Eventually, Beatrix progressed in her training so much that she managed to do what almost no-one (man or woman) had managed to do before: she gained Pai Mei's respect and approval, so much so that he decided to teach her his most coveted and dangerous move, the Five-Point-Palm Exploding Heart Technique, which she would later use to kill Bill

I always had the feeling they were good friends once too - i mean O-Ren is the only one of the Vipers that gets an origin story in the movie. Maybe in an intimate moment in the past (possibly drinking together after a mission) O Ren might have revealed this about herself to Beatrix.

It's been a long time, but I think there was an interview with Thurman or Liu and they said the same. They approached their interaction as if the two were really close in the past. 54:40 yes! Kill Bill is poetry and most people seem to miss that. Kiddo only kills her own character foils - O'ren Ishii being her crime boss future if she never left, Vernita being the suburban housewife future she was denied, and Elle being what Kiddo was before (an assassin trained by Pei Mei and Bill's lover) - until she finally encounters Bill. When she and Bill fight, it's a abbreviation of their relationship; he thrusts, she catches his sword in her scabbard, and then she breaks his heart. When she encounters Budd, he kills her just like Bill had done and she has to "resurrect" a second time to finish her mission.

Here’s something you may have missed - in the origin of O Ren story when Boss Masumoto kills O Ren’s parents - the younger long haired male assassin with him WAS Bill - only much younger - you can tell by the ring he wears - maybe Hattori Hanzo was ashamed of Bill because he had sold his killer skills to the Yakuza and he was killing innocent women for hire. And there’s the possibility that Hanzo who lives in Okinawa, a US military run island may have known O Ren’s parents - her father was military.

Also love Bill’s monologue on superheroes and alter egos. Can’t wait for you guys to react to Jackie Brown eventually. Also to clear any confusion from Vol. 1 - It wasn’t two Chapter Twos, it was Chapter One: #2 as in number two on the bride’s death list which was Vernita Green which was the opening to Vol. 1. If you go back and watch you’ll see a circle circling around the number 2 like on the list she wrote at the end of Vol. 1. Don’t know if that was cleared up, just wanted to explain that.

I think Pei Mei taught Beatrix the five point palm exploding heart technique because he respected and maybe even came to like her. I mean, Elle was a bitch and killed Pei Mei, and Bill had more going for him cause he was a male, but Pei Mei made Beatrix's life a living hell for years and she took all his abuse stoically and i think he came to respect her for that. My favorite part is when Bud's boss says "It's calendar time" and then he calendars all over the place. There is a fan theory that Bud's Hatori Hanso sword is the same sword Butch uses when he rescues Marcellus Wallace... part of the whole "Tarantino's works all take place in the same universe" idea... same as the grave Beatrix gets buried in, belonging to Paula Schultz. Paula could very well be the late wife of Dr. King Schultz from Django Unchained. Both of these are contradicted by Tarantino himself saying that Kill Bill is itself a movie that exists within his cinematic universe. Best not to think too deeply on it though, since Tarantino contradicts the "timeline" in numerous ways. Best not to think too hard about it, his first and foremost priority is telling a good self-contained story.

Tarantino was a huge fan of Japanese and Chinese action / martial arts movies. He filmed and used the crews from Shaw Bros Studios as well as Toho Studios in Japan that all those great movies came from. Gordon Liu who played Johnny Mo in Vol 1 and Pai-Mei in Vol 2 was a huge star in the Shaw Bros movies. Enter The 36th Chamber series and so many others. The character Hattori Hanzo is based on a real man. From Wikipedia: Hattori Hanzō (服部 半蔵, c. 1542[1] - November 14, 1597) or Second Hanzō, nicknamed Oni no Hanzō (鬼の半蔵, Demon Hanzō),[2] was a famous ninja of the Sengoku era, who served the Tokugawa clan as a ninja, credited with saving the life of Tokugawa Ieyasu and then helping him to become the ruler of united Japan.[3][4] He is often a subject of varied portrayal in modern popular culture. Hanzō was known as an expert tactician and a master of sword fighting. There are many films and series where a Hattori Hanzo is the hero of the story. Sonny Chiba also played Hanzo in the 80’s Japanese TV series Shadow Warriors. It’s great. A Japanese soap opera but with Ninjas.

Casting David Carradine as Bill is the ultimate Iconic nod to Martial Arts --- He was Kwai Chang Caine in the 1970s ish TV show Kung Fu --- he was cast as an orphan who was raised by Shaolin monks and fled China after killing the emperor's nephew in retaliation for the murder of his kung fu master. --- He was nicknamed Grasshopper (I would be surprised if you never heard that reference) --- Also If you never heard of the real life death of David Canadine its something we will never know for certain --- Its way too much to put in this comment post but I never or will ever believe the official story to his passing -- you may want to look it up someday -- They tried to give him a humiliating and demeaning passing --- Rip David --- I hope you were avenged tho we will never know

So apparently Tarantino DID have plans to keep the franchise going. Vol 3 and 4 were going to be about Nikki coming back for revenge with Elle being her blind Master and killing Beatrix, he even planned on using the same child actors years later for the roles with Bebe having to walk the same path her mother and father did. HOWEVER as Tarantino waited for the right time to make the project a reality he realized something, the ending to Vol 2 is a good Happy ending for Beatrix and Bebe. So much that he loved the ending too much and decided against continuing the franchise cuz he loved the character to much to take away her happy ending.

I don't know if you noticed or if it's been mentioned, but the old Mexican pimp The Bride meets to find where Bill is living is played by the same actor who played Sheriff Earl McGraw in the first part. His name was Michael Parks, and he died a few years back, but he was one hell of a character actor. He also played a French mobster in the TV series Twin Peaks back in the early 90s...the man knew his accents. If you get to the end of Tarantino's work and still want more, you should check out two of his primary directorial inspirations, Brain De Palma and Sergio Leone. Incidentally, the scene where Uma got injured in part 2 was ultimately cut from the film, which is why you couldn't figure where it would have happened.

A lot of the story lines & production style here are an extension of the concept based on many of the black & white Cantonese Hong Kong kung fu movies from the late 1950 & 1960s. Apart from Bruce Lee's movies in the 1970s, the cinematic impact from these earlier local HK martial art movies is often overlooked. You could see their influences spreading across the world from Asia to the USA since the late 1980s. Matrix is a good example of that.

My head canon: Bill sent Budd to find out where Beatrix went. When he got to El Paso, Budd found her... and he found a woman, and fell in love. Budd didn't expect said woman to be at the wedding rehearsal. This is why he said that they all deserved to die, but realized that Beatrix deserved it as well, since her actions led to that massacre. It'd also explains why he told Bill he sold the sword in *El Paso* of all places. Perla Haney-Jardin was the hippie girl who sold Cliff the acid cigarette in "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood".

Bill (and by extension, Tarantino) is totally 100% wrong about Superman. He really is Clark Kent, adopted and raised from infancy by Jonathan and Martha Kent. He feels comfortable in this persona in which he can relax and be himself, even when it means allowing his natural clumsiness and social awkwardness to show through. "Superman" the superhero, a guise/affectation he assumed later in life, is the embodiment of a boyish fantasy figure even as it exists as another side of his personality.

Good ups. It would be cool if yall reacted to it and some other classic era Hong Kong/Taiwan kungfu films, but they probably wouldn't be the most popular with your main audience but who knows. You already love Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Hustle, and now Kill Bill. Explore the roots! My starter suggestions... Executioners From Shaolin (1977) - first film appearance of Pai Mei as a character, solid revenge kungfu with some crazy fiights and an already vicious and powerful Pai Mei in case you found this one lacking ha The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978) - the most popular classic kungfu, starring the Crazy 88 leader and the Pai Mei from Kill Bill, Gordon Liu, training and learning lessons Five Deadly Venoms (1978) - perhaps the second most popular, showcases numerous fighting styles and powers, little bit of a whodunit Drunken Master (1978) - jackie chan's second film as a lead which put him on the map in China, the english dub is hilarious, jackie chan was already 100% jackie chan, really cool Shaolin vs Lama (1983) - one of my faves, really like the villain, really like our main teacher, best fight over a roast chicken ever, great fights all around, good lessons Dirty Ho (1979) - another personal fave, another Gordon Liu as our lead, really good disguised fights where the fighters are trying to keep the fights a secret as they fight, plus a wheelchair fight Legendary Weapons of China (1982) - takes all the cool and crazy parts of classic kungfu cinema and puts them all in one film, and answers the question: can you master kungfu to the point where you can stop bullets? Lots of other good ones. 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, Master of the Flying Guillotine, Heroes of the East, Martial Club, Shaolin Temple (1976 version), etc

1:31 - Was ACTUALLY printed on the Volume 1 posters. 2:00 - If you were familiar with the actor playing Bill, you knew who he was back in the first movie. 8:48 - the club owner is Larry Bishop. He's a minor cult star for his roles as bikers in the 70s. He even made an appearance on Kung Fu alongside David Caridean (Bill). 20:57 - Pai Mei is inspired by the Japanese mytho-historical character Bak Mei. He has appeared in several classic martial arts films, particularly the movie Clan of the White Lotus. He's played here by Gordon Liu, the father of O-ren Ishi actress Lucy Liu. 36:23 - Gotta love that the REAL black mamba is afraid of her. After you're done with Tarentino, why don't you check out his partner in crime, Robert Rodriguez? I suggest starting with arguably his most famous movie, Desperado.

This film was too exhausting to for everyone involved especially Uma and Vivica A Fox, Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah, and David Carradine all had to train eight hours a day for three months. They'd get in trouble if they were even a minute late to training, and Quentin Tarantino reviewed their progress every week, Uma said we had to do 3 styles of kung fu, 2 styles of sword fighting, knife throwing, knife fighting, hand-to-hand combat, Japanese speaking. It was literally absurd," she said. Fox ended up lashing out and said ‘Are we fucking doing anything right? Goddamn.’ Everyone gasped. She felt Uma draw back. Lucy grabbed her hand and was trying to do a kind of acupressure on her, whispering, ‘Calm down. Calm down” That is an incredible amount of work to put in for the cast, and having Tarantino rip their training apart made things even more difficult While this could have helped everyone's performance in the film, it was clearly taxing on all the actors.

I used to work in a shit hole factory. When we came in we had to scan our profile cards. We could swipe in upto 19 minuets after our work started and we could swipe out 19 minutes before our shift ended. If you were 20 mins late coming in or 20 mins early going out you lost 2 hours of pay. Obviously everyone was trying to come in late and leave early. But there was only 1 machine to swipe your card in. So if you left it until 6:19am to swipe in when your shift started at 6am the amount of workers trying to swipe in at the last minute would often put you in that 6:20am with 2 hours loss of pay. It was a fantastic way of getting people in on time.
