Eris is to this day one of the best depictions of a godlike entity in animation tbh. She's a trickster that spreads chaos, but the scenes where she straight up bends reality really sells her as this cosmic being of unimaginable power. While *also* acknowledging that there are rules even SHE can't break. Also, there was probably a small team of animators allocated to just animating her hair, let that sink in lol

I love Eris because she isn’t defeated at the end, she is outwitted, but she just shrugs it off at the end, more irritated than anything. She isnt killed, she doesnt face any real repercussions other than her own pride being hurt, and she just goes on to ruin some other kingdom’s day. I also find it interesting that she wasn’t really banking on Sinbad’s “black heart”, she knew Proteus’ had a golden one and would put his life and the future of his land on the line for a wildcard. She was so fun and a perfect example of a trickster god.

That's my favorite aspect of the character. At the end of the day her power vastly outweighs anything mortals could ever hope to achieve and she knows it, but handicaps herself for the chance of fun. And she wasn't even outwitted tbh, Sinbad just accepted his obligation to his best friend, demonstrating she has miscalculated his heartlessness. Power of friendship won XD

I’d even argue that she got what she wanted. Her goal wasn’t necessarily to destroy the ten cities or kill Proteus, it was to sow a little chaos and observe Sinbad’s reactions to the situation she put him in. True, the end result wasn’t what she expected and she had to pay up, but that doesn’t change the fact that she was entertained. That was her goal at the end of the day.

Unfortunately, this was the last time DreamWorks has made a 2D animated film due to this bombing at the box office. In fact, it is sad that all my favorite films from when I was a kid like this, El Dorado, Atlantis, The Iron Giant, and Treasure Planet, all flopped.
@EChacon

Yes and No for Atlantis, yes it underperformed at the Box Office but Disney hardly acknowledge Atlantis as a "Box-Office Flop" when the ONLY flops that Disney Animation had were The Black Cauldron, Treasure Planet, Home on the Range and Strange World.

If I were to describe the animation of Eris in one phrase it would be 'underwater smoke'. That and the creativity when it comes to her actions are just great. Her 'Sinbad Suit' could have been done with just the 'walk behind pillar', but we get this 'summon puppet and possess' that is just brilliant.

Eris is seriously the best villain I’ve ever seen in a animated movie.. she has no motive other than her pure want for chaos.. and the animation is what started my journey into studying it! She’s so beautifully animated and it works so well for her.. the only bad things about the movie are the cgi being bad in places, and unfortunately it feels like the ending was rushed.. but Eris will forever be in my mind as best villain

the tales of Sinbad are from the One Thousand and One Nights but the movie takes a lot from greek mythology, like Eris, Tartarus, and the sirens, to name the first ones that come to mind. the voyage itself in the film references a few of Sinbad's travels though, mainly the coming to an "island" that turns out to actually be a gigantic animal and the coming to an island with a bird way larger than any bird has any right to be (you can tell Sinbad in the tales didn't have the best luck when it came to exploring islands lmao)

Even though Sinbad didn’t do very well at the box office, I still give credit to Dreamworks for doing their best with another 2D animated feature film. My favorite part of this film is Eris, pretty much the same opinion I have with Disney’s Hercules’ character, Hades. Just the way she is animated so fluidly, it’s a real spectacle. Not to mention Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance and the character’s theme music, which are also great.

i like the way Nobu puts it talking about Sinbad needing "coaxing" to Be Good! to me it really feels like everyone has good and bad in them to different degrees and then Sinbad comes off as the type of person who would let the bad in him "win" if it weren´t for the people around him/the things happening around him- and that goes for something "simple" like his crew coaxing him to apologize to Marina but also for the whole mess with Eris, cause you do wonder if Sinbad would've stayed around long enough to change if she hadn't forcibly tied him to the plot. tbh it's just really well executed, the MC who isn't all that inclined to be good and doesn't feel like The Hero but still find his way to being heroic
@DovahkiinMaster172
@DovahkiinMaster172 Год назад
I love Eris as a villain for multiple reasons, as a goddess her power is unimaginable and yet her plans and motivations are so simplistic as well. I love the way she moves and how Tarturus reflects that. I love she isn’t defeated by conventional means, she had to outsmarted and she recognized her loss and went away. It’s a perfect way to bring a goddess down.

The friendship of Sinbad and Proteus seem to be based on the story of Damon and Pythias. I don't remember the story exactly or if one was a prince and the other a thief but I remember they were loyal friends to each other and one (Pythias i think) was also sentenced for execution. This Pythias asked to go home to settle his affairs for when he dies but was (unsurprisingly) refused so his best friend, Damon(?), offered himself as hostage and accepted to be executed in Pythias' stead if he doesn't come back on the day of his execution. Now I may have mixed this story up with another because I can't remember if Pythias was killed by bandits on the road back to the execution site and came back to free his hostage friend as a ghost, or if he came back (alive) in time true to his word to avoid having his best friend executed in his place and the crowd was so touched by the loyalty of their friendship that they asked for both of them to be set free, or if it turned out otherwise, I'd have to google later 😅 In any case, I've never heard of this movie before and I'm surprised because it's actually really awesome and led by a stellar voice cast. Eris is a super intriguing villain and I can't help but kind of root for her. I wonder how many more animated treasures I missed.

About the lore: Sinbad is a character from one of the 1001 nights. Siracuse is actually a city in the island of Sicily, that is now a part of Italy, but back then I think it was independent. Sinbad traveled the Mediterranean up and down, and the lore that surrounds his tales goes from greek to helenic, persian and arabic. Eris, in particular, is a Greek goddess.

Eris has always been one of my favorite characters, and villains as well from DreamWork films, not only because of the design but because of the way she appeared, and her role in this story as this mysterious Goddess of Chaos, who interferes minimally so that the people themselves will spread chaos with the chain reactions that she started.

Movies like Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Hercules, Road to El Dorado and Sinbad were underrated. They truly represent adventure and cool features of 3d+2D effects. The only thing I didn’t like in Sinbad was the cheating element, I can never find that cute. Proteus was too good for all this and Sinbad in no way was a hero but just someone with redeemable quality which I do find fascinating cause it’s not your everyday that you get an protagonist who’s not a good guy. Eris was such an awesome antagonist who indeed is non killable goddess and someone who can actually get away without an harm. She was literally Loki before we were even introduced to Loki. For underrated movies I’d recommend Legend of the guardians: owls of Ga’Hoole, Meet the Robinsons, Epic.

@@theadaptationstationmaster Curious why you don't think Treasure Planet don't fit in the same camp as Sinbad, in terms of being underrated? Treasure Planet's story rings very true for many young people today. The amount of fathers removed from their kids' lives (Mostly because of the mothers incentivized to leave their husbands for money), resulting in broken youths like Jim, who just want/need a father figure in order to course correct. Disney even made the movie flop on purpose, as most can see after just a cursory glance at the circumstances of the movie being made.

I like how great Marina is as a heroine; she is far from what we would consider a Mary Sue nowadays. She's not perfect, and while she's very attractive and feminine, she mostly relies on her wealth and her courage to get what and where she wants. While she saves the whole crew from the sirens, she also has to be rescued a few times, the best example of this being when she gets abducted by the giant snowbird. And just like Sinbad, she's prideful and pig-headed, but she's also very strong, upstanding, and resourceful, not because she's a 💅woman💅 but because of the person she is. As a character, she's very refreshing. Eris is also amazing as a villain. Because she's a goddess, it makes sense that she just wants to mess with the world to relieve her boredom. I simply love the way they animated her and the attitude they gave her. And because of her nature, she has to be outwitted, because Sinbad could never even dream of killing her. Sinbad, Proteus, the crew... Every character is great and refreshing. I love this movie.

I loved this movie as a kid! Still do! We were dirt poor growing up so when we went to Goodwill or a second hand place, we'd buy a bunch of VHS tapes that only cost 50¢ each so we had huge tubs(and I mean the HUGE tubs. Probably wouldn't fit all our VHS collection in 4 of them! Probably need closer to 10 😆) of VHS movies we would watch over and over again and Sinbad was one of them! The only movie I wish I'd found was Treasure Planet because it's my favorite. I still look whenever I go somewhere with VHS tapes or DVDS but still haven't run across it 😕 My younger sister(by a year) had a big crush on Sinbad while we were growing up so it was her favorite movie! She kept it in her room and would practically watch it every night to go to sleep! And she loved dogs so Sinbad was like her ideal type of man, lol 😆 I love the humor in this movie(some jokes I didn't get as a kid but I do now and I love them), I really loved Sinbad and the crew and their relationship and teasing of each other and the betting of what was going to happen to Sinbad, and I love the animation! I miss old school 2D animation so so much! I understand why they do 3D now but I still don't like it as much as the 2D. Maybe because I'm learning 2D animation on my own and really like it and the accomplishment of doing something I thought as a kid was hard and seeing it come together into something but idk. Maybe this is why so many people love anime due to it's 2D look, I know that's why I love it(plus the story and characters) ☺️

Guys, fyi, there is a post credit scene for the movie. It's nothing plot related, but just another little fun 5 minute adventure. Totally agree with your comment about Proteus though. Sinbad is the fun, adventurous, morally ambiguous protagonist, but Proteus is the true, noble hero that everyone should aspire to be.
@Ginna00
@Ginna00 Год назад
proteus is an ancient greek name so as eris, and she is the greek goddess of discord. also, she was the one who made Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite fight off for Pari's choice with the apple as to who is the most beautiful and of course he chose Aphrodite and all that stuff later happened like the 10-year-old war of Troia and with Helen

As for the success (or rather non success) of this movie box office wise - I think this movie suffered both from the fact that animation was struggling to succeed in the early 2000s with all of the experimental technologies coming out at the time, but also that it was released not only the same year but the same MONTH that Pirates of the Caribbean 1 did and unfortunately it just got overshadowed by the other live action swashbuckling fantasy pirate blockbuster.

Woah, i was not expecting you guys to react to this. This movie is incredibly underrated lol. The 3D animation is a little dated, but other than that its gorgeous and very well made

Sinbad is based on the Greek classical tale of the Odyssey. Sinbad was inspired by Odysseus who went on a quest to get back to his island. He faced obstacles such as the cyclops, sirens, witches and etc. Eris is just a make belief character in the movie so her character isn’t based on anyone in the original tale but a lot of people compare her with Circe who was the first witch (not a goddess) Odysseus met during his quest. Circe was one of the most dangerous woman any man could come across according to legend. She was know for manipulation, seducing men, and luring them to their island and holding them hostage. Hope that makes since. Love y’all videos ❤🙂

My older cousin had the DVD, and if I remember well there was a video game feature in it! Like, you could sail in the siren lair and you had to try and go through without your ship breaking apart, using the TV remote. It was fun at first but very frustrating after failing to go through a bunch of times :')

There's the Hot/Crazy scale, and then there's Eris, Goddess of Discourse -and sexual awakenings for many a teen in the 2000s- So Sinbad was primarily a Middle East hero, hailing from Baghdad. But Eris is the Greek Goddess of Discourse (you know the Trojan War, she started that, because she wasn't invited to a wedding by the other gods) among Tartarus and Cetus which are also Greek. Believe it's just your good ol'fashioned Westernization at play there. Then again, Aladdin is originally from China...

Eris was the Ancient Greek Goddess of Chaos and Discord. The Twelve Cities, Thebes, and even Tartarus were Greek(Tartarus being one of three realms of the afterlife in Greek mythology). And Yeah Marina, Proteus and the King are based on Greek history and myth, but Sinbad is a Persian tale. Which isn't too wild that there would be interaction, based on geography, the Persian Empire and the Hellenic Empire shared a sea, along with the northern Coast of Africa, so all these different cultures come into play because they're all in the same part of the world. I'm Greek, so it was always a thrill to see some of our stories being intertwined with others. And lowkey, but actually highkey, Sinbad was my childhood crush, lol.

I have no idea how Sinbad and Atlantis didn't do well at the box office and used to be the most underrated movies. People back then were deranged for not liking these movies. I mean, the animations are some of the best and the stories are wonderful! The cinematography, the characters - chef's kiss. Those movies are legendary! I'm glad nowadays they have become some of ppl's favorite Disney/Dreamworks movies. Better late than ever.

Eris is one of the amazing characters. She is like Jinx with cosmic powers. Most things she does, she does because she is bored... But I doubt she ever would let mankind die, I mean, then her life would be even more boring. But the will to set chaos, enjoyment of mayhem makes her as Terrifying aswell Terrific villain. Eris and Hades are perhaps best animated villains and are one the greatest movie villains ever.

I remember when I was a kid watching the behind the scenes for this movie, they deliberately paid such close attention to the fights and how Eris moved because this was coming to DVD which allowed you to go frame by frame and the animators knew people would want to do that to check out all the little details. To this day, Eris is probably my favorite villain, maybe only topped by Death in PIB2

As mentioned by a few other comments, Sinbad is originally from 1001 Nights. None of the movie adaptations show this, but he originally just starts out as a merchant looking for some exotic cargo, but by his 3rd adventure he just decides “Being a merchant is successful, but being a sailor is more FUN,” and just leans into being an adventurer. Interestingly, scholars believe the Sinbad stories are a retelling of the Odyssey stories, but incorporating a main character from the culture telling the stories (Persian). That’s why they have the same feel, and many movies, including this one, will just throw in Greek stuff as they see fit, lol. The “book of Peace” and the romance/love triangle storyline is all original. Something the movie creators used to creat a cohesive story out of many smaller ones.

Fun fact! Eris is sometimes regarded as Ares twin sister who accompany’s him in the battlefield! So that makes her a goddess of war along with discord and one of the few legitimate children of Zeus and Hera! alternatively she’s sometimes regarded as Nyx’s daughter (Nyx being one of Greek mythology’s strongest primal entitys!) So aither way she’s badass!
