The members of KORN were there in the crowd soaking wet in the rain, and after the gig they asked Babymetal for taking part in Korn's American tour.

FYI. at this show, it rained so hard before Babymetal went on. their set was delayed 45 minutes. all the crowd stayed in the rain to watch Babymetal. that is why most of their equipment is covered up with plastic. 2014 Babymetal played at Sonisphere in the UK being their first festival outside of Japan. the producers of Download did not like Babymetal so they were off the list for 2015. however, Dragonforce, who Babymetal is friends with, snuck them in to play on stage with them even though they were not invited. after that they were invited 2016, 2018, and they would have played this year except for that stupid virus crap. UK is Babymetal's second home. sold out Wembley 2016 and last year they started their tour in Europe and UK.

Just wondering, does sneaking in an artist whom is not on the bill represent a problem for the band that snuck them in? In other words did Dragonforce have to pay Babymetal for being on stage from their own pockets?

I couldn't pass on the opportunity to use your words to tell you that they had to overcome the "Gimmick test barrier" all the way back at Sonisphere in 2014 in the UK. In 2016 they're already fair game but the true test was in 2014 when they began their first tour outside of Asia and came to Europe. That's a rather long story but I'll try to make it short and prepare the field for when you decide to react to their live performance of "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" at Sonisphere UK 2014. So back at that time, BABYMETAL was still in its infancy years, trying to make a mark internationally. They'd got some viral Music Videos on RU-vid at that point but hadn't yet proven themselves outside of Japan and a couple times in Indonesia if I remember correctly. The girls had all dreamed of traveling abroad and perform to new crowds. So in 2014 they began their first European tour and at the time they were still very niche. The few metalheads who knew about BABYMETAL thought of them as a fun Japanese gimmick that wasn't very legit. Their first two dates were safe ones in Paris and Cologne where they performed at small venues in front of like a thousand fans. On their 3rd date they would go to the infamous Sonisphere UK festival where allegedly the crowd isn't shy of booing bands they do not like or throwing things at them. But they went and booked a spot for one of the smaller tents inside that massive festival, already raising a few eyebrows in the metal community once they've seen BABYMETAL featured in the lineup. But the story doesn't stop there. A couple months before the festival was to be held, the organizers decided on a whim to give them a massive Main Stage spot. A mainstage where bands like Deftones, Antrax and Iron Maiden would play later on that very same day and bands like Limp Bizkit, Metallica, The Prodigy, Gojira and MASTODON would play on the other two days of the festival. At that point, some drama began to occur on various social media sites talking about this. Many hateful comments were sent toward the organizers and the band being there amongst these legit iconic metal bands. Many people felt BABYMETAL had no place there and there were talks of booing them offstage and throwing bottles of urine at them. Obviously this had an impact on the girls and they were a bit scared to go on that stage. But not so much scared to get booed or thrown stuff at, but more that there would just be nobody there and they'd be playing in front of an empty field, deprived of the energy that their crowds usually provide them with. Long story short, and I'll leave the results to your own reaction to that performance (Ijime, Dame Zettai is the song they ended their rather small setlist with and by that time the crowd was very into it). The 60k metalheads that gathered there that day out of curiosity for that Gimmicky Japanese Metal band massively embraced them and cheered them on, even chanting for an encore. Rumor has it that BABYMETAL that day has outsold every other artist featured at that massive metal festival in the UK. Since then, the girls of BABYMETAL often refer to the UK as their "second home" after Japan and never miss an opportunity to come back there. This year in February, they had 4 dates for the UK alone ! Many people agree that their appearance at Sonisphere and the mysterious ways in which BABYMETAL got bumped up from a small side-stage to the big stage helped BABYMETAL immensely in getting international recognition It is literally their breakthrough performance and you should definetly watch it and react to it. Some people have speculated that the one responsible for throwing them on the mainstage maybe had malintent and wanted BABYMETAL to be ridiculed but it turned 180 degrees from that. When booking that festival date, they thought they'd play in front of convinced fans in a small tent with a few thousand people. They had to bring the goods in front of a half-hostile/half-curious crowd of 60k metalheads... Since then, they've been at Download multiple times, the last time being 2018 and they would've gone again in 2020 were it not for the pandemic. To this day I still feel immensely proud of what they've accomplished because I can appreciate the numerous obstacles and gatekeepers that they had to go through before being accepted. Hard work, talent, genuine love and passion for their craft is what brought them to the highest of heights and I literally feel like a proud uncle every time I remember what these girls had to go through to get to where they are at now and the Sonisphere 2014 performance is truly a decisive moment in their career. I'm sorry for this long-ass reply and I sincerely hope I didn't write this all for nothing. I would really love for you to go ahead and take a look at that Sonisphere performance to which I'll leave a link to below. Cheers. Liked and subscribed. Edit : removed the link because my comment didn't get through and that might be the reason but it's fairly easy to find on RU-vid it's : BABYMETAL - Ijime Dame Zettai Live at Sonisphere 2014.

So Moa and Yui (the two original Members) job on the side of Su (leadsinger) is labeled "Scream and Dance". As Babymetals live performances are aimed to be pleasing to all the sences, not just musically, but also visually, dance is of course a huge chunk of what they're contributing to a Babymetal performance. But depending on the song, they are also harmonizing, screaming and shouting (hyping the crowd). On the first two albums, they also had 2 songs each (so 4 in total), where they're doing the vocals, while Su is propably having a rest behind the stage. These songs are labeled "Black Babymetal" and, maybe to your surprise, belong to the heaviest songs babymetal have in their repertoire. Meanwhile Yui sadly left the band due to health reasons. Instead of her there are now three changing "Avangers" rotating in her spot. These girls dont have mics. Though a good chunk of the fanbase would like them to have it and sing, because they're all trained and experienced singers and allready known to people who followed Babymetal for a longer period and dived deeper into their origins.
@hardybryan
@hardybryan 3 года назад
So Yui and Moa (the side dancers) mainly do 'scream and dance'. In Japan, it's considered disrespectful to sing along with the lead singer. But to keep the audience connected to the metal tradition, they give the accompanying girls parts the crowd can go along with. You'll notice as you go, the girls basically cue the audience.

Kobametal's message from the start: don't hold back because they are idols or girls - play it loud ! And they love it, they couldn't do that at any other gig they had as musicians. And Babymetal music is actually hard to play too, it's real metal, so they have to bring their A-game as well and obviously they like that part of the challenge. Just as much as the girls want to convince a crowd.

Great reaction. When you understand Yui's and Moa's role you will understand BABYMETAL - The whole idea was formed and developed around Su's vocal talents and stage presence, she is BABYMETAL. The Kami Band came in when they separated from the parent Jpop Idol group where they started and legitimised them as a band, but Yui and Moa (or Moa and the chosen Avenger now) are what makes BABYMETAL unique and special. They are the main connection between the band and the audience, they lead the chants within songs, when they sing the crowd sing along with their lines, when they make a move in the choreo or jump or whatever the crowd follows their lead. They will be the ones at the front of the stage (where the choreo allows for it) making eye contact with the crowd, smiling, chivying people along to join in and showing their appreciation for the smiles the crowd are giving back.

Your comment about being willing to suffer discomfort to connect with a band resonated with me, I thought I was getting too old for that kind of thing until I found myself queuing for over four hours on a miserable wet and cold February evening to get in to see Babymetal in London. The maddest thing was that I didn't need to queue. I had tickets and an allocated seat. I just wanted to be part of the experience along with 5,000 other fans. Just connecting with like minded fans and sharing that sense of community was as important a part of the whole thing as the concert itself.

The people behind the Download festival originally said that BABYMETAL would NEVER play there. Then in 2015 DragonForce snuck the BABYMETAL girls into the festival and planned to perform "Gimme Chocolate" with the girls during their set that was in a side performance tent. Word had gotten out about this and a huge crowd that went far beyond the tent showed up. Well, they killed it and the next year the girls performed on the main stage, which is the video you are watching now! BABYMETAL has played at Download almost every year since. BTW, you can actually find the DragonForce and BABYMETAL performance on RU-vid. Great reaction! 🦊🤘

There is a bit of background that makes this performance a bit more interesting. You know, Babymetal had to fight a really hard gatekeeping at their start. Now it's not the same, but still there is something. But when they appeared a lot of people put their prejudices in, you know, how they look, a bunch of japanese teenagers doing metal? That's not the way. So Babymetal found a lot of gatekeeping. They still have to fight it a bit. What happened with download was that they tried to perform in Download 2015, they were on tour on the UK that summer, but the director said that while he was in charge, a band like Babymetal would never find a place in his festival. At that time Babymetal was in good relations with Dragonforce as they were composing Road of Resistance together, the girls were on the UK at that time and Dragonforce was performing at Download. And this happened: they smuggled them in their concert, and everyone went to their tent to see them. The next year, Babymetal was on the main stage.

Saw and commented on your Rondo of Nightmare reaction - believe me, I get it that you're having connection problems but you have so many songs awaiting you to fall down that foxhole. As I said last night, ' Tales of the Destinies' is completely rad - and as a musician, you will DEFINITELY appreciate it. If you like melodic but heavy too, maybe 'Akatsuki' , 'Syncopation', and for wonderful melodic verses and choruses, ballads such as 'Amore' and 'No Rain no Rainbow'. The girls are an essential part of the theatrical performance and the choreography is in total sync throughout an entire concert - Moa metal can sing very well but sadly she only gets an opportunity on her Birthday when Su passes the mic to her to finish 'Headbanger' - I love her voice! 'GJ' is great as is 'The One' - so many more and I haven't even touched on the latest stuff. You definitely have an open mind musically and on the latest album they bring a touch of Indian music to metal (Shanti Shanti Shanti) and rap metal (Papaya) and (BxMxC) there's also one that has a sea shanty slant to it with guest vocals from the lead singer of Sabaton who's drummer incidentally is married to Floor Jansen! Keep em coming - love your reactions! I would be a Patreon but am unable due to a lack of funds - if I were a Patreon I'd be in your ear daily to react to the above songs!

The other two members (at the time of this gig) are Yui Mizuno (black glove on the right hand) and Moa Kikuchi (glove on the left hand). Their roles are listed as "Scream and Dance" in the bio and often provided backup vocals when all three were on stage. The two of them were also known as "Black Babymetal" and had some songs on the first two albums, and Suzuka Nakamoto (lead singer) had solo songs as well, like "Rondo". Yui left in October 2018 due to medical issues, and while they later returned to a three-member front with Suzuka and Moa still in the group, other new members known as "the Avengers" were added, rotating through that third spot during the set. They weren't part of the recording of the last album or to my knowledge have provided vocals during concerts.

Su is the main singer, Yui (now gone due to health reasons) and Moa are both Scream and Dance. They have some lines and harmonize a bit. Mostly Yui and Moa are what makes the crowds jump, dance and sing along. They have 4 solos (without Su) to give Su a rest. When they perform without Su they are called Black Babymetal. Considered the hardest Babymetal song is Sis Anger (about disliking stupid boys) which is given to Black Babymetal, the most Kawaii (cute). Su has solos as well, which you have already reacted to one.

BABYMETAL could have aborted the performance and gone back to a comfortable hotel but they didn't because the huge crowd was waiting and no one left the venue. The girls never modified their choreo even on the slippery stage (You can actually see Su-Metal slipping lightly at 11:07 in your video. ). On the contrary, Yui and Moa threw themselves onto the wet floor and Kamis moved hard (BOH, bassist, jumped) with the girls to cheer up everyone there. Those scenes moves me to tears. Yui and Moa do harmonize sometimes, but mostly have their own parts in songs like in this one. They also have 4 songs on their own without the lead singer - Onedari Daisakusen, 4 No Uta, GJ and Sis Anger - and they're referred to as Black Babymetal when they're on their own. These songs are quite different with some having more rap style vocals. One of the songs, Sis Anger, is also the heaviest Babymetal track to date with the instrumentals having a black metal influence. I personally think it's too early for that one though. Just like on the last video, I'll recommend the official video for Megitsune. I have a feeling you'll connect to this one. It's quite heavy and very melodic. For this song, the official video really is the best for a first impression. There's some good live videos but most aren't available on RU-vid.

The two younger girls (Moa and Yui) mostly do backing vocals and choreo, but that is not all they do. Just like Rondo of Nightmare was only Su, there are also Babymetal songs with just Moa and Yui. This is known as Black Babymetal and these songs tend to be a bit heavier. Some songs are Sis Anger, Onedari Daisuken and GJ. 2 Years ago, Yui left the band for health reasons and now they work with a select group of girls rotating to fill the third spot in Babymetal.

The two side members are Moa-Metal (Dimples) and Yui-Metal. There role is mostly to interact with the fans through dance and two supplement Su-Metal’s vocals in parts. Note their choreography is meant to connect with the crowd and to tell a story with the song, much like Kabuki. Interesting that the crowd mostly sings along with Moa and Yui’s parts and not Su’s. Much like Rondo is a Su single, Yui and Moa have their own songs under the label Black Babymetal. Interesting that the heaviest Babymetal song Sis Anger is a Black Babymetal song. As I said in your Rondo song if you really want to see a UK metal festival crowd and Babymetal check out Ijime Dame Zettai from 2014, Sonisphere. The girls were 2 years younger and the crowd was a mix of a few fans, some coming to hate and others drawn to the stage by the Kami Band’s soundcheck. It is THE biggest performance in Babymetal’s history and has been said so by Su-Metal about how important it was to them.

Interesting the way you talk about festivals crowd and career rockets. It was thanks to their set in Sonisphere uk in 2014 that they made their breakthrough in the West, song usually recommended is ijime Dame zettai from that festival in 2014. Great power metal song with nice message for the lyrics, which can be roughly translated to No more bullying, forever. Other comments already answered about the role of the other 2 girls and their own songs so won't add more to that. All in all, interesting reaction with interesting facts/deducted things, and if you don't connect with them even with more songs, that's ok, you aren't being disrespectful to them, as you said you see why we love them, and that's the most important thing imo.

Good reaction once again! Really well put on how music is art and moves people in different ways. Which is okay and it should! Seeing that crowd just enjoying the band and the show is what metal and concerts are about to me. Good times with good people. Hope you will still check more bands from Japan like NINGEN ISU, who have been rocking since 80's and are still going strong!

Good grief if there are two things that bug me the most about people recommending BabyMetal performances it is: 1. Recommending Rondo of Nightmare to new reactors (confusing to them as it is a solo performance-so why do it????) 2. Recommending official videos of BabyMetal over Live performances. BabyMetal must be seen LIVE to be appreciated.

Good reaction. I watched to the very end of both of your Babymetal reactions. Your best chance to really connect with Babymetal is to see them live at their own concert with their dedicated fans. I suggest Road of Resistance live in Japan. Crowed interaction and participation is off the charts. Be sure to pause a lot and maybe put on a watermark over the video to avoid amuse’s blockage. Cheers

Moa and Yui are mainly dance support. But they do have vocal parts. And they also have their songs where they are the main singers as well. Another thing Moa,Yui do is reinforce Su-'s Crowd control. They are mini hype women!

They used to be 3「Su (the main vocalist) & Moa & Yui (their job is to do the backing vocals, dance and pump up the crowd)」, but now they are 2, Yui left the group for health reasons. Some songs you have the 3 girls, some others 2, and some others just 1 girl. Next try: "Road of Resistance (live in Japan)" or, since you like european crowds then try "Ijime, Dame, Zettai (live at Sonisphere, UK)" which is an anti-bullying song.

I can only add that "Headbanger" Live Legend 1997 should be your next stop. You will get an idea of the important role YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL have in the group. They are responsible for leading and engaging the crowd while SU-METAL does her thing. Watch it until the end . . .

I was laughing all through your initial talk about UK and European festival crowds. That is because Babymetal on their first European tour opened the Sonisphere 2014 mainstage to a crowd of 60,000. At the ages of 15 and 16½. The girls were worried that maybe no one would come. And there was also talk of bottles of piss to be tossed at bands the crowd didn't like. But they went on and did their best. They ended their 30 minute set to chants of "we want more" and "one more song." There is an official video of the last song of the set: "Ijime, Dame, Zettai." The favored translation is No More Bullying, Forever.

Yui and Moa do more vocals in other songs but songs together Su gets the most as she’s the lead singer the whole band was built around her vocals. Yui and Moa have a sub unit which is black Babymetal they have 4 songs where they sing without Su. If you want to hear one of those their most brutal song is sis anger. Great reaction by the way.

Basically, the 2 girls (Yui and Moa) are the connection to the crowd. They are what makes Babymetal Babymetal. Without them it would be just another band. A dam good band but not so unique. Su, the lead singer, makes Babymetal great. She elevates it to awesomeness. The band also plays a role in making it great but they make it all legit. They give the whole thing credibility. At least that's my opinion.

I like how you mentioned the crowd singing along with them. Nobody ever picks up on that. BABYMETAL noticed as they were touring the world that their fans were learning Japanese so that they could sing along with their songs. They were so touched by this that they challenged themselves to write a song completely in English. "The One" is that song. It's a love letter to their fans, who they affectionately refer to as The One.

BabyMetal's first Western concert was at Sonisphere 2014, another UK metal festival. They were originally slotted for a smaller stage, but near last minute they were thrown onto the main stage. The theory is that one of the producers of Sonisphere felt that the girls were too gimmicky for the festival and wanted them to get ripped by the crowd. There's a picture of the girls right before their set started, as they saw the massive crowd for the first time, and they were intimidated. But once they started the set, they refused to let their doubts hinder them. By the end of the set, the crowd was cheering for more. The last song they played was "Ijime ,Dame, Zettai" (No More Bullying Forever). The performance at Sonisphere is on Babymetal's official channel.

Sonisphere was actually their third concert in the West, after Paris and Cologne and they weren't thrown onto the main stage last minute, but rather a couple months in advance. The theory you mentioned is quite funny though, people sure have an imagination xD

Regarding what you said at 15:00... The first time I got the chance to see them live, they weren't performing any where near where I live. I had to drive 12 hours to get there even though I had to be in to work the next morning. Left the concert and drove straight home all night without a break and went straight into work without even stopping at my house. Was almost 2 hours late. I think I had a total of about 5 hours of sleep in a 60-65 hour period. I honestly, those last couple of hours are still pretty foggy to me.

Babymetal was formed in an J-pop artist school "Sakura Gakuin" (sponsored by Amuse) as a school club. Su-metal was designated as the lead singer and dancer. Moa-metal and Yui-metal auditioned and got the role of "dancer and screamer". Screamer's responsibilities include backing vocal, screaming, and connecting with the crowd. The club was formed to introduce more young girls to heavy metal music. As a school club, Babymetal's performance drew huge crowds and they could hold their own concerts. Babymetal's success was totally unexpected, after Su-metal graduated from the school, Amuse entertainment changed Babymetal to its own girl group independent of the school.

The only show I was at when it rained was LONG ago in Oxford Maine in 1988 for the Monsters of Rock tour. The traffic to the show was a parking lot, so my friend and I missed Kingdom Come, Metallica and Dokken, but we were able to see the Scorpions perform in driving rain and lightning so bad they were squeegeeing the stage between numbers and had to take a break after they got shocked by a very close strike. We had to wait while Van Halen was helicoptered in once the wind was "safe enough" and their set was a blast. We shivered the whole time and were sick for most of the next week. And it was WORTH IT! I just wish we had been able to see all five bands.

About what you said at the start. Babymetal 1st played in the UK in 2014 @ Sonisphere, a metal festival that no longer runs. At the time hardly anyone had heard of them. When they were 1st booked they were going to play a side stage, but got moved to the main stage as the opening act. Now there are a few things about UK crowds, we don't like getting up early, so the 1st band normally gets 5k - 15k crowds, with the higher being if you are known. And if they don't like you, they are going to throw things at you, inc bottles full of.....well it's a long walk to the toilets. Check out Babymetal Sonisphere Ijime Dame Zettai (translation: No More Bullying Forever)

Yuimetal and Moametal, Sing, dance and play guitar for Years they have lessons... They also wrote song 4 on Uta on the first album, and there is also a subgroup within Babymetal that plays heavier and heavier songs. Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno They are singers and dancers, as well as models and actresses ... As Kobametal said Su is a goddess and the two Yui and Moa are two fairies who help the goddess. With the departure of Yuimetal, the rise of Moametal was evident, she gained prominence even losing her support and best friend, even before Sakura Gakuin the two were already friends, more than ten friends Moametal Did all the backing vocals of Metal Galaxy and before in Babymetal and Metal Resistance it was in the company of Yuimetal She deserved to be on a higher level, just as The Sun represented Su on the last CD and Moa was represented by the Moon in metal Galaxy giving even more prominence for winning a massive birthday show. The name of the group within Babymetal is BlackBabymetal and putz are the heaviest and wildest songs on the album, written at the very least with a lot of anger.
