I don’t know any 3D animated movies for kids that would have the balls to literally show a dead child in the arms of its dead mother, in a full shot. This movie was daring with how dark it got but it’s easily one of my favourites

I remember rewatching this later in life (I was 7 when it came out) and I remmeber thinking, "holy shit, most horror movies wouldn't even go that far." I feel this movie is a good bridge for kids into scary movies. It's shows just enough but doesn't good too far or graphic. As was said in the video, the machines are horrifying, but there's nothing necessarily inappropriate about them.

One is such a great character. He acts like a dick but he's being the (overly) protective father figure and leader, he's the first and the oldest. He's filled with fear because he witnessed the entire world burn. From his perspective it makes total sense; "the entire world is dead and its dangerous so we stay together don't venture out. They went to rescue 2 and look what happened, 2 died and they started up something terrible that's trying to kill us all. I'm hard but I keep us alive." And what a badass way and line to go out on, "Sometimes, one must be sacrificed." Once again doing the hard thing to keep others alive.

I'm so glad you guys reacted to this film! 9 is a hidden gem that was, when it came out, a film that parents took their kids to because it was an animation, and completely didn't expect the twisted plot and disturbing premise. Now there's a whole story that's been explored through other youtube channels who examine the background of this film in full. It's a huge inspiration for me and my own stories. So glad you liked it!

My sister, her best friend and I would always watch Coraline every Halloween and on the DVD they had an ad for this movie would always come up. So everytime we watched Coraline we would see 9 and be like "we should watch that" lol. Eventually we did and it was so haunting. I think i was maybe 10 when I first watched it and the "Over the Rainbow" scene still sticks with me to this day, just lingering in the back of my mind. When I heard you guys were going to react to this I got sooooo excited!!!

A deleted scene that didn't make it past the storyboard phase showed that 6's key was actually supposed to unlock the scientist's message towards the end of the movie.

Tim Burton's favourite machine from the movie (as well as mine) is the Seamstress, the cobra machine. It's a subtle reference to the Other Mother from Coraline, as both movies were made by Focus Features and both were released in 2009.

Recently but the actor plays the scientist was related to Oppenheimer which is kind of ironic considering the character he plays a person that creates a weapon of mass destruction.

I loved this film as a kid, its so hauntingly beautiful and complex. Can't stand this idea that dark concepts aren't "for kids" like literally piss off, if kids didn't like a dash of darkness then Horrible Histories wouldn't have been the success they were/are. Kids, at least ones that aren't sheltered and coddled into needing padded foam over all the sharp edges of the world, absolutely LOVE dark concepts and creepy stuff. 9 is clever and well executed, and I remember really thinking about the themes in ways I hadn't been able to with other films.

9 was directed by Shane Acker and the film was based on a short film of the same name he made in university! This film and its fandom got me through high school and it's one of my favourites and so important to me. Made a bunch of friends in the fandom and we had our own stitchpunk characters we created -- mine was called 725 and he was inspired by and based on actor Peter Lorre, who worked in film noir back in the 40s and 50s; 9 is set in an alternate timeline between the first two World Wars so I thought it'd make sense! I miss the fandom a lot -- it's practically dead now with so many of us going on our separate ways and dealing with life. We were like a big family.

this traumatized me so bad as a kid back when I was 9 in 2009 (not kidding) when I watched it together with my dad but it also stuck with me as one of the most unique and special movies I've ever watched. The world building was fantastic, everything was just so well thought out. Little nightmares definitely reminds me of that! Pretty sure they took some inspiration there. Such a fantastic film

This is probably one of my favorite movies growing up. Saw it with my dad on my birthday and it forever stuck with me. Especially the opening and ending monologues. I think this movie is underrated due to it being compared to it's short film counterpart (which I highly recommend checking out too if you can find it). Shane Acker, the movie's director, made it in college and it held more onto the concept of mystery and the unknown. Nothing was spoken of figurtively and literally. It used to be on youtube and was making rounds before the movie came out, so people tended to compare the two. And I recall one theory is that each stitchpunk's, the creatures the scientist made, number indicates how close the are to a perfect soul. So 1 was the most flawed and 9 was almost perfect.

I was 19 when this came out and was so excited to watch it in theatres and it did not disappoint at all, still one of my favorite animated movies, it’s so dark with great voice acting and the animation, the story EVERYTHING is great!

I think this might be interesting for you, guys. But there is another very different version of this film. And it exists only in Russia. Our local adaptation is so different from the original, that you can call it another movie. One of the producers of it was Timur Bekmambetov (Russian movie director), so he gave this movie to one writer (don't remember his name) for Russian adaptation. But instead of translating it, as usual, he totally rewrote it and created his own version, without changing any animation. Russian version is full of words, monologues (9's thoughts and reflections), descriptions and explanations of the world, our mission here, God and all that. There are a lot of hints and allusions to the Bible. And that changes everything: the characters' tempers, their goals behind their actions, the meaning of the whole movie. I don't know why they did it. As a translator, I'm against such things. I was thought to save as much from the original as I can, during interpretation. But on the other hand, it's such an interesting experiment. It makes this film even more unique and it shows the power of the words. Thanks for your videos! I really like your reactions!

I don't think I've seen one thing of his and disliked it to the degree where I had to take out my quizzing glass and reassess the work *coughs* M. Knight 😁. Yay you guys actually checked it out XDD. I love this movie for the vibe and concept more than anything else. It's just really unique, and you're right it is pretty similar to little nightmares XDD. The sense of scaling really makes everything super scary and it makes you sympathize with One's point of view to a certain extent right from the get-go. Like, who *wouldn't* fear a world like this? I certainly wanted to just hide within the first few minutes of watching it XDD. It's raw and realistic, but it doesn't abandon hope. It's really well done.

The thing about that little device with the runes, it transfers souls into the dolls, giving them life. The only reason i bought this movie was because of a music video that hinted at the song being in the movie, it wasn't but still a good movie.

The scientist didn't split his soul into 9 pieces, but 10. He split his soul for the first time in the round robot scene, as seen in the tape from the little box near the end of the movie. And as such he indirectly caused the destruction of the world. He gave his machine a soul because otherwise it was just a machine. The chancellor wanted it to build war machines. The chancellor wanted more machines, but since the machine had a soul, the machine snapped and turned the machines instead against humanity, causing the war, ending humanity. If he didn't gave the machine a soul, none of it would have happened, even though his intentions were good in the first place.

I remember when this movie came out. I was in my mid 20s and though it looked interesting. I picked it up on DVD when it was released. When I finally watched it boy was it a surprised at it. I didn't think it was going to have such a dark theme to it. Was still a good watch. It kinda reminds me of a friendlier version of the 1999 movie Virus (a good SciFi Horror).

I haven't watched 9 again till two months ago, it was pretty nostalgic for me, I was young, I don't remember when I watched it from the first time. But I have it on DVD (copy of it and still do), I was glad that didn't traumatized me. Cause I didn't understand the concept of dead yet so... yeah. 🙂😅 Even though I watched it at least dozens of times, either in English or in French. When I saw it again online, that's were some scenes really hit me (like alot, on the inside, but not emotionally, since it's rare that I cry while watching something), as I now understand it more. 😐

This movie is actually based off of an original short film by Shane Acker from 2005. It's a shame that Tim Burton slaps his name onto so many projects where a good amount of the credit for the creative genius is due elsewhere.

I definitely remember watching this when i was younger and i just remembered that it was weird and full of nightmare fuel. Wasnt exactly wrong either, especially the snake. I really don't think i would have rewatched this without having this chance to rewatch it alongside other people which also helped me understand it a bit better. Its a decent movie but its the kinda dark that I simply don't like. Its the puppets dying that probably gets me the most. I mean I also really liked the concepts within world war z about how the virus only goes after healthy hosts but the movie overall was just a bit too much death and zombies for me. Zombies are definitely my least favorite besides psychological horror/thrillers unless its something like paranorman or warm bodies where rhe zombies aren't completely bad.

Ah yes The post-apocalypse horror of my childhood It is kind of thing that feels big, mysterious and forbidden when you find it in parent's movie folders while you little. Then when you become an adult you find 9 again and it feels absolutely the same.
