It's amazing how this movie can make a peacock of all animals so scary. I've always considered Lord Shen the closest thing DreamWorks has to Scar, Disney's best villain. He's cold, calculating, his past directly ties in with the protagonist's, and there's so much depth to his character, plus Gary Oldman's performance is impeccable. I also love Po's struggle to find his true self and inner peace, and that "Po Finds the Truth" sequence in the panda village is so beautiful, yet so heartbreaking.

The soothsayer was confirmed in an old now deactivated website for the movie to be Shen’s old babysitter, and that’s why he doesn’t kill her and instead sends her away, he can’t find it in himself. Another fun fact- the scene of Po trying to meditate with water droplets falling on his head is a reference to chinese water torture, considered one of the worst tortures in the world, where a person goes crazy after hours or days of being tied down with drops of water falling on top of their heads in an unpredictable irregular frequence The cinematography, score and transitions during the scene that Po finds out about his past is amazing and still gives me chills until this day. There’s symbolism within the fact that Shen is an albino peacock, as white is the color of death in traditional chinese culture. While Shen is always represented by white and red, you’ll notice that Po is always represented by yellow. That is especially evident during the montage scene of Po and the five going to Gongman City and Shen training (which is a super cool scene visually with the cell shading!) I also love the use of 2D animation in some scenes, both to represent dreams and Po’s foggy memories, and then the switch to 3D when he finally remembers the moment he last saw his mother with clarity, giving the viewers this jarring effect of remembering that this was real and actually happened. The animators also said that animating Shen fighting was like animating 7 different characters due to his complexity! I absolutely adore his style and how he has feather shaped blades under his real feathers and uses his peacock tail as a shield and distraction It’s also funny that Shen chose wolves as his henchmen, as they’re very family-oriented animals. And that did end up backfiring, as they stopped obeying to him as soon as they realized that they would be killing their own as well. When Shen tells Po that his parents never loved him, that was 100% him projecting his own feelings on to Po trying to cause him pain. It’s what he believed about his own parents. All he yearned for was to somehow prove that they were wrong about him and about banishing him by conquering more than they ever could. It’s how the Soothsayer says, the cup he chooses to fill has no bottom and nothing will ever be enough for him, none of this will ever fix the deep wounds he has and the feelings of inadequacy and rejection he has harbored. The scene where he talks about playing on his father’s throne when he was little and dreaming of one day sitting on it, only for them to make a dry cut to it getting thrown out the window like trash sent chills down my spine. He ends up destroying the entire palace and the only living memory of his parents and their legacy in the name of his quest of pure insanity. During this whole movie Po learns to move on from his past, that he chooses and defines who he is, so Shen is the perfect villain as someone who could never move on and that was his ultimate downfall. That is exemplified in an even more literal manner when during their last fight Shen is cutting the ropes that cause his machine to fall on top of him and he just closes his eyes and accepts his own end. He’s one of my favorite villains in all of media and such a good written character. I also love Po and Tigress’s relationship in this movie. How she was about to open up about her own painful past to him during the boat scene but got interrupted In any way, this movie is an absolute masterpiece and I could talk about it for hours.

Shen's final battle is a perfect picture of his overall story. The hardening of his heart in the face of defeat. Taking the first move and choosing violence. Mind so focused on combating the warrior of black and white that he does not see what is happening in the present. The precariously hanging cannon hanging over him like fate. The cutting of the strings and support beams like the cutting away of his family, friends, and generals. How his own actions are what will cause his end. And finally, when he does see the danger he has placed himself in, it is through a shadow falling over him. The premonition of what is coming. Only this time, when faced with the future, he accepted his fate. In his last moment, he finally focuses on the now. But not through any character growth. Rather, because his present has caught up to his future and he cannot look any further. It is the end in every sense of the word.

_Kung Fu Panda 2_ was by far the most emotional film of the franchise and like _Shrek 2_ it’s as good if not better than the first _Kung Fu Panda_ considering that there’s more action, it’s more darker than the first film, and especially we learn more on Po's backstory and his troubled past that triggers PTSD for Po that remained an internal conflict for him throughout the film which leads to Po on learning to _"not fight it, but to let it flow"_ just to find his _Inner Peace,_ especially when he faces off against Lord Shen the 2nd time. Also, Lord Shen is such an awesome villain and voiced none other than Oscar Winner, Gary Oldman. In fact, Gary Oldman was a huge fan of the first _Kung Fu Panda_ that he wanted to have a role in the second film as Shen.
@heyitsmira17

Dreamworks has a tendency of making the sequel better than the first movie. Shrek 2 is the best, with Shrek trying to change who he is to please the woman he loves; How To Train Your Dragon 2, with Hiccup trying to find his place within his community: is he a leader like his dad? Is he a free spirit like his mom? It's hard to tell; Kung Fu Panda 2 with Po trying to understand _who_ he is and his past. In the end, the sequels are always about finding out who you truly are and your place in the world. Your appearance, your birth, your past, none of that defines you. It's your whole life, journey and choices for the future that will truly lead you to happiness.

Dreamworks has the ability of doing the opposite of what Disney did, and, in most cases, with their sequels, they do what Disney doesn't. Makes it better, because they layer the story, making it flow on from the first. (Personally, Disney did do it well with The Lion King 2, but yeah, not many others)

I've always been very fond of the relationship Tigress and Po build throughout this series. It feels so genuine and abnormal for her specifically, as she's been so solitary since her childhood. Po is likely her first attempt at friendship outside of the Furious Five, and I think it shows how much she's grown as a person outside of being the greatest fighter of them all. I would kill to hear what she was going to say on the boat ride to Gongman City before she was interrupted.

Fun fact: The sequence of attacks fron Po at 6:15 is basically in reference to the fact that the real life style of Kung Fu that Po's movements are loosely based on, fittingly named the *Dragon style* , is essentially all about mixing together all the other styles (Tiger, Viper, Crane etc)

I’m going to be upfront, but this film was my introduction to Michelle Yeoh’s (The Soothsayer) work as an actress, granted she has been well known in the film industry through her contributions in _Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha_ and _The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor_ along with the fact she was a well-known actress in Hong Kong during the 1980’s and early-mid 1990’s, but without this film, I wouldn’t have been introduced to the rest of Michelle Yeoh’s earlier work (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha) and her later acting work following _Kung Fu Panda 2_ like _Crazy Rich Asians, Shang Chi_ and especially _Everything, Everywhere, All at Once_ which earned her her first Academy Award for leading actress.

Shen fully represents the "if you don't learn how to bend, you will break" and by the end even he knew it: when the weapon falls on him Shen looks up at it without the desperation he had a few seconds before, he doesn't try to escape it, he just closes his eyes and gives up. Shen couldn't change, he couldn't bend and so he breaks. And Po's character drives the point home by contrast, his arc shows that no one is inherently incapable of change, you can and should learn to bend and adapt cause there comes a point where the thing stopping you from changing is yourself, making you your own downfall- like Lord Shen

What I love about Lord Shen is that he’s a compelling and skillful animated villain. Animated villains like him are what I like the most because his character is reminiscent of the classic villain characters from the golden age of Disney, like Jafar and Scar for example. From the get go, we see Lord Shen being a bad guy and that’s great. He has his own agenda and would do anything in his power to execute it, just like the other animated villains that came before him. I, myself prefer these kinds of villains like Lord Shen in animated films. They can be fun, menacing, and cool characters, not like the majority of the twist villains we’ve had in later animated films.

I found it odd that when the soothsayer told the prophecy, we always saw a Yin Yang symbol as the warrior of black and white. I didn’t get it when I watched it the first time, but seeing it now with some years under my belt I think I get the symbolism. Yin Yang is usually seen as a depiction of balance and Po at the beginning and Shen throughout were unbalanced. Shen not only projected his anger and hate onto Po but to me he actively tried to unbalance him and it worked, Po’s lack of balance nearly killed him. It wasn’t until he finally faced who he was and where he came from that he finally found his inner peace i.e. is balance. So in the end Shen was not only killed by a literal black-and-white warrior he was killed by a balanced warrior; something he could never be or even refused to be. It was an interesting duality.

It actually depends on the ammunition whether cannon shots explode or not. Muzzle-loaders can be loaded by both solid and explosive balls, the latter even having a sharpnel-like internal grapeshot variant. That said, the explosion most of the time in movies is rather to hide the fact that whatever is hit even by a solid cannonball WILL explode. Whether it be the hardwood plating of a pirate ship, or a person's body. In open field battles, they moreover angled the cannons so the ball could hit the ground and ricochet further along, improving range and causing it to pass through multiple targets in a row. This is why cannon fire was so devastating against packed lines of infantry; and often the only solution to counter it.

Tai Lung may have been a villain, but his style was very straight forward using his strength to overpower his enemies. Shen cutting the ropes was so similar to Clayton in Tarzan cutting the vines. Granted Clayton didn’t accept his death as easily as Shen. I love this movie primarily because of the Soothsayer’s quotes. Especially the quote about not having a happy beginning, there are so many villains in fiction and real life who have had great beginnings but turn or they have terrible beginnings and dont try to look for something better. Even heroes have it and its just interesting to take that quote and look at other fandoms and real life people.

Lord Shen is one of my fav animated villains for sure! he's so evil but not in an overdone stupid way, more like you can tell he was raised very spoiled and doesn't care about much beyond himself, you can read a lot into his character.

On cannonballs and related ammunition - yes, many kinds of cannonballs _were_ packed with powder with timed fuses. "The bombs bursting in air" in the Star Spangled Banner were cannonballs that exploded before reaching their target. It's one thing for the kinetic energy of a cannonball to tear a hole in the wall. It's quite another when the powder inside goes off, shredding anything nearby.

You guys are rewatching at a good time because not a lot of people know that a 4th movie is coming out. If you google Kung fu panda 4, it says it’s release date is March 8, 2024. So like a year from now so not too close but still exciting. Also the second one is my favorite out of the 3. I love learning about the backstory of Po ( the scene where it changed animation from the white and red to the normal movie animation with his mother comforting him and then leaving him and he starts crying always makes me ball out sobbing) and seeing his and tigresses relationship. You see the character development in the furious 5 including Tigress and I just love to see how she cares for Po. Plus lord shen really is a great villain with that canon weapon that nearly killed them all and it was man made or peacock/wolf made and everything just proves how hard working and determined he is, it is what makes a good villain. He refuses to give up until he gets what he believes he deserves. I also believe that the part you were watching at 32:35 to 35:00 is like the best part of the movie next to learning of Po’s past. Anyway, love your guys videos and hope you have a good day. 😊

Why I like this movie the most is because i realized that Po wasn't the "warrior of black and white who would stop him" from the prophacy it was acutally Lord shen himself he caused everything to happen even his own death and is acutally wearing black and white the whole movie

@@malytheson I will agree for the jokes. Granted, his jade weapon does look cool, but so are Lord Shen's steel feather blades. As for voice, I wound need to flip a coin to choose, who among Ian McShane, Gary Oldman and J.K. Simmons has the best voice (to me). Maybe Ian McShane after all, he was the only one that made me moist.

This KFP sequel is my second favorite from Dreamworks! I love how we get expansion on the lore in this film, that extends outside the Valley of Peace. Having two major characters, Po and Lord Shen being the primary focus and how they share a scenario together in this story, leading up to their confrontations is a compelling plot point. KFP2 still carries the comedic charm from the first film and has and engaging premise with higher stakes. That’s what I love about this Dreamworks sequel. That and it has done better than it’s predecessor.

Kung Fu Panda 2 is the best in the trilogy BY FAR. And a huge part of it us due to the villain. Shen, voiced by the talented Gary Oldman, is a monster that deserved everything he got. But we know just enough about him and he has such a fun personaliry for an antagonist that you can't help but feel just a *smudge* of pity for him. Also, this movie actually gives us more of the Furious Five, Tigress in particular. And I'm not afraid to admit that the sequence of Po letting go of his trauma gets me teary eyed to this day. Its a *powerfull* scene, compounded only by the triumph of the final battle.

27:19 That art style (for the characters at least) is from Nico Marlet. He has done the concept art for many movies including How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda and more. He was a huge contributor and inspiration to the unique designs of the dragons in HTTYD, and also the opening of the first Kung Fu Panda movie was also in his style. His designs for both movies can be seen in the final products. I highly recommend looking up his art it’s some of my favorite.

Absolutely one of those memorable moments seeing a movie impact what I guess was a 5-8 year old boy.

If the two of you want to watch a film done in the style of Kung Fu Panda's 2d, Chinese ink backstories, they actually DO have a couple short films from the franchise you can react to! Them being: "Secrets of the Furious Five" and "Secrets of the Scroll". They harken back to the art style even if it's not as textured compared to the main films. It's also a neat little look into the Furious Five. Give you some of their backstory!

Yeah, this movie is awesome and it was even better than the first one! Just like Shrek 2, this movie improves upon what made the first movie of the franchise so great! This sequel takes a more serious tone, the action is a lot more intense and even the villain is a lot darker. There are even some emotional moments, surprisingly! I remember watching this movie as a kid and actually shedding a tear during certain scenes. Didn't think that would happen in a movie called "Kung Fu Panda 2". This is an outstanding film! I also really like Kung Fu Panda 3, but it's definitely not as good as this one or the first one.

it would be cool if you reacted to kung fu hustle, they have a similar way of being able to blend serious and cool elements with slapstick comedy (in which some moments might seem a bit too ridiculous for others but it's enjoyable to me), which was why kung fu panda reminded me of a kid's version of kung fu hustle. the director stephen chow is the main actor in the film and the fight choreography is really cool along with good casting, i think you'll like it. he also did other films like shaolin soccer, cj7, journey to the west: conquering demons and the mermaid.

The three movies each represent a big overarching theme Body Mind Soul, Present Past Future Mind and Past take the stage with this movie, in Po finding as well as accepting his past and challenging his mind against Shen To say nothing of Oogway's "one often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it" with Shen actively leading to his own defeat by going after the pandas and Po ending up where he does/as who he is And it also applies to Shen, being an albino peacock, and cutting the ropes that bring down the cannon onto his head, thus he is defeated by a warrior of black and white twofold

People forget how good Shen's fighting style is cause his more like an army general but he took on 3 masters and whoop 2 of them. The way he use his tail to distract Master Croc followed by a kick while swordfighting Master Ox is amazing. His not as devastating as Tai Lung, nor as durable as Po but Shen is a master of his own

Coming from an adoptee standpoint, the movie hits HARD. If you're not adopted you can only learn about the pain, but it feels like there's a part of you missing that you will NEVER understand. Darwin says that as human beings, we seek comfort. We know when it's been taken from us, and we won't be satisfied or feel complete until we have it back. If you know who your family is and where you come from...please don't take that for granted. Because some folks don't have that. What we get is a puzzle, and our past are those few annoying pieces that you can never find that make it whole. Growing up others would talk about how they looked like their mom or had their dad's eyes. I don't even know who mine WERE or if they're even still alive. This movie was beautiful. Even if it was a touch unrealistic (as VERY few adoptees ever find their parents), it's about who you are now and what you choose to become and that's because of those you have around you now, not who might have been.
