One of the reasons I like this movie is because of Ethan Hawk, he practically carried the movie on his shoulders with his acting. It is more scary when you see a rational person realize and accept the existence of supernatural without making it look cheesy. Good actors take horror movies to another level like Ethan Hawk in Sinster, Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring, Toni Collette in The Sixth Sense and Hereditary, Ellen Burstyn in The Exorcist and Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby.

I got bit and scratched all the time and it chased me out of the basement I don't even know how many times. I could hear it's hooves hitting the ground behind me when I was running away. This is one of my favorite horror films. Imagine the little girl, barely able to lift that heavy axe, slowly, very slowly hacking you into pieces, and you can't move because you've been drugged. Years ago (like mid 2000s) I remember watching a countdown show called the Scariest moments in Movies and Jaws took the #1 spot with its first death. The people in the show (most worked in horror) said that it was probably #1 due to the psychological horror aspect of it, it's what you don't see that makes it scary. Oh and the music of that scene is pretty iconic too. I think the fear of the unknown does tend to be a very strong fear in people.

Sinister 2 is basically the complete opposite of what made the original unique. Where the kills were eerie and creepy in the first one, the second one is basically just a gore-no. This is the scariest movie according to science. They did an experiment (from the 65 normal BMP people watching this movie have around 86, is a difference of 32% and the highest BMP was 131) is just an experiment so it varies from person to person! The full list in order is: 1. Sinister 2. Insidious 3. The Conjuring 4. Hereditary 5. Paranormal Activity 6. It Follows 7. The Conjuring 2 8. The Babadook 9. The Descent 10. I heard the filmmakers were actually struggling to come up with a title. One day the director was reviewing the Super 8 footage (I think the segment with the burning car) when someone commented "that's so sinister". Generic, but fitting I think. Also fun fact: Ethan Hawke's reactions to the Super 8 films are genuine. He hadn't seen the footage prior to filming his scenes.
@rmartinson19
@rmartinson19 6 месяцев назад
@25:10 I like that you noticed the different frame rate between the ghost children and Ethan Hawke's character. They did that by filming the whole scene with the kids moving at normal speed, while Ethan Hawke moved at double his normal pace, then they slowed it down in post-production to make it look like Hawke's character was moving at a normal pace. The fact that Ethan Hawke's movements still look smooth and natural when he was actually moving very quickly is a MASSIVE acting flex on his part, and I still scratch my head from time to time trying to work out exactly how he pulled that off.

The reason why I like Sinister is because if you take out the supernatural element, this story could easily be like a detective story. The supernatural element just fills in some gaps that cannot be explained like the motivation of the children. One example is during the argument scene, Ethan aka Elliott, is trying to justify living in the house and says something to the effect of "it's not like the family was butchered in the house with blood all over the walls." (Paraphrasing) and then when we see what happens at the end..chilling..

I like the cop in this film, I guess because he seems more down to Earth and just an all around nice guy to be around. He's not snooty, above everyone, and genuinely tries to help (which is rare for most films involving cops/ detectives). In fact I was worried he'd be offed in some way along with the family, but I'm glad he at least survived. Sure he initially wanted to join because he'd be famous once the author published his new book (wouldn't anyone?), but it changed quickly once he learned how nasty and deep the mystery was. EDIT: By cop, I meant Deputy So-and-So.

To be fair... murder houses are usually cheaper. There's a house in the town where I live. A man was going out with friends, when suddenly he was notified about an unknown car in front of his house. Enraged he ran home and there he found his wife with her secret lover in the kitchen. In a fit of rage he murdered both of them with a knife while the kids were upstairs, sleeping. I started working at a school for an internship and one of my colleagues moved into that house. But none of her neighbors dared to visit her (yet), because of what had happened in that house (even though they took the counters, the floor and everything out of the ktichen and replaced it with a new one). I can imagine that it's awful if you lived next to a man that would eventually kill two people.

Horror movies rarely freak me out but this one did the first time I watched it. I knew you guys would enjoy it. A lot of people don't like Sinister 2 but I do. The deputy returns in the sequel and I think you guys will like it. Another movie you need to check out is Sleepaway Camp. It has one of the greatest endings in movie history.

yeh this movie has some great imagery like the murder scenes were so chilling and inventive. There's a youtube vid going into the behind the scenes and tells how they actually shot those murder scenes on real 8mm film with all practical effects. It makes them feel so authentic. Like the hanging scene was real people hanging (they almost hurt the actors for real the first time and had to get a new stunt coordinator). And the swimming pool one they had someone in the pool giving the family members tied to chairs oxygen after pulling them underwater. Also had the guy as Bagool with weighted shoes i think so he's legit standing underwater as it appears on camera.

The music and sound in this movie is totally creepy! Maybe the creepiest I’ve ever heard.

The sequel is actually really good in my opinion. Even though the demon is the same, the way the story plays out is very different. Edit: also the part where the kids look slow motion. Ethan actually did his movements faster so when they slowed the kids down he looked like he was moving regular speed.

The thing I love most about the scene where he starts to call the police but then changes his mind is, yes he kind of starts wanting to see where the super 8 film murders go but also because he remembered the sheriff was completely against the type of novels he writes and didn't want him in the town so you kind of have to think about that portion of it too.

Are y’all gonna watch the sequel? It’s pretty well done! Focuses more on the kids, and deputy so-and-so is the main protagonist!

Not my personal favorite horror movie, but it's admittedly extremely creepy, filled with dread, and is the stuff of nightmares! O_O

I remember having to watch this in the cinema when I was a kid because all the other movies were 18+, and the lady at the counter said it wasn’t scary. Needless to say, I was traumatised.

That's a funny question: "WHY are we HERE?" And the dad's like, We are all gonna get rich, I'm gonna weird out, and we are all gonna get rich. If I were a guy, I guess I'd just go piss in the dryer again.

II really liked this movie I thought it was seriously trippy. James' reaction to this movie was classic. Dude, you had me rolling. If you want to see some more of Ethan Hawke as a kid actor you should check out the movie Explorers from 1985.

I saw this movie as part of the Halloween Horror night in the Cinema at the time.... 3 movies: the first one nobody took it seriously, the second one was a little bit more creepy but then this one came in after midnight as the last movie.... You could hear a pin drop in there, everyone was watching it the same way

Sinister has such a place in my memory because I was supposed to see this with a group of friends but ended up alone. They were stuck in traffic so I sat by myself through the beginning with a few people around me. They showed up later but they were freaked out like the rest but I was solid the whole time. In reality, it really really freaked me out!

watch the sequel if you like the cop! I loved him in both! The audio tracks are uncomfortably disturbing. I think it really sets this movie apart from others. It accomplishes what Insidious attempted to do with the shrill audio tracks
