I SO relate with the cluttered table. Except it still happens to us now. I’m gonna go binge watch your minimalist journey to hopefully get inspired to do the same! Haha

You have done amazing! I’ve slowly started my journey now. I definitely can relate to your old videos. My hubby wasn’t on board at first but he slowly coming around and helping me. My kids absolutely hated it at first but now they see they don’t have to clean their space up as much or as often they are starting to come around to. We recently did our clothes. 4 kids and each had roughly 30-50 shirts a piece. I first told them to go pick out 5 shirts they didn’t want or didn’t fit anymore. The next week we did the same thing. Did that for 4 weeks. This past weekend I told them to pick 10 shirts they wanted to keep and toss the rest. We also took winter items out first and boxed that up for storage. Did the same with dishes. My husband had the hardest time with the dishes. I had to do the dishes over a months time. Convincing him we didn’t need 20 knifes and 10 spatulas was like telling a kid they can’t have candy but going into a candy store. 😂

My husband's parent's table is never clear. When we go over for dinner we have to stack papers, throw away garbage, move money and cigarette cartons. Then we are still eating on the edge. I'm always happy to see my nice clean table at home after!

@ariannapflederer
@ariannapflederer 4 года назад
Haha, it should not make you feel terrible at all! Honestly, if I see others houses like this, I don’t even give it a second look. It’s just my own house having a personal knowledge of what is needed and what is not needed. And as I said, in many of these, back then my PTSD was more severe and that definitely played a role in my lack of motivation to tidy and get rid of things. Which in the long run, getting rid of things has actually helped my anxiety and PTSD!

Yep love fridges. If i had money to spend idk if id get a super fancy one but id get a double one for sure with an ice dispenser. Ive never had a double fridge/freezer. Always the old fashioned kind. And id get an upright freezer as well for extra food storage like prepped meals harvest from the garden that sort of thing. In summer especially here in aus we need like the whole top freezer shelf for ice and the whole door shelf for icepacks and a whole shelf in the fridge door for waterbottles and then half the top shelf in the fridge is water the other half is milk so like it really takes up space but is all very much needed when its above 30 degrees for most of the year and sits around 40 degrees during the day for about 3-6 months so yeah lol ice ice baby. I doubt id ever spend money on one with a tablet screen type thing to me thats a crazy thing haha. But an ice and coldwater dispenser would be so luxurious and amazing and perfect for our weather. Like 😍😍😍. Haha. Theres basically nothing else besides like plants antiques or books that i enjoy shopping. Shopping for me is like torture. Even when its something i love its hard.

I went without a table for years. When I finally got one, I was sooooo tempted to use it as a catchall. I had to ask myself, "Where did you put this when you didn't have a table?" It worked... _almost_ always. 😂😂

Well done! Good on you for showing this too. I know it can be a bit embarrassing or cringey to look back especially when even the thought of being that person again makes you feel like cold horror ahaha. Im like that when i remember my really messy teenage / depressed stage. Like ooo. Nope. Now ive developed a very much clean as you go vibe and have a general schedule i follow naturally like the rhythm of my lifes different i prioritise things differently and i adore and enjoy having a clean neat curated space. As a teenager i was too busy and wanting to try everything and growing so quickly and adopting different styles and phases that i had to change my room near constantly it was an evolution of self on fast forward for about 10 years. When i hit my twenties it was like hallelujah i feel like im finished terraforming myself and am settling into the ecosystem im suppose to be lol. Granted im still 25 so im not set in my ways or whatever yet and im certainly hoping im going to keep growing as a person but at least a large majority or who i am whats important what i want my life to be etc is all settled and gives me a reassuring centre to draw from and anchors me when its stormy and knowing yourself and your needs just really makes life easier. Im glad i was once growing tiny ecosystems in mugs of old tea in my room at any given time it lead to me being someone who now only uses one hot drink cup and washes it between uses and everytime i get up i naturally tidy things so i neber feel super overwhelmed unless im tackling my mothers or my childhood old boxes in the shed. Ive done so much but it really is a lifestyle change cultivating the life you want by saying goodbye to the old one can be hard but im really glad ive done it and continue to renew myself with each season. Thanks for sharing & i really enjoy all those sort of decluttering and minimalism and general household management type videos 💖💖💖

Crazy to look back at all those videos. Been around since before Rev was born. I remember seeing it and truthfully being jealous of your old apartment, but I was in a crazy toxic situation. I’ve tried to cut down on my own stuff. I’ve got all my sentimental stuff in a trunk and art stuff and that’s pretty much it.

Do you think once your girls get older, especially when they're teens, minimalism will get harder to execute because they just start to accumulate their own things and/or maybe not listen as well? That's how I was as a teen😂
@ariannapflederer
@ariannapflederer 4 года назад
I am sure there will be some things that are more difficult. But, overall probably not in the same way with a non-minimalist family. Part of being a minimalist family is raising our kids to understand that things are not as important as experiences! Removing that societal need for excess should make that much less of an issue 🙂

That's what my house looks like when I get really depressed/my cptsd flares up real bad haha! Maybe the minimalist lifestyle would help me out during those times in the future... 🤔😜
@ariannapflederer
@ariannapflederer 4 года назад
It’s definitely made those times better for me! It doesn’t make your PTSD just disappear, cause obviously that’s rooted in other things. But it makes it a lot easier to process and focus on what you need to, when you aren’t surrounded by a ton of things that fill your subconscious mind all the time. When I am in a more depressed state now, even a little clutter can bother me. I am sure it’s a control thing, because it’s one of the few things you can control when you feel like you can’t control your emotions. Having just started reprocessing a repressed memory in therapy too, I feel like I have been able to have shorter periods of deeper depressions and heightened anxiety overall. Where as, if I was trying to reprocess this prior to being a minimalist, I think the state of my home would have made things a lot harder for me to work through!

We bought a “fancier” fridge when we built our house. Fancy just means - more things can go wrong. Also 5 years later it’s not really so fancy anymore as they now have tablets built into fridges (but why?).
@ariannapflederer
@ariannapflederer 4 года назад
Lol, my idea of fancy isn’t the stuff that makes things break easier (ie mechanics, tablets etc). I don’t really have an urge to have a screen on my fridge, cameras, etc. I am more so talking about the fancy storage options, like a lot of the Kitchen Aid refrigerators I love!
