PS: Regarding Spock's acceptance of the hippies: Spock being both half Vulcan & half human, is an outsider to both cultures and therefore he can identify with the hippies, who are also outsiders, kindred spirits, as it were. Another great reaction. Can't wait for your final reactions on Star Trek! ❤

"Requiem for Methuselah" is one of my favorites. Dr. Sevrin was played by Skip Homier who also played Melakon in "Patterns of Force" S2, E21 (The Nazi episode)

"The Way to Eden" was a massive re-write of Dorothy Fontana's original scipt outline called "Joanna." Chekov's past romantic interest in Irina is a dim echo of the original idea: Dr. McCoy's daughter Joanna coming aboard the Enterprise and becoming romantically involved with Kirk, causing a major conflict between the three. Fontana didn't like the changes and asked to be credited under the pseudonym "Michael Richards".

Mr. Flint is the original Highlander! (But without the swordplay and beheadings, but the episode was short...) James Daly also played Honorious in "Planet of the Apes" (1968) and he was a regular on the "Medical Center" series with Chad Everett. Skip Homeier played Melakon in "Patterns of Force". He was the Nazi who ridiculed Spock for his "low forehead denoting a lack of intelligence" and his "malformed ears". In one of Trek's most priceless twists, he also played Dr. Sevrin.

The end of this episode (along with the end of Amok Time) are strong pillars in the K/S shippers canon. McCoy says Spock can’t feel love, and yet Spock shows Kirk great love at end.

I actually think that Spock mind-melding with Kirk to "forget" was as compassionate as love. Love doesn't have to be romantic. Benevolent comes to mind.

It's true Friendship. The Greeks have 4 words that encompass the different kinds of Loves that English has to use many words for- 'Eros',- Romantic Love, 'Storge'- Parental Love, 'Phileo'- Friendship Love & the greatest, 'Agape', which is total Selfless, Self-Sacrificing Love. It wasn't the greatest episode, but that scene was one of the most powerful in the show.

One of the things I like about "The Way to Eden" is that it implys that people are allowed to think what they want and try new ideas for living. That Star Fleet & The Federation isn't the end all, be all way to live. If you don't want to live by computers and tech, that's fine!
@luminiferous1960
@luminiferous1960 Месяц назад
I don't think you've stated fully the implications of the episode. The episode does imply that people are allowed to think what they want and try new ideas, as you say, but it also implies that if you suspend your critical thinking about new ideas and follow someone blindly, the consequences are not good, like death for Adam and Dr. Sevrin, and injury for Sevrin's other followers. There could have been even worse consequences if the planet they landed on had been inhabited by humanoids since Sevrin was a carrier of a fatal communicable disease. There is a strong implication that it is best to have a balanced approach as represented by Spock's lauding their goal but not their way of trying to achieve it, and also by the conversation between Pavel and Irina when they are saying goodbye.

Trust McCoy to use the rayna situation to make another ig at Spock when spock actually understood th situation and showed empathy for rayna's well being by trying to stop her making the choice as well as mindwiping kirk to spare him the hurt of her loss.

I don't think Spock only wiped Kirk's mind. But also experienced the emotions through Kirk that McCoy said he never could.
@luminiferous1960
@luminiferous1960 Месяц назад
McCoy is a self-admitted non-expert on Vulcans. He frequently forgets that Vulcans have very strong emotions, but have learned to suppress them. Furthermore, Spock experiences both Vulcan and Human emotions as a Vulcan-Human hybrid. Spock experienced both love and the loss of love in the episode "This Side of Paradise" when his inhibitions and ability to suppress his emotions were removed. Similarly, in "The Naked Time" and in "Amok Time" Spock temporarily lost his inhibitions and ability to suppress his emotions. As Memory Alpha states: "Contrary to stereotype, Vulcans possess strong emotions. They use meditation as a way to suppress those emotions. For instance, emotions like remorse, relief, joy, and embarrassment were all displayed by Spock when he thought Captain Kirk was dead and then saw him alive. (TOS: "Amok Time"). Indeed, Vulcan emotions were far more intense, violent, and passionate than those of many other species, including even Humans. (TNG: "Sarek") It was this passionate, explosive emotionality that Vulcans blamed for the vicious cycle of wars which nearly devastated their planet. As such, they focused their mental energies on mastering them. The essence of their logical society was in arriving at the truth through logical process. Emotions were illogical, thus making them impure, and deterrent to truth. Vulcans were born with the same emotions that afflicted their violent ancestors, but continual mental conditioning generally gave them the impassivity they sought. (TAS: "Yesteryear") Though not all could arrive at the ultimate pure logical state, the exacting process of mental control gave Vulcans enough to conform to the ideals of Vulcan society. The ultimate level of logical thought was achieved through the attainment of kolinahr, which was said to purge them of all remaining emotions. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)"

Lovely comments on Requiem for Methusaleh, whose rerun was the last episode of the original Star Trek to air. Court, doing all the editing and stuff for these videos must be so much work! I greatly appreciate it, and find your comments interesting, and always love seeing your beauty 😍I will definitely watch all the episodes if you react to all of Star Trek, and even if you do not 🙂 The Methuselah one reminds me of Highlander, the movie and series! The series is about the cousin of the guy in the movie. They are both immortal, born in the highlands of Scotland in the 1500s and still alive in 1992!! Except both cousins are good guys 🙂 But it follows Duncan MacLeod (the guy in the series) in his life in modern day "seacouver" (actually Vancouver, BC, lol, but meant to look like both that and Seattle) as he runs into other immortals from his past! Some of them are evil and he has to kill them. But MacLeod was on the right side of a lot of different things in history...he fought for the USA side in the Civil War, and helped free slaves, and he was even on a team that tried to assassinate Hitler. Joan Jett was in an episode, she played an Immortal! Joan Jett's modus operandi was to kill mortals who her enemy cared about, to throw them off guard emotionally. She tried to kill MacLeod's girlfriend, who knew his secret. His girlfriend, among other things, was a welder, so she held her welding torch up to Joan Jett and said "I may not be able to kill you, but I'll give you a facial you'll never forget!" lmao. 🙂 I still think that would be a great show for you to watch...they have all the episodes here on RU-vid, made available for free, legally, by the copyright owner. If you search "highlander the series" on here, something will come up on the right "highlander free with ads" that's the official uploads! 🙂

Good comment about Nomad - M-4's tail looks like Nomad's head. Regarding the cure of ritalin - does the crew suffer from ADHD? On the Way to Eden, the singing dude is Charles Napier. It's ironic he's plays a hippy, because he's usually cast as a person in authority or the rigid bad guy. Sevrin appears to be based on Timothy Leary - All the "acid" on the planet is probably part of the joke. Way to Eden and Spock's Brain are regarded as some of the worst episodes of Trek

Wouldn't Requiem for Methuselah have been better if Rayna had fallen in love with Kirk *and* Spock (for different reasons) in addition to Flint? A three-way conflict of feelings and choices would have been more believable as a cause for her eventual breakdown. The development of her affinity with Spock, begun earlier and abandoned later in the script, could have taken the place of some of the more awkward outcomes.

"Requiem for Methuselah" Again, I was a pubescent male and Rayna/Louise Sorel (IRL politics aside) stacks up quite nice with Susan Oliver/The Cage/Menagerie😍😍😋😋😈😈 There's a goof about Bones checking her carotid artery to check her pulse, already knowing she's an android. My response, as a doctor it could very well be "muscle memory". I would have needed Spock's help to forget her myself. That frozen model of the Enterprise is similar to "Catspaw". "The Way To Eden" Charles Napier😇 also played Murdock in "Rambo First Blood II", and Lt. Boyle in "Silence of the Lambs". Chekov's squeeze had the worst "Russian" accent ever. 🙄 Checkov could have been court marshalled for mutiny for giving TMI with the ships abilities.

@tranya327
@tranya327 Месяц назад
I've always had a soft spot for the way 'Requiem' makes me feel. That said, this Kirk is the most distant from being 'the Kirk WE KNOW' of any episode in the series: One supposedly becomes a Starship Captain because he's mastered the art of putting the needs of others ahead of his own. Yet, at a time when Kirk's entire crew are suffering from a potentially lethal epidemic, we're asked to believe that in less than four hours Kirk would go so crazy-obsessed for a woman that he'd forget his stricken crew and plead with Rayna to go with him. (??!) ...We can maybe speculate that Kirk has been under hidden mental strain since losing both Edith and Miramanee, and that something within Kirk finally 'broke' at this moment... But nothing in the episode actively supports that interpretation. The story is just weird. ...Quality sagging, late-in-third-season, when the show was within a few months of wrapping up for good & everyone knew it, perhaps? •••• When Flint says about M4, "Too useful a device to be without, really..." I think of everyone today and our iPhones.
@megalictis9002
@megalictis9002 Месяц назад
Is it just me, or is there something a little unrealistic (or even creepy) about Kirk declaring his love for a "woman" who he's just met? The whole episode takes place in less than four hours (the time limit McCoy mentioned to treat the infection spreading through the crew). For a "lonely young man" who seems to find romantic companionship in about 25% of the episodes) that seems like a new record. Of course, he did kiss Andrea the android in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" Not that Flint's behavior toward his custom-built love-doll is any less problematic...

Great reaction yes Eden is a problem and we won’t see that again until Star Trek five the final frontier that’s why Buck understood them more because his brother half brother was banished from Volcon because he believes in motions and he searched for Eden the mythical place the universe began. He’s also looking for the paradise And Dr. Seven reminds me of Unabomber Kozinski he went crazy because he was with computers and it gave him cancer. Supposedly that’s why he became a bomber and destroyed that right over. We’re trying to say they are trying to reach the protesters on the 60s, the same time this show was on those purchasers in the streets counterculture Against the government, trying to say they were trying to make people appreciate them and at the same time people don’t like them trying to reach both sides thanks for the fun until next time

RfM is another one of those episodes that contradicts actual Earth history. Brahms is not DaVinci, and so on. Good sci-fi makes its points without outright lying. And Kirk really is way out of character in this one. He was not there long enough to fall in love with anyone. Why would he need a "Forget" shot from Spock in this one, but when he allows Edith Keeler to die, you'd think that would've messed him up worse? If _Star Trek_ has taught us anything about androids, it's that emotions are fatal to them. 🙃 "Way to Eden" started out as a D.C. Fontana script entitled "Joanna." McCoy's daughter comes aboard and starts having a relationship with Kirk, which causes Bones to see Jim in a different light. Changed quite a bit, didn't it? The romance was moved over to Chekov and Irina. Fontana would write an episode of the fan series _Star Trek New Voyages_ later ("To Serve All My Days"), which guest stars Walter Koenig and the actress who plays Irina. Ironically, it's not a sequel to "Way to Eden," but "The Deadly Years." As for where the name "Herbert" used in such a derrogatory manner came from, there is some speculation that says Herb Solow, an executive who was involved with TOS, was the inspiration.

ST-Next Gen is an excellent series, IF you can make it through season ONE, which is pretty bad actually. I promise you that by Season Two is gets much better, and by season 3-7 its excellent. But making it through the first year will probably be a slog, I rem when it first aired on TV and season one was so bad than I gave up on the show, and just checked back in on it occationally in its second year, I liked it enough by season two to have some hope for the show - and Season 3 was a "Banger", and amazingly its stayed that way through to the end of the last season, Seven. 2-cents.
