"During the filming of Saruman's death scene, Peter Jackson gave a long list of instructions detailing the noise that he wanted Christopher Lee to make when he is stabbed in the back by Wormtongue (Brad Dourif). Lee took Jackson aside and asked him, "Have you any idea what kind of noise happens when somebody’s stabbed in the back? Because I do." Lee then made it clear that the noise that Jackson wanted Saruman to make as he died was impossible to make as all the air inside a person's lungs is driven out of their body when they are stabbed in the back. In the behind-the-scenes documentary of the Lord of the Rings production, Jackson stated that Lee then began to talk about one of his "clandestine" WWII operations, indicating that he indeed had firsthand knowledge of the kind of noise someone makes when they are stabbed in the back. During the war, Christopher Lee had served as a volunteer in the Finnish Army, before joining the British Royal Air Force as an Intelligence Officer. Jackson then allowed Lee to play the scene as he desired, making Saruman's death in Return of the King far more realistic." (Copied from "ScreenRant")
And as the late great Mr Lee played Dracula in the Hammer Studios movies back in the 60s and 70s ( Peter Cushing was usually his Van Heilsing ), Peter Jackson couldn't resist having Lee's Saurman die on a giant steak. All of us who grew up watching all those Hammer horrors were laughing as we flinched!😜🧓🧛
He does a great job of being thoroughly unlikeable! I always feel a little sorry for Denethor, his madness, brought on by the Palantir and Sauron is never really explained. He just looks weak, mad and capricious, and there was a bit more to it than that.
Yes, there's a reason John Noble gets so many extreme closeups. However, he brings a great performance to a one-dimensional jerk. Tolkien's Denethor is a much more interesting character: a powerful and effective leader of men overcome by despair for the loss of his elder son. In the book, Denethor also had a palantir (like the seeing-stone that Saruman had). Denethor was strong enough to resist being taken over by Sauron's will (as happened to Saruman), but Sauron was able to choose what Denethor would see, and what he saw was an overwhelming force directed against Gondor. Remorse for sending Faramir out to certain death caused him to abandon all interest in defending his city, and Gandalf was forced to assume his role and direct the fight. It's a shame that Peter Jackson & Co. couldn't have stuck closer to Tolkien's story line.
@@johnwalters1341 some things are harder to get over to a cinema audience. I have watched a lot of reactions and most think he is just a cowardly moron! Having read the books I knew the “truth” about Palantirs and Sauron’s will eating away at Denethor’s resolve and sanity. Probably would have added another 10 minutes of exposition, or very clever writing to explain what was going on. Shame though, because it is an interesting character story.
In the book, it much more important that Theoden does not kill Womtongue earlier, as Wormtongue throws the Palantir (crystal ball) at the party that come to talk to Saruman. Saruman also does not die here. They escape from Saruman's tower, but after months of cruelty at his hands, Wormtongue kills Saruman, cutting his throat. One thing that is not mad clear is that Denethor has his own Palantir through which he has been contending with Sauron for some time and it has driven him mad. So has gone from a poor father to a complete madman. 24:26 The Dwarves are busy fighting their own war against Sauron's forces, far away.
In defense of Eowyn being all over Aragorn: she _did_ ask him what the necklace he wore was all about, and he answered that the woman it belonged to was sailing away to the Undying Lands with the rest of her people. Keep in mind too that Aragorn's last conversation with Arwen consisted of him breaking things off with her. Can we really blame Eowyn for shooting her shot when the guy was - to her knowledge - available? Wouldn't you? 😏
In the book, Aragorn says of Eowyn, "Few other griefs amid the ill chances of this world have more bitterness and shame for a man's heart than to behold the love of a lady so fair and brave that cannot be returned."
Whew, those were some intense scenes! I'll say this much, if Pippin hadn't been too curious about the Palantir ball, then Gandalf would not have learned where the next point of attack will be especially when he mentioned about seeing a white tree that appears to be dead in the vision Sauron sent to Pippin, the same tree he saw when he entered Gondor, now the rest of the fellowship need to muster up enough men for army to fight against Sauron. Until next time.☮ and 💕
I was happy to hear you say that you were dividing this up into three parts. I enjoy your reactions, especially the little "commentary clips" you insert, that an extra one for a film I've enjoyed so much over the years, is greatly appreciated.
I'm glad you guys paced yourself through this journey. It can be very overwhelming to do all at once for some people, and I can tell you guys were able to absorb more by treating it like a series. Also, still in love with this editing. Love how you make fun of yourselves as well as what the characters are saying. You guys have a fun and chill vibe here on this channel and I've very much enjoyed watching the highlights of this trilogy with you. You guys keep it up and you'll be a big channel in no time. Can't wait to see the next two parts!
Yess we are happy we decided to split it into parts, it def allowed us to grasp more of the movie that way!! And thank you so much for the support it’s greatly appreciated!
Right on to the reaction!!!! The Second BEST thing in the universe, after watching for the FIRST time....... is getting to watch these over and over and over!!
I have been watching so many reactors since I was a teenager and now I'm a young adult. I do so because I enjoy watching with other people and getting to enjoy movies not just from my own perspective but also from theirs and their experience. There's something endearing with that for me. And genuinely you guys are really doing an awesome job, and I am enjoying your content! I can't wait for you guys to grow and explore many more shows and movies.
To answer your question regarding the dwarves, like where they are and where their armies are, they are tied up on their own as well. The enemy sent a sizeable portion of their forces to the north eastern kingdoms, where Legolas' and Gimli's kingdoms are from. They are fighting their own fight currently and are being sieged around the same time as this movie is taking place.
The edits are hysterical, y'all have great on screen chemistry and this reaction has made me laugh more than any other I've seen. Can't wait to see you guys finish this!
Frodo: "They're calling me" Dai: I don't care who is calling you! made me do an actual spit take, thanks for that laugh and for having to clean my screen
just an interesting bit : what legolas said to Gimli - war is already marching on their lands - similar to the world wars, there are skirmishes and battles taking place in many parts of middle earth - on the borders of the dwarf and elvish kingdoms further north.
Yep.. @Dai.Natreacts were commenting they need an army of Dwarves to help. In fact, in the book, Gimli's homeland (the Lonely Mountain) was attacked and besieged by an army of Easterling men. The siege was only relieved when Sauron was defeated and the Easterlings were dismayed. The Dwarves and the Men from the Kingdom of Dale then rallied to break the siege. Legolas's homeland in Mirkwood meanwhile, was also being attacked by I believe armies from the Sauron fortress of Dol Guldur. His father King Thranduil was defending there (he figures prominently in the Hobbit trilogy prequel)
People don't give the ring enough credit. It has a part of the soul of the silver tongued trickster (still of immense power) who served the fallen Valar Morgoth, who is the origin of all evil. Literally. Because of this the ring has Sauron's skill in the art of reading one's mind, desires, insecurities and all and knows exactly how to get you. 99% of peeps will eventually kill even their own children to have it. Thats what makes it all so tragic when you see good people falling to its whims. Ultimately, unless you are of the gods that Gandalf serves you have ZERO chance of forever resisting it. Also last point, it can almost subconsciously manipulate things of dark hearts so thats why Frodo always seems to be targeted first.
I know everybody rags on Pippin, but most nobody realize that in hobbit years he is still a pretty young teenager, (the youngest of the crew) and well young teens do what young teens do as we should all know. I love the character arc that these movies show as he develops. Remember what the elven queen Galadriel says to him as they are all leaving Lothlorian: "You will find your courage". So be patient with him. All's well that ends well, as they say. Love your reactions BTW. Cheers!
Love the reaction guys - such an underrated channel. You've got great personalities which are a joy to watch. Love your edits too, the hard work you put in is easy to see, it adds an extra layer of enjoyment!
Look up 'Christopher Lee', the actor that played Saurumon. He was Special Forces in WWII. When the Director told him what sound to make when being stabbed in the back by Grima, he said "Do you know what sound a man makes when he's stabbed in the back? Because I DO."
One thing the movie doesn’t explain well is why Boromir’s father acts as he does. He also has a seeing stone and ended up trying to spy on Sauron who used the stone to show his might in order to break Denethor’s will.
So basically denethor went crazy because he’d been battling the will of Sauron through a palantir (he also had one of those back stones that Saruman had) and basically sauron filled his head with fear and made him go crazy
Denethor was actually a very competent leader and battle tactician. If he had not gone insane he could have planned an effective defense for Minas Tirith.
Oooo! One of my favorites! "The Return of the Funny AF Edits"! Entertaining as always, guys, AND you have intelligent, perceptive commentary! And big-azz thermoses and shit, good grief, lol! The next two parts are, yes, even better. Def more emotional!
I've seen other movies in which when the woman offers a cup of some sort of drink to a man she likes, if he accepts the drink, it is a signal of commitment. That's why the king said to her, "I'm happy for you."
Pippin isn’t actually dumb, lol. While he is infuriating, he’s just curious and mischievous. He’s also a young hobbit. He actually solves a lot of the riddles in the books that are given to other folks in the movies. He grows up a lot and becomes Thane to the Hobbits.
Enjoying your reactions! In the book, the Stairs of Cirith Ungol are steep and difficult but not vertical; rather, they just go on for miles and miles. The Orcs of Minas Morgul send a party of 80 or more up the stairs behind Frodo and Sam; it's difficult to imagine a whole company of Orcs climbing the movie's stairs.
Minas Morgul (formerly Minas Ithil, the city of the moon) was still a vast city in Gondor as Minas Ithil and the sister city of Minas Anor (Minas Tirith), the Tower of the Sun, before it was conquered and possessed by the Nazgul
Fun fact: the ugly white Orc general was modelled after the infamous Harvey Weinstein, who almost killed the trilogy production cause he wouldn't get his way. And we all know how he's ended up. The Orc was Peter Jackson's and co middle finger to him 😂
Wow, no shit? That's astonishing, and terrifying, if he had had his way--again, in addition to all the other truly terrifying times. That's so cool, im sure Harvey knows it, and, better yet, knows that others know it, lmao! Go Peter Jackson!!
@@joescott8877 Yeah, I too found that out way later, but it's true and you can read about it online, several people have confirmed it and the adventures the trilogy production went through is also well known
Are you making the mistake of thinking Frodo is free to think and react as himself? The Ring is pressuring and manipulating him at all times - and more and more powerfully the close they get to Mr. Doom - and Gollum knows and uses this to poison his mind against Sam because he knows that Sam presents a formidable obstacle to Gollum's end goal of finally retrieving the Ring for himself.
Christopher Lee, being the og goat he was was on set while they were filming Merry and Pippin smoking making muttered cracks at them about 'Thieving Hobbits stealing my stash."
Billy Boyd (Pippen wanted to sing a song in this movie so he took a song from the books and modified it slightly and came up with the tune himself and then went to Peter Jackson with the request. Without even hearing a performance of it Jackson agreed. They filmed the scene in a single take because Jackson could tell that it couldn't have been done better.
There is a pretty fantastic "Behind the Scenes" about the actor that played Saruman (Christopher Lee) being stabbed on top of the tower. Peter Jackson (director) tells a story about how he wanted him to scream when he was stabbed but apparently Lee told him (paraphrased) "A man doesn't scream if you sneak up on him and stab him. It's more of a gasp, like the breath is being forced out of you...". Jackson goes on to say, "I know that Lee was involved in the British Secret Service during WWII so I took his word for it, told him to do what he thought was most accurate, and never questioned him again." 😅🤣 It really is crazy to think what a lot of the men in this older generation have seen or done growing up in... more violent times.
Comment on the sudden death of Saruman: "Is this movie rated R?" Actually, considering all the violence in the entire series, there's almost no blood. I can think of only one scene where bleeding is visible, and that's a wound that's critical to the story.
@@Dai.Natreacts Yep. In the books, Saruman's end doesn't happen that way, and I've seen one commenter who thought it was an homage to Christopher Lee's roles as Dracula, where a stake through the heart was the only way to kill a vampire.
"Hummanahummanahummana"😂😂😂 then the glasses girl meme cut perfect to "Gondor" threw me to orbit Lmao, had no clue it was coming either. & Dai's reaction to sauruman went from "yeah you both can get it" to "looks like i dont gotta do shit" then to "oh damn, i dont want no part of this, is this shit legal?" Lolllll.Glad y'all are doing a 3 pt. on this one. Am looking forward to 2 & 3 when they come out. Another dank ass reaction vid, keep surpassing expectations and making us all laugh with them comedy cuts XD. Fun fact: That ugly ass orc with the muffed face was made intentionally made to look like harvey weinstein. Also dropping my favorite short vid, hopefully it makes y'all laugh as hard as i did. Take care and until part 2 -Smithy of the shire. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pl41pbnPuhg.html&pp=ygUabW9tIG1hZGUgcGFuY2FrZXMgb3JpZ2luYWw%3D
23:20 haha never considered this but probably tue! Definitely seeing you saw comments on him kicking the helmet as every LOTR fan feels obligated to point out he broke his foot 😅
Fun fact: Peter Jackson did NOT like Harvey Weinstein who was originally going to be involved in the project. That super ugly leader orc’s face is based off of him 😂 😂
My man I've been checking your channel everyday, waiting. You guys feel like genuine with your reactions. But I cant watch half a movie then the other half a week later lol. Other than that keep up the good work your edits are solid and I look forward to your future projects/edits/reactions whatever u call it.
Thanks a lot , we really appreciate that!! It only has been 4 days though lol. We edit our own vids so they take time to finish. But don’t worry this next reaction is great and will be done soon. Like very soon lol
The RING lay in the river for 2500 years, waiting for anything to move it. Once the hobbits find the ring, it turns on FULL EVIL POWER to control whoever had the ring. The hobbits had NO CHANCE.....like a high school football team taking on the KC Chiefs. The RING destroyed them immediately
Yeah, looking forward to this one. Edit: Yeah, those aren't stairs at all. Good shit guys, need the rest asap lol. Edit2: Forgot to say Gandalf and the gang edit was fucken gold. Cracked me up. Thanks for sharing your work guys.
I thinks it's because it not " the finest weed from the south farthing " it's 1 reason gandalf is so fond of the Hobbits and down there it's poop butt weed
By the way.. Most of people dont know about this but Galadriel is Arwen's grandmother.. So Celebrian is Elrond's wife and Galadriel's daughter.. Also Arwen's mom.. Celebrian is the key :))
In my head, we’re cousins lol 😂 love the reaction; I read the hobbit at fourteen and was hooked. I love watching reactions to this masterpiece and I must say, your edits are A1 and has made me choke many times🤌🏾🤣! Later cousins♥️
Whoever edits does not let you two breathe when you take a sip of water LMAO. Also the edit with the thirsty music to the stone gargoyle with its tongue out had me dying. Also you were fascinated with the ugliness of that orc, the constant things you were commenting also had me dying. Loved the reaction as ever ! Also Im the resident Frodo defender - its not his fault! He does get kinda annoying but from his perspective Sam has been bullying smaegol (who frodo sees as an extension to himself) for ages when Smaegol's been helping them, and gollum made sure he was there for frodo above sam for a while, plus they have a bond Sam doesnt understand and rubbishes, so that plus the ring and exhaustion etc lets Frodo be misled unfortunately.
ik im new to the channel but when tf did nat start wearing glasses? that shit threw me off for a sec i was like who the hell is she? that transition crossed me up fr lol
One cool little detail is that Gandalf the White can't smoke very well because he hasn't done so in this new body of his. But old Gandalf the Gray can smoke with the best of em' 😂
