Regarding the diversity... As a bisexual woman, I'm automatically put off by "OMG WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THAT THERE'S SOMEONE GAY IN THERE OMG YES" that so many booktubers feel the need to exclaim. A book shouldn't be put on a pedestal because there's a representation there, it should be put there if the writing's good, and if the characters feel real, and if it means something. Too many people praise the book only for having a diverse character, like that's the best thing since sliced bread. I'd rather remember, say, Apple, as a kind, loving and supportive character that happens to be gay, than Apple as a gay character who happens to be kind, loving and supportive. Feels better when your character's traits are, you know, actual traits. Do you like your lesbian friend because she's gay or because she's a nice person? People are putting too much accent on diversity and I've rarely heard anybody mention something important about the book other than YEAY IT'S DIVERSE. Diversity has become just a marketing point. Oh look we have a black gay transgender autistic character read it it's great it's awesome. OK, what else is there? Well we have a black gay transgender autistic character! Um I don't care? Sure it's nice to have representation and not to read only about straight white Europeans, but please make it worthwhile, and let it be about actual people, not their whatever identity. If you actually read all that: r/Fantasy has a huge list of LGBTQ+ characters, you are very welcome to check it out :D And since people frequently ask about books with characters of this and that background, recommendation threads are full of black, Asian, alien, anxious, etc. characters. It's not that there's no diversity. Books are diverse as fuck. It's just that their selling point is their actual plot.

Perfectly said! I hate when the author goes out of the way to make sure every character is a different race, sexual orientation, no idea what gender they are etc etc but they don't have any personality traits. They're basically just colors at that point

Yes! It’s usually obvious when a wealthy white author is writing about ‘diverse’ character backgrounds or struggles they aren’t familiar with in their own lives. As someone from a very mixed background, I’d honestly rather they just write what they know than put out offensive garbage just to score points. It’s starting to feel like writers are in competition to pile as many identities as they can in books or films, and the end results are just cheap pandering.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with having a preference for physical books (I am definitely one of those people), but some people have disabilities that prevent them from holding up a physical book, vision problems that make the ability to adjust text size really appealing, etc. so it kind of irks me when people say something as extreme as ebooks are “garbage”. Same when people get snobbish about audiobooks.

I agree. I'm bisexual and I've found that it's easier for me to reach a point of understanding with people I meet who have misconceptions about bisexuality if their confusion comes from lack of exposure rather than having a bunch of misinformed and ignorant ideas I have to teach them are wrong.
@HanQ28
@HanQ28 5 лет назад
They both SUCK. The latter just sucks more. And just to clarify, it’s fine for me if a particular book has no representation. But if the whole book market has minimal diversity, and the chance of me (an Asian girl) picking up a book at a bookstore and finding the protagonist to be Asian is 0.000000000001% (even though the Asian population in most Western countries is more than 1%), then that’s just plain old under-representation. I’m used to it but I hate it.

I agree about f/f books. That's in one truth across any fandoms as well. There's tons of m/m books - which is great - and everyone can name a minimum of 5 but f/f books? Not really. A lot of straight women will consume m/m content but not nearly as much of them will be down for supporting f/f.

To be honest, I’m a straight woman and I have no interest in f/f (sorry!) so I think you’re on to something. People go for relatability in their ships most of the time.
@nicilovex2787
@nicilovex2787 5 лет назад
I have to admit that I do read more m/m content and I feel like that is partially because I am attracted to boys so it’s easier to root for male same sex couples. With that being said I’m totally down to read more f/f stories I just can’t seem find any good ones.
@baticeer_
@baticeer_ 5 лет назад
I think it’s funny how the relatability thing can work bc I hear people say “as a straight woman I’m more into m/m because I like guys” but for me as a gay woman, my preferences are to m/m over m/f because even if there’s not a woman involved, I find the gay aspect of the romance to be relatable. (This isn’t a judgment call or anything, just an observation.) I do think straight women should push themselves towards trying f/f stories a little more because like surely it can’t *all* depend on whether the characters can be attractive to you, right? There are so many other elements to the relationship and to the stories so I don’t really get it. (but again, to each their own and I can’t tell people what to like obvs, I just personally find it confusing)
@nicilovex2787
@nicilovex2787 5 лет назад
baticeer Oh no for me personally it’s not all about the right gender. A bigger part of me liking romance is the chemistry between the characters. That’s the reason why I don’t read as much as f/f because I can’t seem to find any that I truly love. Like the last book I have read was about a female, bisexual main character who had a fling with a man in the beginning of the book and ended up with a girl. However, there was lack of chemistry in both relationships which is the reason I did not enjoy the read as much as the book I’m currently reading with a m/m relationship and waaaay more chemistry. I think I have expressed my feeling towards the topic in a wrong way. Whilst I do read more m/m it’s not only about me finding a male love interest more relatable. The bigger factor is the lack of chemistry I have found in most f/f books I’ve read. But I am searching for more of them as I enjoy good written romance no matter the gender. I hope that makes more sense...

My (idk if it's unpopular) opinion is that a LOT of diverse books do exist it's just that most people haven't done enough research. And if they want to read diverse books they should search for diverse authors and stop demanding others to write diverse characters.
@madelinebell5046
@madelinebell5046 4 года назад
I agree with this, not just with books but with every form of media. People complain a lot about TV shows not being diverse enough, and I'm just like... suck it up and watch The Expanse, then. Most diverse show on TV and y'all are ignoring it because it's sci-fi. 🙄

As a middle aged person I resisted Harry Potter when it came out. Then one day a seller at my local bookstore insisted that I buy it (at that time there were three paperbacks out) actually he made me buy them all and told me to bring them all back if I don't like the Philosopher's Stone (taking back sold items are not a thing in my country) so I purchased them upon his word and I finished Philosopher's Stone the same day and fell instantly in love with the whole thing. So people who are resisting just do yourselves a favour and read them all. My unpopular opinion would be that I don't like Wuthering Heights. I have tried to read it three times and couldn't come close to half of it before quitting. I don't think e-books are cheaper either (except Kindle deals)

I could tell this was going to be awesome when 'the hat' made an appearance in the first 20 seconds! So here's one of my unpopular opinions... A book doesn't have to be five stars for me to enjoy it. Sometimes I just want popcorn and not a full course meal. I also think the star rating system is waaay tipped too high. If I give a book three stars, it's a decent book and one I'd probably recommend people read. Three is 'average', five is spectacular.

@Bookswithcassandra

That was my complaint too! I saw John Green say that he thought people were underestimating how smart teenagers are, which infuriated me because I feel like he was overestimating how philosophical teenagers are and how he couldn’t let ANY of the characters (besides one, but I don’t remember if it was the mom or the dad) have an average/normal vocabulary and poeticness of language or thoughtprocess. God it made me dislike the book, even though I liked everything else

I don’t like audiobooks, because they are too easy for me to tune out, so I miss a lot of the story. I’ve tried listening at work (admittedly, not the best idea), on walks, on the treadmill at the gym, just hanging out at home, while I’m cleaning, and I can’t seem to find a way to stay involved with the story. I wish I did though, because they’re so convenient. I can get behind ebooks, though, and I’ve rediscovered my love of physical books by rediscovering my library the past few months.

I appreciate that there are books being written for teens and even more “chapter books” written for younger children. This was seriously lacking before the eighties. Also I have a lot of books but I also have a kindle. Since I am now retired, I travel more. I find it so much easier to travel with a kindle. I have tried using a phone but it is too small. The Name of the Wind and Mistborn are my favorites. 😂 To be fair with TNotW, it did take him 15 years to write the first book. I have a feeling though that the third book will (hopefully) be released around the movie and/or TV adaptations. 🤞

I agree! The Name of the Wind is my favorite book of all time. Even if the third book will never be released, I don't regeret reading it. I would rather live with the pain of waiting forever, than not know this beautiful world. For now I will continue re-reading it over and over again, coming up with theories and making animations based on the series...

It may be trash but I love reading Cassandra Clare books, especially because of the diversity. I think magnus bane is one of the most realistic bisexual characters I've read especially in the spin offs.

BookswithEmilyFox the Bollywood one is awesome. All are awesome. As far as “they’re supposed to be funny” I would say P&P sure, but not really for many of the others.. Persuasion is my favorite, Northanger Abbey I hate with my whole heart... I have read the main 6 and a couple of the small stories.

I didn't read Harry Potter when it first came out. I was in High School, was reading adult fantasy books, and wasn't interested in reading a children's book series, even if it was getting great reviews. I didn't read it until college, when it was assigned reading for a Literature course I was taking, and I loved them. I felt bad that I had snubbed them years earlier. They aren't perfect, but they are adorable, imo.

My friend only has ebooks and audiobooks. The reason is she thinks having a lot of physical books on a bookshelf looks cluttered and messy, and she would rather spend the $30 on something else. I’m fine with both everyone has their preferences.

Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson is a coming of age about a young gay girl! It’s a classic book in the genre (Not actually my favorite of her books, but I like her less accessible stuff 🙃)

The thing about Vin is before she was so into Elend i enjoyed her. If big part of her character wasn't her obsessing over Elend I would have continued to like her. But sadly wasn't like that, second book she was so annoying I wanted to stop reading. I think romance usually takes a lot out of a book that otherwise is amazing. Hence why I dislike most romances in fantasies.

I don’t think you’d like The Name of The Wind. But hoping you’ll read it soon! Agree with the diversity thing. If it’s the only thing that is being emphasized about a book, it’s probably not a good book. I like diversity in books but it’s not my main criteria? I still prefer reading a good story in general.

The reason I prefer actually highlighting in my books or writing in them (only pencil tho) and cracking the spine is the same reason why I prefer physical books. I just love acutally having like a physical memory and going back and seeing the things that I marked/... and seeing that i finished the book and kind of put a piece of myself into it. Leaving my books in perfect condition just feels boring and bland to me for some reason haha

This video made me laugh so many times, really loved how chatty you were in it! The only thing I disagree with is that how you prefer reading physical copies of bigger books books. For me, it's the exact opposite and I prefer e-books or audiobooks when reading a big book since physical copies are usually hard to carry around and even look intimidating when you see how much you have left to read!
