I don't know if you remember that in the first film, Leia was the senator for her planet of Alderaan in the Imperial Senate. It was a puppet senate for the emperor but was once a more or less legitmate senate. Leia's father was the senator of their planet before her, and he was married to the queen of Alderaan, which is why Leia is a princess. So at the beginning of the first film, Leia was officially working for the Empire, but she and her father had been secretly helping the rebels with intel and weapons. They used their positions as high-ranking members of the senate to the rebels' advantage, giving the Empire all the reason they needed to blow up Alderaan. Later in the film, it's mentioned during the generals' meeting on the Death Star that the emperor had finally done away with the senate altogether, giving control of planets and star systems to regional Imperial warlords called Moffs and Grand Moffs, who ruled as they pleased, answering only to the emperor himself. Just a reminder that this is where we need to end up with before Ep.4. We all know we have to end up with Luke and Leia separated, Anakin becoming Vader, etc, but sometimes people forget about the political undercurrents of the movie, which are very interesting to me, but weren't so popular with a lot of OT fans when Ep.1 came out. "Too much politics" they complained, but it is as much a story about how a democracy becomes a dictatorship as it is about Anakin and Obi-Wan.

When I saw "Empire" in the theater, I fell in love with Master Yoda. When "Jedi" first came out in '83, I fell in love with (what I call) "Emperor Pruneface". To this day, I can't decide who I love more. But I can say this: the movie quote I love more than any, for all time, is Palpy's "Now, young Skywalker...you will die".

Very nice insight about the green lightsaber! In Eps.IV and V, it was blue (not white). In universe, Luke built his own after losing the blue one (which belonged to his father). Behind the scenes, they wanted the lightsaber to pop more against the blue sky in the desert, so they invented lightsaber coloration (other than blue and red, of course). There are now many more colors, orange, purple, white, yellow, which all have their explanations in universe, but honestly, it's mostly just because they look cool! I love how jaded you were about knowing that Darth Vader was Luke's father, yet you were blindsided that Leia was his sister! The first time I saw the last scene, Vader was another person, and we saw the Ewoks Yub-nubbing. Both those things were changed in 1997 for the Special Edition. The new scene is more meaningful and grandiose, but I kinda miss the song... I mean, they invented a language for it, and just dropped it later. Oh well. Anyhoo, nice reactions! Keep it up.

Oh, for the record: six to nine months passed, whilst Han was in carbon freeze. And we're now nearly four years, since Luke took on the Death Star... And Luke's sister issue was sort of tacked on, to tie up the trilogy. Originally it would have been a dangling plot thread. But they resolved who she was here. In an earlier outline, it was a separate, unclear character.@@CourtReacts-zm9yv

The other person was Sebastian Shaw. He originally played the unmasked Anakin Skywalker. The fact that they changed it made no sense to me because they showed the older version of Obi Wan (Alec Guinness), not the younger one (Ewan McGregor). Why not leave the older version of Anakin the same? If you watch this series in the order in which they were released, you would have no idea who that young man is. It’s stupid, to me.

@@hephner78 That's not even close to why Mace has a purple saber. Samuel L Jackson who initially asked George Lucas for a small part, has told this story many times about asking George for a purple saber so he could see himself easier on screen. GL surprised SLJ after kinda laughing at the request as GL said there were only green and red sabers by creating a purple one. 😊

Yes, anger and hatred are natural, if negative, emotions. The trick is that using the Force when you're overcome with those emotions amplifies your access... it makes you more powerful in that moment, but that power also ultimately corrupts you to the Dark Side. And, as Yoda said in this film and in Empire, once you start down that path, it will dominate you. So Jedi are trained to process those emotions and not use the Force when under their negative influence. Well, they're supposed to be trained to process them, and they're supposed to not use it.

Because it was the film where Vader reveals this information, I thought it was safe to comment on it. It gives a slightly different feel. In fact every, order they can be watched is almost like a different series. It's great. I've watch these so many times and tried them all. Give it a shot. Doesn't have to be on camera of course. Just personal enjoyment

When I watched this in theaters, it was long before the prequel trilogy and Hayden Christensen was a 2-year-old toddler. The actor who played the unmasked Darth Vader during the death scene, Sebastian Shaw, also portrayed a "middle-aged" looking Anakin Skywalker with a dad bod. Of course, upon the release of the prequel trilogy it made sense to use actor Hayden Christensen in that shot for continuity's sake. Here is a link to the original shot with Sebastian Shaw: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3S2auEHR4rg.html

I Was 13 Years old in 1977 when I saw Star wars and 16 Years old in 1980 when I saw The Empire Strikes Back. I was 19 Years old in 1983 when I saw Return of the Jedi in the Movie Theatre. Everyone was shocked and gasped when it was revealed that Princess Leia and Luke were brother and Sister. Everyone in the movie Theatre cheered when Darth Vader turned on the Emperor. In the original darth Vader did not scream no. he just grabbed the Emperor. Anakin Skywalker was the Jedi that returned. Luke hinted at it when he told the emperor that he was a Jedi like his father before him. In the original version the force ghost of Anakin was the older Actor who played Anakin.

Luke's first light saber was blue. He didn't build it though. A light saber is powered by Kyber crystals. Those crystals are alive. The color of the blade depends on the relationship between the Force user that tames the crystal and the crystal itself. Blue is a typical Jedi Knight. They are generally better with a light saber than they are with the Force. Green is when a Force user is much more powerful with the Force than they are with a light saber. Then there are the red light sabers. Sith do not build their own light sabers. They must take a light saber in combat by killing the Jedi that built it. The Kyber crystals don't want to serve the Dark Side so the Sith have to force them to against their will. This causes continuous pain for the Kyber crystals powering the saber. The blade appears red because of that pain. It's like the Kyber crystals are bleeding. Someday, I hope you get to see a white light saber. They are Kyber crystals that have been rescued from a Sith and healed with the Force. There are a few other colors. You should look into them someday but I am afraid looking into it now might lead to some spoilers. I'd wait.

Anger is a red emotion that clouds a person's judgment. Anger and hatred often are accompanied with each other and are very strong emotions. The training of a Jedi is not to rid themselves of anger and hatred but to learn how to focus their mental state and not allow their emotions to control their actions or override their judgement.

The reason that Obi-Wan lied in the first film is that he didn't actually lie, lemme explain. When George wrote the first film he didn't intend for Vader to be Luke's father. It was supposed to be exactly as Obi-Wan said, Vader killed Luke's father when they were both apprentices of Obi-Wan & Luke's story arc was going to be a revenge thing. At some point during writing the second movie though, George & Larry (Kazdan) decided on putting in the twist. That's why he had to do a little work to retcon what Obi-Wan said in the first movie.
@toddkurzbard
@toddkurzbard 8 месяцев назад
That part was a BAD retcon. I realize Lucas kind of painted himself into a corner, but that "different point of view" bullsh*t made Obi-Wan look to me like he had been caught in a bold-face lie, and he was struggling to come up with an excuse to cover his @ss. I've said since then that, at that moment, if I were Luke, I'd have looked at the old liar and said, "You've been lying to me the whole f*cking time, and the only thing you can say is this bulls*t excuse? F*ck you, old man. My dad was right. I'm going to ring him up and join him.". Since that moment, my faith in Obi-Wan was destroyed, and I can't stand the manipulative old bastard. When I see him in the prequels or other media, I see him as "that lying sack of sh*t". Yeah, I know there was a deleted scene absolving Obi-Wan of the "crime", but, sorry, that old first reaction still lives on in my head. "A certain point of view". What smug sh*t.

@@toddkurzbard If one looks at Episodes IV, V and VI, it becomes clear that there were at least four people who knew the truth of who Vader was, and had the opportunity to tell Luke, and didn't: Obi-Wan, Yoda, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. So, either they all arrived at the same decision (not to tell Luke) independently, or one of them came up with the idea, and the others agreed to it. My read is: Not wanting to have Luke tempted to go to the Dark Side may have been part of it, but a small part, if it were any part at all. The larger part, was to protect Luke from being destroyed emotionally/psychologically. "Yeah, your father is alive... and he's one of the most evil men who ever lived, responsible for thousands, perhaps millions of deaths, and who led an attack against the Jedi that killed most of them, and he's insanely powerful, second only to the Emperor." Owen, and Beru and Obi-Wan and Yoda are all sober, trustworthy, responsible people. They ALL decided to shield young Luke from this truth, because almost no one would have been able to handle a truth like that. Sometimes, good people have to lie in the service of a greater good. Luke's innocence WAS worth protecting. Who says so? The people who knew him best, and the people who took it upon themselves to protect him.
@MsAppassionata
@MsAppassionata 7 месяцев назад
@@tranya327 I’m inclined to agree with you. I thought he did it to protect Luke, as well as prevent him from going over to the Emperor’s side. They had already trusted one Jedi apprentice, and that didn’t work out too well, so perhaps they were more reluctant to do the same thing for the son.

The Force isn't all-powerful. It doesn't make a person omniscient. This is a problem with the newer movies where everything is basically attributed to "The Force did it". Nothing has to make sense anymore, if the plot needs a character to know something, it's as easy as saying "I sensed it through the Force".

Yes, Leia and Luke being siblings is why Luke was able to telepathically contact Leia at the end of _The Empire Strikes Back._ The reason Kenobi and Yoda didn't tell Luke about Vader being his father was because they were concerned that he might've chosen to seek out his father to reunite with him, and thus would've been lost to the Dark Side. Luke's Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru also knew the truth, but withheld it from him for the same reason. It was simply too dangerous for a young, naïve Luke to know the truth. He would've had no understanding of the Force or the Dark Side.

A lot of elements in Star Wars are based on Far East religions and philosophies, like Zen Buddhism and Taoism. Lucas was a fan of Japanese cinema, a lot of the character names sound slightly Asian, and at one point, he even contemplated using an all-Asian cast. In the Star Wars mythology, Jedi are a lot like Buddhist monks crossed with the Knights of the Round Table. They serve a higher cause and are trained to practice detachment. This is something a lot of people misunderstand. Having detachment isn't the same as not having feelings. And it doesn't mean you can't feel love for people and things. But you have to be ready and willing to let go of them when the time inevitably comes. This is straight out of Buddhism, the idea of practicing detachment because attachment is the root of suffering. The idea isn't to become an unfeeling, unfazed person, it's that our clinging to things causes our suffering. To form such an attachment to something that you cling to it isn't healthy. It's a difficult but not impossible thing to practice.

So, it’s never said in the films, but I’ve always viewed the Dark Side of the force as something akin to a drug addiction crossed with a spiritual cancer. Tapping into the dark side is easy, and feels powerful, and it’s nature is to grow and consume, which is why Yoda and Obi-Wan described it as “dominating” your destiny. Unfortunately, as history shows, fear, anger, and hatred are the easiest emotions to exploit and manipulate.
@toddkurzbard

I've always viewed it as, there is NO "Dark Side" OR "Light Side". The intent of it's user is what makes it look like "dark" or "light". If I use it for good, altruistic reasons, it is the "Light Side". If I then destroy a planet, it is now the "Dark Side". No division, the force is what the user uses it as.

Remember that the only time Leia actually kissed Luke was on Hoth only to piss off Han and make him jealous. All other were just pecks. There were supposed to be another character that should be his sister and she should have a trilogy of her own, but at the time shooting Return of the Jedi George Lucas was going thru a difficult divorce, and he and Spielberg was working on Indiana Jones and the temple of doom as well so he felt drained and decided to end the Skywalker saga there and scripted in Leia as his sister with all the awkward twists and turns.

Luke couldn't kill the emperor because it's not the way of a Jedi, Jedi can't act out of emotion and can't attack unarmed. The Emperor was looking for a replacement for Darth Vader as his apprentice, and the Emperor and Vader are members of the Sith Order (opposition to the Jedi Order in some way), who have existed for many thousands of years according to the Rule of Two, which states that there can only be two Sith - the master and the apprentice, a master to embody the power of the dark side, and a apprentice to reach out to him, when a apprentice becomes stronger than a master, he challenges him, kills him and takes his place, taking a new apprentice, the Emperor was simultaneously looking for a replacement for Vader with someone younger and more powerful and he was afraid of him, because Vader could find himself a secret disciple and try to kill the Emperor by taking his place. By the way, in the very name of Darth Vader, Darth is the title of a member of the Order of the Sith, so for example the emperor has the name Darth Sidious, but you will learn more about it in the prequels You may also notice that the Jedi and the Sith have different force abilities, if in general terms, the Jedi use defensive abilities that can rarely cause direct damage, while the Sith use dark side abilities, such as force strangulation, force lightning. In theory, the Jedi can use them too, but this means direct use of the dark side, which will intoxicate the mind and after which it is difficult to stop, not to mention that it goes against the Jedi code

The dark side is like a drug, once you take that first drop, it's addictive and powerful. The Emperor knows this, that's why he wanted to get Luke to use his anger, fear and hate to fuel his decision-making. Giving in, even a little bit is dangerous, because once you justify using your aggression and negative emotions to make you more powerful, even "for the greater good" you will eventually begin unwittingly create scenarios that cause more pain and misery that ultimately just exist to fuel your negative emotions further. It's a never-ending spiral of bad decision-making.

Keep in mind that the next film takes place before the Empire, so there is no emperor and no rebel alliance. Instead, the ruling government is the Republic, which is a representative democracy. Not all the planets in the galaxy are part of the Repubilc, but those that are send senators to the capital to represent them in the senate. The leader of the senate is the Supreme Chancellor, kind of like the president or prime minister of the galaxy. There is no military because there's been peace for 1,000 years. Instead, the peace is kept by the Jedi Knights, who serve the Republic, but exist apart from it with its own rules and traditions. Centuries before, they had defeated their ancient enemy, the Dark Lords of the Sith, who used the dark side of the Force to try to conquer the galaxy. It's believed that the Jedi completely exterminated the Sith. By the time of Ep.1, the senate has become corrupt and ineffective. Corporations are so wealthy and powerful that they have their own members of congress, who manipulate the laws to their advantage while the voices of the people go unheard. One of these corporations is the Trade Federation, which controls most of the trade routes through the galaxy. They are the apparent villains of the film, but are secretly in cahoots with a dark shadowy figure pulling the strings from behind the scenes, whom not even the Jedi are aware of. Most of this stuff can be construed from the plot, other things are not addressed at all. After 3 movies of rebels vs. empire, some people are distracted trying to understand the new situation, and it pulls them out of the movie.

Not claiming Jedi Master or Star wars efficianado, but I always felt that Obi-Wan was playing a deeper game with Luke in regards to who his father was. He lied in the beginning to make it look like Darth had killed his father and then sacrifice himself so that Luke would watch Darth Vader kill him, so that when he did gain the knowledge that he was his father, he would not be susceptible to hero worship with his father and follow him to the dark side. I believe this is what he meant when he told Darth Vader. If he's struck him down he would become more powerful than he could understand.

Originally, light saber colors didn't mean anything. It was a choice and Jedi could have what ever color they wanted (even red) when they made their saber. When episode 6 was made, Luke's light saber became green so that it would show up better against the blue sky for the fight scene on Tatooine. Now the colors have meaning and luke's green saber has more meaning that it used too. I won't spoil it for you as you discover more about the Star Wars universe, but red does mean evil and the blue and green you saw are good. When going through the movies, light saber color really doesn't matter all that much as a whole (they don't explain it or depend on you knowing about it), but it would make more sense to look it up after watching the prequel trilogy if you want to know more. You see all the colors, and how they are made in the Clone Wars animated series so if you want to watch that someday (I recommend it, it's a great story) knowing what the light saber colors mean when seeing the different characters will make a lot of sense, but not really required with blue and green the far more common colors you'll see.

The darkside amflies anger.
@YezaOutcast
@YezaOutcast 6 месяцев назад
the thing with the dark side and the anger is that a jedi should (through his training and usually they all start training at a very young age) not build any dependencies on others. everything that one could fear to loose should be purged from a jedi's life. fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to suffering. that are yodas words. strong dependencies on others could be your downfalls, because of the emotions attached to these dependencies. sith (the dark side users) are usually very strong on their feelings and passions. that is what gives them power. strong emotions and passions. a jedi is the opposite. clear of mind, aloof and only driven by seeking knowledge and helping others. they're a bit like buddhist monks.

@williamjones6031
@williamjones6031 8 месяцев назад
1. Best guess is that Han was Jabba's "trophy" for about a year and a half before the rescue. 2. Vader discovered Leia as Luke's sister because he could feel it in Luke. Luke didn't know that until just before then. 3. Luke's light saber is green because he lost his old one along with his hand so they decided to make it green because it worked better in the desert background landscape. 4. Everybody is freaking out because Luke and Leia kissed mostly because she was trying to piss off Han. They didn't know they are related. 5. The "I love you. I know" was written into the script to get Leia the shot to say it to Han. 6. This was Warrick Davis'/Lead Ewok first acting gig. He was only 13. Willow is his lead with Val Kilmer and worth a first time/share.😎 7. Awesome camera work with the race through the forest. Nobody in their right mind would go that fast. 8. A little corn. Hans' reaction to Leia telling him Luke is her brother. 9. Jedi is plural. With Luke and Leia leading the way they can reestablish the Jedi back into the galaxy. 10. Ford wanted Han to die in this episode. 11. This is the best of the original 6 George Lucas Star Wars. After this he sold it to Disney, and everything changed. Sadly

Blue lightsaber indicated a Jedi Guardian, a Jedi who used the Force on a more physical level. Green indicated a Jedi Consular, a Jedi who preferred to reflect on the mysteries of the Force and fight the dark side at its heart.

All Jedi make their own light sabers. The coolers mean different things depending on what kind of Jedi you are. Basic sleep blue green mean good . Red means evil . There are a few other but they are in the extended universe.

But Anakin and Vader are not the same person. You'll understand as you see more of the saga, but they are distinctly different people. Obi-Wan didn't lie. What he said was true, even if from a certain point of view.

Return of the Jedi was, and is, the best part of the franchise, once you get past the Ewoks. 🙂 There have been at least two remasters after the original theatrical release: The first replaced the models and optical effects of the original edition with CGI, and the second changed the scene at the end of Yoda, Obi Wan, and Anakin to use the same actor who played Anakin in episodes 2 and 3. Now that you've seen the original trilogy, consider watching Rogue One. The plot of that movie falls between episodes 3 and 4. You'll want to watch New Hope again right after, please plan accordingly. It's also a gorgeous film in its own right. George Lucas planned to make the third trilogy around the 2010's, and amazingly they were made approximately to that schedule even though Lucas sold his production company to Disney and had no association with them. The members of the original cast were invited to return, and they agreed. And they appeared in episode 7.

Don't know how many times I've seen all the rest let alone even watch all the reactions that I've seen for the 9 no 10 movies. Now 1. 2. 3 Then Rogue 1. If you must watch so long after 3 after rogue One... meh Then 7, 8, 9 They are better than the haters say they are

I'm going to defend obi here. Did you see the disgust on Leia's face when she found out that vader was Luke's father? Then she finds out that he is her father as well. To come right out and say that the iron fist of the Emperor that has destroyed the Jedi and sewn terror, war and death across the Galaxy for the last 20 years is your daddy is a hard pill to swallow all at once.

Darth Vader and the emperor aka Dath Sidious aren't the Jedi, they are the Sith Sith is an order of forceusers, who use the force through their emotions and use it for their own wishes, they try to take full freedom through it, the jedi is bloked all emotions and serve the force as monks, so all difference between sith and jedi is philosophy of ways of using the force, and the force influence both sides, so siths is becomes super emotionals and not very clean mide mans, and jedis becomes very closed and chained by their dogmatism The Sith Code Peace is a lie, there is only passion Through passion, I gain strength Through strength, I gain power Through power, I gain victory Through victory, my chains are broken The Force shall free me. The Jedi Code. There is no emotion, there is peace There is no ignorance, there is the knowledge There is no passion, there is no serenity There is no chaos, there is harmony There is no death, there is the Force Firstly, the Sith are a very ancient order, initially before the Jedi and the Sith there was a single order of force-sensitive beings who practiced a balance between the two sides of the force, which were named after the two moons of the planet on which this order existed, one was of dark stone, the other of light, thus the light and dark sides of the force appeared, which symbolized two different aspects of the force, emotional and emotionless. So after that, the council of this order decided to prohibit the interpretation of the force through aspects of the dark side and from the balance, they came only to the light side, so the Jedi Order was born, and the Sith appeared from the apostates of the order, expelled from it at the time of rejection of the dark side, they were forced to hide from the Jedi in unknown regions, where they found the planet Korriban, which was inhabited by a race of red-skinned humanoids who called themselves the Sith, they had a very strong connection with the dark side, so these apostates led the indigenous the people of this planet assimilated among them and began to rule, calling themselves the Sith Lords, so their order was born, which was the opposition to the Jedi Order thirdly, the Jedi are not exactly good in the first instance, they are bound by the dogmas of the order and the laws of a largely corrupt republic, a lot of things happened through the fault of the Jedi that will lead to the birth of the empire Oh, yeah, definitely, more information about the Sith, early in the days of the old Republic, over 3000 years before the events of the film, the Sith were as much as the Jedi and their order functioned as had many temples and members and etc., also there were two huge intergalactic state, the Republic and the Sith Empire, each of which had their pros and cons, but unlike the Jedi who lead an ascetic way of life, directly ruled by the Sith Empire, the Emperor was a member and head of the order, so in those days, not all Sith held the title "Darth", is not even considered by the lords, only members of the dark Council, the analogue of the Jedi Council, was the Sith names and the title Darth (Darth Nox, Darth Tenebrous, Darth Marr, Darth Baras), but after he was born Sith, who was called the Darth Bane, he studied the history of the order and realized that all the problems of the Sith was due to their lust for power and eternal betrayals for the sake of power and strength, which pushed their dark side and who condemned the whole military of the company and took the best of them, so Darth Bane came up with the rule of two, which was that there should be only two survivors of the Sith the teacher and the student, the teacher, the power to bring the pupil to her to pull when the student surpasses the master, he must kill him to take his place, thus the order is constantly evolving unlike the Jedi, who with the passage of time were stagnant, creating this rule, Darth Bane gathered all the members of the order of Sith lords to meet and staged the attack, after killing them all, the Sith Empire in the time it collapsed under its own weight and under the attacks of the Republic and the Sith were hunted down and exterminated the Jedi, after the attack, Darth Bane went underground, old temples were abandoned and the sith Empire has fallen, so the Jedi decided that the Sith were all destroyed, unaware that the order was reformed and still operates, whose main objective is the revival of the Empire and revenge for the collapse of the Jedi order and the time when the Sith were hunted down and slaughtered by the jedi
