuff). How has your oil been looking since this upgrade?
@iRidetas
@iRidetas 4 года назад
Absolutely fine mate! 👍I live in an area that gets 2 metres of rain a year, i am not concerned. I do agree that more aftermarket suppliers should look at the intake as it responds well to modification! Cheers

As I have enquired about what you did with the existing breather pipe, so too Askay More below asked the same question. I have reviewed the video and cannot find what you did in the conversion. Sorry for the repeated question but in a "How To" video a more detailed explanation would-be appreciated. Again your efforts are recognised and appreciated..
