As computer geek who was geeking out on computers in the 80s, Wargames is my favorite Mathew Broderick movie. I got my driver's license in 1984 when I was 15 in South Carolina. We definitely had to take a test. I failed it 3 times because I can't parallel park. (I still can't). The age that you can get your license depends on the state.
@MrVvulf
@MrVvulf Год назад
I was in school around the same time (graduated in '83). For the Driver's Permit (in my state), you had to have taken Driver's Education, pass a written exam at the Division of Motor Vehicles, and be within 6 months of your 16th birthday. The permit allowed you to drive between 6am to ~8pm(?) if you had a fully licensed driver in the car with you. On or after your 16th birthday you could take the driving portion of the test at the DMV, and if you passed you got your full license, so didn't need anyone else in the car to drive.
@dre3k78
@dre3k78 Год назад
From SC here too. Got my permit as a freshman in HS in 1992 @ 15. Could only drive during daylight hours so i could drive to school. Only had to take the written test for the permit but had to take the driving test @ 16 for the full license.

That brings back memories. I took the test in a huge Chrysler 300. Aced almost the entire test, and missed failing the parallel parking by one point.

I got my license on my 16th birthday in Texas. We had to have drivers education in the classroom before school for a couple of weeks then actual driving with the instructor. My mother was from Alaska and she told me that when she was young the legal driving age was 14.

@fullmoonprepping4024 Год назад
I'm in South Dakota and on the farm you could have a kid 10 years old driving a combine. But 14 is the standard for a permit until you test for your permanent license. I got mine at 15.

I played hooky from high school with a group of buds. We drove to Philadelphia, hung out on South Street and then Center City all day, then drove to the Jersey Shore. When we got back, the truant officer had visited our homes to track us down. We all got three days of in-school suspension and we spent those three days trashing the hallway, lighting shit on fire, breaking windows, and causing all kinds of mayhem. Somehow we never faced consequences.

This is one of the most iconic 80’s movies ever made and one of John Hughes’ most celebrated films. Fun fact: the man and woman who played Ferris’ parents met and fell in love while making this film and eventually got married. There’s a documentary called “Ferris’ Room” which chronicles how the characters bedroom was recreated in painstaking detail and then taken on tour for the films 30th anniversary. 17:15 And that’s not the Superman theme you heard, it’s the theme from Star Wars.

When it comes to getting your driver's license, in the United States, it depends on which state you live in. I did get my license at 15 because we were from the south and we lived in a very rural area. But the national average is 16. And yes, you do have to take a test. There are driving schools you can go to to prepare for the test.
@jessecortez9449

15 year olds can get a Hardship License if their home situation necessitates an additional vehicle in use. I used to teach drivers ed and more and more kids today don't even want to drive at all cause they don't want the responsibility, they can just Uber/Lyft, or they just use their phones instead of seeing people in real life.

A formal course used to be required - and they are still available - but in some states the parents may elect to sign off on the paperwork claiming they taught their own child. While this may be traditional in many ways, consider the too-busy or just don't-give-a-damn attitudes of too many people today who will just sign the paper when their kid doesn't even know what the blinking lights mean. So yeah, like pretty much everything else in the world today, the drivers are getting worse.

I live in the US. I took a driver's ed course in high school as it was free and count as a class. I was given a learner's permit beforehand. My biggest problem was parking, especially parallel parking. I failed the test to pass the class the first time, but was offered a second chance. Then I had to go to Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), take a written exam and then take a driving test.

Ferris Bueller is Hughes' best movie, and probably the best comedy of the 80s and one of the best "teen" comedies ever. The odometer had 301.7 miles on it, not 3000. They are thinking putting the car in reverse will take off the miles. This is a High School movie. Remember they were talking about going to college. Ferris' girlfriend is a year younger. The idea is that Ferris wants to get out and see life because it goes by so fast. That's why he took this "skip" day and went to a Cubs game, went to the Chicago Art Museum, went to the top of the Hancock bldg, to the trading at the Mercantile Exchange, ate at a fancy restaurant Chez Luis, took part in a Chicago downtown German parade etc. Re the houses you see in these Hughes movies, they are always set in the nice north Chicago suburbs, because that's where Hughes grew up. So those neighborhoods are definitely upper class families with money. Notice Ferris' parents both have careers. That's why they are so big. Save Ferris became a huge catchphrase in American culture. So did that boring teacher taking attendance "Bueller...Bueller...Bueller". There is a great making of show about how the movie was made and all the funny behind the scenes stuff. That guy who played the teacher said that 20-25 years after the movie people still yell out "Bueller Bueller" when they recognize him. Btw, during the filming of this movie, Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey became an "item", they were secretly dating during the filming and I think they were together for quite awhile. I wish you would have let the ending credits roll completely with Rooney on the bus. That was a unique way to end the movie and keep everyone in their seats. Weren't you surprised about Ferris talking to the camera at the end?? And you didn't say anything about how he talked to the audience throughout. That was rarely done until Ferris Bueller. I highly recommend the movie War Games with Broderick. A light hearted comedy about the real possibility of nuclear war. Very well done movie. Your laugh and big white smile are great!!

Rely on the experience of your crew for that. Everything begins and ends on the written page. A movie can be poorly filmed but if the story is good? The audience won’t notice and even better? Won’t care”… I’ve shared this story with several colleagues who have worked with John who ALL said I must have caught him on a good day. In High school, my friend's parents used to own a liquor store, so he would steal hard liquor and we'd drink it on the way to school. My first class was driver's Ed (written, not "behind the wheel"). I actually got a commercial truck driving license for my first drivers license! Fun times.

I read somewhere that the producers of this movie put an ad in the Chicago paper calling for extras to be in the parade scene. They were hoping a couple of hundred people would show up. Instead they got a crowd of about ten thousand.

I think it might be as much a "youngest child" thing than a "boy" thing (as I'm sure anyone with a younger brother could tell you)--when you're the baby of the family, you can get away with anything (and Ferris knows this and exploits it by baby-talking to his parents all the time). Also, the actor who plays Cameron (and looks like the 13 reasons kid) is the older brother in Succession, where he plays an emotionally stunted over-privileged man-child... so basically Cameron's dad. (Only in Succession he doesn't have a kid.) Anyways, love the reactions. Keep at it!

I love your reactions, you're adorable and gorgeous :) No, Dirty Harry (1971) isn't a western, it's a thriller that has Clint Eastwood in it as a detective trying to catch a maniac sniper - highly recommend! Also, another John Hughes movie I recommend is Weird Science (1985) it's hilarious.

Questions from movie: -In the US, you can drive at 16 and there’s a test to get a driver’s license -A semester is a 4 month term. There’s 2 per year if you don’t attend over the summer and you count Christmas holiday off. -Farris and his friends are in high school. In college, they don’t care if you show up, so there’s no such thing as ditching. -The city of Chicago is all over this film. The guys giving hand signals were in the mercantile exchange, which is in the city. -The reason addresses are so long in the US is that they typically extend through a whole city or town. Usually the first digit is the number of blocks from one end. Loved this movie, I was too young to see it in the theater, but had a girlfriend that saw it. Only in 80s movies, are American middle class families in starter mansions. This is partly because of the changes to the tax structure and professions from the mid-70s on where able to get more lucrative contracts. The wealthy and upper-middle class had more expendable income and access to credit. This movie is very much from a teen perspective, so it’s a bit unreal for adults. Matthew Broderick was in Election, which is a movie you should add to your watchlist.

Matthew Broderick (Ferris) is known mainly for this and two other films, WAR GAMES and GLORY. And both are well worth your time to watch, GLORY especially (one of my top ten favorites from that era). Jennifer Grey (Ferris's older sister), as you mentioned, was huge after she starred in DIRTY DANCING. Then she made the fatal mstake of getting a nose job thinking it would help her career. It had the opposite effect, transforming her once very recognizable face into one that was notable only for how unremarkable it was. And it brings to mind the old saying, "If it aint broke, don't fix it." as her career was absolutely destroyed from that decision. As to the actor who played Cameron, the only part I've seen him in since was a small one as a bus passenger in the movie SPEED (which I think you saw). And Mr. Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) had a good career going for himself, for about 15 years after this, playing basically the same type of smarmy character in several other big movies. Then he got busted in Florida for child molestation. And that was the end of his career. A case perhaps of life imitating art.

Ferris and Cameron are 18 and seniors, while Sloan is 17, and a Junior. We get our permits at 15 & our licenses at 16. The parking garage attendants only added over 100 miles. The 3 white numbers are the miles, the yellow number is the tenths of a mile, so the car had 301 and 7 tenths of a mile when Ferris noticed. Also, I grasp that you said you're not a car person, but the car Cameron's dad had? Yeah, the book value on that car today with 150 miles on it is 17.5 MILLION dollars. Only 56 of them were ever made. Ferraris are a limited production brand, and the longer time passes, the fewer of them still exist, as people crash them, they breakdown, and parts are nearly impossible to get on a car that they only made 56 of 60+ years ago!

The high school now is a police station

Cameron's family is rich. Ferris family is upper middle class. Both parents work for the American dream this isn't rich, they just have more opportunities for their family this way, we have forgotten. A nice house in a nice neighborhood is all it was. And these neighborhoods were everywhere. You can tell it's not that rich fancy when he runs through the backyards. Just average and above. This was the 80s and every family strived for this. Now there are no nuclear families. No dads. This part of America failed cause everyone married in the 80s, 90s has died off. And no one is now. The truth hurts

A semester, as the term itself might suggest, is half of a school year. That's how most American school districts divide the school year, which typically starts in mid-August (used to be early-September) and ends in late-May or early-June (of the next calendar year; used to always be in mid-June). Some schools/districts divide the school year into three trimesters, however, and others in quarters. And the university I went to considered the summer break one of the quarters, so the regular school year was really divided into three "quarters" (trimesters), with one "quarter" being the summer break.

They are seniors in high school in the suburbs of Chicago. Students can start driving at 16 years with another experienced driver. You need a driver's permit or a license. Ferris and Cameron are 17-18 years old in their last year of high school. Ferris and Cameron are from upper middle-class families. The house is typical for a suburban house. Houses, in general, are large in the US.

Man, I LOVE your watchalongs, Dawn Marie! I think I have seen the entire movie, but in bits and pieces over time. I never saw it at the theatre, but unquestionably a classic. It really captures brilliantly 1980s high school culture....yes, high school. I can understand your confusion as the one classroom looked like a college / university lecture hall, but I'm guessing someone else here correctly identified the setting here. I don't understand the UK school system (still trying to understand the term "O-levels"), so we are even! Having been in high school when this film was released, although it was not my high school experience, it was a VERY accurate albeit hyperbolic representation of the middle-class, white suburbia American high school of the time. This movie is a great "feelgood" film, and so glad that you enjoyed it! Peace, dear Dawn Marie!!! You host the best watchalongs on the Internet!!!
