Yeah, I think RTD and Moffat, in spite of the objections and criticisms fans of the past have had against each of them, were clearly able to keep seeding.. different Chekhov's Guns (like Chekhov's whole armory) all through a season, and Moffat was especially good at tying things together from across multiple seasons. And modern Who fans might have gotten a little spoiled with that, but that was something fans probably came to expect from the show itself, and the absence of any obvious apparent season arc or throughline, as well as the mention of the Timeless Child with no obvious resolution, or even progress towards explanation, felt a bit off. According to another comment, seems Chibnall found himself too swamped but was aware of the issues, at least partly, which is good.

Chibnall recently actually spoke about this episode, and how he doesn’t like it much and how it doesn’t feel like a series finale. This was a first draft story due to time constraints. I’m not a massive fan of his era, but I respect him for his honestly and passion for the show - even if I don’t always agree or enjoy his decisions. He specifically said: "Particularly in that first series, I spent a lot of time helping other writers. We had some problems towards the end and I had to go back and do some big rewrites. Which meant that the version of episode 10 that we filmed was a first draft. But I just didn’t have time to do a second draft. It didn’t feel enough like a season finale, and that was entirely down to time. So that’s my least favourite script of mine. But I really attacked Resolution, so hopefully I made up for it with that one."
@gluuuuue

Yeah, I can definitely see the additional effort and care put into Resolution. I would've definitely still preferred a single tight ending than the faltered + a makeup, but I can respect and appreciate Chibnall's honesty and acknowledgement of the deficiencies a lotta fans perceived with the season. (Also though he did better with Series 12.)

Resolution for me was the moment that things changed & wiped the God awful taste in my mouth from this episode. I said it at the time, it wasn't a series finale & followed the pattern of S11 with Jodie not being tested and there being no real stakes involved

You guys talked about my biggest criticism of this series with the lack of an overarching story. You can literally watch the first 2 episodes and then skip straight to the finale without missing anything relevant to the plot of this episode. Compare that with say Series 3 where every episode contains something that will be important again in the finale. The Lazarus Experiment might not be a good episode but it introduces us to the idea of age-altering technology which comes back up in the finale, making a fairly forgettable episode important to watch. In Series 11 there's nothing like that. If you don't like something like Arachnids in the UK or Kerblam there is no reason to ever watch them again. It makes this series feel kind of weak as a single coherent work when compared to the others

I also have really enjoyed Segun Akinola's work scoring Who. This week he announced that he will be leaving with Jodie & Chris in the centenary special. For what he was asked to do in S11 he did it well but was unleashed from the next ep onwards. His version of the theme is the best IMO since S4 & for that I'll forever be grateful 🙏 There is now rumour that RTD has twisted the arm of Murray Gold to return alongside him 😍

Also, pretty sure it wasn't a happy ending for all the inhabitants on those planets that were likely crushed to death from the density of the planet being shrunken and stored in those pods, but the planets popped back into place, so that's okay? (I really don't get Thirteen's lack of concern for people sometimes -- between that and thinking the everlasting 'living torture' of Tim Shaw was a good job...yeah, I don't recognize this character as the Doctor. Sorry.)
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 2 года назад
Tim Shaw isn't suffering a "living torture" - he's in stasis chamber, therefore in suspended animation and unconscious. Also, he could be released from the chamber and revived at any time, so he's not necessarily in there forever. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that's precisely what happens, so he can make a comeback in Jodie's last episode... I wouldn't put Chibnall past it :)

I completely agree that binge watching this is a much better experience than when we watched this in real time. There was so much time between Jodie's 1st appearance to when the series started, the hype got larger than what we got. Tim Shaw is no Weeping Angels. Having no experienced writers meant Chibnall had to oversee their work and not put in more time with his work. I think the 2nd season at least starts out much better! The shrunken planets are a callback to the Classic Who story. The Pirate Planet!

Another excellent reaction. I loved your discourse on the different show runners. I like both Moffat and Chibnall. I like this episode and this series. It’s not a perfect episode and I know Chibnall thought he never quite cracked it. I think my enjoyment of it comes from not seeing it as a finale to an arc. This is more of a reflection. Seeing Tim Shaw again shows how all the characters have grown since they came together. It also shows that even in victory the Doctor’s actions have consequences. I don’t need big bad guys for a whole series. It’s a big universe. I don’t mind that it didn’t weave through. A bookend is enough for me.

The first time watching Doctor who I’m just trying to understand the universe while still enjoying it. Being a new fan I didn’t have any expectation on what the show was or should be. People have strong opinions on what’s real Star Trek or Star Wars. After rewatching different showrunner take on each era of who I realize how dark Russel Davis era was. On repeat viewing I like chinball freshman season more than his others. Ironically I like the tone and feel of his last two season. I think it’s fascinating to watch different era and take of franchise that’s been around a long time.

While I'm not really a big fan of Jodie Whittaker's era, I will praise episodes that work mostly quite well ("Rosa", "Demons of the Punjab", "It Takes You Away"), and will admit that even episodes that don't really work have some redeeming aspects. This sadly is not one of those episodes, as I think "The Battle of Ranskoor av Kolos" is a genuinely terrible episode; it's the worst series finale since "The Wedding of River Song", the worst episode of series 11, and a real contender for the title of worst episode of the entire post-2005 series. The episode is a complete failure from start to end, quite literally. The title is absolutely terrible, an absolute clunker that fails to roll off the tongue, and is completely non-representative of the episode itself - seriously, where's the battle? Putting aside the title, the episode is a dull plodding mess full of missed opportunities and completely lacking in dramatic tension and compelling character drama. The concept of a planet that emits psychic waves that mess with people's minds and causes them to go berserk is genuinely interesting, and could even tie into Graham's sudden unexpected quest for revenge (more in that in a bit), but this plot detail has absolutely no impact on the overall plot. It gives Mark Addy amnesia and thus gives an excuse for Chibnall to have a character give exposition in a flat lifeless fashion, and during the climax gives a level of risk to the Doctor and Yaz putting themselves at risk by stopping the Ux destroying the Earth - said risk turning out to be just the two characters getting a slight headache. It's an utterly pathetic waste of a really interesting concept. Having proven himself to be an absolutely rubbish villain in "The Woman Who Fell to Earth", bringing Tzim-Sha back to be series 11's ultimate villain is a frankly ridiculous creative choice. The character isn't intimidating or threatening in the least, his plan is lacking in tension or stakes (destroying Earth should be a big deal, but the lack of indication of what's happening to it and reaction from the people completely robs it of any impact), and his method of defeat is utterly embarrassing. There's another interesting idea here of deconstructing the Thirteenth Doctor's outlook by exploring the after-effects of her absolute pacifism, but the episode fails to really engage with this idea, and kind of just brushes it off as kind of a joke. The same goes for the character's hypocrisy when it comes to using guns and bombs in the confrontation, there's a refusal to seriously engage with the Thirteenth Doctor's character flaws in a meaningful fashion and allow her to grow and develop as a character, which is alarmingly common in this era, but especially prevalent in this episode. But what really ticks me off about this episode is Graham's quest for revenge and how the Doctor responds to it. After "It Takes You Away" seemingly wrapped up this whole story about Grace's death and Graham finding some level of closure over it, digging up the storyline one episode later to do a played-out "male character seeks revenge for the death of a female loved one" storyline is unforgivably lazy. And that's not getting into how Graham hasn't ever proven himself to be a violent or vengeful person at any point in the last nine episodes, making this whole turn completely out of character (you can probably see how the planet's psychic waves could've factored into this). Then to make things even worse, there's the Doctor's absurdly unsympathetic response to Graham's trauma and emotional distress; I get that a companion wanting to commit murder out of pure vengeance and anger isn't really the Doctor's thing, but threatening to kick him out of the TARDIS when he's clearly not well mentally is unnecessarily harsh and completely out-of-character. And for the ultimate capper to this abominable storyline, rather than killing Tzim-Sha at the end of the episode, Graham and Ryan subject him to an even worse fate of being sealed in one of his stasis pods for all of time, and have the Doctor praise him for this. "Well done Graham, you've locked the guy in a stasis pod for eternity, a fate that had literally been compared to a living death in a previous episode, but at least you didn't kill him. You're such a strong and brave guy." At times like this, I'm really reminded of a specific quote made by the RU-vidr Shaun in his video on Harry Potter, and that series' approach to morality; namely that aside from a few actions like murder, there's no such thing as good or bad actions, just good or bad individuals. I've honestly barely scratched the surface of what is wrong with this terrible episode. I could complain about how the Ux are complete idiots who somehow believe Tzim-Sha to be their ultimate God/creator. I could complain about how the built-up threat of a larger Stenza army is completely dismissed to make way for the same useless putz we had back at the start of the series. I could complain about how clumsy the references to previous episodes are, or how Yaz once again has bugger all to do in this episode. But I've complained enough about "The Battle of Rancid Ass Colon" already, so I'm just going to offer some praise to the very few aspects of this episode that do work - the score is really effective and atmospheric, and the visuals are actually pretty good. And now, it's time to put this godforsaken mess of an episode to bed and move on to somewhat better material
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 2 года назад
Good post, but I would add: 1. If Tzim-Sha can be put into a stasis chamber, presumably he can be released from it; 2. I don't know why Graham has a personal vendetta against Tzim-Sha anyway, because Grace died by accidentally falling off a crane, so Graham's line "I will kill it if I can. For what it did to Grace" rings somewhat hollow as a result.

To be fair - if episodes were better and used properly, the fact its episodical wouldn't be an issue those are still way longer episodes than before, so they should have treated them like two parters. The amount of empty useless shots of deserts we got this season... Like there was space and time to make it a season of 10 short movies. I like both serialized and episodic stories, but my issues with Chibnall is his stories, whether episodic or serial, tend to have promising setups but too often just fall flat at the end, or try to send a message that's either inherently muddled or just doesn't gel with what happened in the story. Not every time, but often enough to become an increasingly visible pattern of disappointment. Moffat's problems were over-reliance on off screen character/relationship development and death buy-backs. Tropes that aren't inherently bad, but have diminishing returns over time. RTD's problem was mainly just treating plot as so secondary to character that he would sometimes just bullshit through it with some expositional gobbledygook in service of the emotion. They all had weaknesses, but to me Chibnall's created the most feelings of disappointment. Not consistently, but often, and he just didn't have enough strengths to make up for it (whereas the endings almost always worked for RTD and Moffat, even though the latter didn't always earn them). Your mileage may vary.

This episode was fine , I liked the be a better man aspect and this was a decent story with good acting . I think the main problem was too many changes too quickly , the pace of it was relentless with little of the light , shade and variety of previous incarnations , the musiic was more action movie , much of it was shot in semi darkness , or gloomy looking locations . with notable exceptions . I'm not sure if this series was screened on Saturday or Sunday evening , and a different audience . Certainly this first Chibnall series was less popular , the real controversy awaits . . .

Graham's my favorite companion of Jodie's seasons (that I've seen). Many find him the funniest and I do as well. The issue for me though is that that and his coverage seem to make him overshadow Ryan and Yaz, who aren't bad people, but feel a bit too much like just everyday people anyone might know. They always write the Companions as surrogates for the audience/viewers, and they're always ordinary human beings (almost always..), but the show and franchise has shown the Doctor generaly doesn't choose just anyone to be his/her Companion. They usually all have some moral or ethical integrity that even the Doctor themself admires and aspires to have as well. And I wish they showed us more of.. the kind of character Ryan and Yaz presumably have that critical at the most important times, and will make decisions most ordinary people won't.

The doctors morality really is all over the place this season. Woman who fell to earth: DOCTOR: What do you do with them, your human trophies? TZIM-SHA: They're held in stasis in our trophy chambers, on the cusp between life and death. DOCTOR: Left to rot? How completely obscene. The doctor believes these statis chambers to be eternal torture, but when Graham puts someone in there he is "The strongest person she knows". She gets mad at Ryan for wanting to shoot emotionless robots, the same robots she blows up with an EMP. It's better to let spiders starve to death, then letting someone shoot them.
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 2 года назад
The problem with that is Chibnall's weak grasp of sci-fi lore and his "all over the place" writing ;) Stasis chambers, by definition, keep you in suspended animation, so you don't rot. They're not torture chambers, because you're basically unconscious for the duration, and they're not eternal, because you can be removed from a stasis chamber and revived. That's the whole purpose of them. We can also blame Chibnall's poor writing for the spiders. Firstly, it wasn't the Doctor's plan to lock them in the panic room; that came from the spider expert, Dr Jade. Secondly, we aren't told what was going to happen to the spiders later; they might have been cared for in a zoo for all we know. Chibnall should have made this clear one way or another - all it needed was one line of explanation - but unfortunately he left it unresolved and ambiguous. However, it was never, _ever_ stated that the plan was to starve the spiders to death. Finally, the Doctor didn't like the fact that Ryan chose to use a gun against the robots, because (a) she doesn't like guns at all, and (b) other methods could have been used to take them out. So there's no real contradiction there.

RE: Dinosaurs on a spaceship, Chibnall said, Moffat told him I have five words for you: "Dinosaurs on a space ship!" And he told him he wanted a Michael Bay type romp. Now that you've finished the series, I can safely say why this one just doesn't do it for me. I'm a huge fan of the strong series arcs, and this one was sorely lacking. It had some really amazing episodes, but I rate whole series separately from individual parts. I'm not a "Chibnall sucks" person, as I loved series 12. Series 11, though, is second from the bottom (8 had a stronger series arc, but the character dynamics made it annoying to watch).
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 2 года назад
The character dynamics in S8 might have annoyed some people (albeit not me), but I have to say that the acting during the Moffat era was of a higher standard, the scripts were better structured and the dialogue better written. I also felt that we got many more imaginative stories in S8 than we got in S11, the one exception being "It Takes You Away". I'm not a "Chibnall era sucks" person either - I enjoyed it in fact - but, in all conscience, I couldn't rank any Moffat series below Chibnall's, for all the aforementioned reasons.

I do get why you didn't like it on first watch, but that was Chibnall's focal point, to not have an interwoven storyline, and get back to the roots of the show and just have adventure-based stories like Classic Who and I appreciate it, as someone who grew up with classic SciFi. I love Series 11 and, for me, it only gets better, in this era, don't care what anyone says. 1:25 The only person Im screaming at is Chris Chibnail, because this is like third bad title for an episode. I get those are alien locations, but give us English translation instead. 12:50 I kinda dislike this ending, as instead of putting him in prison or ending him - they locked him for eternity in stasis. With a shot foot. That's kinda another torturous finale for a villain. Same was with the spiders. Last time this happened Doctor was made to do it, in family of Blood. With all the talk about forgiveness and being better people I feel like they could have done more. But oh, well. 12:55 I didn't like how fast the fam thing was. They just were strangers to each other. Other than that it's whatever. It adds flavour to this Doctor and makes something original for her. It also fits her when she is actually written properly - like in comics, it is more endearing than I feel like it is in the TV show. I guess it is also continuity to last few Doctors, especially Capaldi, who was cold, but got really warm and friendly at the end. To the point it felt right to have two, no... three (if we count Missy) companions. Tbh, when I think about it - I genuinely feel we probably should have had Doctor switch between companions. I feel like it worked well in season 10, only because we already had established those characters properly - and it would work better here, if the episodes werent like "this is Yaz episode - everyone else just watch". 17:45 For me rewatching it - I still kinda stand with my original feelings. I hated what I hated, I liked what I liked. I definitely don't have as many negative emotions, because - I know this will end and there are still worse and better moments. At the time I feel like a lot of frustration was that - there was fear that Doctor Who will once again get cancelled, because this wasn't bringing numbers and quality previous series had. Also the fact that companions didn't get fleshed out here, doesn't mean they didn't get better treatment later. Which was my issue with this season as well. Especially Grahan in next season and Yaz in 13 get much better storylines and growth. Ryan I feel still missed the mark I would like him to reach, but I mean same can be said about Rory. And he also gets some good episodes next season as well. I guess with him being the opening character - I wish he was more like Rose? In that, we haven't had a main male companion since forever, if ever. 21:00 I kinda wish he kept the horror and gore that Tooth Fairy dude brought. Wish he delivered here. Also I still think that death of Grace was the biggest sin Chibnail ever did. Even with Orphan being counted for. She was and is still his best companion. This would be so much different and better, if we didn't have Ryan and Yaz, but only Grace and Graham with occasional Ryan. With Grace dying in this episode, this would be so much better. Then we could bring Ryan on board and bring Yaz as well. Then season 12 would also be saved by having the It Takes You and Demons moved there. With only Yaz staying for season 13 - much more established. With Graham defeating his ghosts leaving the team. 22:32 Personally I really disliked most of those episodes, some of them kinda being caricature of the show. Also the classic Chibs timer in 42. Ehh... I think the only good think he written before Woman Who Fell, Resolution and Flux - is the special minisode about Rory's dad learning the truth and meeting his grandson. 24:00 Tim Shaw was ok. Would be better, if we did see Stenza. Like in Ghost Monument we needed more than just words, either that or an episode later on featuring them. Arachnids could easily go for that. Oh wait. Imagine if it was damn Stenza in the Demons of Punjab. This would hit for Tim Shaw even harder that over the years he wouldn't even have house to come back. 24:15 Oh, one thing to add - the cinematography has been great in Chibs run. Even monsters even those cheap ones were usually ok. And later seasons improve on that aside Orphan. Especially costumes in Flux? That's art. Not just villains. 28:40 To be fair I alway thought they were testing waters here. And that they would not go anywhere with it. But I guess fandom actually shipping it somehow pushed them to continue this? Kinda wish they were more romantic into that. Yaz probably would fit more the Martha storyline than Martha did. With the unrequired love, sappy thing. But oh well - we will see how it evolves in upcoming two other seasons of Chibs Doctor.

People I know kept saying that Graham's story in this episode should have belonged to Ryan, but I always think that misses the point entirely. This episode WAS really powerful for Ryan because this episode really showed, probably not for the first time but most dramatically I think, that Grace lives on through Ryan, that Ryan has really inherited her spirit. He doesn't need to crave revenge here, because Grace raised him to process those emotions in a healthier way. The fact that Grace's killer was there but his main concern Graham IS an amazing story for him, its just more nuanced then I guess some people wanted.

And from the traditionalist h-phobes having to "see it every week" like I feel people tolerated Jack only because, he was only showing up for like two episodes every season, only had one kiss with Doc and mostly flirted with women + those people probably didn't care for side series. Like Chibs already got hate for supposedly bringing politics, because we have first girl Doctor here. I don't think they would "risk" another bs backlash. And the gender-swap was so drastic on itself that they didn't really want to touch romance for it. Like Jodie's Doctor is pretty childish, naive and very asexual for most part. I guess to keep the vibe from mostly aromantic (in season 10) Capaldi + the old Who, where Doctor was kinda more alien to his companions. Before watching - if I remember, for me this was kind underwhelming. There was a lot of filler in it and the finale was kinda bland? Also I disliked that Doctor once again is kind of inconsistent when it comes to revenge and death. Especially after Kerblam!, Arachnids and the Woman Who Fell. If I remember some people were disappointed for this to be the season finale, but for me it was never like that as we knew Resolution was coming (even if we thought it would still be Christmas Special around that time). Also about this season being episodic - I feel like they failed that. Like people did want a storyline but I didn't mind not having it, instead going back to the idea behind old Who. But I feel like, because episodes were longer - they should have modernised the concept and made each episode into small movie. There was a lot of empty time and a lot of big background shots, which did show some nice effects and scenography, but were too fillerish for me. In general still very mid season (which makes it the worst, cause all the other were from good to super good in my opinion - but good news I think I hated season 12 more and actually liked season 13).

I say this as someone who, on the whole, is a fan of this series, I'm not that into this episode. I see this as a perfectly serviceable episode overall, but a very underwhelming finale. It just doesn't feel like it has the enormous stakes or emotion that you want in a finale. However, the stuff with Graham is still fantastic and carries the episode so much. To me though, I feel like the upcoming special feels like a better finale, wrapping up the character arcs that had been running since the start of the season.

I can never put my fingure on WHY I dislike this era of Who or New Star Trek. IS it the writing? The characterization? The plotting? The way it delivered the message? But I think it comes down to that I just feel such a emotional disconnect with the episodes, and I dunno if it's my analytical brain not quite clicking with some story logic or the reasons for character motivations. Sometimes watching these shows is like a gear slipping in my brain and not clicking over. And frankly, that's frusterating, but I CAN'T just turn that off, so telling me to turn my brain off and enjoy something doesn't work. Nor do I even LIKE the idea of being required to NOT think about the things we consume. If you HAVE to do that to enjoy a show, then in my opinion, that show failed.

I do wish to piggyback off of your comments when doing the comparison between Doctor Who and Trek. Primarily by commenting about how you are correct and there is another description that I wish to point in your direction. Something that a lot of detractors of this era have done( in a similar vein to a director of the second of the Star Wars sequel trilogy ) is they accused chip no of being the worst thing to happen to the franchise and it killed the franchise for them( I'm being generous by not including my thoughts on this whole thing but I digress). It seems clear to me that Chibnel knew he couldn't "compete with master story teller Moffat" much like director Ryan Johnson knew that he couldn't pay off every single thing that JJ Abrams teased in the force awakens. So instead of trying to they decided that they were going to leave their own stamp on the franchise. And what also seems clear to me is the way that he chose to do that was by doing the non serialized storytelling. And since TNG followed by Voyager and Enterprise are my top two Star Trek shows(the latter are tied), I think you can see where my tastes lie. As for this episode itself, the Stenza are an intriguing concept and I thought that they were utilized well. Particularly when it seems that the doctor is trying to recover from the trauma of losing Bill. Which I think is emphasized with Ryan and Graham coming to terms with the events in the first episode of this season. And to me I think that that's one of the strengths of this particular group of companions. Because much like Amy and Rory were the doctor's family Ryan Graham and Yaz are as much the doctor's family as Amy and Rory were. I'm not going to get into spoilers but I can tell you that I rather enjoy where this particular story arc tends to go.
