Living in LA as a teen in the 90s as a brown girl was hard. You couldn’t walk down the street without some bitch mad dogging you or a guy trying to start trouble with your man. While that time was fun it was also dangerous. Now I own a home in South Central near where the riots started and the ghetto bird flies high every night. Shots every night. I couldn’t imagine living here in the 90s.

I remember when Theo was on 92.3 back in the 90’s. Anytime I was in L.A., I would go to Coleys, a Jamaican restaurant on magnolia blvd. Pac and a lot of artists (especially those from the east coast) would go there.

I like how your sociology paper focused on the negative parts of rap songs but passed over the black empowerment messages or the black violence, or issues of poverty. I think your study was fundamentally flawed, by focusing on one aspect of rap music, instead of several types of rap music. Plus if you only used gangsta rap songs you will get a predominance of negative content. The East Coast had a more balanced content. I do agree that rap is sexist, misogynistic toward women. But the music is created by 17-25 year old men, who see women as a conquest. Who see women as a right of passage to respect from their peers. This can also be said of Metal music, rock music. If rappers were older they would have a different perspective. Plus a few years earlier rap was more conscious but that was washed away cuz it was not as profitable as more sensational Coast content entered the artform.
