Reacting to CRAZY RUMORS about Mormons 

Someone told my Mom on her mission that their priest told them that if they even looked at a Mormon they would catch on fire. The funniest part for me is that they were looking my Mom in the eye when they said this to her.

Once when the Sisters & I were teaching someone, they said “how do you deal not going to the bathroom?” And we were like “what?” And he’s like “I heard you can’t go to the bathroom because your body is a temple?” 😂😂😂

I don't live in an area where LDS is common, in fact I've never met anyone Mormon and it's never been mentioned in school or whilst growing up, but am a Christian and have been binge watching your videos, really interesting!

My seminary teacher taught me that folding our arms when praying is just to show respect and not being busy with our hands, and bowing our head is to show humility and unworthiness before the lord, and closing our eyes is just to make sure we are not distracted and are focusing on praying

I think I may know where the carrot one came from...a man in one of my wards said when he served his mission in Japan the word for "personage" was similar to the word "carrot". Some new missionaries had a hard time when reciting the first vision and said it as,"two carrots descended out of heaven and one carrot pointed to the other..." But I wonder how a lot of English speaking peoples heard this.

When I told someone I knew that I was Mormon, they said, “oh, you don’t eat pork or don’t celebrate Christmas!”.......um what?? I love bacon and Christmas!

Until this video, I believed the apparent myth about not going to heaven without having children, and that the more children you have, the better your chances in the afterlife. Thanks for debunking this stuff in a lighthearted way!

Hiya! I was baptised on 1st September this year, I just had my first visit to the temple on general conference weekend, it was such a good weekend! I'm really glad I found this church but I'm struggling with the anxiety of being called to do my first talk.. any tips? Love the channel, it's helped answer a lot of questions I was too shy to ask the missionaries!

I served my mission in France, and we heard a lot that they thought Mormons where like the Amish with no electricity, modern technology etc.

I joined the Church in November 2017 and I love it so much.

6:08 one time I slipped while in the shower and hit my head, half concussed, I prayed that I wouldn’t die. So... yes...

One I heard when I first joined the church is that we dance naked in front of the prophet in the temple. Also some have said people ask them if they can feel their horns. Oh, and our prehensile tails, too.

I’m LDS, an someone heard a conversation I was having with another member, and asked us why our Faith in God only lasted until we were 12. Clearly, she thought we were literally speaking, instead of talking about the progress on our reward.

This isn’t quite a misconception, but apparently names are hard to say. In history class we learned about the Mormon Trail, and we were asked who settled Utah. One girl raised her hand and said “Birg-hand Young.” I also have an Angel Moroni necklace, and my friend asked who it was, so I said who. She goes “What the heck kind of name is ‘Mor-meen-ee?!’”

I've literally had people ask to feel my head to see if I had horns after finding out I'm a Mormon. A very old, insane rumor; that we become...er...intimate...with each other on altars in the temple. The Marriott rumor though, there may be some truth to that. Marriott himself, the founder of the hotel chain was a Mormon. I was told years ago by several other members that couples who were getting married in the temple could stay one night in a Marriott hotel for free. Most people who lived in the Midwest and East used to have to travel very far in those days to get to a temple. I also heard that the Marriott hotel has both the Book of Mormon and the Holy Bible in each room. I hope that one is true!

I have gotten that our garments give us magic powers. I have always gotten we baptized dead bodies. The rumors crack me up cause they make us sound cooler than we are

When I was on my mission, we had a lady that kept telling us that our church had a Mormon mafia and we would whack anyone who left the church. LOL! I tried to explain that was absurd and not true but she wouldn't hear it. My companion made a T-shirt to work out in that he wrote on it saying: "Official Baptizer for the Mormon Mafia." Ha ha ha! I cry.

The temple recommend and Marriott hotel “myth” is partially true. About 20 years ago, my family would stay over a the Marriott by the DC temple and we would get a discount (not free) for staying. So yes, that was a thing!

I asked my parents about praying: we fold our arms and close are our eyes to keep us calm and stay focused on the prayer and to not touch siblings or mess around with things around us, to stay reverent

when my brother was on his mission (he was in a poor place in argentina and they are going through kinda like our great depression) one missionary in his area got shoot there was blood every where on his suit but nothing was on the garments it was not ripped up any where it was just white like it’s supposed to be but under that you could see the gun shot wound so maybe people who think garments are bullet proff might heard stories like this one and miss understood

I took carrots out of the fridge when you talked about them, but I didn't pray to them.

My understanding about the mafia bit is that, supposedly, about 20-40 years ago in Moscow missionaries converted the son of a man who, at the time, was the kingpin of a major gang, so he declared that all LDS missionaries in Moscow would be under his agents' protection.

Oh man I was in a temple prep class a few weeks ago and the teacher was like "yeah one time this guy fell off a motorbike and only got scraped up where his garments weren't" and I literally had to stop the class and call Faith Promoting Rumour on it cos 🤨

Never heard of these, but owning half the world's buffalo population was believable. Definitely. And when I first heard of baptisms for the dead, I thought it meant baptizing the deceased before they're buried

Two days ago I met with missionaries and they asked me to pray with them and I agreed ( never done that before). And the one folded his arms and I did, too. The other folded his fingers. Was a very ... interesting experience.

It strikes me to think that there are some serious ethical concerns, especially the topic of "designer babies." I would like to know how this is viewed by other people of the church.

50 years in Mormonism + a 2yr mission, I NEVER heard the "little green men" rumor. I think that was a Mormon making up a cute story with the intent of muddying the water of REAL weird Mormon ideas....like the "Salamander" story.

My grandmother used to believe that Mormons grew little devil horns after baptism.. so when we were all baptized, she would try to feel under our hair for the horns.. needless to say she never found one.

My great-great grandmother, when she was preparing to leave Switzerland for America to join the Church, was told that if she joined the Mormons, they would chop all of her long, thick, and curly hair. She joined the Church and kept her hair.

I think the folded arms thing is an appeal to early Christianity. Up until about 1100AD all Christians prayed with crossed arms. Somewhat unrelated, but it's why pretzels are twisted. Records from about 610AD show that monks in Bavaria used to give them to children as a reward for saying their daily prayers, and that the twisted ends were said to resemble the crossed arms of a praying child.

My friends always come at me with at lot more serious rumors like blood atonement, adam-god theory, and stuff like that. These are really chill by comparison.

8:30 I don't fold my arms, I actually keep my arms in close to me, but I cross my wrists in front of me so that my hands can't reach my arms in any way, because I have anxiety, and if I'm not careful I will compulsively scratch at my skin. In the Japanese language there are two words... Ninjin and Ningen. One means two people the other two carrots. Heard that some missionaries have mixed those words up, and in telling the Joseph Smith story of the First Vision - said that two carrots descended from heaven. I never mixed those words up as a missionary in Japan - but can see where that false myth could have started.

I do know a friend who on their mission befriended two local gangs, and always had a pair of bodyguards while tracting through their turf. Crossing the border between their territories was always tense though.

Um, hay when I first joined the church back in 1992 the discount for motel rooms was offered here in the east for temple trips. For both individuals and groups because the temple was to far away depending on which area you are in . If you lived in central Ohio at that time most members went to the D.C. temple for their endowments but after that they could choose any temple for other ordinances and still it was far until they built the Columbus temple.

I've heard an alternative rendition of the "praying to carrots" rumor, but it was actually metaphorical, rather than literal. They said that "Mormons worship carrots", and the 'carrots' concept comes from a quote about religion in general being designed around, "dangling carrots in front, while threatening the whip from behind". The idea was that carrots are rewards and the whip was punishments, and that Mormons worship the idea of gaining rewards. It was in a way a slam on Mormons as being greedy and only doing things out of the potential for reward, rather than out of a love for God. the "praying to carrots" rumor may have been a corrupted or telephone game result of that kind of original sentiment. obviously it is not true, but because of he fact that the Mormon church views the degrees of glory as stages of inheritance and reward from God granted according to the deeds done in the flesh (Romans 2:6, 2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 Corinthians 4:5, 1 Peter 1:17, Revelation 20:12, Psalms 62:12, Proverbs 24:12, Colossians 3:25, Proverbs 11:31, 1 Corinthians 3:8, etc.), I can see how some may have thought that. especially since LDS scripture expounds on those of the Bible on this topic, even proclaiming that all blessings are gained through obedience (D&C 130:20-21), therefore, any obedience offered is supposedly done to gain the blessing which that law is associated with. Thus, they assume, the obedience was for the reward and not out of love.

I had a friend in high school who told me that he'd heard that Mormon women had to be married by the time they were 21. Nope...

None of these are of any consequence. I can't help but feel like some very real issues are being avoided.

Okay, for the garments are bulletproof one, they aren't that far off. I have met this one guy and he was the Sunday school teacher in my cousin's ward. He told us a story about a time when he was cutting down trees with a chainsaw. I don't know all the technicalities of it but the chainsaw came back and hit him in the leg. He was expecting his leg to be cut off at the worst. He looked down and it had cut open his jeans and his garments but there wasn't a scratch on his leg. Not one. Some may say that maybe it didn't fire back hard enough but think in your head. Chainsaw cutting through jeans and garments and not even touching the skin. Even when you have control over the chainsaw it's hard to do that.

Ok but my ward building is on the edge of town and surrounded by some fields and sometimes we'd show up on Wednesday night and and there were some pretty big snakes a couple times 😬😬

As a missionary in England (1968) we were told by some non-members that their priest told them that the reason we were there was to steal women and take them from England to the United States for our wives through an undersea tunnel. My jaw still drops in disbelief that someone would believe that ! I also had a non-member friend ask if it's true that we dig up bodies in graveyards to baptize them.

So the church may not be paying the mafia to protect missionaries, but I had a companion from Baltimore, Maryland on my mission and some gangs would protect "the Jesus boys" on their turf because their moms taught them about Jesus when they were kids.

When my son was working at a Boy Scout camp, two boys got really excited to find out he was Mormon. They had done a paper about Mormons in school, so they wanted to ask him some questions. What was the first thing they asked about? Kolob!

The live snake thing probably comes from Pentecostal churches who some actually do feature live snakes in worship.

In the Japanese language there are two words... Ninjin and Ningen. One means carrots, the other human. Some missionaries have made that mistake in telling the Sacred Grove event - and accidentally say that in answer to Joseph Smith's prayer 2 carrots descended from heaven. Can you guess which one is which? Ninjin = carrot and Ningen (g as in good) = humans (or beings). So I can understand why that misunderstanding might be. Personally I never had this particular problem - but there were two words that I mixed up, so never ever asked a woman a certain question. Shufu = housewife, and Shofu (long o) = prostitute. So never asked a woman if she was a housewife, for fear that I would use the wrong word - and did not want that to happen.

Hmmm here’s what my family have told me: -if you don’t pay your tithing then the church tax collector comes around and penalizes you for not doing so -My mom also told me about the more kids = higher heaven -the preist who’s marrying two people also consummates the marriage with the bride

Funny story…my wife shot me in the shoulder with a 9mm during Target practice. It ripped my shirt but the garment stopped it. It was a ricochet but it was going fast enough to leave a bruise! True story!

Why is everyone getting Joseph Smith's first name wrong?

Speaking on the garments are Bulletproof. Well I know some members who believe well not that they are Bulletproof but do have some magical protection to danger. Like one guy said that he was using a chainsaw and it sliped and hit him in the leg but he didn't get cut amd even his garments werent cut but just a tear in his jeans and that his garments gave him protection. Another one was my dad who had a gas camping light explod on his chest and it burned him but the areas where his garments where touching his skin were not burnt because his garment provided protection. So you say no Mormons belive garments are Bulletproof but I do know some that think they are in a way
