Jack Reacher himself, Alan Ritchson (Reacher, Blue Mountain State) joins me this week to bravely discuss his battle with bipolarism and the struggle in finding his true identity in Hollywood.
Alan and I talk about being a better fit for Jack Reacher compared to past actors, hitting rock-bottom mentally, and the intense filming schedule of Amazon Prime Video’s Reacher.

This is what makes the podcast so great everyone one of the guests really opens up. They tell their truths and their darkest pain but saying that I felt Laura vandervoort didn't quite open up. I don't know about anyone but I felt like she was guarded not quite revealing anything. I felt Michael was prodding her with each step and even then she revealed nothing like who did you not get on with on the set that cause you to walk out, how was feeling etc,

As a psych nurse, I absolutely love and salute Alan for talking so openly about his mental health. These are the conversations that need to be normalized in our society. I've worked in psychiatry for 30+ yrs and unfortunately I still see very little movement of the needle regarding stigma. We have to do better and the value of talking with each other about our mental health and care of it is immeasurable. The fact that Alan is using his voice to amplify this message is very much appreciated. With regard to US healthcare, it's an even larger issue, as we throw billions upon billions into healthcare annually, which would suggest its importance in this country. What's prioritized is actually the money generated from it. The system will remain broken as long as profit continues to be more important than human health in the industry.

THEN II COULDNT STOP AND watched the rest of them ....HE FUC=**ING NAILED IT! Brings to mind downey JR. as Ironman....thats liike, unicorn rare kind of perfect casting.... even in this crazy world we are living in, when the universe puts it together, whether you are invested in it or or not... ...out of no where, miraculously you actually get to witness magic... Mr. Ritchson, thank you for utterly tearing Reacher right out of the pages (and my imagaination) and bringing one of my all time favorite characters to life! I am grateful

A genuine empathic individual. Really like this guy and am so glad he speaks openly about mental health. The stigma is awful and it is so unfair. No one would say such things about a cancer diagnosis or autoummune condition. People don't treat people with mental health issues with same level of decency and respect. Telling a depressed person to "snap out of it," is insulting and cruel. You wouldn't tell person who has a heart attack to just smile and think happy thoughts. Riduculous. This actor is terrific and I'm watching Reacher now. It's excellent.

Couldn't agree more. Not going to lie....been facing a dark time myself, call it a mid-life crisis with alot of negative events that have occurred with such a lack of motivation.....Alan, your story hit me hard...as I lay in my bed...not wanting to get up...knowing I need to get up, work out and not knowing how. Your story literally gave me a blueprint of small steps to get the he'll up! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It has been over a year of HELL and have no idea what my purpose is right now BUT I know I will look back on this year and tell the story of how I overcame really tough times. Faith is also everything...I truely believe things happen for a reason, even though we might not understand it at the time. I am SO glad that you have found your beautiful purpose for yourself for the world. God Bless you! BTW--sharing this video to my husband of 13 years....I am positive he is bi-polar....your story, mind and personality is so much like him it's insane. He is an open book with no filter, but has a heart of gold 💛. Loved Reacher 1 and had no clue of your life and story...can't wait to see Reacher 2 and all your other films. Your an inspiration, Alan. I totally agree. Why settle for 6-7 seasons if he can and will love to do 10 or more as long as the showrunners stay true to the source material and keep everyone happy in the Reacher production team? Alan is 37 compared to Tom Cruise when he did Mission: Impossible at 34 years old in 1996 and he's doing the seventh film at 59 years old, and Lee Child's first Jack Reacher novel came out in 1997. We all best buckle in for more of Alan's portrayal of Reacher for many years to come.

Interviews like this make the ones on talk shows seem so shallow in comparison. Of course we all know Alan Ritchson as an amazing actor, but that is only a small part of his identity. What makes this interview so special is that here is a guy who is on Cloud 9 reveal his inner struggles, his journey to get to where he is today. That is something almost everyone can relate to. So thank you Alan; you're a real one and you've inspired so many others to better versions of themselves.

I didn't remember him from Smallville or Titans(getting senile, lol) and had not been a viewer of BMS, but I will be checking BMS on Amazon Prime. Watching him in Reacher, I thought , at times, there was this sneaky😃, understated sense of humor, coming from such a big man playing such a bad assed character. Maybe producers were not smart enough to find and offer other roles to him after BMS. Maybe it all worked out. Reacher was waiting for him. That's my story and I'm sticking to it, lol.

Same man. I was never huge about having kids but its not something you can really compromise in a relationship. So a few years into our marriage, we had our first son. I love my son and adore him and I don't think I could ever live without him. But there are moments where I day dream and wonder living an alternate reality where I stayed single. Hang in there man. It's perfectly okay to doubt yourself, or think "this isn't where I thought I'd be today". Just remember being a parent doesn't define who you are. It's only a = part of yourself. You don't have to become a perfect person all of a sudden. You're still you. Best of luck!

The way I handle depression, anxiety, and midlife crisisis by being a really good uncle. Having kids makes you feel like you have a purpose in life and it makes dying less scary. Because in the back of your mind you know you’re leaving something behind and you will be missed by family makes it much more satisfying. So when your nephews and your nieces love you to bits and say that you are their hero you know you’re leaving something behind that’s something pure. It makes me feel like a super Saiyan.

It was a great decade long experience, but now that she's in her 20s, she never talks to me. About five years ago, she moved away after finding a female partner online and never even told me. I have suffered from depression and anxiety for more than half my life and coming up to 43 and at times didn't think I would ever make it to this age. Thank you so much for letting me listen in to this when you see others going through something similar reminds us we are not alone and the only ones, there is hope and there will be better days.

Hey Phil. Just wanted to say I hope you’re having better days, and get through whatever comes your way. Do you know why you’re depressed? I was diagnosed with BP about 20 years ago. Once I found out why I was depressed, life got so much better. I’ve been depressed from 12 to my 40s,but I’m doing really well right now with the proper meds. I had to get sober first, but I remembered what “they” did to me. I was violated by multiple people at one time(Gg Roped),and one day it all came rushing back. I was 5, and my trust in a caretaker was broken. I think I shut it out my mind because it was too violent to handle, plus someone I trusted handed me over. I’m so glad everyone that I could remember was dead, but I told my mom and she believed me. That helped a lot,but maybe there’s something you can’t remember. I can’t see myself ever wanting to hurt myself again, but I had a forgiveness process to go through. I’ve been to the highest high, and then down to the lowest low. Over and over, and it wasn’t even my fault. I hope your doing ok,and get better. I’m glad you shared Phil. That helps as well. Good luck buddy. Many blessings and peace ✌️

Wow! Not what I expected at all. I've been a huge Reacher fan for decades. I'm an even bigger Alan fan. What a solid dude. Good for him to be so translucent and incredibly honest.

Wow. Alan & Michael hit this right on the nose. And the 'high energy' fight-or-flight gets to you over time and you can't easily spin down and the adrenal response was evolved to operate for short periods and then come out of it, but trauma and stress can make it very difficult to come out of hat state of fight-or-flight. So you end up burnt out with no clear cause. And then everyone is suggesting you to do A, B or C when you are already exhausted and burnt out. Been there, still fighting it. Glad both Alan & Michael are trying to find a better balance.

A friend once diagnosed me when I was a few years out of school, with a good job, moving up in the world, etc. He said: You've worked hard to get through school, to succeed, to get the good job, to be moving up from the hard work... and you think 'When I get to X, I'll be happy' but the problem is that when you get to X, you get a short good feeling, then its flat again and you have to set a new X and when you get there, it will be even less lasting - if you don't enjoy the journey, you will not get to happiness by hoping from milestone to milestone. It took me a few more years to see it. Trauma pushed me to the point of some degree of breaking down. And it wasn't obvious what the cause was. I took one summer and my folks helped me. I didn't do much. I did what I could and wanted to do each day. I puttered, but that got some things done - no goals, just go while I felt like it. Then stopping. It got me into a more balanced place. And I got some help to recognize the trauma and how negative I'd been about myself. For what it is worth, success is nice, but its not the entirety of your life. The victory that ends up as a phantasm... that's what we chase to often. Sometimes you need to do that for a time before you look at new aspects of life and maybe find your purpose and what is fulfilling for you.

Alan was PHENOMENAL in BMS and I am so glad he got such a good role. I read the Lee Child book when I was around 13 on recommendation from my dad and I'm now 25 and I am so glad they did a series that actually does the book justice. Alan pulled it of great and the writing was also superb, I binged it in one sitting. Can't wait for a second season

Listened this morning and just want to say thanks to Alan for being so open and honest (and Michael for being a great host to facilitate the conversation). A close family member of mine has bipolar disorder so its interesting to hear how he's researched it and is finding positives in his condition. Reacher is so great - perfect imagining of the books- and I'm so pleased its been announced for a second series.

Alan Ritchson. My god, this was a groundbreaking conversation and dialogue on bipolar disorder and depression and an in-depth look on fame. This is up there with the Zachary Levi and Stephen Amell interviews for me. I can’t wait to see you back on the show and thank you Michael Rosenbaum for continuing to have interesting conversations with interesting human beings! PS: Reacher was an absolute thrill and I’m so happy that Alan and Co. received a season 2 renewal already! Could not have happened for a better person. ❤️

It’s a great show! Alan is perfect for the role. He’s a lot more than that archetypal ‘muscle guy’, there’s a lot of nuance in his performance. Been bingeing on it the last couple of nights. Kristen Kruek is in it too! Nice surprise. It’s ridiculous how time seems to have stood still for her.

When she popped up in the show I was like "Oh wow!". I first saw Alan as Aquaman in Smallville, so I of course knew Kristen as well. I wondered if they were perhaps friends or if it was just an interesting coincidence.

Good grief, the strength of that man. To be so soul searingly honest about something so raw and dark...it genuinely floored me. Bless you, Alan for having the courage to share your heart with us all. I hope that your strength inspires others to face their darkness and see that it is possible to live with it and maybe eventually overcome it.

Reacher season 1 binge watch was awesome. If you get a chance check it out because it's really good and early season 2 renewal as well. Alan Ritchson was just badass in the show and the villains especially with Bruce McGill reminded me of a darker version of Sorrell Burke's Boss Hogg from The Dukes of Hazzard. I just love how Alan portrays Reacher where he is a man of few words and speaks when the time is right where he you get a sense of Sherlock Holmes style performance. You even have a "In the Heat of the Night" style storyline for Reacher.
