What is your favorite horror movie which has come out this year(2022)? The Black Phone is definitely one of the best!

Black phone for sure! The plot was a breath of fresh air and the kids (Gwendoline especially) acted their SOCKS OFF. Also I don't think Ethan Hawke will not sound like the grabber to me moving forward for a hot minute because that voice is too unique 😅 He's on fire lately, though!

Smile is my favorite that i've seen so far. The Black Phone is great too, but I'm really starting to get tired of this trend that every movie in every genre HAS to have all these catchy quips and comic relief and plucky characters. It feels like Marvel is just infecting the entire film industry. It's actually refreshing to have something that's serious and bleak nearly 100% of the way through.

All the kids in this movie deserve awards, idk where they found them, but you know the acting and writing is good when you feel so deeply for characters like Robin despite him having very little actual screen time. I don't necessarily think this movie should be called a "horror" but it's a fantastic thriller. Hawke did wonderfully as the Grabber, and I loved the way the movie was shot, filmed, etc.

@@cflournoy1529 I know!! I was so heartbroken about Robin; they did a great job of giving us a good overview of their relationship and making us get attached in such little time. But I do think Robin's death was symbolically necessary. I think it represented the death of the innocent part of Finn's childhood, but also forced him to stand up for himself because Robin literally can't anymore.

Also Finn's arm is mint *neck snap* gave me so much life, lool. The order of kid's on the phone there was perfection. Lastly, did anyone notice the way Finn killed the Grabber was the same position Robin had Moose in during their fight. The only difference is Finn was sitting instead of standing.

This movie is so good, I think one of the best parts is how smart Finn is, actually all the kids, Finn's first thought upon waking up after being kidnapped was to stay calm and find a way out, he only let himself feel it when he thought he was out of options. And not only did he use EVERYTHING the other kids showed him, but ended up killing him too. Also the best scene is when he snaps the neck and Bruce goes, "Finn's arm is Mint." Then he dies. XD I like to imagine all the other kids were standing there watching Finn beat up the grabber and cheering him on, we just couldn't see them.

So my mom had a really good theory about the mother in the movie she said that the mom, while also having the same gift as the daughter, might have also had schizophrenia that's why they said the voices made her do bad things.
@michelle6337
@michelle6337 Год назад
I think what makes this movie so great is the subtleties in the writing. It doesn't feel like it's shoving information down your throat to ensure you understand the subtext. Like they never explicitly say that Finn also has a gift like his mom which is why he can see the dead kids, except for a quick throwaway line by Bruce about how "it rang but we couldn't hear it" and the dad's "Same goes for you" after the belt scene. And the reason Gwen only saw the house where the bodies were buried was because she was able to connect to the dead kids too. And I really liked that none of the dead kids motivations (with maybe the exception of Robin) was to save Finn, but instead to make sure the Grabber was caught. I just felt like that was a more believable motivation than benevolent dead teenagers. And none of the kids escape routes worked solo until Finn put them all together. Also, the nods throughout the movie to different serial killers (Jeffrey Dahmer had a victim escape, Ted Bundy used ruses to lure victims, John Wayne Gacy literally dressed up like a clown and murdered young boys, even the dog Samson could be a reference to the Son of Sam killer).
@JennyAnn
@JennyAnn Год назад
Even one of the victims, Billy the Paperboy, was likely a nod to an actual missing person's case: Johnny Gosch was a paperboy who went missing while on his route with his dog, and though his dog was found, his disappearance was never solved.

When Finney kills The Grabber he use the same method Robin used when he was beating the bully in the schoolyard. And in the movie this makes you think that Finney learned that after watching his friend doing it. Now, in the short story Robin doesn't exist, but here how the scene is written: "He sat up, meant to club Albert with the receiver again, *but then his hands did something else instead* . He put the wire around the fat man's throat and pulled tight, crossing his wrists behind Al's neck." Almost like Finney didnt expect himself to choke The Grabber the way he did, and this made me think of another possibility regarding the movie. You can see that some of the ghosts are capable of moving things like the water bottle on the ground, so what if when Finney took the phone it was actually Robin's hands that took control of Finney's and wrap the wire around him both choking The Grabber to death?

me too, except it brought back bad memories of my family where beatings were a regular thing, my parents had 5 holes drilled in their paddle, 1 for each of us. said it gave it less wind resistance, lining up 1 after another.. i was a kid in the mid 80s when it was a-ok to beat your kids, just remember to wear long sleeve shirts n no shorts, and remember, you were clumsy and fell. one thing i identified with is the fact that no matter how many or hard your beaten, you still love them. so to me this movie was a little close to home as my little sister was abducted, this was during times when people were realizing anyone could be a child killer. the local news, sheriff etc came out and it was so awful, but luckily she was let go the next day. she said they just pushed her out of their car. she was like 5 and i was 9. cops had no clue. then all the local kids were fingerprinted and i was told later it was to make identifying remains easier. i dearly love my sis, and were very close, she can be a handful, very headstrong (like gwen) its a lil joke between us that they didnt know what they were in for when they took her and just wanted her away from them, lol. i love you bre.

This movie creeped me out bigtime and made me so scared the whole time. Especially being a mother. Also it's not confirmed why the Grabber is broken. Whether it was due to his own child abuse OR if he had a normal childhood & still ended up broken (Which is even scarier, when you think about it). It's not confirmed because like Ethan Hawke said himself, "because it doesn't matter why he's broken, what matters is he IS broken." The movie shows the Grabber was a sick paedophile that murders his victims after they play his "naughty boy" game. They made a few subtle signs to show what he was, hence why he was shirtless, & why one victim mentions the grabbers "favourite" part of naughty boy etc. Also noticed that the Grabber did, in fact pick certain types of kids. The Grabber only picks boys and notice how they all have long hair, that he can play with.😖

Not sure if I misunderstood you but this wasn't based a short story written by Stephen King. This was written by his son, Joe Hill. You can clearly see his style is super similar to his dad's and while I was watching it in the movie theater it screamed "STEPHEN KING!" to me and I was confused when I saw Joe Hill but then it makes sense when I realized it was his son. And for how accurate is to the book, it's pretty spot on but they add the visions from her sister (once you think about it they really don't add anything to the movie besides the family drama haha, Finn would have still escaped), Ethan Hawke's is supposed to be a big fat man, the story ends with Finn putting the phone on the grabber's ear and I don't remember if the brother is there but overall almost every line is direct from the book. All the additions they made well pretty well done to make the story longer and still made the short story justice

As someone who is almost the exact same age as the kids (slightly closer to Gwen than Finney) you have no idea how accurate this movie is to the time. Even the stuff you questioned… like would the town be so naive. The answer is “yes”, absolutely. I don’t know who’s responsible for it… King, the screenplay writer, the director, I don’t know. But this is one of the best movies ever as far as the “background”, which for those of us who know what it should be like, is extremely effective for drawing us in. It makes it so realistic. It’s an incredible movie.

Did someone think the grabber might have multi-personality disorder? Notices how his voice pitch changes and how he contradicts himself, first saying that he should kill the kid because he scratched him, then he says to him that he would never do something he wouldn't like, despite already have done it when he took him against his will. Gwen's father said that her mother had the same abilities as her, but instead of gwen, at some point she started to hearing things and said they were voices telling her to do stuff, so many people think the grabber also somehow possesses similar power to gwen and finney, but he probably ended up like gwen's mother. From what psychiatrists said, the multi-personality disorder comes from child abuse, and we are not talking about just hitting a child sometimes, but they said actually real physical torture. And the grabber says that he had been there in that room when the black phone stopped working. My theory is that he was probably held captive in that basement by his parents (the basement maybe at that time it was just another room in the house) and keep being tortured, then the mind to protect himself split and create other personalities. Because the grabber says that he could hear the phone ringing but he was unable to hear anybody from the other side, I believe those voices people talking about were just the other personalities (and not the consequence of a supernatural power), talking to him, and maybe one of them, a vengeful and angry personality, is the one that convinced him to kidnap other children and hurt them recreating some parts of what his parents did to him, including the "naughty boy" game. Another proof is just after the kidnapping when he calls finney "johnny" in a mocking tone, so the grabber already knows finney's full name is john finney. But in the other scene when he bring him breakfast the grabber looks completely unsure and ask what his name is, throws the newspaper at him making him understand that he just read his name and in a very angry tone he calls him "finney", he doesn't use his first name anymore.

Gwen was an all-star, and Finn was amazing, all the actors were and you're right, truly great kid actors are sometimes hard to find. I'm still cringing from No Good Deeds. A great movie, but that little girl kept it from being a rewatch. Her visions were cool, and how she controlled it at the end to find the house, and what an epic sibling relationship. Most little sisters wouldn't go tackling and beating on guys, they'd tell someone or watch shouting. And Ethan Hawke 👏 creepy bastard award right there lol. I love how he went from being nervous about being in Sinister because he didn't want to be scared, or cursed hahaha to starring in a horror as the horror itself. And hey, this is terrifying. I only have my niece but the thought of her being gone makes me coma sick. It's frightening. King, if nothing else towards utterly creeped out can really humanize every aspect. The kids beating on each other, been there, abusive parents wasn't sensationalized, the ghosts were spooky but unlike other helpful ghost movies I've seen I liked it that they weren't "haunts" but "helps". Recommendation: The Haunting in Connecticut 2009 Case 39 2009 The hills have eyes 2006

So, there are a few really stellar King novel adaptations, but most of thr amazing King movies are based on his short stories, simply because it's nearly impossible to include the world and character building and internal monologues that are his trademark. He's had some dud books, for sure, but who wouldn't after 50 years of writing? So, basically, don't judge his books (novels) by their movies. 😊

Ok was so fun to see y’all react to this one 👏🏻 I absolutely despise horror movies because they scare me and make me paranoid 😅 but my step dad showed me this because I have kids and he said he wanted me to see the type of stuff that’s possible out there. I got soo sucked into this movie and loved it! It was done sooo well especially the phone call towards the end for the killer that just brought it all together and when he came out of the house across the street that surprised me 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 amazing movie and I see it as more of a thriller than a horror movie just with some jump scares

Stephen King's son, Joe Hill, wrote this story and their literary universes are connected through some of their books. The written version is not as clear on this point but you could say Finney shines a little bit and his sister a lot more (not as much as Danny Torrance but still enough). Joe has his own style but his dad's influence is often there.

11:22 Not gonna lie, I'm pretty unfazed when it comes to most things (horror movies, amusement park rides, nurses sticking needles into my arm when I go the hospital, etc) but that whole entire scene made me very unconfortable. I had to look away a few times. The kids in this movie were PHENOMENAL! Mad props especially to that actress playing the boy's sister. I don't know who she is but she is GOING PLACES!

This movie was so good. I love how certain details follow through in the story. Like he finds all that meat in the freezer, which he remembers to bring out for the dog to distract it. I think the only thing I don't like is how... optimistic it was between the kids and the father at the end. But all the kids in this movie were great. Normally I get so irritated with kids in movies, but here they were all realistic and well-acted and not self-aware and too smart but also not dumb.
