They did this live at the concert I attended in August - it's so fun! They did use autotune on the Cher song as a tribute to her but not the rest of it. You would like the Evolution of Michael Jackson as well.

That's one of the things we love about PTX so much, too... they're an equal-opportunity band. Everyone gets a chance to shine. Solos are assigned based on whoever's voice fits the song the best, and what kind of effect they want to create. Sometimes they will surprise you, though, once you get to know them and start to have expectations about who is going to do what. They'll throw in someone you don't expect at all, just for fun, and to show how amazingly versatile they are. Really liking your reactions, and love your "do no harm" sign-off.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair),(NOT this video) true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on RU-vid, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his RU-vid videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on RU-vid), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on RU-vid, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

"Let's see what they got" made me chuckle. Especially since I knew what was coming. Yes, it is all acapella. This group is amazing, and they are so good live as well. I would recommend looking at their catalog and pick a song that you heard on the radio that you just didn't like or were so sick of it, you couldn't stomach listening to it again. They will bring a whole new life to it with their version. When I first started listening to them, their Daft Punk Medley and their original song Love Again really blew me away. When I played Love Again for others to hear, they did not believe me that it was acapella! Subbed for more Pentatonix!! They are the reason for the resurgence of acapella.

Okay, these are the members of Pentatonix: The woman is Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado. Kirstie's range starts at the low end of alto and extends upward through coloratua soprano, the highest soprano range. And she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. The blond guy is Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. When describing a man's vocal range, the term "lyric" means that the actual range is greater than the nominal range. Scott's range starts in the middle of the bass range, on the low end, and extends through most of a normal tenor range on the high end. When the bass is soloing, Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line. The dark haired guy with the high voice is Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), natural contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over six octaves and is considered by all the other members of Pentatonix to be the best singer in the band. He's known for his ethereal high vocals, and switches seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice. These three, Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie, all grew up in Arlington, Texas. All of them were involved in community musical theater as children. That's how Kirstie met Mitch, when she was 8 or so, and they became good friends. That's also how Scott met Mitch, at about the same time, and, again, they became good friends. But somehow Kirstie and Scott's paths didn't cross until they were 14 and found themselves in the same class in high school, and, again, they became good friends. Mitch wasn't in their class - he was a year behind them - but all three of them joined choir (duh) and quickly became best friends. At some point these three formed a trio, to enter a singing contest, which, astonishingly, they didn't win. They named their trio "The Trio" and they kept it together even after the contest was over. They would frequently perform at school functions and occasionally appeared on local television. And Pentatonix fans, called pentaholics, still refer to these three as "the trio." In 2010, Scott and Kirstie graduated and each went off for their freshman year of college. Kirstie had a full ride scholarship at the University of Oklahoma, while Scott went to the University of Southern California. Scott is an extreme extrovert, so one of the first things he did was to look around for extracurricular activities where he could meet new people and make some friends. And what he found was an award winning amateur a cappella group named SoCal VoCals. Of COURSE he joined. And through SoCal VoCals he met a man named Ben Bram, who at that time was a coach on an a cappella competition show named _The Sing-Off,_ that ran on NBC. Groups would audition for the show. Those that passed the audition would appear throughout the season, with some being eliminated by the judges (a panel of three professional singers) along the way, tightening the competition. After twelve performances over the course of ten weeks, voting would be opened to the viewers. The winning band would receive $200,000 and a recording contract from Epic Records, a minor subsidiary of Sony, the sponsor of the show. When Scott heard about _The Sing-Off_ he was intrigued. Just imagine. The Trio could appear on national television, win a recording contract, and make a career for themselves doing what they loved best with the people they loved best. They need never split up! It was perfect! So he talked it over with Kirstie, and she thought it had a chance. All they needed was for Mitch to graduate and agree to the plan. So at the end of their freshman year of college Scott and Kirstie went home to Arlington, to be there for Mitch's graduation and to talk with him about Scott's plan. Meanwhile, Mitch had been having a TERRIBLE time without them. Mitch and Scott are both gay, and had both come out of the closet in high school, and Mitch's high voice was giving the high school bullies a way to engage in some gay-bashing disguised as teasing about how high his voice was. And Mitch was internalizing that bullying as being about how horrible his voice was. So he was doubtful about Scott's plan - surely no one would want to hear HIM sing, would they? But Scott and Kirstie told him that people WOULD want to hear him sing, and it was a way to get away from the bullies, and he'd be with his best friends - okay then. Mitch was in. So Scott called Ben to find out how to arrange an audition, and they ran into the first roadblock: bands were required to have at least five members to appear on _The Sing-Off._ The Trio needed two more singers and a new name. Ben suggested that they'd do well to add a rhythm section: a bass and a beatboxer. Fortunately he knew a bass he thought would be interested, which brings us to the one member of Pentatonix who ISN'T in this video, because he's no longer with the group. But since he was a member for around six years you'll need to know him if you venture further down this rabbit hole, so: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, dark haired guy with a beard, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances), but his range extends to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, for a variety of personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his RU-vid channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic For a beatboxer Ben didn't have any suggestions, no idea how to go about finding one. So, in desperation, the trio turned to RU-vid. Scott typed "beatboxer" into the search box and hit Enter. And the first hit he got was to a video that was going viral that week, of a black guy playing a cello beautifully and beatboxing at the same time. And they all said "Wow! He's the one! Let's get him!" Good idea. But how do you go about it? Is there some way to message people on RU-vid? No, there isn't, not now. But this was early 2011 and RU-vid still had a private messaging feature, so they messaged the guy: "Hey! We love your music; congrats on going viral. And we have a strange question to ask. Would you like to fly across the country to audition for an a cappella T.V. competition show with four strangers? I'll pick you up at the airport if you say yes." Somewhat to their surprise they got a response: "Normally I'd be on the next plane out; I've been in a cappella groups before and I love a cappella. But right now I'm studying for my final exams for my pre-med degree from Yale." Oh. That sounded pretty definite, they needed to find someone else. But no one else was that good; they'd have to settle for second best. And two weeks later they got another message from him: "Good news! I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly out." Scott, being a man of his word, picked him up at the airport. The five of them met for the first time the day before the audition. Mitch had to skip his high school graduation ceremony to attend the audition, but they passed. They were going to appear on season 3 of _The Sing-Off._ This brings us to the guy in the white jacket and blue shirt in the opening scene of this video, where you can see all five of them: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He's been classically trained since childhood on piano, saxophone, and cello. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He has a pre-med degree from Yale and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional musician instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place. The final member of Pentatonix is the other black guy, Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), who joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018, depending on how you figure it. Matt is another lyric bass. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix, Matt is also the youngest member, and I'm told that bass voices improve with age. Judging by some recent live streams I've seen Matt isn't quite down to basso profundo levels yet, but on his high end he gets near the top of a normal tenor range. Yes, Pentatonix won the third season of _The Sing-Off,_ and almost immediately ran into further problems, which I will save for another day. For now I'll just say that they are the only a cappella group to have ever won a Grammy, except they've actually won THREE Grammys. The are also the only a cappella group with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Scott recently got married, and is posting a lot of videos of his husband, Mark Manio Hoying, looking at him adoringly (or Scott looking at Mark adoringly, or both) and of the two of them kissing. Kirstie gave birth to her first child, a daughter, last June, and is engaged to her baby's father. Matt and Kevin are both married and Kevin has a little girl. And Mitch finally seems to be comfortable in his own body.

Pentatonix was originally formed by Mitch the one with the mustache , Kirsten & Scott the tall blonde. They went to school together in Arlington Texas. Avi Kaplan the original Bass left the group in 2017 and Matt came on board the same year. They found Kevin the beat-boxer on RU-vid when they wanted to be on the show the Sing Off and needed a beat-boxer. Kevin is known for his Cello Boxing. Anyway they won the Sing Off back in 2010 or 2011 and have been going strong ever since. Every once in awhile Kevin will play the Cello in some songs while he is beat-boxing. That would be the only instrument. They are truly something to see in concert, Thursday can't come fast enough.

Not sure if you were a fan of Daft Punk music, but their Daft Punk medley is amazing as well. It also won them a Grammy. Hell, Even if you're not very familiar with Daft Punk, you can still be blown away like I was. Definitely worth the watch! If you do check it out, you will notice the one member change they have had over the years. Matt, who started off the Cher song took over as the bass singer in 2017 after the original bass singer, Avi, left for personal reasons. He now has his own solo career. While some of the others will change their looks often, that is the only member change they've had. And they did use auto tune for the Cher song in order to pay homage. When they sing this live they obviously don't use it, but they attempt to distort their voice to make it sound close.

If you like the 90s and Guitars you should check out Ren he has lots of 90s refreances in alllot of his songs Hes also a musical genius & a great storyteller Is really hard to place him But you like Johnny Cash and REN holds your attention with just himself a guitar like Jhonny Could lf you choose too down the REN rabbit hole buckle your seatbelt. Hes just blowing up His new album is comming out October i think the 14th anyway hes right behind The Rolling Stones pre orders right now Hes a independent artist who does everything himself no publicity just on word of mouth of on line music community. I would start where most people have His break out video HI REN.

A lot of Pentatonix you will enjoy. All A cappella ( unless you see a cello or a violin) They perforn this medley live. They all sing amazingly and their beatboxer/ human 808 Kevin is the best. Subscribed to see more PTX. Try Bohemian Rhapsody, Jolene, Amazing Grace, Can't Hold Us, Evolution of Michael Jackson

This group is an all "a cappella" group. That means all vocal, no instruments. In this medley the ONLY instrument they used was the autotune on Cher's song. Other than that all the drums, guitars, and other percussive sounds are done with their vocals. They are an AMAZING group. You should really check out more of their stuff because you might never see this level of talent again. I should mention there are a few other a cappella groups right now that come very close to this level of talent, such as Home Free, Voice Play, Voctave. These four groups are literally the top four. There are a few others that are pretty good but on a ten wrung ladder PTX and Home Free seem to be #1 & 2 with the others being on wrung four and everybody else is somewhere around 7 -10, in my opinion. Anyway the more songs of PTX and HF you do the more followers you will get 'cause there are a LOT of Pentaholics and Home Fries out there. Enjoy the journey down the "a cappella rabbit hole"

Yes, all vocals. Some songs are graced by Kevin cello boxing instead of only beatboxing. Any song is good. They have a catalog of several hundred - both covers and originals. Make sure you post them for the holidays. Imo they own Christmas. Annual Christmas concerts are phenomenal.

❤ Hi welcome to your newest rabbit hole!! LOL 😅 Be sure to read all of 'alan-freeman'. He has the best written history of PTX that I have seen! All you need to know is in his post!! For recommendations; I would definitely watch Hallelujah (with Avi as bass) and The Sound of Silence (with Matt as the bass). They are all well show cased in those two videos. Then everyone needs their mind blown 🤯 by Bohemian Rhapsody!! 😅 In addition to these covers, or upgrades as we call them, they also have an ever growing catalog of original songs as well. One of my favorite originals is SING. It's really upbeat and fun! 😊❤❤

They really are all that & then some aren't they. Such an awesome medley! The medley reminds me of Anthony Vincent's work. Except he likes to sing one song in the styles of say 20 different artists. For instance, the ever popular metal song by System of a Down called Chop Suey in the styles & voices of the Beach Boys, the Rat Pack, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Cher, .. (i actually forget who, so i gave examples). He has a ton of 20 second songs to choose from, but i gotta tell ya, while its common for regular songs to be sung heavy metal, its really uncommon to hear a heavy metal song sung in the style of the Supremes. Crazy fun. I hope you get a chance to sort through his list. If Im not mistaken, even the used to be decent Rolling Stone magazine gave him a winning article years ago. Well gosh, now I understand why family wont let me talk about music. I can't stop. My bad. I apologize for running on so much. Theyre just all so good in different exciting ways. I like your reactions & look forward to hearing more, Dan or not. But, I'll be quiet as a mouse from here on out. Music rocks!!

Pentatonix is totally a capella. If they use an instrument,,it will be shown All Are superb singers and musicians. They don't record anything they can't perform liv! They are even better with an audience, With regard as to who sing, they decide together. They ;eave all egos at the door. They have been together for 13 years with on member change. They have a huge catalog of both originala and aare famous for the Christmas music. Their name are as follows Scott Hoying, the tall blond who has a range from bass to tenor; Mitch Grassi. the dark haired gentleman with the mustache has a range from low baritone to very high soprano(counter tenor), Kirstie Malnado, the young lad is a mezzo-soprano ,who sings from alto to almost as hih as Mitch, Matt Sallee, the base whose ranf is from bass to second tenor, and Kevin Ollusola, the beat-boxer who also sings(tenor). is a classically trained cellist and saxophonist as waell a pre-med graduate from Yale. Kevin sometimes plays the cello and beat boxes at the same time. Their original bass singer the group was Avi Kaplan. He left the group six yeas afer they began due to burnout and family problee.s / HHe now has thriving solo career. The great theing about this group is tha they are still as nice as the teenagers/college students that they were when they began. Enjoy ! They sing almost every kind of music and usually it's better than the original.

There most certainly IS music. They're singing; that's called "music." What you want to say is that there are no instruments, and that would be correct. This is all their own voices and bodies, except for a bit of autotune where the original singer used it as a special effect.
