Phil Collins has been a professional drummer for over 40yrs. Unfortunately for his fans, he has retired due to his age and medical issues. He is currently 73yrs old.
But fortunately for him, two of his sons, Simon and Nic, are carrying on his legacy by being equally amazing drummers in their own right. 😊 Simon with his projects Sound Of Contact and e-Molecule as well as his solo career and Nic with his bands Better Strangers and The Effect. 🙂 I've met Nic at an event in England last Christmas. A really nice guy.
💬I know, I know. I did another live version first. 😅 In general, I prefer studio versions of most songs over live versions, unless I am in the same room with the artists. I plan on doing the studio version but the live version is probably one of the best live versions of a song I’ve seen on video. I want to wait a bit to do the studio so there are more reactors to use. 99% of the reactors have heard this song, but have not seen the live performance. That was another factor in why I did the live version first. This edit was particularly tough due to the audio waveform (not sure if that’s the technical term) was difficult to match up in the last half of the song. Plus I used a fair amount of different reactors. Enjoy! ONTO THE NEXT! 💜
hey Momma, nice work as allways.......have you seen the peter gabriel live version of in your eyes?if not, please check it out for your enjoyment, and a possible video
Good choice on the live version... This hit SO hard! Man, him timing getting back to the drums is the second most boss move in one of your vids... First is, and always will be, Paz of A Perfect Circle putting her hair up during the middle break in Judith... Great job as always, keep em coming!
Phil Collins is part of this generation of artists with whom I had the chance to grow up. And Wonder MommaOG knows how to pay homage to them in an ever-so-grand way.
Look. I've been watching RU-vid for a LOOONG time, and I probably spent way too much time doing so still. That said, seeing people's reactions to Phil dropping this iconic drum fill during this live performance is still one of my favorite things to watch.
So glad you did this live version. I’ve seen Phil Collins and Genesis both. To see this live was simply amazing. Brought back the feelings and anticipation of what everyone watching this was about to experience!
Chills every time…I can’t think of any other song that conveys such a clear sense of menace (in a good way), and this live version is exceptional. So sorry PC’s health has forced him to retire from performing, but at least we can still enjoy this video. Hope he is able to spend time with loved ones and enjoy the time he has. Great job, WMOG! ❤
I honestly really appreciate you doing the live versions first! I'm also someone who usually prefers studio versions, but your videos really help me gain a new appreciation for the live renditions, along with the energy and vibes from the reactors! Keep up the amazing work :)
I love this! Thank you for letting me know that. I am really set on the studio versions too but through watching reactions have learned to appreciate many live performances.
I love the idea that thousands of us strangers from across the planet are all tuning in together to watch one of your videos, sharing in our love of music. I know you’ve said sometimes the making of a video can be challenging, please remember that the end result is a great source of joy to so many. ❤ WMOG - great live version - EDIT: loved Siera Eagleson’s voice/version very pretty
It’s awful getting old. I am 57 and have watched as these absolute LEGENDS have become unable to perform or passed. They don’t make artists like this anymore.
I truly believe that there are people out there who do make great music. Music like this where they don't use autotune, play their own instruments and write their own songs. I just think they don't get record deals anymore. It's much easier to control an artist you have created then it is to control an actual artist. The handpick these people and create for them a public identity, a facade that is easily marketable. With auto-tune and music sampling, anyone can appear to be musically talented
I'm old as you are, and I know precisely what you mean. But hey, we were so lucky to live those days, and enjoyn' the best years of music in the modern era. So, let be it!
@@ninajones1175 I’m pretty sure I’m gonna shed a few tears when that time comes. Been a fan for over forty years. That man is gonna be missed by a💩load of people.
The drum fill... Phil made this fill and another fill. (At his home studio...along with other parts of the song) When he went to the main studio to mix the song, he grabbed all the tapes of the different tracks he had recorded. He looked at the 2 drums fills and didn't think either fill was special. He just decided to take the first one. This is what we got. Phew.
Being a man of this generation that the song came out in. I could not count the many times I have heard this beautiful iconic song play Phil Collins. And I have seen every one of these reaction videos individually. I have to say you edit them together very nicely. But the best reaction I've ever witnessed was it when I was at work one night security for a very large chain of grocery store. And I was up on the bridge looking at security monitors best people came in walking through the store doing their shopping is couples families individuals. I also was able to choose the music being played and this was one that happened to play. And if you know this song you know the drum drop. It is legend to this song alone. And I kid you not, when it came up, every single bro , which had to be at least seven.. all dropped what they we're doing. In one case let go of his entire basket of goods... And proceeded to knock out an air drum 🥁 in whatever aisle they were in. All of them in unison the Phil Collins. It was glorious to witness. And I knew right then and there this song was legend. And to see this compilation 40 years later gladly proved me right. Rock on.
I was already a Genesis fan when this song came out. I’ve been lucky enough to see Phil perform solo and with Genesis, always a great performance. Hearing this particular song live is an amazing experience!
I’m confused that all of these reviewers (especially the majority who have heard the song before) are mind blown that he’s the drummer. Phil Collins is first and foremost a drummer and producer. He was Genesis’ drummer from 1971. This, his first solo effort, came out in 1980. How, in 43 years has it escaped so many that he’s a drummer, and a revered one at that. He pioneered the drum sound of the 80s and 90s. That said, I have to admit that the “he plays drums???” reveal is what makes these reactions compelling to me. Maybe liner notes (poured over as the album spun on the turntable) are the lost gems of a bygone era. They were meticulously written and actually imparted knowledge to the listener that’s overlooked today.
@@michaeljennejohn8969 yes I did, he was a two bit hustler posing as a drug dealer and then at the end of The episode I believe he was a tv game show host. They always had musicians and athletes do guest appearances.
I'm one of the five people in the world who never watched Miami Vice...lol. This song came out my freshman year of high school, so I've known it well since then. I just never got into Miami Vice, and I'm pretty sure it was on television on like Friday night, so I wasn't home like my sister...lol.
@@paulwebster3417 I never watched the series myself growing up, but my mom did. I saw a video here on yt a while back that broke down all the guest appearances and it's kinda crazy just how many celebrities were on the show who hadn't even made it big yet!
This live performance is one of my top ten live performances ever! In the Air Tonight is wonderfully eerie...haunting... goosebumps inducing and the fact that Phil sings with such clarity while doing that amazing and iconic drum fill always blows my mind. Thank you Wondermomma ❤...you once again hit my music life journey...I remember when it came out ...I loved it immediately...but there is something about this live version and build up...that is even more haunting to me...its like he knew this may be the last time he could physically do this song...you can feel the pain...Wow!!! Love to you for choosing this astounding live version! 💕
So….I knew this song was coming. I knew it was going to be a very good compilation. But I did not realize it was going to be this live version 😮 And I forgot how insanely good this live version is. So so so good!! Great work! I love that Phil Collins has such a great singing career that many don’t know he was a drummer/singer from the start.
Being a backup/support drummer for Phil Collins must be the easiest job in the world.... "just hit the snare a few times, work the cymbals a bit, and I'll take care of the rest".
I always love watching people/ the "youngins" react to this video. Always makes me (as a 54yr) chuckle. Yep. Short, bald... and one HELL of a musician/entertainer. He's like fine wine... just getting better with age. To quote JLo... "my goosies have goosies". Welcome to the Air.
I am under 40, so one of the "youngins", but I new Phils music already when I was 12, all thanks to my dad who listened to this eras music all the time. And that had a great impact on my musics taste. So in short - play the music you like to your kids and it will always have a special space in their heart (even if they only realize it once they are older).
They synced videoes were so great when phil collins hit the initial notes on the intro.. every single video box i saw ear to ear smiles. I myself was all smiles as well. Genuine ,pure spontaneous joy!! Not one unsmiling face. Pure magic.. spectacular job to the girl that did this!!! Where has she been all these years?? Marriage material for sure. Nothing more sexy and mentally alluring than a chick who digs great music , is more technically savy than i and is a Led Zeppelin fan! A 10,10,10 !!!! The song, video ,her!
Was a big Genesis, Phil Collins fan. Haven’t hear this in years. He’s such an amazing drummer. Need to check out Phil/Chester Thompson drum duet🔥 Another great mashup WonderMommaOG👏Keep them coming❤
I just want to say that after seeing the compilation of reactions to this song has made me appreciate Phil even more which I didn’t think was possible. Thank you Phil. You are a legend. My heart sends you much happiness
Almost every single one of us from GenX knows this song absolutely blew up on Miami Vice- circa 1981. Fun fact: This song is about the lingering tension caused by the divorce of Phil Collins and his first wife. These negative feelings were "In The Air," and affecting not just the couple getting divorced, but the entire family. Urban Myth: When Collins was a young boy, he witnessed a man drowning someone, but was too far away to help. Later, he hired a private detective to find the man, sent him a free ticket to his concert, and premiered the song that night with the spotlight on the man the whole time.
I'm old..i've been listening to this song most of my life...sorry this comment is gonna be long..Phil Collins was a drummer in a group named Genesis..when the lead singer Peter Gabriel left to pursue a solo career Phil stepped in to sing lead..he's not a singer that plays the drums, he's a drummer that sings a bit, as he says..he wrote this song while going through a painful divorce after catching his wife cheating with his friend..the intensity you see is real..he's reliving a painful event to perform this song for us..the lyrics are very deep..when he's coming down the stairs and sings the part "you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand"..he's admitting he wasn't there for her.."I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am"..he's saying, you don't really know me if you think I would forgive this..in the chorus he says "Well, I've been waiting for this moment all my life"..he's saying what a lot of us feel about that bit of fear that our partner will deceive us..often when ppl break up they say something like "I knew you would hurt/do this to me"..he's been waiting for this to happen to him..when he says "this is the first time, the last time we ever met"..he's saying this is the first time I see the real you and the last time cause Im gone..just think, if Peter hadn't left the group, we would've never known how extremely talented Phil really is..if you pay attention during the drum solo, you'll notice his eyes are closed the whole time..he forces them open at the end..he gives us a part of his soul when he performs this..god bless him..he very sick and wheelchair bound now..my fav. part is the slight casual bow he takes afterwards, like he didn't just blow the roof off that MF!!
AMAZING JOB on this WonderMomma! You always deliver clean, smooth compilations and I'm here for it. If I can suggest another live version of a song, AC/DC's Thunderstruck
@@jillwanlin9558 Probably. lol I do know that song well. I can put it on my list. Can't say when I will be able to get to it at the present time. Appreciate the suggestion!
Another fantastic compilation of an epic song! Well done!! I also usually prefer studio versions but your reasons for doing this live version are spot on...this being such a well-known song and this version being so powerful! I love how he timed his stroll around the stage to the drum kit. I also liked how some of the vocals were kind of over dubbed with a synthesizer. It sounded similar to the Lord's Prayer section of Pink Floyd's song "Sheep"
We need more Phil reactions. Sadly, he is another legend whose health has prevented him from performing recently. I believe it's his hands or something making it unable for him to play. We keep losing our legends.
This dude has been in pain, through a series of medical issues and mishaps, for the last 15 years or so. It's tough just for him to stand at this point. I understand that at the end of his playing days, they had to attach the sticks to his hands with special gloves or velcro or something. I saw him with Genesis back in 1978 or '79. What a great band, even without Peter Gabriel! Phil's voice was really close enough to Gabriel's to do all of the older Genesis stuff . His daugher Lily is a really good actress!
I remember while growing up, the lady across the street from where I lived would give me a ride to school sometimes, and she would always play this. Didn't know he was the drummer. Also never paid attention to the lyrics until this video. Absolutely haunting. Thank you for your hard work and for sharing it with us.
Something that a lot of people don't realize is that when Phil wrote this song, he was in the middle of an absolutely brutal divorce from his wife at the time and writing this song, and others that appeared on his "No Jacket Required" album was essentially therapeutic for him to vent those anger issues
A life lesson is never piss off Phil Collins because the whole world is going to hear about it. Good that he can channel his pain so creatively and we all get the benefit.
Thank you so much for an exceptional compilation - nothing was missed out, we got the views of most of my favourite reactors, and you compartmentalised them so well. And, of course, the song itself. Marvellous job - well done! ❤
I always wonder if by any sliver of a chance, any of these artists I do videos on would ever see any of them. I will probably never know... but that would be amazing.
So nice watching 'the making' and the graphic selections. It is worthy (almost) to this fabulous performance. Isn't wonderful to have access to some of the best audio art ever produced? Love it.
They say that they got goosebumps from the video? They should see it live. I mean, the song still gives me goosebumps when it comes on the radio or whatever. Man, I got to say, it was epic to see it performed live. Back in the 80s, we went to the no jacket required tour. It was freaking awesome. I got to say, we had the best music and the best concerts. Our rock gods didn't use Auto-Tune
The Charismatic Voice's reaction, as I recall from the original vid of hers, was my absolute favorite of all of these. Seriously, mentioning he's singing "like a drummer" then the fill happens, and she got a full "Surprised Pikachu face" at it. (My LEAST favorite was Mr. Video because as I recall he accidentally paused JUST BEFORE the fill, but Leo was annoyed at that himself IIRC. Hey, if you don't know the song, how are you gonna know?)
Another great choice for a live mashup. Would love to see The Moody Blues' live version of "Nights in White Satin" (unless you've already done it--😬). As always, great behind-the-scenes outro, and great portrait of Phil right before it!
Early 1991, late night at a stinking hot airbase in the Middle East. A Royal Air Force Tornado ground attack squadron is about to journey into darkness to launch some of the first attacks of the first Gulf War against the murderous regime of Saddam Hussein. Then *this* is played over the tannoy to ground and air crews alike.
Hey grl hey, Well a bit late, health kickin' my butt, but Im here and so ready for this. Hes such a phenomenal all around artist. U know its magic when everyone knows the song, yet has instant emotion and physical response. Music is the strongest form of magic. OMG Mr V. cracks me up "Santa", lmao. Great choice with acoustic Sierra Eagleson. So chillaxing. Thanx so much darlin, take care, Peace
You've heard it hundreds of times. You know just when it gonna hit. So, you sit back, grab a deep breath, and BOOM BABY. Phil hits you with what's close to the greatest beat drop ever. You're still moved by it. That my friends, is talent.
I'm sure if I had listened to this song for the 1st time properly w/ headphones it would've given me chills, but NO. I 1st heard it on my rinky-dink alarm clock radio. I can't help but feel cheated.
When Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun would have artists and tell him that they had the next great song and ne would play them In the Air Tonight and ask "Is it as good as that" and invariably they would say no. In the Air Tonight was released in 1981 and has aged like a vintage wine. Some songs are simply of the moment and you just have to be in the mood to listen to at a given time but this is simply a great song you can hear anytime IMHO.
That was amazing! I've seen everyone of those individually (and more), but it was fascinating to see how you put it all together. You put a lot of work into these compilations. I hope you get compensated for all of your hard work. Beautiful! Thank you!
It's an incredible and beautiful video, Momma❣️ 1 of my favs. Saw Phil early on with Genesis and Peter was still front man. Later, saw Phil solo and again with Genesis as lead and Chester on drums, Phil wound play on certain songs, incredible. Love this❣️🤩
