You asked about baptismal names? It's not an Asian thing, it's a Catholic thing. I believe both Hwasa and Wheein are Catholic. When you are baptised, you can have a Christian/Baptismal name assigned to yourself which may or may not match your legal name. I've seen other people get another name during confirmation as well which is another sacrament in Catholicism. Hwasa has her Baptismal name tattooed on the back of her neck (Maria). Wheein's Baptismal name is Gabriela.

I wouldn't call Wheein a genius for knowing that 4X7 doesn't equal 32. I call her Mamamoo's Data. She remembers everything, is practically perfect at everything she does (making her mistakes more adorable), and is a deadly, spot-on mimic of the other members. If you watch her watching other groups perform at award shows she appears to be totally deadpan but if you look a bit closer you realize she's in Record mode, storing everything she sees for future use. She's their under the radar secret weapon.
Wheein is definitely their "golden child" she is too precious off stage also a badass onstage! I really cannot pick a bias between them they all shine individually and as a group they have that WOW factor for me. I love their beagleness and how their personalities are when they are with each other. You can do a chronological reaction for their discography. Also checkout their B-side songs its amazing.
Hwasa is literally the definition of "starting from the bottom now we here". Despite the bullying from a young age till now cause apparently she doesn't fit into k industry's image, she managed to become one of Korea's favourite girls and she did that by herself and many talents. Wheein and Hwasa's case being in childhood friends then ended up being in the same group is actually rare in kpop. Usually in agencies, the aspiring artists undergo years of training somehow like a survival talent show until the company chooses who gets to be in the final cut. Wheein and Hwasa decided to leave everything behind back in the province and then go to the city to live their dream. They almost didn't debut together. But here we are
I like her leaderships. She's learned how to approach and support her members individually. Mamamoo's equality and healthy atmosphere happen because the leader is very open-minded and really care for her team. Solar is the cool unnie you want to have!

Yeah, Hwasa is hated a lot. But the large majority of that hate comes from fans from other groups, and not from Korea either. They just hate on her and her body and her face just because they can and they know their tweets will be a hit if they do that. She's basically a punching bag on twitter stan and it's very sad and depressing. They're just trying to put Hwasa down just to bring their own idols up. In Korea, she's always been more or less accepted actually, maybe not a first, but after a year or so, she became really popular and she's complimented a lot on her figure, her curves and how much she looks like western stars with her exotic body. She gets in scandals for how she dresses, but so does every member in Mamamoo (well, not Moonbyul of course), because they dress too sexy. But that doesn't mean that she's despised at all, she's considered a queen and has a pretty huge fanbase, that's largest than any of the other members by far. A lot of people are pretty toxic, I don't want to call them fans because I don't think they deserve to be called like that, but there is always at least one member that some hates and just want to kick out of the group. I saw not too long ago, some posts about Yeri from RV for example, about how she brings nothing to the group and she's useless and not even pretty and should just leave. There will always be people like that, but be assured, those are always a minority. Negativity tend to bring way more attention than positivity, so sometimes you feel like there is a lot when in fact, it's just you only focusing on them and unintentionally dismissing the good.
Your experience with the members' voices is very similar to mine. I prefer jazz and r&b over pop singers so Hwasa's voice immediately stood out, then I realized Wheein was probably the overall best singer in the group. My first impression of Solar was that she was the Korean version of a stereotypical ditzy cheerleader but after hearing them do a few ballads on Immortal Songs I couldn't deny that her voice was the one that always seemed to bring a lump to my throat and make me tear up so I put aside my bias against her and stopped trying to resist falling in love with her. And as I got to know the members better I realized she wasn't an airhead after all. Solar has an impossibly multi-faceted personality and she embodies so many contradictory dualities that it's hard to get a handle on her as a baby or toddler moomoo. I'm sure you'll continue to point out ways that Solar could sing in a more healthy and technically correct manner but imo it would be more helpful if you could explain how she uses her vocal technique to induce goosebumps, tears, and in general treat my nervous system like a frog in a biology lab. I'm probably showing my age - do kids still learn about nerves by torturing frogs in bio labs?
Couldn't have said it better. On first appearances Solar seems the most open yet I think she's the most guarded. We'd never know when she's having a hard time and when she shows it or more likely the members mention it, it actually makes my heart twinge. Also seeing her serious or angry unsettles me because I can barely handle straight-faced, cool, collected Solar. But when she's performing, the way she can go from immersed in the emotions of a song, to smiling and drawing you in, to femme fatale, to crackhead is honestly worth talking about. She's endlessly charismatic and that is her superpower on stage.
@@nadia3198 We seem to get so much personal contact with them via MMM-TV, Vlives, Solarsido, etc, but like you I also think there's a ton of stuff they don't share. I think what Solar withholds isn't from fear of exposure or seeming to be weak or anything like that but is rather due to her innate sense of integrity and what I would call nobility. It's miraculous that all her many polar opposite attributes seem to peacefully & playfully co-exist in one relentlessly positive person along with her enormous talent and the many skills she's acquired. If she was a character in a kdrama everyone would complain that she was too unbelievable. Solar is living proof that truth is stranger than fiction. 💙
a thing about hwasa being a role model... she is specifically because she just wants to be herself. that is still a rarity in south korea, where women are still expected to be and do just as their elders (mostly men) want. it's also why mamamoo as a whole are generally considered to be at the forefront of south korea's burgeoning feminism movement and why all four members of the group are considered role models for so many women of all ages she did kind of risk things with the pixie cut early on but at the same time she didn't... wheein and hwasa were actually the core of the group. they're what one ceo used as an example when he explained to the other what he wanted their group to be like, how they played well together and were basically family, while also being amazing singers. so yeah, when she showed up with the pixie cut the ceo was mad about it and threatened to cut her but i'm pretty sure even she knew he wouldn't. she did write an 'apology' about it, which became the song "i do me" put in their debut album because the ceo liked it so much (it's also what she performed a little bit of during the 'rap' segment of this video)
I'm going to leave a suggestion I think it's going to make you come around to Solar even more. This video is called "Solar being the leader and mother of Mamamoo" by the channel Hwasa's throne is my face. Yongsun does a lot for both the members and Moomoos alike, she just never lets all of it wear her down and she never lets us see how hard it all is for her. This video is a good start. She's incredibly talented and she's a fantastic leader and human being. Also, the fantastic Purple Hawke is putting together a part 3 that'll be an introduction to MMM as a group. They said it'd drop after MMM's comeback next month. So, watch out for that as we know it's going to be just as great as the first 2 parts!
I think I was a bit like you, when I first started with mamamoo solar was the one who captured me the least, then I started watching her solarsido RU-vid channel in my downtime and her personality really shines through and i slowly started liking her more and more. Now I cant even pick a favourite. I like them all so much.

Wheein is the member which quietly ruins your bias list. When you first got into mmm, wheein prolly wouldnt be the first member you're interested in, same case with me. I used to like solar the most, but as i got into mmm, wheein quickly became my bias, till now
I mean when they meant Wheein is the "Genius" of MAMAMOO it's not really about saying that the others arent as smart as her, it's just while the members each excels at their own craft, Wheein excels in most of them as shown in the video. She can belt (like Solar), she can whistle note (like Hwasa), she learns dances quickly (like Byul), and she's the only one with drawing skills xD and that's just some of their talents lol
Hwasa gets a lot of h8, mostly in twitter. that's why even if your bias is wheein, moonbyul or solar. You will protect her with all of your heart because hwasa is our baby and have a soft spot in our heart.

Same experience. I got into Hwasa, Solar, then Hwasa again, then Wheein. But then each member released solos and I found myself streaming each and every video. I actually found I prefered Byul's solo "Eclipse" to "Maria" and "Spit it Out." So, I'm officially confirmed that though Wheein still reigns #1 but all OT4 has special place in my heart.
I love your honest commentary. Us Hwasa biased moos are the smallest group in the fandom ironically, despite her huge general public popularity. So it's always nice seeing someone appreciate her like you do because I know that the comment section tends to be dominated by wheein and byul biased moos that often seek to convert reactors. i just finished watching queendom and hwasas reaction when they won made me CRY she was so overwhelmed and happy she couldnt speak and had to hand the mic off and hid behind wheein and moonbyul went to go comfort her it was adorable

I understand the crititcism about Solar but you have no idea how important she is in the group. As a start you can react to “Solar being the leadet of Mamamoo” compilation. She’s my ultimate bias in Kpop because of her on and off stage supportive skills. She has carried a lot of weight.

A lot of Christians have Baptismal/Confirmation names. Also, many Koreans and other Asian ethnicities have an English name too because it's cool and so English speakers don't massacre their names. Wheein's English name is Shelby and her Baptismal name is Gabriella. It's not known what Hwasa's English name is, if she has one. Moonbyul's role as Mamamoo's rapper was thrust upon her. Yes, she managed to make it her own and rack up a ton of writing credits. But Moonbyul lost confidence in her singing and she auditioned as a singer. Dark Side of The Moon is awesome because she got to shine as a singer. Hwasa has the kind of voice you expect from a female K-Pop rapper and her few raps work very well. I want to hear more lower register harmonies with her and Moonbyul tbh because those dueling Wheein and Solar vocals are amazing and I think Hwasa and Moonbyul could do something like that.
Nice reaction! Yes, Purple Hawke said there going to be a Part 3 (about the group as a whole), hope you'll react to that once it comes out. Also you should really catch up on their other MVs (solos, group, and covers). It's such a catchy track and all about her "my way" attitude. (Also check out "Be Calm", which was her solo in the Yellow Flower mini, because it is gorgeous. And "Pink Panty" because it's pure crack.)

It’s pretty common for ppl of other cultures to have more than one name, some people call it their “church” name too. you meet a lot of Christians who have 2 or 3 names each for different reasons, like a nickname but more significant in a persons life.
I find it so funny how shy and introverted they all are when they're on their own (Byul is a bit more easygoing) but Wheein .... In a tv show called "Secret Unnie" where they're supposed to share an apartment with another random kpop idol, she sat down in a corner barely talking or responding to the SNSD girl that was matched with her. I didn't know how really shy she was until this moment, it's such a crazy contrast to her puppy self when she's with the members, and so cute, I think all moomoos are soft for Wheein ♥️

I do respect you, you good on catch something. Yeahh I feel that too, Solar a backbone of the group, the stabilizer, even in a bad timing (AAA 2018), she successfully bring back cheer for members. But in the otherhand, she redeem herself so hard, and feeling lonely at the time. Thats why I always fall to Solar again, even got confused to others.

Thank you for reacting to this guide. I think this is the best one to get to know the members better. That being said, I sort of understand why is taking time for you to warm up to Solar. I really love her now, but when I first became a moo, I didn't understand her much. She is the leader but she seemed a bit wild for the position. But then I started to watch more content of hers and I realized how much pressure she was put under since the beginning, being the elder and on top of that recieving the leader role when she was used to being the youngest in her family. Also, she was the leader of a group that was constantly ignored by being from a small company, disrepected and picked on for being older than the average idol, not fitting beauty standards, shunning the rules of perfect ladylike behaviour and gender roles. But she rose to the ocasion in my opinion, even though she said was strict in the beginning because of lack of experience, she nonetheless learnt how to treat and encourage each member and a lot of crazy stuff that she does is to cheer the members up. She is a hard worker, sensitive and inspirational person. Her youtube channel offers a very interesting glimpse into her personality which is being crazy, but at the same time down to earth and relatable. That was long hahaha. All I wanted to say is to give her a chance. I don't understand much of singing techniques , so I'll hold my peace on that aspect. But she really is amazing once you get to know the group better. :)

hey thanks for another reaction of mamamoo!! purple hawke is planning a group-focused part 3 and will be released after their cb in november so we have to wait a little longer also, don't worry about not knowing all their solo stuff - there's a lot. if we put all their solo + collabs + solo covers together it'll be +100 songs i believe hahaha but i strongly recommend you to watch as much as possible, even if it's for a react or not since it can take a loong time to cover everything on camera. but songs such as Whee In's Easy (i guess you will like the acoustic ver., it's much more like a live performance) and her covers of Kehlani's Honey and Baekhyun's Candy are must listen/watch. and so is Hwasa's "Don't" ft Loco; Moonbyul's Selfish, Absense and In My Room; Solar's Spit Out and her covers on Solarsido (i'm just saying the ones that came straight to my mind, others moomoos may feel free to add up this list) aand i saw in comments that moomoos already recommended you to watch "Solar being the leader and mother of mamamoo" by Hwasa's throne is my face so i'll just leave my agree about that. it'll show how solar is important and although her crackhead/yeba side, she's a real and respected leader. p.s.: if you want more crack videos, "introducing guide to mc dduk and mc ddak" by purple hawke is really fun lol

We do have baptismal name, especially if you convert to catholicism. My brother name is Glenn, but when he converted to catholism, he adopted the name James, as Glenn is not a Christian name.
Honestly all of MMM have struggled so much from a small unknown company to make it where they are today. Solar started auditioning in her 20s and was rejected around 50 times because she was too old (most trainees are around 10-18years old) and ugly as well (which I don’t understand, but I digress). When she was asked to be the leader of MMM because of her age, she really struggled because she thought she had to be really strict for them to succeed and she hated it but kept all of her thoughts and feelings to herself. She ended up breaking down when Hwasa asked her if she hated her...I really admire Solar, as you can see how hard-working and involved she is in the creative process of their songs and MVs. For example, in Hip she was the one who came up with the makeup and outfit for her princess look, the half and half look with the drag queens, and she even learned how to box just for her boxing scenes. And that’s just one MV. Moonbyul trained to be a vocalist, but ended up having to rap because the rest of MMM are vocal queens. She struggled to find her place in a vocal group and really lost confidence in her abilities, especially when they went on singing competitions where she’d barely get any lines and seemed more like a backup dancer. MMM also used to dress more feminine, which she wasn’t comfortable with. Overall she wasn’t sure of her position in MMM for a long time. Wheein has the most scandals and lots of people hate on her. Her biological father abandoned her family when she was still young, but once she became a celebrity he used her name to commit fraud and wanted her to pay off his debts. It was a huge deal, I believe someone passed away due to financial struggles caused by Wheein’s dad and she really struggled during that time. She has also always been the least popular member, and she’s spoken at length about how insecure that made her (which is honestly quite sad, since she’s the best vocalist and dancer in MMM). She also has severe anxiety and missed many performances because of it (I speculate her weight issues are due to her mental health/medication but not 100% sure...but yes, her company says she takes medication for her anxiety). She gets a lot of hate for the way she looks as well, and because she doesn’t have the large fan base Hwasa has I believe it affected her more. She’s gotten a lot better about loving herself, but those things usually remain as a constant struggle. You already know about Hwasa, so I’ll just leave it at that haha.
