Just a bit more backstory on why Solar was not quite ready to be the leader: Of course, she had always been the maknae throughout her life, but also, she didn't train for this position during their trainee days at RBW, because Mamamoo was supposed to debut as a 5 member group, and the member who left before debut was the oldest and supposed to be the leader. When she left, the leader position automatically fell upon Solar's shoulders, as she was the oldest out of the 4 members. So yea, she wasn't prepared at all. At first, she was strict and thought she had to be. She didn't know any different, but learned with experience. Also, in Korea and in the kpop industry, leaders usually take the blame for everything the other members do that's wrong. As we know, Hwasa was always the "my way" maknae and often didn't listen, so Solar probably was responsible for her when the company wasn't happy. So she also had to scold Hwasa a lot when they debuted, leading to conflicts between them. But with years of working together and knowing each other better, their bond just grew and as Hwasa said, she didn't know at first that Solar also needed help as the leader. Solar never speaks about her own worries, and she has a lot of burdens from being the leader, but she would never talk about it. All in all, I think their relationship is just so precious and sincere, it is beautiful to see their bond progress like this
Solar is SUCH an inspirational person, the way she thinks is just so ugh I love it, and her strong mindset to do whatever she wants is just *chef’s kiss* I admire her a lot for being so strong
The most difficult thing she probably did was hide from everyone that her dog for 18years, JJing JJing, died. They were in the middle of concert preparations and she waited till after the concerts to tell anyone about it. Nobody knew, not even the members, she just mourned the loss all by herself. The message she wrote afterwards on the fan cafe was so powerful that the entire fan base just went into a mourn.
nooo i remember when this happened. i was so scared seeing such a long post from her and got even more devastated when i read the translation. and when i got to the part where she said she didn't want to cause any problems for the members so she decided not to tell them really made me tear up :'(

It wasn't on this video but there was an interview for Hip where the interviewers were crossing the line (rather than talking about their comeback, the interviewers kept asking Hwasa about her controversy) and the other members were clearly furious and Solar kept whispering to Moonbyul that Moonbyul should answer the questions even if the questions were directed to Hwasa to stop the interviewers from targeting Hwasa.
In that interview, it was quite visceral that solar was pissed with the way those reporters kept hounding on hwasa. The way her and wheein's reactions changed from smiley to unamused was scary. Angel line was ready to throw hands.
It wasn't her birthday, just Solar congratulating Byul on her solo debut set (she was filming Selgfish with Seulgi), same then Yong sent coffee trucks to Wheein and Hwasa's sets for their solo as well
The dog costumes are from their crack song "waggy", it's another silly and fun song, they usually dress up is absurd costumes for it - it's one of my favorites!

Moonbyul thought she was calling a fan. To Moonbyul's understanding, that segment was about picking one of fan letters and calling that person live on air. The staff just gave Solar's letter as a prank there. But Byul did actually call a fan on that show.
3:24 Solar wasn't telling her to cover up. In Korean and other Asian cultures, crossing your legs (in some circumstances) can be seen as arrogant. I guess Solar didn't want Hwasa to get attacked for sitting in an 'arrogant' pose during an interview, especially as rookies (which they were at the time of that video).
Wheein and Hwasa was happy and touched seeing a truck.... Its a truck food.... Korean artist and actors usually get food trucks from fellow artist or actors to show their support.
Doing the "We Got Married" tv show with Eric Nam, once he got to know her some, he was willing to let her take the lead on household finances and such. But he's American, therefore a little more enlightened than most Korean men.
Solar was so strict with all the members because everything came back to her and she was inexperienced and scared herself. They were all so young but imagine coming to a point where your members have started to think that you hate them 🥺😭 solar was really hurt by this and it didn't help that she couldnt properly express herself either.. they've come to understand each other much better over the years and now their bond is like that of a family, its so beautiful
I feel like Solar takes some time to warm up to but once you get to know her it's easy to see how earnest she is and how open she is to try anything. When she tries something she always gives it 200%. I personally think her mindset is really admirable!
solar's the only member that didn't get to spend any time as my personal bias before wheein got a stranglehold on that role but she's actually the one i admire the most. the way she gives everything she does her all (and then some) always inspires me to try and be the same
Hwasa sees her as a Mom, she's extremely proud of Hwasa considering how she witnessed her growth as an artist and as a woman who suffered the most from critics due to her looks when they debut until today. She's often called Yongmom by the fandom just because of her loving nature 😍 and would be seen taking care of the members the most
You’re not crazy, kpop groups in general are pretty specifically designed to encourage fan engagement like this. And it works, even when you’re aware of the realities of the industry. I fell down the hole with some other groups first, but I gotta admit mamamoo do feel more genuine - to the point where I go back to my other favourite groups and they just seem a little vapid in comparison lol. (Not naming names, cos y’know how fans can be).
@@quetimportav6028 Yass Solar and Jiu remind me so much of eachother, plus they look so similar?!? I've never seen anyone mention it but they look so alike especially how they smile with their eyes and mouth, plus they're both so sweet but firm and talented etc. I could go one for days

Like they don't care what others think of them if they are being themselves. At first I thought they were very alike, like twins, but after a while it's less so.

While I adore Mamamoo, Red Velvet, Black Pink and G-Idle so much, I really decided to take K-Pop with a pinch of salt. The industry killed many idols already. Don‘t trust and believe the screen too much.

She always cries whenever they sing "I love too" (I think) at concerts and makes an impromptu speech every time about their experiences and how grateful she is. sometimes she's seriously full-on crying with her face crumpled and everything. It's actually harder to make Wheein cry. At one of their concerts where everyone was crying, she said jokingly, "Everyone, I have become an emotionless human again!" because she was the only member not crying. (She doesn't feel less, though - wheein has gone through a lot)
Solar is probably one of the most patient people that I've seen. It takes a lot of patience and understanding in being a leader, and I'm glad she has a lot of it (she even reads comments from the antis and just shrug it off). But then again I know that she's also just a human being and there are times when she just can't contain her feelings and just cry...I'm so glad they have each other ;u;
Hwasa really is the most soft one. Also, without any makeup Hwasa looks like a baby and the opposite of her video & live performance. Have you seen the video where Wheein and Hwasa go back to their hometown? They wore their school uniforms and made friendship rings. 😂 If there wasn't a camera crew you could have mistaken Hwasa for an actual school girl. Fun fact: Solar is the one who always tells people not to cry and then cries 5 seconds later. 💖
Around the 16min mark, when Wheein is speaking, a song comes up that is called Star Wind Flower Sun. That song was composed by Solar and Moonbyul and, from what I've gathered from fan videos, it's supposed to be about Solar's feelings towards the members and towards moomoos in general. It would be nice to see you react to one of their live performances of that song, as well as the lyrics. Having read the lyrics after learning about Solar's struggles with being the leader, I thought certain verses really show how she feels about the girls.
don't forget the three solar's emotion cover songs released with that hair, too. "nada sou sou", "it's been a long time" and "where the wind rises" (the three i tend to suggest the most)
The video with the puppy/burger costumes are from their stages of "Waggy". Since they usually have a more mature appeal to their songs and performances, I think they just wanted to mess with moomoos and made a really childish, fun song as a contrast :D
And contrary to popular belief, it was solar who didn't like the waggy stages. Hwasa loved it tho, especially when solar does her animal sound solo, that's also why yongleader does it so often. My favorite adlib was "I'm 29 years old"
I totally understand that "getting closer" feeling... I remember when I was getting into mamamoo back in 2018 and the moment I started knowing them better I felt like I had found something important in my life. You need to watch "Tears"/"Never letting go" MV, that was the video that made me feel like I was never going to forget these girls.
i think moonbyul is the toughest among them. solar rarely cry, but always she cry when she open up something or felt sorry toward her member. wheein and hwasa is equal i guess. maybe that why they so close and bff.

Wheein is very strong. Tho I do remember the members/maybe Hwasa mentioning that she is softer off camera, and that she shows how tough she is for her members, when they are sad she is strong for them. But i think i agree she might be a bit more emotional, especially around Hwasa.
Solar sent a coffee shop truck to Wheein's solo mv (Easy) and later to Hwasa's mv (Twit) shooting studios to show her support. Moonbyul was shooting her solo mv (selfish) on different locations, so Solar couldn't send a truck. Solar came to the location in person with a cake to congratulate Moonbyul's first solo song mv (not Byul's birthday). Solar's Elsa-like hair is from the song Starry Night. You still have a few more mvs to catch up before you get to Starry Night. If you really do like Wheein, please react to Easy mv. You can't talk about Wheein and never have seen Easy.

"Also if they're supposed to be calling a fan, that is super sweet" this comment made me think of that solarsido video where solar actually went to a fan's house for a "college entrance test day" solarsido video. :) she went to visit a fan so she can givr them advice and cheer them on for the (then) upcoming college entrance exams. i just thought it was really fascinating how instead of making the fan go to the company, solar actually went to the fan's house, met their parents, and hung out with the fan in their own room!
I'm sure that Solar was a nun in her past life. I mean, she's really patient and play along with them but she also had to carry the critisism that MMM was having in their first days.

It wasn't that Solar and Hwasa didn't get along, but that Solar was in charge of bridging the company and the members. Hwasa does things her own way and sometimes, especially early on, it was not what the company wanted, and so Solar needed to be very strict with her. As Solar grew as a leader and Hwasa understood the burden of leadership on Solar, this was less of an issue. But they are very close, and were roommates.
No you're not crazy. It made me feel closer to them too especially if you watch their MMMTV (mamamoo tv). They're so real and relatable it feels like you're close friends.
I've been watching your reactions to mamamoo lately, and I love it. The animal onese and burger meal, it's a song called Waggy. When they used to live together, Solar used to tell horror stories (upon loser club's requests), so that they can fall asleep. ahahaha Yes blonde hair Solar in Starry night, when they shoot the MV a local NZ commented that she looked like Elsa. ahaha Their bond is so strong, no one can separate them. Byul lives near Solar (same building perhaps), she is always at Solar's apartment, so that Solar can feel less lonely. Wheein and Hwasa also live nearby. Byul with an eyepatch... eye infection. it's a radio show, she is sick that day. Solar has no one to guide her during those early days, that's why she is very hard on them. And also the pressure.
The video were they wore onesies is their waggy stage perf. Solar has a part where she's supposed to sound like different animals but Hwasa liked her elephant sounds that she begged her to do it all the time. Solar looked loke she enjoyed those concepts but she doesnt. 😆 That's one of my fave MMM song btw.
Mamamoo's start was difficult, Hwasa lived in a small rooftop apartment, it was not good for her mental health, so Moonbyul told Solar that Hwasa was living alone and then the two made the decision to move in with Hwasa (Wheein lived with his uncle). Solar had a comfortable home and even then made that decision. In South Korea, there are cheap apartments on top of the roofs of buildings known as rooftop apartments. They are inexpensive but small and only take up part of the roof of the building. The place was in poor condition, they had no elevator and it was very hot in the summer. But even so they were happy living there. Mamamoo's friendship has been loyal from the beginning, even in difficult times they supported each other and were happy. Of course they have conflicts, but their friendship is very great and they get over it. Mamamoo is one of the groups that has the most true friendship I have ever seen on kpop.
Okay apart from the feels trip I just went on yet again, I had to burst out laughing at the GOT/Dany and Elsa reference. You should have seen the edits during Starry Night era 😂 exactly what you mentioned.
That's how I found Mamamoo, watching videos like these. So I got to know them as people before artists and that's what made me fall in love with them. They're all so genuine, in their friendship and everything they do. Fans gave them the nicknames: Hamster = Moonbyul Bunny = Solar Puppy = Wheein Lion = Hwasa Yeba is a combination of two Korea words, pretty and fool. Moonbyul and fans use it to describe Solar when she's being silly. That song where they are wearing costumes is a song called Waggy. No MV but there's an Mnet live performance you can check out, it's a good song.

It is actually a japanese song and it may not be the greatest song vocal wise (is that how you say it in english?but its definitly a sweet bop, that guitar man...i have to watch it again...ah, where was I...) but it is a really fun and loose atmosphere where each member dances mostly freestyle und you can see that solar is much less strict now and enjoys it even the most. Yeah, she definitly is the biggest crackhead there. Watch it for your entertainment or ours, if you think, it would make a great reaction video! :D
As a fellow international Moo, I too have watched many videos where I didn't know what was really going on, but I was laughing, smiling, and crying right along with them as well.

the weird outfits are from a song called Waggy which was the... B-side track they performed during their comeback for gogobebe (White Wind Album). The songs give off a bossa nova type vibe but its a very light hearted silly song and Solar being... well herself gets the most embarassing role. Honestly considering the how amazing some of the other B-side songs on the album are its kind of a travesty they picked that one, but it was good fan service for moomoos hahaha.
Fun fact: solar was supposed to cgange the last animal sound for each performance but hwasa liked the elefant so much she always asked her to do it so in the end she barely ever changed it xdddd Also hwasa was the one that ejoyed waggy the most, thing that is hard to notice because she got the grumpy cat role. (You can see her trying to contain a few simles here and then) Plus them wearing teletubbie costumes to that award show was also her idea xdddd
You're not crazy Austin. We Moomoos feel the same way as you do. MAMAMOO showing us their vulnerable and down to earth sides make us love them more. They're not pretentious at all and it does feel like we're no different from them and we can be friends with them. One of the best decision I made in my life was stanning them 😊

The name sun really suits her. I love each member of mamamoo. Of course other groups are great too but their bond even with themselves or with their fans, is really sincere u can really feel and see their sincerity.
yeba is a term moonbyul coined for solar. lately, many have been using the 'pretty stupid' for the translation since one video has it as that but i honestly prefer the 'pretty fool' translation since that gets the teasing tone across a lot better. solar often does silly or weird things out of the blue and is pretty accident-prone and often has trouble keeping beat/timing, whether in singing or dancing... all of these tend to get called 'yeba moments' loser club/crew is something that moonbyul, wheein and hwasa named themselves at a fan meeting they had to host without solar (due to an injury). they were pretty certain that they wouldn't be funny without solar but pretty much instantly proved themselves wrong. the nickname for the three stuck, though hamster is one of moonbyul's nicknames since she's fond of stuffing her cheeks when she eats (she also prefers that nickname over the korean term for 'baby chick' that she's had for a while). in fact, she even calls the radio program that she hosts on tuesdays, avengirls, 'hamvengirls' on her days. just for the hamster reference often people will use emojis for the girls. a mouse emoji (meant to be hamster) for moonbyul, either bunny or dragon for solar ('yong' in her name can mean dragon though hers actually means deity), a dog/puppy for wheein and a lion for hwasa and since the 4 season project, many fan submitted subtitles will use the four season colors to mark what girl is speaking. moonbyul's text will be red (red moon album), solar's blue (blue;s album), wheein's white (white wind album) and hwasa's yellow (yellow flower album). once you notice that it gets a lot easier to tell who's saying what when they start speaking all at once. though that only helps in the last few years. before 2018, people just used randomish colors for members so it can still get confusing ...ugh, wheein's biological father. one of the few people i've never met that i seriously despise. the man was a grifter that ruined his own family before abandoning them (which ruined them even more) and then used his daughter's name to help ruin others once she got famous, even though he'd had nothing to do with the family for years. wheein's mother divorced him (at the time, still considered quite a taboo thing to do in south korea...still is, to a degree) and later remarried (considered even more taboo) and is happy with her second husband. wheein actually adores her stepfather and looks up to him. any reference to 'dad' or 'my father' from her is about her stepfather, who she considers her real father

22 is so young truly, it's only in the Kpop industry where 22 would seem 'old'. I really had no idea about all their beginning struggles! i always figured it's hard to start as a group with other strangers, but seeing their bond i wouldn't have guessed they had a rocky beginning with each other. it's also hard to spend all your waking hours with other people. Solar really feels like someone who is so sincere, to the point where her feelings can't be hidden. I kinda struggle with that too, unable to express myself because I take things so personally.
