The movie definitely falls short in establishing the importance of Madeline and Blofeldt, but the whole point with Madeline was that she always existed on the fringe of the spy world because of her father’s work as an assassin and for Spectre. She was never a “pacifist,” but she refused to be a part of her father’s world, and by extension Bond’s world. That’s also why she tried to walk away toward the end of the movie, she didn’t want to be a part of Bond’s world of espionage and murder, hence the symbolism of Bond refusing to kill Blofeldt and leaving with her. Don’t forget, Bond tried to leave MI-6 at the end of Casino Royale, it was only Vesper’s betrayal and subsequent murder that pushed him back. Madeline is his way out, but again the movie didn’t do a great job of portraying all of this.

To answer your question about the books: These five movies reference them extensively. Casino Royale is a very decent modern adaptation of the actual Fleming novel; and it would make a great introduction for you to the literary world of Bond/Ian Fleming,as you could enjoy spotting all the similarities and differences to the movie. The other four Craig films take bits and pieces from Fleming,but are very much their own thing. For example,the whole backstory of Bond and his childhood is revealed in Flemings novel "You Only Live Twice" and his novella "Octopussy". The literary Bond is generally a little more sensitive than Craig's Bond - but otherwise very similar. If you were to tackle the novels (and you seem quite keen to do so),I'd personally recommend Casino Royale (the first Bond novel); For Your Eyes Only (an anthology of Bond short stories - ideal,if you just want an interesting quick fix!);Thunderball; OHMSS; You Only Live Twice (a linked trilogy telling a developing story); and The Man with the Golden Gun (which ties up the remaining loose ends). Have fun!!

My favorite from the Craig saga, the last one: No Time To Die, because it is a tribute to the old movies in the saga, we have that Bond from the Connery era again with his old Aston Martin full of gadgets, the villain he wants destroy humanity, the island where the villain lives and where he carries out his plan, and many other things. If we add to that Hans Zimmer in the music, the cocktail is very tasty.

Fun fact: Radiohead were originally going to provide the title song but were dropped after writing the song in favour of Sam Smith's "Writing's On The Wall". The producers claimed the song arrived too late to use. The Radiohead song is simply called "Spectre" and can be found on their album "A Moon Shaped Pool"

In fairness, Bond also falls in love with Tracy in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, who doesn't appear within this timeline. So, Madeline is basically the Tracy of this timeline. That's why I would have recommended watching that film prior to the Craig films. No Time to Die references that film heavily also. For what it's worth, I had issues with the Bond/Madeline relationship in this film, but find it to be far more believable in No Time to Die.
@kojiattwood

The whole scenario of Blofeld being Bond's "brother" is far more convoluted than the Bond/Madeline love story, to be honest.

Despite Skyfall (2012) being shot entirely on digital, and rumors that James Bond movies would be shot digitally from then on, this and No Time to Die (2021) were shot on 35mm film.

Then ruined it by adding a yellow tint to Spectre in post-production. If you look at the Mexico scenes especially in a side by side comparison of the yellow tint version against a colour-corrected version the colour-corrected version looks so much better

Seriously, Skyfall is good, but I'm not very convinced by the image, it looks very digital, not very intense colors, Specter looks very dark at times, faded colors, and if you compare it to No Time To Die, which was filmed with cameras 35mm film roll, the image of the film looks beautiful, it looks great, I love the image of No Time To Die.

Okay, so in terms of lore: Spectre is an organization that appears in 3 of the James Bond books and numerous films, in almost all of the 60s films to be exact. It's a large, international criminal organization that deals in corruption, terrorism, extortion, etc. In fact the letters in Spectre stand for "Special executive for counter intelligence, terrorism, revenge and extortion". Ernst Stavro Blofeld is the leader of that organization and largely considered Bond's biggest nemesis, both in the books and early films. He's a criminal mastermind who frequently changes up his appearance so as not to be recognized, but is vaguely European. And no, he's definitely not Bond's brother, at least not traditionally. They added that backstory for this movie and it's pretty dumb, if you ask me...anyway, if you watch the older Bond movies, you'll see more of Spectre and Blofeld.

Since this movie does not use an original Ian Fleming story title, there are still only four unused original titles remaining: "The Property of a Lady", "The Hildebrand Rarity", "Risico", and "007 in New York" ("Agent 007 in New York"). The word "Hildebrand" does appear in the name of the closed "rarities" shop and safe house in this movie.

S.P.E.C.T.R.E., in the earlier James Bond movies, stood for Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion. S.P.E.C.T.R.E. has also been known as the Special Executor for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion. James Bond creator Ian Fleming originally had the acronym meaning slightly more simply, the Special Executive for Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion.

41:00 The largest explosion in movie history. It's miniature behind them, it is practical, it is in shot, that is not composited in. And the explosion is real. It was shot in 1 take. And it's a big one. "Once we land, what's the plan?!" This is James Bond... there is no plan. To quote Mission Impossible: "Hope is NOT a plan!" "You're new here." If nine eyes sounds scary, you should know that Five Eyes is an actual real thing. Intelligence sharing between 5 world powers. It's not as nefarious in its deep reach as nine eyes is portrayed, but still.

This installment was cool for how much Bond's world was changing. The connection of these films and what threats await do become challenging. Sam Mendes did a great job and was the 2nd director in this series to make back to back films. The artistic liberties taken with the practical-ness of this have great ideas. Keeping things interesting through Interwoven storytelling in a classic genre. I never thought we'd see the faction of SPECTRE again on screen. This was the arch-nemesis of Bond and M16 in the original novels and first films. Christoph Waltz as the leader, Blofeld and Batista as his main muscle, Hinx was perfect. Even Blofeld's pet cat is a staple (wasn't expecting to see that again). actress/model Monica Bellucci (Lucia) was the oldest Bond girl ever. Age 50 at the time and without a doubt, infinitely gorgeous as always. Lea Seydoux as Madeline (M:I-4 Ghost Protocol, Blue Is The Warmest Color), the only girl in his life. That is a very rare kind of role and hasn't happened in the series since the late 1960s. The Bond theme by Sam Smith is wonderful and deserves every award it won. This was almost the final Bond film for Craig. He was looking to not play the role for a long time. Glad he did one more. But if this was the last, i wouldn't be disappointed.

Many of us think that the chemistry between Bond and Madeleine is too cold in this movie, to believe that she is the new love of his life, but the relationship and chemistry improve a lot in No Time To Die, it is at least more credible, the actress is more adult in the last movie, since it was filmed a few years after Sepectre and she looks more adult, and more predisposed to go deeper into her character, the relationship between them works better for me in No time to die than in Spectre, and because the The central plot revolves more around her character and what has happened to her in the past when she was a little girl.

This is IMO THE best one of the Craig-Era - Yes it has more "humor" in it, but I think that the best Bond movies do. (Well my favourite Bond was Connery years ago but as I now it's Moore (and Brosnan) just because of the silly/humor factor. If the Bond movies are too "serious" they don't work because the whole thing is so un-realistic and silly.) The Opening in Mexico City is as cool as that fantastic City, it makes me want to return there (it's cold & dark in Sweden now). The opening credits are on a higher artistic level.

Your take on Bond in this movie and the arc is directly affected by your lack of exposure to earlier Bond films and to some extent Bond novels. Vesper Lynde was not Bond's one and only love. His greatest love was named Traci and her and Madeline's arc are very much the same. Bond married Traci. You Only Live Twice reveals Blofeld and Spectre. On Her Majesty's Secret Service connects Traci, Blofeld and Spectre not dissimilarly to the arcs in this film.

craig's movies has such a visible development. when we watch casino royale aside from the name of the protagonist, there arent much reasons for us to believe it was a bond movie. it could be just any spy movie. but with each sequal it slowly but surely, captured the atmosphere of bondverse more and more. in quantum of solace the scene that we saw agent fields corpse was the first sign of how this movies are about to shift from any spy movie to *the* spy movie. and him wearing a tuxedo while covered in dirt and wound was almost like the movie's telling us how the old ''gentlemen spy'' idea has risen from its grave in skyfall we got moneypenny, Q, superspy car and a villain that prefers to toy with him instead of killing him immediately in spectre we also gor them but the cycle got even wider with gadgets and secret evil organization. people didnt like it but spectre was one of(if not) the bondest bond movie in craig's era. it captured the essence the most

You should watch the Mission Impossible movie, the Dubai one. Lea Seydoux shoots the guy in the balls, and that's what made them get her in the Bond movie.

I still personally think that the one thing Spectre needed to make the Madeleine and James relationship work was to have brought Eva Green back to be Vesper and after showing Mr. Whites tape with Bond, to show Vesper making the deal to give them the money to spare James. I think it would have been guy wrenching and it would have let Madeleine understand James internally better. To know what happened.

Low key, after No Time to Die, I want you guys to react to Austin Powers trilogy, bc it’s just a big spoof of James Bond tropes. 😂 They lean into the classic Bond a lot in Spectre but I still like Daniel’s version better bc it has more grit. Daniel Craig is my Bond forever!

Also on the idea of Vesper vs Madeleine I’d say Vespers better for one major reason. To quote M “She knew you were you” Vesper knew Bond in a way that few others would. That’s why she left her phone with Mr. Whites number. Madeleine never could do something like that.

Blofeld first appears when Sean Connery played Bond. Moneypenny appeared in the first film (Dr. No.) and many, many subsequent films (in fact probably all of them). The Daniel Craig Bond films are a kind of re-boot to the franchise.

The Craig series does take a lot from the book lore, but Bond and Blofeld (who becomes Bond’s arch-nemesis in the later Fleming novels) did not have any precious relationship in the books. Most fans hated it because it strays from the standard lore but it really didn’t bother me that much, because this particular series of five films is it’s own self-contained story. If you had asked me before this came out who the perfect actor to play Blofeld was, Christoph Waltz probably would have been on my shortlist. Unfortunately he’s a bit underwritten in this film, no fault of Waltz’s. I’ve heard some fans say that Dave Bautista may have actually been a great Blofeld and I actually can’t disagree with that. He probably wouldn’t have been to different than Telly Savalas’ version of the character in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, who was also a mastermind but also a large and intimidating physical presence who wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.
@syleshwhycantileavethisbla802
I've seen all the Bond movies, and while Spectre may not be the WORST, it's probably the most frustrating because it's supposed to be part of a bigger story, and it doesn't fit. It makes the things that came before worse (undermining the evil group they spent the first two movies setting up, tries to tie in Silva and his very personal and unrelated mission from the last movie), and it also leaves a situation that the NEXT movie has to awkwardly navigate.

I totally agree with you about Madeline. Lea Seydoux (sp?) is lovely and a good actress, but the love story with her character didn’t gel for me. In my opinion Bond and Monica Bellucci’s character, Lucia Sciarra, have much stronger chemistry, and I think their characters would’ve made a stronger love story.

this bond series takes more from the previous films and makes it a more serious action film series. like Spectre is an organization from the more Silly bond films, Casino Royale is the name of an old spoof Bond film, Agent 009 is an agent from the movie Octopussy where Pierce Brosnan was Bond

I think it's a bit unfair to characterize Madeleine as "a pacifist, but not a pacifist". She merely said that she didn't like guns, because of her fathers history. Bond assumed that that meant she couldn't handle herself, but quickly found out that she could. Just meant that she doesn't like guns. My problem with their romance is much more so that they just get too close too quickly. I actually quite like her character, but the romance between them didn't work for me.

I knew y'all would have issues with this movie lol. I never liked it much overall. And I never liked the character or actress they had be Bond's sudden love interest. She just seemed to be around without a good storyline. Btw- this actress was in MI:4 - Ghost Protocol as the bad agent who killed Josh Hathaway's character near the train station. Anyways, the only thing I did like about this movie was some of the stunts. And it again gosh made me cringe when Bond ditched that gorgeous liquid silver AM. I only saw TTD once and for me was disappointing like this movie was. 😞
