Whenever i think of the Pixies, i think of their hit "Here Comes Your Man", to me they fell under the 80's New Wave category ( i know people group that under different heading depending on your locale, in NYC that's what it was called ). As for my favorite alternative song of that time, too tough to call. Give me Howard Jones "No One is to Blame", The Smiths "How Soon is Now", The Cure "In Between Days", the first cd i ever bought was Echo & the Bunnymen for "Lips Like Sugar". Cat, you do this to me all the time, i can't decide LOLOLOL
Hi Cat - The Pixies were from Boston & signed to 4AD at the same time as Throwing Muses. They are considered a Post Punk band & opened for The Cure in 1988. The video is scenes from the film Trainspotting. 👍
@@davidellis5141 Never got into The Cocteau Twins--I mean, they're really good, from everything I've heard from them-but Dead Can Dance is quite possibly THE most sublime band ever recorded. Definitely a high point of the 4AD label, even to this day.
To be honest--and I'm saying this as a 50 year old Gen Xer myself--there is a TON of great experimental music being made to this day. In fact, I would argue that even more is being made today than it was back in the 1980s. The difference, however, is you won't hear much of this on the radio, because virtually every radio station in the U.S. is owned by two or three corporations (e.g., I-Heart Radio) that dictate what people can hear on the radio. Go to Spotify, Last FM, Pandora, and other online places for some truly amazing new stuff. For example, check out Thievery Corporation. Granted, they've been around for over 20 years now, but they've NEVER had commercial radio play, but their output is phenomenal. They're based in Washington, D.C., and are masters of downtempo, chill, lounge, dub, and other underground sounds. Here's a great example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q9hSCx_xmGo.html This is a live performance, which is actually inferior to their studio takes, but still amazing.
@@davidellis5141 FSOL (Future Sound of London) and The Orb were my "go to" ambient bands back in the early-to-mid 1990s. FSOL's _Life Forms_ and The Orb's _U.F.Orb_ and _The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld"are ambient dub masterpieces.
When he sinks into the carpet he's going into a Nod (so high on an opioid, he's on the brink of death) and he comes out of the Nod in the emergency room. It's an all-too-real movie about addiction, and the things in it happen to millions everyday.
The bass player, Kim Deal. started her own band. The Breeders. She was also hooked on Heroin. The early incarnation of The Breeders also had Tanya Donnely who later when on to form her own band Belly.
Kurt Cobain was heavily influenced by the Pixies and Kim Deal (The Breeders) (base player for the Pixies and making the haunting noises in this song). Charles (Pixies lead) is an industry wide - very well respected songwriter in the industry. Great tour with Weezer in 18'. Caught the Atlanta show.
The Pixies are late 80's early 90's band. I don't consider their sound typical pop synthy New Wave. Many 90's grunge bands credit Pixies as their influence like Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead. This band kept changing their style and defies any music category. I can't name a single "similar band" with the Pixies sound. Good choice. Keep on.
@@kkkwhhh totally agree it's the iconic pixies style of hard/soft/loud/slow that many 90's band tried to follow(or...actually many studio producers copied). However, for this particular song Smells Like Teen Spirit, you must listen to Killing Joke, 80's riff. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x1U1Ue_5kq8.html Familiar?
@@kkkwhhh You know your music. I do remember something about the actual original/original element of the riff going back 2 or 3 more "influences". Keep on.
They werr the band to invent or at least popularize the quiet loud quiet sound you heard from many bands in the 90's like Weezer, Nirvana, Green Day, etc.
Hey Cat. I was commenting on a few youtube music aficionados and the subject of 90's band came up. I perursed your collection of 90's stuff and I think you have "more work" to do in that area. Namely 90's pop stuff(smashmouth, hootie and the blow fish,...etc.), 90's Ska punk(Save Ferris, Mighty mighty bosstones, Dance Hall Crashers, No Doubt), 90's blues(Gin Blossoms, Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Mellon,..), 90's Riot Grrls(Sleater Kinney, Lunachicks, Veruca Salt),..to name a few. I think I've only touched on 25% of the main 90's genre. I hope you will continue your reactions....
A lot of the stuff I read about the Pixies in RU-vid comments sound like second or third hand snippets of info. Stuff like "Pixies were a HUGE influence on Nirvana." It's true that Kurt was inspired by Pixies and The Breeders, but in terms of influence, the only explicit comment he made was during his final interview with Rolling Stone. With Smells Like Teen Spirit, he was chasing the dynamic of the Pixies' dynamics. Or as it came to be known, loudQUIETloud (incidentally the name of the documentary feature from 2006). While virtually unknown in the US outside of 'college radio' during their first few years, they became quite successful in Europe. Their Brixton Academy concert in 1991, available on RU-vid, is a sight to behold. If you want the straight dope on the Pixies, it comes from the ad that Charles aka Black Francis placed for band mates when he was at UMass Amherst. They were looking for someone into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul & Mary, and they must have "no chops". They received one response, from Kim Deal, who became their bass player, despite never having played bass. She was (and is) a guitarist.
Trainspotting is so great! Love the Pixies! Here's one from the Basketball Diaries. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend. Great movie, great soundtrack, great book! This is the Jim Carrol Band!🧟 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9bOjc70f4p8.html
Pixies are pure genius ! That was the time of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nirvana... But Pixies are so intimate. Number 13 baby; Subacultcha; The Navajo Knows. Lyrics and Music... Theur Lyrics are to be deeped tasted.
You do know the song is about being strung out. Just like the movie. It is about being on drugs and how you feel being on it. I'm a Gen X. and I know all too well about it.
There must be more than a few Pixies reactions online, and they must extend beyond Where Is My Mind? Not a hit, by the by. They had some single success in the UK with Here Comes Your Man.
Okay, if you like the 4AD label, check out their centerpiece, Dead Can Dance. Here is something that showcases both of their amazing vocalists: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7lfnvnUul4A.html
Hello kat Great to see you love this song as well I prefer a more recent version (was in the film " fight club" with brad pitt ) was a version of (wheres my mind) by the telepathic teddy bears let me know what you think of it ??
