The fashion system has always moved quickly, but in the age of social media where trends come and go in a matter of weeks or sometimes days, TikTok has become a place where trends are made, and more and more the fashion industry is tuning in to them! So I thought it would be fun to react to some of the videos that made an impact on me and that I wanted to share!

The way I KNEW the fashion industry was going to drop plus sized models is so infuriating! Everyone was like “the industry is finally being inclusive” no babes they were just hoping in the “body positivity” movement like a trend & not actually adopting it. It makes me mad sad 💔

I kinda hate the idea of buying clothes as investments- like they're clothes, buy things you love enough to wear and wear again Also why would you be buying a mesh bodysuit and then worry about the resale market? idk, but if someone's worn a bodysuit I do not want to buy that second hand, there's just something so crotch centric about bodysuits that second hand gives me the ick.

As a lifelong big girl, honestly the Y2K fashion coming back at the same time as fat-shaming coming back feels right. Being an overweight teenager in the early 2000s has actually scared me for life as far as self-worth goes. I'm so glad I'm in my 30s now and don't feel the need to give up my tailored 2010s clothes just because Y2K is back. Edited to add: Here's the thing about fur and leather. Animals are being killed for food whether we like it or not. It's pretty wasteful to NOT use all parts of the animal just because PETA is being PETA. Now, fur farms are obviously not cool, but the wearing of leather and fur is more complicated than PETA wants us to think.

Finally, someone who gets it. I buy leather, usually secondhand. It's vastly superior to 'vegan' leather in quality, longevity and versatility. I've had a floor length suede jacket from the 70's in mint condition considering its age and a beautiful vegan purse from 2 years ago. The purse has since broken down and peeled. My 70's jacket is still very much still beautiful and in vogue due to its boho vibe. I always say that people will never stop eating meat so why waste the skin when you can use it all. People have been using skins forever as coverings and warmth.

Way back when New York was unsafe but exciting (the 70s, for you youngsters), I'd take a couple of big trash bags, heavy duty, and maybe $30 in cash, and hit all the secondhand stores in the Village. I'd spend hours rooting through racks, shelves, and most often, piles, and come away with wool trousers, wool jackets, cashmere, suede, silk, vintage dresses from before and after WWII. I found the most gorgeous pair of black and white Saks shoes, a take on the classic saddle shoe but narrow, leather so soft you could wrap a baby in it,, and heels made of stacked maple. I worshipped those shoes! I had a collection of those dresses from the early 60s that were fitted on top, but the skirts were full, often with a narrow belt. They were often worn with a crinoline in the 60s, but not by me.Betty Draper wore them on Mad Men. I had at least a dozen long silk nighties in pale silk eating cut on the boat kind of nighties worn to be removed by someone else before bed, obviously! It's interesting to hear her experience with fur in NY, as I wore my vintage fur coats til they fell apart sometime in the late 80s on both Coasts, even in Berkeley. The trick was to wear them with their holes and lost stitching, because it was obvious then that they weren't new. The coolest thing to wear them with was jeans and maybe a silk shirt. And a hat. $30 would fill two garbage bags with clothes of the best kinds. I miss those days!!

About the fur issue, as someone who became vegetarian for environmental reasons rather than animal rights, real fur is the better option in the end. It lasts longer, is warmer (so much more functional) and is biodegradable. My take is that leather, fur, wool, silk and the like will always be the lesser of two evils when the alternative is the ever deteriorating but never degrading plastics. You can’t fight for animal rights if they no longer exist.
@CrystalLovesChrist
@CrystalLovesChrist 6 месяцев назад
That’s a good take and also how I always felt on the matter. I also think the focus on the animal rights part should be on maybe using the fur of animals that would already be dispatched for other purposes, or like better raising and breeding practices for the animals. So at least they aren’t suffering terribly if that makes sense. I’m not an expert at all so idk but that’s just what I was thinking

I totally understand how you feel. My mother gave me a hand-me-down silk jacket with a beautiful fur collar, but I have yet to wear it bc of my mixed feelings of growing up with the antifur campaign of the 2000s (propaganda is amazing). My take is that the animal is already gone and if you don’t feel comfortable wearing it, that’s fine. Just don’t chuck it, give it to someone who will appreciate and bring new life into it
@rebeccacaroe7111
@rebeccacaroe7111 6 месяцев назад
Needs are situational and putting out definitive statements for circumstances that will always be case-by-case will never help one’s argument. While most people may not need fur, there will always be instances where that is not true. Take the nomads of the tundra who herd reindeer through a harsh, frozen climate. Are you going to tell them they don’t need fur and pelts that they’ve harvested themselves? Most arguments I see hurdled at fur seem to apply to all aspects of the modern-day fashion pipeline (ie pollution / human and animal rights violations) and only choosing one garment to scapegoat is asinine. I think that wearing animal-based products that already exist should not be a problem. Hell, even buying new is fine if it’s utilized till it can no longer be worn. In the end, it’s the amount of clothing we buy and produce that harms the environment, not one single type of clothing. @@convenienceatth3pub

The reason that men’s suits had more fabric and we’re baggy in the early 50s and before is because they didn’t want to wear out the knees and they knew that men fluctuated in weight so you could take it in or let it out as you needed it the suits were built to last and the plates were there so your shoes would still be covered while you were sitting down for the most part. My dad is a close horse he has some beautiful suits he has some beautiful clothing that his dad owned. From him I learned a lot about clothing how to take care of it different areas of fashion and what looks good on my body types A lot of vintage fur from the 1940s and previous were more humanely caught like they use the entire animal not just the fair I have no problem with vintage fur but I would not purchase anything new unless I knew that the entire animal was used But that’s just me don’t come for me

Extended size ranges for fashion brands is actually a soapbox of mine. There are many reasons to not expand your sizes above, let’s say, US 12 or what would be considered the edge of plus size ranges, but those reasons also come in a wide variety, from valid ones, like the one you described or how many pattern pieces you can fit into a standard width of the bolt, to medium valid, like how many customers out there who’d actually buy a full price Dior dress in a 5x, to not so valid, like not wanting fat people to be seen in your clothes. Quite interesting to think about.

Here's what usually works for me... 1. DRY SWEATERS FLAT, friends! 2. WASH/DRY SOCKS IN A PINNED PILLOW CASE: never lose your socks in the laundry again!! 3. NEVER SCRUB (SMEAR) FABRIC STAINS! Blot stains from the outside, working your way inward TOWARD THE CENTER, don't scrub it around! 4. AVOID COLOR BLEEDING: wash colors with similar colors in COLD WATER unless otherwise directed on the label. 5. LEATHER SCUFF REMOVAL: warm water + baking soda = thick paste to scrub hard. 6. GLITTER: don't rub or smear! Shake off what you can, then blot the rest with sticky tape. 7. GREASE/OIL STAINS: lay the clothing flat, and treat with small amount of clear dish soap (not laundry soap) directly on the stain, let stand for a few hours, then wash. 8. COFFEE: soak the stain in a mixture of warm water (3-6 cups depending on the stain's size), half a tablespoon of liquid dish soap, and a few table spoons of white vinegar. 9. BE A GUM DISASTER MASTER: if gum can't be removed after freezing it, try white vinegar applied directly to the gum to take its gooey stickiness away, then tape should help remove it. 10. PET STAINS ON CARPET: don't scrub or smear! Clean and soak up as much as possible with a towel, then drench with 1/10 white vinegar to COLD WATER ratio (maybe 1 cup total) to fully drench the entire stain. Cover with folded clean (dry) towel. Add something heavy over the area to help the towel completely soak up the remaining stain. Leave for up to 12-24 hours. Stain should transfer to towel to toss in your washing machine. 11. DELICATES: "hand wash" can mean Woolite and a machine's gentle cycle in a delicates bag or a pinned pillow case. What works for you?

I still stan Coach's leather bags. Every Coach I have has been rugged as hell and aged like fine wine.

Social justice is something that is supposed to bring about real change and yet it seems like they’re all just trends, like how is 2000s body shaming and right wing bigotry making major comebacks. Wtf is that about.

I would never buy a new fur, but I don't buy faux either. I would buy vintage fur, thats it.

For anyone wanting to invest money, never invest in clothing or accessories. Buy an index stock. You are guaranteed to make a return. With clothing you most likely won’t make any money. Clothing diminishes I’m value over time while most stocks gain value because the companies they are tied to grow. When influencers talk about buying this or that as an investment piece I shake my head because for it to be an investment they would have to make a profit from it at some point and they most likely won’t.

Consider expensive quality clothing the same as a car. You live your life in it you use it to get around and the second it leaves the lot. It's value decreases incredibly and it only increases depending on it's manufacturer, how popular it is at the time of creation, and how many are left many years later.
