REACTING TO EUROVISION 2024 FINAL RESULTS

I’m really sorry about the situation. I hope the truth will come out and we will soon know what happened.

I can tell you what happened on Thursday as I saw it myself and had to give a statement about it. When the artists come off-stage after their show, there is more recording which happens with the marketing team for the social media reels, and after Joost's performance he came backstage and was in a stroppy mood. He was supposed to do a quick 5 minute reel recording before getting ready to head to the press centre, but instead he snapped and assaulted one of the marketing girls (she is very young, only in her late teens) by swinging at her arm. That caused her to lose grip of her phone and it went flying through the air and the screen smashed when it hit the ground. Straight after that, Joost then lunged forward at her and raised his fist as if he was about to punch her, and she screamed and cowered then covered her face with her hands. There were 2 people from Joost's delegation with him who quickly got in between him and the girl, and they hurried him away. One of the crew then went and picked up the phone from the ground, and 4 others went to the girl to calm her because she was crying, shaking and hyperventilating. The girl then left work and went home about 20 minutes after the incident. The next morning (Friday) she didn't turn up to work, and another crew member went and spoke to HR to tell them what had happened the night before because people were concerned. SVT got really p*ssed after learning about the situation and got the EBU involved, and demanded that Joost is removed from the venue. So EBU started their own investigation, and then Joost was told he had to leave the venue and go back to the hotel and was not allowed to return. Early on Friday afternoon, EBU made the decision to disqualify Netherlands from the competition, and the tech team started changing the screen graphics to remove reference to Netherlands and adjust everything. The announcement was planned to be made before the jury show started, but the Dutch broadcaster then started protesting EBU decision and wanted to talk about alternative options. Jury show was soon to start so EBU decided to let the rehearsal footage be used in the jury show, but that Joost was not to be anywhere near the venue. Dutch broadcaster wanted to keep Netherlands in the competition using the rehearsal footage in the final, but the EBU didn't agree with it because Joost would have had to be in the green room inside the venue and production crew didn't want Joost back inside it. So announcement was postponed until the end of the jury show and was supposed to be made after the arena had been cleared, and the Vote App was to be given a short delay so that nobody would cast votes for Netherlands who would be disqualified. But then the NPO got involved on behalf of the Dutch broadcaster, and they wanted an emergency meeting with the EBU. So that got delayed even more which is why the announcement didn't happen that night either. NPO tried to get Netherlands to stay in the competition, but by this time the police had turned up at the arena because they were receiving calls asking for information about an altercation which happened, so then the police got involved with taking statements and EBU decided to wait until police signalled what they were intending to do. When police signalled that they were going to refer the case to public prosecutor, that's when EBU ended talk with NPO and made the announcement that Netherlands was disqualified. SVT and EBU not allowed to comment on the situation just now because it's a live criminal matter with the police, and they're not allowed to share any media about it either, they have to wait until the criminal proceeding has finished which is going to take a while. Dutch broadcaster has been trying to downplay it as if it wasn't serious, but it's a lie because the girl still hasn't been back to work and is taking some time off. Meanwhile, the Eurovision fandom has been frothing at the mouth thinking this was something to do with the Israel delegation, but it's not. Then there's also others in the fandom who are saying that Joost is completely innocent and that it was the fault of the girl for supposedly making comments about his dead parents, but that's not true either.

@@AnarUto50 - I worked the event this year and saw it happen, it was about 10 metres in once you came in the rear-right arena stage connecting door to the backstage. You would typically see the marketing team getting their footage with the contestants as they were moving from the stage to their delegation cubicle (which is quite a walk), after which they'd get refreshed and ready to go onto the press conference. A lot of extra detail was included in the backstage crew this year to keep eyes and ears open to report back to the EBU, because there was concern for security among particular delegations; and to some extent those concerns were right as they spent their entire time antagonising one another and acting childish and immature. After the incident with Joost, on the Friday morning all the delegations got rounded up and dressed down on their behaviour, and that's why there was a sombre mood that afternoon and nobody was in high spirits. I've worked at Eurovision many times over the last 20 years, and the cast this year are among some of the most unprofessional I've ever seen. Absolutely zero respect for production crew; zero respect for one another; and zero respect to the competition itself.

@@AnarUto50 - Also, it seems now that Joost has actually confessed to it all (conveniently after he has returned to the Netherlands, however). Swedish prosecutors are pressing ahead with charges against him, and his case is set for June.
