Its an important fact to keep in mind that Badlands and HKF are both fictional narratives. Badlands is the story of a group in a post-apocalyptic world and HKF is a modern Romeo/Juliet - Manic is the first album Ashley wrote about herself.

People still request a music video for Drive literally every day hahaha. I remember when I was learning to drive my parents bought me a beater with a stick shift because, and I quote , "you'll never be able to say you can't come home cuz you can't drive their car" hahahah. And try not to skip songs (even if they appeared on another album) cuz she usually tweaks them! A "Roman holiday" is when someone else is getting enjoyment while someone else is suffering... like, she was all messed up, but they pushed it aside and found happiness in each other on their "roman holiday". Colors is my favorite off this album, I think (the mv changes it a bit....) Halsey is A BIG fan of Taylor, she has a very similar writing style, even if the production style is completely different. Halsey also has been very vocal about having bipolar, so i think in control she's talking about the push and pull inside her brain.

Also in colors the lyric “I hope you make it to the day you’re 28 years old” is a reference to the 27 Club (all artists who died at 27) because the song is about Matty Healy who is the lead singer of The 1975!!

When this album came out I was OBSESSED, listened to it all the time, went to the badlands tour, etc. For the past few years though I’ve pretty much just been listening to her new stuff if I listen to Halsey but this vid is making me fall back in love with badlands

I was JUST giving this album a full relisten today because it looks like there might be something happening with the anniversary coming up. The production on this album really made it for me; the car sounds in Drive and the sound calling back to Hurricane on Gasoline when she says the word Hurricane... I think Roman Holiday and Haunting may be my favorites currently, but it shifts all the time. I think one of the reasons badlands is a straight masterpiece is the fact that she was so young when she wrote it!! She was only 19 and this album is her baby (as well as the fandom lol) Halseys stage presentation is to DIE for. I saw her twice for her HFK tours and it’s like she brings you into her world she created with the songs. Amazing. Seeing you react to her is so exciting ive been waiting for this!!

When I moved to Germany where my husband was stationed, after getting married, I was forced to learn stick because that was the only kind of cars we had and automatics are not as common in Europe. It is definitely something you'll keep forever and a great skill to know. Love the reaction! It took me a while to get into Halsey but I love her music now and this album is great!

Halsey is actually bipolar so some songs about fighting with someone is actually about her fighting herself, especially on Manic, she talks about her inner battle a lot and she is so f ing good with putting those feelings in writing 😍

Badlands is a post apocalyptic metaphor for mental health! So the person she’s fighting with for control is herself. Scared of what energy she can create and what she can do to herself. I never drove anything else (and so did all my friends) than stick. I feel like gear changing is the easiest part of driving. But in german driving school they always want you to learn to drive stick. They'll only let you do automatic if you wish for it or if you're bad at changing gears. But if you got your licences on an automatic you're not allowed to drive stick (the other way around is allowed of cause). Idk how it is in the USA.

As if! I was listening to the Album in my car yesterday and was like "I should write you to react to it" guess you could read my mind!!

If I remember correctly, Halsey said at one point that Control is about her bipolar disorder. I could be wrong though.

Castle is about her entrance into her career and experience with her new found fame. Hold Me Down is about her negative experiences and pressures with the music industry. New Americana is about the new society of well... America. The time now is a different age to even a few decades ago. The lyrics are intentionally “generic” and “radio-pop friendly” sounding. The song is self-aware and you really need to be a fan to understand it’s irony. (This is her least favorite she’s made because it doesn’t get her point across well) Drive is about having a relationship with someone who you love, but you both don’t know how to relay your feelings to each other. (This track is considered the ending of the background narrative of *BADLANDS* ) (She references California as never feeling like her home because she’s from New Jersey and spent a lot of time in New York as well). We’re skipping Hurricane Roman Holiday is about the exciting beginning of a relationship with her boyfriend when she was younger. It ended badly and the memories, even though positive, cause pain. They’re roman holidays. The song sounds happy, but it’s details aren’t. We’re skipping Ghost Colors is about her relationship with a person who she had to watch the “colors” leak out of them. They were first such a vibrant and saturated person, but soon fell victim to drugs and negative behaviors. (This is *rumored* to be about Matty Healy, the lead-singer and frontman of the band The 1975) Colors Pt. II is described by her as being the feeling she was left with after the relationship. (Acts like an interlude) Strange Love is about having media attention in her relationships. She’s sick of people wanting to know about her personal love life and try to manipulate every detail. Coming Down is about a guy she’s with. She knows he’s bad for her and that he’s never do anything for her, but she can’t help herself, she’s a fool. He seems so perfect, but I’m reality he’s a demon who feeds off her. (References to *Room 93* )(Religion is a reference to *Colors* )(References *Drive* with the intro sound) Haunting is about her want and lust for her ex. She’s in a relationship with a better person who’s “made of gold” (referencing *Empty Gold*, her ex is of empty gold, seemingly perfect and full of life), however she misses being with her ex and doesn’t want to leave them. Kind of a song about her negative obsession. Gasoline has multiple meanings. It’s about society and about her mental illness and negative behavior that’s grown. She paints herself in a negative light and reveals the flaws she has. (Reference to *Room 93* ) Control is about her suffering with her mental illness, Bipolar Disorder, and how she sees herself. Young God is explaining an abusive and manipulative relationship she had with a man. He came off of as charming and kind and promised that they’d be like “young gods... flying through the streets”. But quickly he shows his true colors and manipulates her for sex and asserts dominance. So she feels the need to suppress her feelings and thoughts because she feels small and trapped. (Religion is a reference to *Colors* and *Coming Down* ) I Walk the Line is her willing to lose everything for someone and go through hell for them. She describes sacrificing herself for anyone and constantly sings about her doing things to herself for her significant others. (It’s a cover) ----- Keep in mind she wrote this when she was 18-19 in 2014-2015. Super tragic album :( ----- My favorites: 1) Drive 2) Roman Holiday 3) Gasoline 4) Young God 5) Colors

castle is about getting a record deal and what the media and patriarchy will do to women in the music industry and how she refuses to let them do it to her. she’s gained some fame and fans have put her on a pedestal after her ep, and she’s gonna use that to the best of her ability to speak out about topics that she cares about. “agnes dei” is what the choir sings is latin for “lamb of god”. she’s saying that they are gonna try to sacrifice her like jesus for speaking her truths about her liberal beliefs. the castle is the core of the music industry and the old man on the throne is the patriarchy. the music industry is largely controlled by domineering men who she views as chauvinists. they are telling her to shut up and sing and warning her that if she tries to speak out against the status quo or change anything in their kingdom that she is going to get a beat down and be left outside the kingdom walls bruised. she doesn’t care, she says i’m not only gonna enter your kingdom, i am going to the castle. you can try and choke me so i can’t protest against this patriarchy, but in the end i’m gonna be the queen of your kingdom and i’m gonna be making the rules now. hold me down is also about her record label. she sold her soul to a three piece suit, that’s the holy trinity. these people look good and are trying to act like they’re her god, but she see’s them for the devil they are. this was her old label and she has since put them on blast for taking advantage of young hungry artists much like big machine did to taylor swift. they wanted her to work like a slave, not own anything and make bangers for the radio. they rushed her to make an album saying she would become irrelevant in the industry if she didn’t hurry up. she would try to stand up for herself and they would shush her (shut up and sing). they were trying to keep her under their control by holding her down but eventually she slipped out the back door. she still loves music though and it’s what she lives for, so she went and got a new label. they can try and knock her out and ruin her career but she’s gonna keep fighting and coming back for more. her demons inside demand that she speak her truths and nothing is gonna stop her.
