Is this the worst Bond movie? What's worse??
@TACII25

I still enjoy it. I found Spectre a little more disappointing than it.
@panvlk

I think it's one of the underrated Bond films that will age very well. It was disappointing after a fantastic Casino Royale, but looking back at it, the plot made sense, it was fairly realistic and it's a functional movie compared to Skyfall and Spectre. Those two are flashy and cool looking, but almost nothing in them makes any sense. I think Quantum is my second favorite Bond movie in Craig era after Casino, despite not liking it much when it came out.

"Worse" is a relative term.... "Man with The Golden Gun" and "Moonraker" are pretty bad in the sense of failing at being exciting, cool, escapist action movies, but they are some classic *so bad it's good* movies that are some of the most *entertaining* bad movies you'll ever see. But, fair warning "SPECTRE" is worse than this one. (And not entertaining-bad, just dissapointing) And then Pierce Brosnan's run started so strong ("Goldeneye" is one of the best, by the director of "Casino Royale") but declined so fast - "Die Another Day" is cringingly, stab-your-eyeballs-with-forks bad.

Saw some behind the scenes footage - Daniel really dedicated himself physically to that movie. Jumping from roof to balcony during the foot chase in the beggining - he really did such stuff. No wonder he later seriously injured himself on Specter. Some people dont like him as Bond, but he gave himself 120% to that role.

Many people compare this second part of Bond with Mission Impossible 2, in the sense that they are films that do not have a very developed script, but there is no doubt that, like MI-2, the best of these 2 films is their non-stop action, that's why I value them a lot. Despite the hate they received.

Writers Strike in 2007-2008 is what happened to this movie.
@reflectionist
@reflectionist Год назад
It's definitely a unique James Bond movie. And given the circumstances surrounding its production, with the writer's strike... I definitely give it a pass. It's exactly like James said there at the opening, it's a John Wick-style revenge plot with a pissed-off and unhinged Bond on a path of vengeance for Vesper and doesn't care who gets in his way. It's like cleaning up the side-quests in an area before moving to the next one. I can dig it. It's a side-quest.
@ben8692
@ben8692 Год назад
I find this take really interesting. I'd say the movie is definitely about revenge and bonds relationship to it but most of the movie is about him avoiding vengeance and ignoring revenge. Everyone else in the movie including the audience thinks he's out for revenge. He's just trying to move on. He only goes for revenge once his task is completed at the end of the movie when he learns how vespers death was linked to Quantum.
@reflectionist
@reflectionist Год назад
 @Ben - I mean, I thought that the end scene was the completion of the arc of Bond being "unhinged". He had some personal growth, symbolized by the fact that he didn't kill *that* guy. That was him acting without vengeance. Quantum of Solace picks up minutes after the end of Casino Royale, that wound is still fresh. M's like, "You look like shit, have you slept?" And he pockets that picture of the dude while M isn't looking, because he's going after him, sanctioned or not. On the boat with Mathis -- drinking the "Vesper" -- and even Mathis is like, "You alright? Want some pills to help you sleep? Pills to help you forget?" You're right, he's not nearly as unhinged as everybody else in the movie seems to think, he just doesn't have the time to explain it.
@ben8692
@ben8692 Год назад
@@reflectionist yeah definitely. He had personal growth at the end on the movie by not killing the one guy who brought him all the pain surrounding vesper but I disagree about the end of his vengeance. I don't think he ever was acting out of vengeance. He was definitely a force of nature. He says in the hotel he was motivated by his duty. Although M initially disagreed with him she quickly realized he wasn't lying. He was just determined to carry out his duty even if the CIA and the secretary were against it. I think at the beginning him pocketing the picture and swigging his drink was him taking a first step to move on from her. He never uses that picture to figure out where the boyfriend was. He gets that information at the end of the movie from Greene. There are some subtle hints like you say to him not sleeping properly, but I don't think that's a sign he's trying to figure out revenge. Just that he's struggling to move on and do his job.

The Quantum storyline is brilliant. It's a shame they abandoned it for all effects and purposes. Quantum of Solace is a very strange film: some of it brilliant, some of it a mess. Despite the film having issues, it remains my second favourite behind Casino Royale. Skyfall is great as well. But I mean when you get to Spectre it's just atrocious. And I thought the last one was rubbish as well. None of them, after Quantum of Solace have that gravitas.
@pranavnnair5
@pranavnnair5 Год назад
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks Spectre and No Time To Die were both trash. People defend No Time To Die, but I don't get its appeal. It feels so removed from the rest of Daniel Craig's Bond run and feels like such a generic spy movie. I was never invested in his relationship with Madeleine or his daughter and I certainly didn't appreciate him just giving up and dying at the end of the movie.

I've grown to like QOS more and more over the years, after many viewings. Much of the editing is horrendous, yet there are some thrilling action sequences that are well done (the cargo plane, the really nasty fight in the hotel room). Bond's touchy relationship with M reaches a stunning resolution here ("He's my agent and I trust him") when M realizes that, all along, Bond is the only person around her who is actually trying to do the right thing rather than acting out of self-interest. I also like the Mathis scenes. The epilogue following the fiery finale, with Bond coldly confronting the agent who had deceived Vesper, is pure, classic spy stuff. And so, after much consideration, I now feel that this film's good points far outweight the bad ones.
@ben8692
@ben8692 Год назад
Same. I appreciate some of his others are better. But this film has a texture to it that really makes him feel like a real life presence. It's of it's time for sure after bourne/taken but that gritty lived in atmosphere doesn't really feel the same in any of the other films. It also frustrates me so many people say this is bonds revenge for vesper. The story is about revenge, including James relationship to it. But he's not actually seeking it, just trying to get on with his job and move on. You're so right when M finally realized that in the hotel and a nice through line to the end of Skyfall when she says she did get one thing right. So many people think it's just him going rouge for revenge.

This is not a bad Bond film. It was poorly edited into a pace where you can’t see what’s happening for the first 3rd of the film, and there was a writer’s strike that effected the script, both problems of which arose later into production. The editing was handed over to a second party part way through, and they botched it well. The story isn’t exceptional, but it has plenty of the Bond elements that it’s a fitting film for the character. But it’s not terrible, though still heavily flawed.

The visuals still feel on point. Well shot for every scene. Storywise, you can still keep with it. Sticking to the course for the era that it's set in. I’m begging people who shoot straight for “worst” to watch more movies. This movie is dragged by: 1) an objectively bad opening action sequence; 2) the misfortune of being placed between the two best Craig movies. That’s it. Aside from that, it’s a perfectly fine little movie. Not even the worst Craig bond, and maybe only cracking the bottom ten on a bad day. The villain only gets more relevant by the day and I love that he’s just a little weasel who is no physical threat to bond. I like a mostly platonic Bond girl who is largely in her own movie. And I love M in this. And maybe the hottest of hot takes: this is tied for Skyfall with me in terms of menswear. You got that Tom Ford cardigan and sunglasses combo, the Y-3 jacket and chukka boots combo… my mans had the DRIP.

That is a real race in Italy. It's called the Palio di Siena. It's a very crazy horserace in Siena held twice a year. 10 competitors, 1 from each district of the city. Theres a draw to choose the order each competitor chooses the horse he uses. Having the best horse is a big advantage. Theres no saddle, and the course is in the city Palaza with sharp corners that competitor's crash into often. It's a super dangerous race where the competitor's and horses regularly get injured. The winner gets bragging rights for their district and its not uncommon for the lovers of the race to get dragged from the horse and beaten by the districts population.

Something that people tend to not realize when they talk about how this film is bad is that this film is basically the 2nd part of Casino. Bond is pissed at Vesper and his rage is blinding him to the collateral damage he's causing (Agent Fields, Mathas). Greene basically gave him a focus for that rage. I feel this film is underrated (also Greene's plan is RIGHT from the news at that time)

This is an underrated Bond film. It deals realistically with how someone, in this case Bond, deals with his loss. People don't like it because they're naive and ignorant about the human psyche but it's a necessary step in his life. If no one has noticed, all the Craig Bonds are sequential to show his life/growth. So it's a link in the chain necessary to watch what he becomes. And it's well made.

Man I would love to see a re-edited version of the opening car chase. I have a feeling it's one of the best car chases put to screen in the last decade, but I can only take a guess at that because the editing is ridiculous. I don't mind the quick-cut style when it's done right. But this was "Jump the Fence" levels of overkill in the editing room. I watch a lot of action films, and this was the first time I felt like my senses actually became overwhelmed. I think at a certain point I ceased to be able to process what I was looking at, so I was kind of blankly looking at visual noise happening on the screen. Having to sit 4-5 rows from the front of the theater because I was late getting there didn't exactly help matters either.

"Every Car is a Pinto" is more or less a dead trope at this point. A while back I was jarred by a relatively low-speed collision in a cop show from the 80s resulting in the obligatory fireball. It's become so uncommon that I had forgotten it used to be the rule rather than the exception.

If I had to give a list of essential Bond viewing I’d say: Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy, Licence to Kill, Goldeneye. Since you guys said one per Bond actor.

I don't mean any disrespect whatsoever, nor am I attempting to diminish Craig’s Bond movies. With that said, although my age and the time I grew up play somewhat of a role in this, as far as nostalgia is concerned *[I’ll be 35 in October-I gagged a bit saying that 💀],* Pierce Brosnan’s 007 films will always be the epitome of Bond films to me for various reasons outside of those nostalgic feels. I mean, hell, the memories of my older brother and I playing 007 on the Nintendo 64 are and will likely forever be engrained in the “feel-good corner” of my mind, lol. I *highly* recommend that you guys watch Brosnan’s series of 007/Bond films after you complete Craig’s. There is merely something so special about Pierce’s adaptation of Bond, which is ultimately a “must-see,” without a doubt.

I see that many have a problem with fast editing in movies, perhaps because they are young, they are not used to this style of editing, because nowadays it is not used so much anymore, I am older, I was 20 years old in the 90s, where I saw many movies with this type of fast editing and I'm very used to it, it doesn't represent a problem for me, examples of movies like: FACE OFF, THE ROCK, SPEED, ARMAGEDDON, FAIR GAME, DAYS of THUNDER, ENEMY OF THE STATE, CLIFFHANGER, CON AIR, etc., all these films have that style of fast editing, which is not bad, for me it is understood what is seen despite how fast, it is a style, I understand that many young people today do not like it, because is no longer used, but I don't see it as a bad resource, quick editing gives a lot of rhythm and adrenaline to an action scene, it's a matter of getting used to it and you'll see that you're going to enjoy it a lot.

The opening action is amazing, but it quickly loses its way and seems rushed. Although it's not terrible, the overall impression is one of disappointment. The overall quality of the film is ordinary, despite a few standout moments here and there.

The story might have been a bit much to fit into a single film. Some movies are like that, like "Avengers: Age of Ultron," which really needed the two part treatment. I'm not saying that Quantum needed to be two films, but they felt obligated to spend so much time on action that it might have hurt the story ... even though the action was well done.

know this the Bourne films were starting up around this time and there was a bit of ping pong back and forth influence going on between the two production teams -- one-upmanship in the physical/stunts etc. whereas the Tom Cruise MI franchise wasn't considered to be the rival... again, no CGI used in CR or QofS - all the stunts and explosions were very very real

Bond themes are a genre unto themselves. It's customarily a big deal to be asked to write one, and big business, high profile traditionally. Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die still gets radio play on contemporary Classic Rock stations. And Carly Simon's Nobody Does It Better is a perennial soft rock favorite. Nancy Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Madonna, Sheena Easton, Billie Eilish, Tom Jones. Really varied styles over the generations, most created specifically for the accompanying movie. I think the film industry is the ultimate collaborative art form. (3D/VR soon.)

He saw her with Greene and so by saving her he can get in with her and get information on Greene. It wasn't a side mission so much as a pre-requisite quest to the main quest.} Greene and the rest of the organization know that everyone is going to assume what they want and found in the Bolivian dessert is oil. They encourage that thinking. It gives them power to negotiate and room to maneuver what they are really doing. It's poker. It's a bluff that you let the other side think they know about. It's not a horrible movie... but it's not as tight and good as it could have been. I think the writers quit or something just before finishing the writing. Regardless, they did what they could with it and it turned out okay. It has some solid ideas and deals with some cool things in world geopolitics. But they get back on track going forward.

The making of this movie was a shitshow. There was a 7 month long writers strike. Daniel Craig was injured 3 times during filming. Given 1/3 of editing time that was needed. The action scenes took longer than anticipated, blowing the budget.
