Tik Tok has without a doubt become one of my favorite, and most addicting habits since the Covid-19 quarantine hit! Although, I was lowkey using it before that. But getting to see the fashion community growing on the app, which is promoting conversations about sustainability, luxury brands, and fashion history is really cool. Today’s video focuses on creators that have been up cycling thrifted or second hand garments into items that are either cooler or more wearable, which is really cool to see. Of course, with climate change and other issues like this becoming more and more apparent, fashion has been saying it wants to transition away from wasteful practices. Some of this is definitely just greenwashing, but some brands are really finding their voices through these ethical practices. But there’s a whole other side of people, who aren’t solely designers or make a living off of fashion that are creating and up cycling garments into styles that are unique and super cute. I think it’s important to see that you don’t have to be a luxury brand to incorporate sustainable or upcycled pieces into your wardrobe!

I’m surprised a brand like Gucci doesn’t bring on guest collaborators like designers and artists to make cool alterations of unsold stock to sell. It would give them a cool urban edge and show a lot of ecological responsibility

Shit that would sell like a mf if they just gave GD the ok sign😯 daaaaamn i would love to see it. I mean he already does shit and fekks them up a bit but that's just for his own fun time and style. Like his collab with nike. You can literally scratch of the top later of the shoe and under it's a new layer that's painted from his design that he painted on a pair of shoes. Wear them longer and not throw them out bc they look a little "used". He made the "used" part become art and a new look, for a longer lifespan 👏 If he could get that with the guuch it would be cool. He's already an ambassador for the shit anyway.

My obaachan worked in the fashion department of a major store in Tokyo and was pretty small (even for Asian standards) so she would tailor or recreate most of her clothes from the "Western" styles of the time (1950s). There are places that sell dead stock fabric - which is any bolts of fabric that didn’t get sewn into garments for a company’s order. Some only sell in 10 metre or full bolt lots, but some will sell 1-2 metre cuts. If you can find a company local enough to you that you can go, or shipping is reasonable, it can be a good deal, as well as more sustainable. Some places also sell boxes of off cuts - literally the chunk of fabric around the garment pieces, which can sometimes sizes large enough for at least kids clothes. Definitely for quilting. The boxes are usually sorted by fabric type. So a box of t-shirt knit, or 5-10 lb of cotton bottom weight.

My fashion school receives tonnes of dead stock fabric from factories and brands that is then available for sale to students for dirt cheap. We're only meant to buy fabric for school projects but I guesss recreating the atonement dress for myself counts as draping and sewing practice, right?

A lot of them are doing these because France has a law forbidding fashion luxury houses from burning their unsold stock. (Remember the absurdity from Louis Vuitton?) Hermés bought a small studio specialized in refurbishing and now they sell trinkets and keychains from repurposed leather.

That’s one of the (many) things I appreciate about Luke’s channel. Even though we come here for the fashion content and sassy commentary, he regularly addresses issues that should be discussed like xenophobia, environmental impact of the fashion industry or as you pointed out size inclusivity. It feels like many creators shy away from talking about such topics because if you don’t have an opinion, you can’t offend anyone and you can’t be held accountable for what you say. Which makes me respect him a lot for actually voicing in just a few but very well articulated sentences what he thinks and what’s important to him.
@anna-sleeps
@anna-sleeps 3 года назад
I love it when size inclusivity is brought up! However, I think this particular argument (shopping larger sizes) might be objectionable in the same way as that of thrift shop gentrification (which goes: people who can afford more expensive clothes shouldn’t thrift and should leave it to those who can’t). I think there is such an abundance of second hand clothes in the world, *a lot* more than enough for everyone, and it makes no sense to hold back - most of the clothes would end up in a landfill anyway. And in my thrifting experience (markets and thrift stores in europe), a huge huge percentage of the clothes is in larger sizes. But if anyone has a counter argument, I’d be happy to change my mind

My mom would do this to almost everything she ever bought(she still thinks she can't sow a garment from scratch thought) so I learned early on that the thread won't change color (at least not as much or in the same way) if you bleech or dye it because the thread will usually be synthetic even if the fabric is cotton. Which is also why I'm pretty sceptical to the finished completely white dress, I have a hard time believing that's the same dress, unless she re-did all the seams with a white thread instead. Be very carefull trying to replicate that one, you might destroy the fabric

I love these thrift flips - keep doing them! It's a good counterpoint to the designer critiques (which are great too). Knits are easier b/c no darts etc needed and the pattern is usually super simple. For knits it's best not to use a straight stitch - always zigzag (if you don't own a serger) because a knit is stretchy and the zig zag allows for that where as a straight stitch will just break. Shirring is where threads are pulled (and they can be elastic) to create gathers. In smocking intricate pleating is stitched with designs and it doesn't stretch (just fyi). You're so entertaining - I really enjoy watching! ThXs.

Hi Luke. Thanks for pointing out how important it is the both recycle and upcycle clothing! I'm a vintage lover and thrift reseller. Vintage clothing is so amazing and so fun and interesting to learn about. I love that you're sharing this info with everyone. TY

As a seamstress I can say that it is just better to by something with even a tiny bit more fabric if you plan to cut anything because all it takes is one mistake then oops you need more fabric. My mom always told me it’s always easier to go smaller than to make something bigger. Sometimes I find something I love but it doesn’t fit me but I can still find a use for it anyways, even the fake Chanel jacket I found once. I gave it to my friend because it was her size only after I used it to look at how it was made so I could make one myself.

I started making my own clothes to reduce waste or whatever but then some of it just ended up being waste 😩😂 bc I'm not very good yet. Luckily there's a place in LA that will rework the fabric & scraps

I was doing it in my high school days when I had no money for nice clothes and I wanted to express my personality so I used to "flip" my clothes a lot.

thank you for insisting on the waste aspect of clothing. fashion is the 2nd biggest source of polution and we are all contributing every day. it' s important to show that we can make stuff with no cost for the environment

It's structural engineering😆. I made two pairs of pajama pants by hand because I'm afraid of sewing machines. I would never sell them for other people, but the first pair took 2 weeks. The second pair took two days.

You can only bleach natural fibres, the threads are synthetic and won’t bleach. Or dye.

As someone who is short, I use a big thrifted Blazer as a jacket, it works great except for really windy days because of the open neck but a scarf that matches takes away that problem.

often (depending on the thread material) thread is unaffected by bleach or dye. one time i dyed a red shirt black and the thread stayed red

I’m a huge thrifter, love a good hunt! Just thrifted an over size black blazer in the men’s department. Also a dress shirt dress , both cost me 10.00. Oh and I love thrifty vintage clutches and have picked up some great bags! My boho skirt, always thrift anywhere between 3 to 4 dollars! I so have a seamstress, I can’t even see a hem ! I do bleach my plants pants that are essentials. Kudos to the girls, I’d never ever would wear any if them , even when I was young, never did body con anything .

Don’t really know how I got here since I’m not crazy into fashion, but honestly, this stuff is really cool to see! Also love how we are beginning to look at sustainability in terms of clothing. One thing I will say, however, is if you purchase second-hand clothing to do this, PLEASE don’t buy from Good Will. They have a long history of exploiting disabled people and continue to do so today (sometimes paying them as low as 30-40 cents an hour).

i am so jealous of all the countries that have plenty of thrift stores like USA, Australia. here in germany (especially in smaller cities) it is kinda hard to find good thrift stores that are not expensive (at least from my experience)

In Croatia we only have a few second hand shops. In my city, Rijeka there are only three or four that I'm aware of. And they only sell clothing, which worries me slightly since my stash of old sheets I use for mock-ups is slowly but surely getting smaller.

Honestly I feel really lucky (Aussie here, Ello👋🏻), I live thirty mins away from the town that has my work and school...we legit only have a food store, fish n chip shop and maybe three others food stores, but we have an op shop. In our tiny residential town, we have one. When we go to the larger town, there is like...seven, eight? And you go to any of the neighboring towns, there is atleast one. Love it

Anyone who has never had bleach work out for you... Try OUT brand 'white brite' (use it outside bc it stinks) and it'll discharge color beautifully. Sometimes there is yellow left over depending on the original dyes used... But it's awesome as a base to dye over.
