As far as I can remember, even though it did make a lot of money overall, a sequel almost was not made because it cost so much to make the movie and market it (which I think was about 3 x's the budget). I think it barely broke even after quite some time being in theaters and then I think it took even longer after that to finally make barely any profit that it is a miracle a sequel even got made since sequels usually cost even more to make. Again, as far as I can remember, I think it was considered insane at the time that even after all the fandom mania this movie had, it still took so long for any news of a possible sequel to come. A sequel was not a sure thing. It does seem crazy to think about it that a movie can make a lot of money, but still not make a profit or barely break even because the movie just costs so much to make and market it. But, that is the game nowadays with so many movies.

Fun fact, how they designed the monsters was in two stages. They made a first version where it abided one rule: a human had to fit inside of it. Since this was inspired by the man-in-suit monsters of Japan, the design would not pass if it could not be realistically made into a costume for someone to wear. That’s why the designs look so alien despite feeling so organic. The second version was when they added real anatomical efficiency to the creatures based on real animals. That concept art we see from the film are from the second stage, so it makes me curious as to what the first stage concept art looked like.

just to explain: The Martial Combat test in the middle of the film to find Raleigh's co pilot doesn't seek to find the best fighter, it seeks to see which is the most compatible with the other person. If someone defeated Raleigh without raleigh getting a single hit, that meant that that guy could read Raleigh's head but Raleigh couldn't read his. that meant they're not compatible as they need both pilots to havethe same mind. same would be for if Raleigh beat the other person. Mako and Raleigh got a hit back and forth and that showed how balanced and how compatible they are. what the test seeks is a tie.

@@jemal999 even though they didn't kiss it doesn't necessarily mean that their bond was not romantic, their relationship in the movie was actually rather ambiguous, they became close friends & partners who really cared about each other, but there were also some hints throughout the movie that suggested that they might've also had romantic feelings for each other. And there was a comic book series that was released after the first movie that served as a sequel to the movie, and in the comics Raleigh & Mako got married & had a child together. So at least in the comics their relationship was definitely romantic, but it's not 100% clear in the first movie.
@iamlinda100
@iamlinda100 Год назад
not necessarily, just because they didn't kiss in the movie does not mean their relationship wasn't romantic, they could very well had romantic feelings for each other, they simply just didn't express it, there were romantic undertones to their bond in the first movie, it's just not 100% clear. And in the non canon sequel comics Raleigh and Mako got married.
@Souledex
@Souledex Год назад
@@jemal999 They shot a kiss, and then shot one without it. So it was definitely on the creators minds and the fact that they went without it is clearly a choice. I think the most important part of the emphasis is that drifting with someone is a more intimate experience than a person has ever had. Whatever they feel for each other they both know and understand it, they are possibly even too close to be lovers as strange as that is to say.

If anyone here hasn't read the novelization I highly recommend it. It's not as epic as the movie but has much more lore. For example, 53:29-53:38, the first Kaiju ever wasn't killed by tanks. It was killed by SEVERAL nuclear bombs. Until the Mark 1 Jaigurs were complete EVERY Kaiju had only been killed by a series of nukes. This was Slaturn, the first ever category 5 Kaiju. And you're surprised ONE nuke didn't stop it? Another fun sample. Part of the reason Pentacost ended up taking Mako in was that her father's family, traditional Japanese sword-makers, didn't want a girl. Brings a whole new meaning to the chainswords Mako gave Gipsy Danger.

Fun facts about the movie! Jaeger pilots were actually trained to inflict minimum damage as they could to the cities( i.e., the part where Eureka shoots the kaiju where theres no buildings when it falls , gypsy walking over the bridge) according to one of the books its why pilots preffered to fight on open water, bc they could allow themselves to go HAM with it Striker Eureka was actually going to be the main character, but it was scrapped bc he looked too fancy and "main character ish* , so they went for a more battle worn one like gypsy Jaegers seem to actually have have some sense of themselves( yes the machines, example: gypsy *flinches* when they get acid thrown on her, typhoon shakes their head when they get thrown down ), and some have been known to even move or twitch when their pilots are asleep, meaning in a slight way theyre still connected Adding to the prev one,pilots can actually tell sometimes when something"feels weird " whiting the machinery on the inside (lose cables?screws? Dirt,rust and blood stuck somewhere? Yep they feel it, apperently its like an itch that wont go away) Guillermo actually wanted to cast a set of 4 identical chinesse girls for crimson typhoon and give it 4 pairs of arms, making it in a total of 8 and instead of a "fox* motif use a spider one for it, they apparently couldn't even find two sets of twins that even looked alike enough so he settled for tripplets (lol ) There was going to be a latam jaeger, named "Obsidian jaguar"(i think in honor of the "obsidian mirror god",that could turn himself into a jaguar) it didn't make to final cut, but they used the idea in a way, later on Pilots movements where directed to be slow and even sluggish, because they themselves where supposed to be moving a 8000 pound machine, they really nailed it because it does look lije the jaegers are making 8000 pounds of dammage with their hits Gypsys and eurekas designs where more "modern" , with more human like features and movements ( cherno doesnt have fully movable hands,and crimson has blades for hands+it could do that thing with its waist) this was because that way pilots could connect better with them, and not feel so *out of skin*.

And then the Kaiju groupie who "happens" to have studied ALL the remaining Jaegers does the whole hookup thing (remember, it goes both ways)... and the very next attack is by multiple Kaiju, specifically targeting weaknesses they did not previously know about. I always wanted to see more reaction to that. If it happened that way in the real world (like in 1942 when a congressman bragging about our Pac Fleet subs said the Japs could not hit them because the Japanese depth charges were always set too shallow) we would see a much larger response from the higher chain of command (near instant deactivation of the Jaeger force for one)

I wouldn't say there weren't scenes that insinuated a romantic relationship anywhere in the film (for instance, the scene where Raleigh says that he hadn't really thought about the future until "now" and is looking straight at Mako, which I read as him seeing a future with her or something of the sort), but I like the fact that they didn't go full Hollywood romance with it and made it more subtle - only giving us hints here and there as to their literal unspoken bond, which made the dynamic seem more realistic to me.

When this was in theaters I took my friend and her two young children to see it. Her oldest son, he was in middle school at the time and into Transformers, was like "awww Pacific Rim, what's that about?" Had no idea what this movie was, had never heard of it, and the entire movie neither of those children got up to go to the bathroom, they were in awe of the spectacle i think every kid should watch a movie in theaters that either involves giant robots, giant monsters, or both in the same film, at least once before high-school

This movie is amazing at putting to scale the Kaiju and the Jaegers. Every movement and hit shows the massive weight behind these things. Also remember the Jaegers cost a ton of money and take time to build. The rate of Kaiju attacks is increasing outpacing the rate at which Jaegers can be built, not to mention the financial strain it is putting on the world economy. If I remember correctly, it is mentioned that rationing of food and supplies on the Pacific Rim is occurring.

I know you lot may not see this, HUGE FAN of your channel, but this is my favorite movie next to the LOTR Trilogy: -SO the reason why people didn't live in the centres of countries is because those areas became so expensive to live in because they were safer and the coasts on the Rim were cheapest or cost nothing because they were technically no go zones. -The reason why The Wall became a plot point was because Del Toro said in an interview "it's something stupid that a group of politicians would suggest". -Alot of this movie was practical effects. They only made one cockpit and just changed the lighting to help you think this was a different yeagar i.e. Blue for Gipsy, Green for Cherno Alpha, Red for Crimson Typhoon, Orange and light blue for Striker etc. -The inspiration for a lot of the movies designs were made because Del Toro had all the concept artists be cut off from any outside influences by all of them going down into his personal design studio he named "The Submarine" so that they could make completely original designs. -The reason why they didn't use the sword earlier in the fight was because of Kaiju Blue blood toxicity. In the Year One comic the Jaeger pilots were trained to not spill too much blood because it would make the area uninhabitable otherwise. They should have mentioned it in the movie but they did in the novel I think. -In the beginning the aircraft that was destroyed by the Kaijus tail actually had Idris Elbas (Stacker) sister in there. Her best friend and Stacker became pilots together but she during the defense of Tokyo (as seen in the drift) she passed out from radiation sickness and Stacker was forced to pilot Coyote Tango himself. Because of their illnesses that was the last time they piloted together. -They originally wanted Mako to speak nothing but Japanese in the original draft and as the movie progressed as the more Raleigh and Mako drifted they began speaking each others languages. Sadly this was scrapped and was utilised in another comic book story called Tales of the Drift (worth the read) -Slattern (the final boss category 5 Kaiju) is bigger than Godzilla. If Big G could survive a nuclear blast so could Slattern I suppose. - Stupidest thing said in this movie "They have two brains like a dinosaur" Dinosaurs never had second brains. - Stupidest thing about this movie: 6 helicopters pulling a robot that weighs 1,980 tonnes...sure Jan. -I thoroughly love this franchise because it so character rich and every part of this world drips with detail. Yeah it's monsters fighting robots but Del Toro said "so does that mean it can't have depth?". Every single character feels real, different people from different walks of life coming together to save the world, a lot fo the fight scenes were taken from a helicopter POV or bystander viewpoint and the robots have actual weight to their movements and directors usually avoid dark fight scenes but Del Toro and his team nialed it. PLus one of the few movies where we Australians are properly represented as the badasses we are :P (I have a Striker Eureka tattoo) Thanks for reading! Have a great day!

My favorite thing about this movie, aside from the phenomenal creature and mech designs, is the pure, unadulterated JOY and love that you can see went into it. They didn’t have to go so hard, they didn’t have to make it so freaking good, painstakingly adding true weight, brilliant watershed effects, and hilarious random details like the objects falling out of the cargo containers…..but they did. Guillermo did his forefathers justice with this one. It’s a love letter to so many genres of film and television, so beautifully married into one glorious concerto of badassery and mayhem. Has anyone suggested The Host (2006)? That's a great modern monster movie. I still hold hope for the seeing the original Godzilla on the channel. The rest of the Showa era movies are aimed more towards kids. Especially as the series goes along. Although, I think the last movie in that era, Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975), is actually up there with the first film (it also has Godzilla's best entrance). There are some good Godzilla movies in the Heisei and Millenium eras, too. I grew up in a time and place where they showed a lot of kaiju movies on TV. I remember watching Gamera on Saturday mornings. They are truly horrible. But, the movies that came out in the Heisei era are miles above the originals. One more kaiju that's less known outside of Japan, Daimajin. There's a trilogy of movies. They are kind of interchangeable but it's generally acknowledged that the second one's the best.

I was so immersed especially with the Jaegers, how cool they look, their design and weapons. It's visual effects are just amazing. There are scenes that just make me feel like I'm actually in it, such as when Striker approaches the Kaiju in Sydney and delivering the punches; as well as when Gipsy walks overhead of the camera in the street in Hong Kong searching for Otachi Kaiju. The effects just make it feel like I'm actually one of the people on the rooftop watching the fight or standing in the street and filming a real big robot walking over me. back again and to add a bit of background. Yes Striker was the only other pilot to ever solo fight a Kaiju. Specifically it was during the Tokyo attack by the Kaiju Onibaba. Strikers co-pilot was knocked out and Striker had to finish the fight. I cant remember where but it was a back and forth between Oni and Coyote Tango, the Jaeger he piloted, and not the normal 10 to 20 minute knock out fight. From what I heard, could be misremembering, it was a 7 HOUR back and forth battle, and thats just the time Striker had to solo pilot Coyote.

Mexican Jaeguer, Matador Fury (Daniel Muñez and Santiago La Cruz): was launched on January 9, 2017 as the first unit in the mark III line of jaegers. She was stationed at the Lima Shatterdome along with Diablo Intercept and Solar Prophet. Designed as the first and last jaeger with a nuclear ejection system, Matador Fury could technically still incinerate kaiju, even if her reactor was breached and due to the danger of this rather "explosive" system and politicians twiddling their thumbs, plus a hefty amount of bureaucracy, Matador was to be only deployed in remote areas, intercepting kaiju in an "early-engagement." This led to both pilots being separated from their fellow Lima Shatterdome colleagues and giving Matador an almost "mysterious" persona for a jaeger. Surprisingly Matador managed to rack up an impressive kill count of five kaiju, four being solo missions before her destruction in early 2024.

The reason chuck hansen hates Riley so much isn’t that he disobeyed orders, it’s that he quit. He blames Riley’s loss and subsequent self-banishment as the reason all the other jaegers started to lose.
