I LOVE the fact that the Kiss didn't work. That "True Love" isn't a destined 'The One' automatic perfect match, that you can still screw up your relationship with your True Love, it's something you have to make work.

This movie is so underrated. I love all the twisted parallels to the original, the villain is great, and I appreciate them going for a more dramatic tone. I consider this a near perfect conclusion to the franchise.

the action sequences the best in the franchise and the villain is quite a real deal but my favorite thing about this movie is the whole satire about ''post happily ever after'' idea this movie has. shrek franchise is all about taking the stereotipical fairy tale tropes and wiping its ass with it. and this one did it justice, by introducing us the hard hitting reality of what happens after the hero defeats the villain, gets the girl, gets the love he didnt have before and gets his happy ending. which is being a parent of three and having no me-time at all... bloody brilliant. with that being said. i think jokes were weakest in all 4. best thing about shrek's jokes are, they are like a fine vine. they gets better in time, and in every watch you get things you couldnt get before when you where younger. but this one was lacking that. its an overall a good movie, but more importantly a good shrek movie to give the franchise the closure it deserves.

The Pied Piper is, unequivocally, my favourite interpretation of a fairy-tale or folklore character adapted into the _Shrek_ series, as it seems no stretch of the imagination that he would be a ruthless bounty hunter in this iteration. In the original German legend, the Pied Piper of Hamelin - _die Rattenfänger von Hameln_ ("The Rat-Catcher of Hamelin") - was hired to lure away a mischief of rats from the town of Hameln, which he accomplished using his magical instrument; but, when he was denied payment, the Piper took his revenge by using those same powers to goad the children of Hameln away, like he did with the rats. Versions vary, with some telling us that the Piper compelled the rats to drown themselves in the Weser River, and, in another, did the same with the children of Hameln to punish their parents. Hence a variant of the idiom "to pay the piper" (to pay a debt or face the dire consequences). The cherry on top of the _Shrek_ incarnation of the Pied Piper is the fact that he was "voiced" (flute scores and the sound of him wetting his lips) by the late Jeremy Steig, who was the son of author William Steig who inadvertently started the whole franchise with his picture book _Shrek!_ (1991). As always, it's a joy to watch films anew again from your perspective!

I love how Rumplestiltskin is a combination of all 3 villains from the past movies. He’s a short, vain, magical dictator but he’s so unique as a character you don’t notice. That’s good writing and filmmaking, the kind that catapults it into the masterpiece category.

He is so annoying at times. I don't unserstand what's so unique about it and it is quite obviouse he has charackteristics of the first three villains. But maybe I am biase since Rumpelstiltskin ( and coparable charakters) in the Fairtales was never the most convincing villain eventhough he wanted a child in exchange of his service).

@@whitenoisereacts If you remember the third movie, when Charming was giving his speech to the villains, there's a Rumpelstiltskin that looks nothing like this one but was more accurate to the fairytale because he did want a son. That, coupled with the fact that this Rumpelstiltskin needs to use magic contracts which the one form the fairytale didn't need, leads to some believing this Rumpelstiltskin is actually an impostor using the fame of the other one to scam people like he does with the King and Queen in the movie. While others just write it off as the writers quietly trying to ignore the events of the third movie I personally prefer the theory, since it further enhances the deviousness and cunning of this villain.

The woman (young wife of a king) was actually in danger of loosing her heat if she didn't manage to trun straw into gold on a spinning wheel and it was not just a bundle of straw but three rooms of it. The most iconic scene from the fairtale is someone seeing Rumpelstskin dancing around afigher singing "Today I bake, tomorrow I brew, The day after tomorrow I get me the queen's child. How good it is that no one knows my name is Rumpelstiltskin." His end is quite gruesom too: He is tearing himself appart in anger when the queen tells him his name.

1. The opening of this movie is basically like a representation of what the franchise became after Shrek the Third: loud , obnoxious and kinda gross And Shrek wanting to go back to a simpler time kind of reflects the fanbase's own thoughts on the series 2. I love the reversal of Shrek wanting to be Donkey's friend and Donkey avoiding him. With him coming back and becoming his friend once he sees Shrek cry ,something he *never* does before or after btw. It really shows that, as annoying Donkey can be, his friendship with Shrek is genuine and pure in any timeline 3. 32:50 this scene is this movie's crowning achievement in my opinion. Because keep in mind who's saying what here: Shrek is trying to convince Fiona that true love exists. The same Shrek who laughed at it in the first movie and didn't think he deserved it in the second one. Meanwhile, Fiona, a fervent believer in it is incapable of accepting it ,as it failed her in this timeline. She lost hope. And when Fiona ultimately asks him where he was ,why he didn't save her her he can't answer. Because its *HIS* fault she and the rest of the cast go through this Mad Max style hell 4. Rumplestilskin may not have the charm or the witty menace of the Fairy Godmother, but there's something so wonderfull about a villaim who not only knows they're evil, but are pretty blatant about it when they have the upper hand. He's this slimy little twerp who really only has as much power as other people give him. He literally didn't *earn* anything he has and he's never satisfied. He literally *rules* the alternate timeline and he *still* makes deals with people that screw them over, just so he can take what little they still have. 5. Overall, this movie was a fantastic lookback at the franchise as a whole and a great ending to Shrek's story 6. You guys HAVE TO watch Puss in Boots. Its technically in the same universe, but its completely self contained

I thought this was a major improvement over the third one. This has very excellent humor and the movie works well as a fantasy adventure. The romance in this movie is absolutely amazing and it's definitely the biggest strength of the film. It can also get a little emotional at times. This film definitely reminded me why Shrek was such a great film. Even though that there is a Shrek 5 in development, this was still a great ending for the franchise.

Fun fact: The voice of Rumpelstiltskin, Walt Dohl, was playing around with voices until he got to the raspy weasel voice we know and love! Another one: The once seedy Poison Apple is where the party was! I love that because it shows way too much has changed and transformed into something entirely different...love the details...

Fun fact Walt Dorn did the voice of Rumplestilskin he’s a writer and staff member for the series and Dreamworks, he did the voice in the table reads and script reads but everyone thought it was so perfect that they chose him to be the official voice of Rumple for the film Cookiee is voiced by Craig Robinson, the lead female ogre is Jane Lynch, and the main male ogre is Jon Ham

This is my second favorite of the Shrek franchise. I genuinely love it and can't count how many times I've watched. It's just so emotional, and I love how much focus they gave to Fiona. It's easy to forget how traumatizing it must've been to her. Trapped in a tower since she was a kid, all alone, with a terrifying dragon outside, going through a rough transformation every night and waiting for someone to take you out of your misery. The part where Shrek mentions that she sleeps with lights on because she's scared of waking up back in the tower? That's just heartbreaking, and it adds to the cruelty of Shrek's words to her at the start of the film, and to how precious that "tedious everyday life" was to her. It's a gem, I love this movie with all of my heart ♡

Fun fact, originally the main male Ogre in Fiona's resistance was supposed to be this reality version of Charming, having been cursed too at some point in the story (which would track since in this reality with no Shrek it's probably that Rumpelstiltskin was the one to get rid of the Fairy Godmother since she wouldn't have just done nothing when he took over) and that's why he's relatively better looking than the other ogres, but at some point in development the idea got dropped and he became his own character instead.

I for one thought that this fourth Shrek film was an improvement from the third. The story felt more engaging from the premise of Shrek experiencing life in a different way because of the deal he made with Rumple. The ending felt very satisfying as we see Shrek appreciating what he has, his family, friends, etc. Again, great improvement, and another fun Shrek film overall.

I put my Dad and my sister on to this one a few years back. I was so glad they watched it as they didn't know anything about the premise and they loved all the call backs to the first and second film but they found the dark contrast so interesting. I love Warrior Princess Fiona! Honestly wish she kept her look in their normal reality as I love her hair like that.

I’m going to request in the Dreamworks realm… -Spirit stallion of the Cimmeron -Joseph king of dreams -Prince of Egypt Two of them are religion based but they aren’t “preachy”. All three of these movies are the pinocle of Dreamworks music supremacy over anything Disney. And Spirit was and still is my favorite move of all time.

You know, while watching this movie I always wondered why Charming never rescued Fiona since Shrek was never born? And then it hit me, Charming never made it because Dragon killed him, because in Shrek 2 you can see he didn't have to face the Dragon because by then, she was gone with Donkey, Shrek, and Fiona.

But on the other hand they are still taking stereotipical tropes by making "True Love's Kiss" the soluction and having Fiona fall in love with Shrek within a night. Even in the original first movie there journey took them two nights and at least one and a half day.

It's just wild to me that Rumple's voice actor was just one of the other creators filling in as the voice and only remained because everyone loved his take on the character. That character is a huge reason I love this one as much as I do.

This made my day, the 4th one is so epic! 😄😄😄 I feel like it kinda had to happen because the adjustment for Shrek having a wife and kids would have been big enough for him to have lost it for a while and yet realize that he really had it great. Definitely It’s A Wonderful Life themes. 😊

Perfect ending?.. it redeems itself from the 3rd movie, its got alot of the qualities of the 2nd and wraps up character arcs of everyone really well. Yes its a perfect ending.

I know lots of people hate this movie, but I think it might actually be better than the first one! Not the second one, nothing can beat that. The first one is more iconic, but I think this one has a better story and conflict.

The Pied Piper is "voiced" by Jeremy Stieg, the son of William Steig, the author of the original Shrek book. He was a jazz flutist and passed away in 2016 from cancer.

I love how serious this film takes the franchise. Shrek the third really struggled with its tone, so to go for a more grim (or Grimm?) story is a great way to distance itself from that. But still retaining a good amount of humour, Rumplestiltskin being a particular highlight. I'm just really worried that if the alleged Shrek 5 does happen that it'll ruin this fantastic end to the series.

The 4th movie is kinda weird to me in the terms that it makes me feel like they act like the second and third movie doesn’t even exist. We all know that Fiona’s dad already has a deal with the fairy godmother to break Fiona’s curse, so why would he go to Rumpel in this movie? And it’s Fiona and Shrek’s kid’s’ birthday and Arthur is not their? Like Arthur doesn’t even exist in this movie they don’t even mention him. And even Rumpel looks different in this movie than in the third movie. But at the same time Shrek and Donkey’s children are in this so that means the third movie did happened right? But I guess we don’t need the second and third to show that they have kids I mean they are married after all and we don’t need to watch the other 2 movies to understand this one. It almost feels like a reboot.

I adore Wallace Shawn, he can be total evil, totally clueless, or just there for laughs, and he clearly doesn't care which of these roles he is cast in. He is fantastic, and given every interview I've seen with him, he doesn't understand his appeal.

I haven't watched this movie in so long and I completely forgot how good it is. I agree that this was the perfect ending and they shouldn't make more. Rather focus on the spin-offs like Puss in Boots. Also, have y'all watched the Zorro movies with Antonio Banderas yet? Cause I can't find it but I recommend it.

Another amazing reaction! I cannot wait to see your reaction to Puss in Boots! I would say my favorite moment confessing that the best thing about we live in that day phone number for wife again! Another film that I highly recommend that is very similar to Shrek‘s case as well as based on a true story is called The Vow. Another Dreamworks film I recommend is Shark Tale. Also I highly recommend Antonio Banderas’ Zorro films! 📜🖋⏳ 👑💚

If you really think about it, Donkey saved Shrek in that alternate timeline thingy by telling him about that exit clause with the contact
