Don’t be confused- Here’s the BREAKDOWN 1) The girl in beginning is at the statue of the Author of the Book she’s reading - Grand Budapest Hotel 2)Then we go to the author of the book - the statue the girl was at - and he starts to tell the story of his inspiration for the book 3) We then go to him as younger man - Jude Law - as he visited the hotel and hears the story from Zero 4) We end on the bench with the girl having just finished reading the book of what we just watched. This movie is GENIUS

It's the most extreme example of the unreliable narrator that I know. The movie is the imagination of a girl reading a book written from the memory of a decades old recounting of an old man's youth. If you want to find an excuse for your film being unrealistic, that's the way to do it. 😂

This is one of my favourite movies ♥. It's unique, hilarious and, in the end, incredibly poignant. The actors, the script, the music, the sets, the costumes, the cinematography and the direction are just fab. Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort) was nominated for an Oscar for this movie and he should have won. Saw this movie with my daughter Holly in Spain on my birthday. That's another reason it's dear to my heart.

Basically, you watched a movie about a girl reading a book whose story is the result of the author interviewing a man about the life of his mentor when he was young and working as a lobby boy in a hotel during the early 1930's. It was more or less a story about a story about a story.

The girl at the beginning and end was reading the book by the author (Tom Wilkinson) who was told a story when he was younger (Jude Law). That story, told by Zero as an old man (F. Murray Abraham), relaying his life as a Lobby Boy (Tony Revolori) at the Grand Budapest Hotel and his relationship with M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes), the concierge. The girl is considered to be the "present day" (around the time the movie was released- 2014). The Author (played by Tom Wilkenson)as he relays the story in his book to the reader is set in the 1980s. The story being told by an older Zero (F Murray Abraham) to the younger author (played by Jude Law) is set around the late 1960s, while the main story being told is set in the early 1930s. Other really good Wes Anderson movies you should see are Moonlight Kingdom, The Darjeeling Limited, and Fantastic Mr. Fox (animated movie).

I think it's 20 years earlier. The place it is set in seems to be strongly inspired by the Austrian Empire, which ended at the End of World War 1. Though later there also seem to be Nazis, which really did appear like that only in the 30s. It's all not really actual Europe, so I guess they didn't really stick to any specific years.

To really understand this film, you have to remember everything that happens in it. The thing I love the most is the framing for the story. In other words, the scenes set in the 60s, 80s and present day. You might go into this film thinking it's a simple story about a concierge and his lobby boy. That's the story Older Zero was trying to tell, when he and the hotel were all that was left of it. Because the hotel was demolished soon afterwards while the Young Writer was in South America, and we don't know what happened to Older Zero after that, the Writer was effectively the only person left who knew the story, and the only evidence was inside his head. When he wrote his book, and a copy ended in the hands of the girl in the present day, that lets you know that the story will live on. I admire how they managed to convey that. Ralph Fiennes, Saoirse Ronan and Jude Law are my three favourite stars in this movie. They are amazing.

The themes and presentation are everything in this film. There is a plot, but that's sorta beside the point. This is the film equivalent to literature versus genre fiction. Such a great film. And yeah, you'll recognize a zillion actors in his films because Anderson, like the Coen brothers can pull in every A-lister in Hollywood with just a phone call.

The narrator is hilariously complicated. The girl in the beginning is reading the book by the author, who is the old guy who shouts at his son. The book is the story about how he as a young man, played by Jude Law, met Zero, who tells him his life story. In the beginning we go down the layers from the girl reading it, to the author writing the book, him being told the story and in that story is where the movie takes place. Then going back up the layers at the end, ending with the girl finishing the book. This is one of my favourites and I'm really happy you enjoy this kind of humor. Wes Andersen isn't everyones cup of tea.

My favorite Wes Anderson film is Moonrise Kingdom, so that's one film for you to consider watching in the future.

This film is a work of genius! Ralph Fiennes is an absolute darling in it! Follow it up with In Bruges.

This is my favourite Wes Anderson film, closely followed by Fantastic Mr. Fox. I avoided FMF for years because I assumed it has going to be an americanised pap version of a Roald Dahl classic - and in a way it is BUT IT IS SO WONDERFUL IN AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT WAY. Seriously, I adore that film and fully recommend it.

Mendel(the pastry chef) wasn't Agatha's dad. She was sort of an apprentice/indentured servant. She worked for him in exchange for room and board.

I believe it wasn’t an actual or reproduction Schele rather it was done in the style of Schele specifically for the film; an artistic prop.

Funiculars are very real. They are a combination of an elevator/cable car (engine at the top) and tram. Usually two are run on the same track (to act as counterweights to each other).

wes anderson employs the story within a story framework. that way he can get away with absurdities and clunky interactions, expertly extracting comedy

Now you’ve crept down the Wes Anderson hole. You can react to any of his stuff and I’ll enjoy it.

If you haven't seen it already, you must watch "In Bruges". One of the best films ever made starring Colin Farrell, Ralph Fiennes, and Brendan Gleeson.

Watch it again. The whole movie is the girl reading the book about the Grand Budapest written by Jude Law (who was also played by the older guy with glasses at the desk at the beginning.)

I enjoyed this movie because I lived through all of the events depicted in the movie. All of the events in the movie were true. If you do a little research on those historical events and watch the movie again, you will get more out of it. I went to the University of Alabama shortly after George Wallace stood in the doorway and saw the young lady on campus from time to time. I am a Vietnam veteran, so that part meant a lot to me.
