The saddest news today of the loss of our pal Bernard Cribbins - Wilf Mott, amongst so many other roles in over a half-century career in television, radio, and in films. Your storytelling will always be with us, Bernard, as long as we have memories.

Personally, I've always thought of a Resolution as something that goes in one year and out the other. I like this story quite a bit and I seem to recall that critically it was pretty well received. I like the "junkyard" Dalek design. This was the only Doctor Who we got in 2019. Can't wait to see what you're going to dive into in Classic Who next. R.I.P. Bernard Cribbins!

The most surpising part of this episode was that chibnall remembers that Ryan has dyspraxia something that seems to have disappeared after the first episode, as a person with dyspraxia i wish it just disappeared, that would make things easier.

I was so heartbroken when I heard the news about Bernard Cribbins' passing. Wilf was the sweetest man in the series, I just straight away think back to his conversation with 10 in the bin-vocci spaceship when they were in space with the engines turned off. Just so many of those beautiful moments. He will be missed greatly. 💔

Glad Katrina and Paula enjoyed this one .Watching again it's better than I remember . Very sad news about Bernard Cribbins , he's been around for so long and done so much and I certainly can't remember not enjoying anything he was in . He could turn a relatively minor role into a memorable much loved character which of course is exactly what he did in Dr Who .

I really love watching you guys watching this. I loved this episode. One of the best directed episodes of Who ever. Really well written. Brings home the fact that the Dalek isn’t the casing. The “I am your pilot” brilliant. The Ryan and his dad scene is obviously outstanding. I get that The Doctor being less central bugs people. But this incarnation doesn’t need that time. Her presence is always felt and she has just as many “Doctor” moments. I really love this regeneration and I love seeing you guys enjoy it. Thanks for another great ep.

This is my favorite Dalek story after Dalek (1x6) in all of modern who. Those two stories are a testament to the fact that one Dalek is more effective and even scarier than entire armies or fleets like other stories have tried to show. For me, every Chibnall story with a classic monster, either with 13 or the other Doctors he's written for, has been the best in modern who. Great reaction!

This is one Chinall's better episodes, I have to say. But its because he does draw on the history and lore of the Whoniverse instead of doing his absolute best to mess about with it. Again Yaz is underutilized in this episode, which is something that will become more apparent in Season 12.

This and episode 1 are definitely the best two of series 11. It was a real drag though the fact that this was the only episode released in 2019 and we had to wait a full year for series 12. It's one big logistical criticism of the whole Chibnall run, is the fluctuating calendar (which was already all over the place before Covid). Look back and almost every year we got a new series like clockwork in the autumn - then with Chibnall running the show it started chopping and changing all over the place and with fewer episodes than before for characters and story arcs to bed in. Over Jodie's 5 years in the role, she has a lot less to her name compared to her direct predecessors; and they all got 12 or 13 episodes a series plus a Christmas special. Even Capaldi has more and he got a year off during his run because Moffat was spinning too many plates! Tennant: 47 eps (4 years), Smith: 44 (4 years), Capaldi: 40 (4 years), Jodie: 31 (5 years) And obviously quantity isn't everything (as demonstrated by Ecclestones perfect arc in series 1), but with a show as notoriously varied as Dr Who, it sure as hell helps.

So this is where a lot of DW fans and I differ. Because I personally really didn't like the overall writing of the last season, but I LOVED this special. I can't even say specifically what it is that makes it better. It's just something about the writing and the pacing and the humor and the action...it's so much TIGHTER! I genuinely think Chibnall learns from his mistakes, because I found the next series to be a lot better too. But I think a lot of people wrote him off completely after his first outing and that's a shame because it's an upward slope. Also, I think part of what made me appreciate this so much is that while I liked 90% of Moffat's writing, I felt one of his most egregious weak spots was Daleks. Chibnall's first Dalek story MASTERFULLY makes just a SINGLE Dalek absolutely terrifying, which is how it should be. Felt like a spiritually successor to Eccleston's first Dalek episode in that regard. Also also, I think the stuff with Ryan's dad is really good, which makes this feel more like a proper finale to last season than the actual finale.

I love that while Ryan was willing to forgive his father and try to make a relationship we also have Graham's reasonable reaction. He was not going to let the guy who keeps hurting Ryan near him. Companion wise it would be boring if it was always the Doctor and one companion, or two, or three. You change it up.

Yes, the throwaway thing about UNIT being disbanded was a shock but I'm sure they'll be back under RTD2. As ever, I love the vibe of this Doctor. It's hard to believe that some people vowed never to watch her, they are seriously missing out. "I feel like we feel that way about everyone's writing: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't." A very healthy attitude to have. Seems like with Who anything new gets met with some opposition, to varying degrees, and it's easier to be objective when looking back than as episodes are coming out. Especially with the broader tone changes, like the change in creative teams tends to bring. The fandom is a lot like the Doctor in that way: "Oh, you're redecorated! I don't like it."

Have to correct you as you said it several times: New Years *Day* special, not eve. Because otherwise there would have been a full year without an episode of Who and under the terms of the contract with the Terry Nation estate, they would have lost the right to use the Daleks (they can keep using them if they're in at least one episode a year, so you'll notice they always make an appearance, however fleeting).

@ftumschk
@ftumschk 2 года назад
The Dalek "contract" with Terry Nation's estate is an urban myth, I'm afraid. Steven Moffat didn't know of it, and he should know; not only is he one of the longest-serving Doctor Who showrunners, but his mother-in-law was Terry Nation's agent! As the _Doctor Who Companion_ says: "It's notable how many series of Classic Who don’t have Dalek stories in them at all. The Daleks appear in Seasons 1 to 4. There are no Dalek stories in Seasons 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20 (discounting a cameo in The Five Doctors), 23, 24 or 26. Tom Baker, the longest serving Doctor who starred in seven seasons, only had two Dalek stories... Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy had one Dalek story each."
@ClaireWW
@ClaireWW 2 года назад
@@ftumschk It's something for Modern who, not classic. And the statement by Moffat is not a denial there is a contract, just that that's not the reason they use them. There has yet to be a full year without Daleks. I maintain that is more than coincidence.
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 2 года назад
@@ClaireWW _"There has yet to be a full year without Daleks. Nothing is ruined about the show. On the contrary, in my eyes it was better in this era than ever before. A lot of people have been taken in by anti-propaganda and others just can't stand it when something doesn't live up to their expectations or their taste and then have to rail against it instead of waiting for it to live up to their expectations again and just begrudge others liking it. "Fun" isn't a word that has really applied to series 11 as a whole. Don't get me wrong, there's been loads of fun moments over the previous episodes, but most of Jodie Whittaker's first series has been incredibly po-faced and self-serious, which is a big part of why I didn't connect with it on first viewing (and arguably still don't). Chibnall thankfully took notice of this and the end result is that "Resolution" is an absolute blast and a highly entertaining ride. It's not perfect by any means, and I wouldn't exactly call it one of his strongest scripts, but I still really enjoy the episode. The return of the Daleks (or Dalek rather) plays a big part of this, as this is definitely the best Dalek story since...I dunno, "The Stolen Earth" I guess (RIP Bernard Cribbins). The main story does come about as a result of some contrived and rather nonsensical writing choices, but I can overlook the ridiculous justification for the Dalek literally pulling itself together when the stuff we get after it is so damn fun. The imagery of the Dalek puppeteering Lin by latching itself onto her nervous system is absolutely bonkers, and makes for some nice twisted body horror. The sequence of Dalek-Lin going on a rampage as it attempts to rebuild its casing is highly entertaining, straddling the line nicely between goofy and frightening, in large part thanks to Charlotte Ritchie's dual performance as the terrified archaeologist and the monster controlling her (on that note, I generally do like Lin as a character, and I though her and Mitch were really sweet and fun supporting character, which makes it a shame that the pair sort of fall out of focus later on). Jodie Whittaker's performance is fantastic too, and it really proves that she can really knock it out of the park when she's actually allowed to be the Doctor. Seeing the Doctor put on the back-foot during the whole cat-and-mouse chase elevates the tension and allows us to show how well this new incarnation can act when working under strenuous circumstances, and her confrontation with the Dalek after it finishes constructing its casing (a nice parallel to the Doctor welding her own screwdriver back in episode 1) is a great crackling scene. And the fun doesn't stop there either, as we get to see more scenes of the Dalek flying around, demolishing armies and spouting out some actually rather good dialogue. Even Segun Akinola gets in on the fun, turning out a big and bombastic new theme for the Daleks, which builds nicely off Murray Gold's work while still keeping his own identity. Considering how highly entertaining the whole Dalek subplot is, it's a real shame then that we have to keep interrupting it to deal with Ryan's reunion with his father and the emotional baggage that ensues. When you brought up people not liking this subplot, Katrina, I think what they're referring to is the fact that it doesn't gel with the stuff happening in the other half of the episode. We'll get a big scene of Allison from Ghosts slaughtering innocent bystanders or the Dalek blowing up a tank, and then we'll suddenly cut to a scene of Ryan calling out Aaron for being a neglectful POS. You can see how the two don't really fit together, watching "Resolution" is like watching a chef making a delicious looking trifle and then dumping an entire roast dinner into it - on their own they're absolutely delicious, but eating them both together is just weird and confusing. To their credit, Tosin Cole and Daniel Adegboyega give pretty good performances in their scenes together, and director Wayne Yip does an admirable job at making the tonal shifts work, but it still feels really messy. And the final scene in which the two storylines reach their resolution (haha) feels incredibly clumsy and mishandled. I get that you want the emotional catharsis of the reconciliation and having Aaron die would feel kind of mean-spirited, but I don't really like the idea that *Ryan* is the one who has to go to his dad and make up with him. It's not "The Idiot's Lantern" levels of bad, but it still leaves a rather bad taste in the mouth, as does the fact that the Doctor puts Aaron and Ryan at very real risk of death and doesn't get chewed out for it. There are other issues I have with "Resolution" - the nonsensical decision to include the other guardians and do nothing with them, the fact that Yaz yet again gets nothing to do, the inclusion of the most egregious and laughably textbook example of the "bury your gays" trope. But in the long run, these are issues that I can (mostly overlook) as I generally really enjoy "Resolution", warts and all. It's dumb empty spectacle for the most part, but it's fun spectacle nonetheless, and it brings Jodie Whittaker's tumultuous first series as the Doctor to a mostly satisfying close, and leaves us hopeful for what the future might bring. Whether it would actually deliver, well, that's for another time

This is an episode that Chibnall dislikers (the non racist and sexist ones) actually don’t mind. I’m part of that group. I don’t like the UNIT/Brexit joke at all, and the wifi family moment is just so cringe (and kinda memed on by all the fandom), and I wasn’t a massive fan of the Dalek vs the army - which is actually most people favourite moment. I think the shakey camera and random fight in the middle of nowhere is off to me. Alas though, majority of us really enjoy the Ryan’s dad story. The Dalek story feels unique and original. The whole cast has great chemistry. And the quirky writing that doesn’t always land, works quite well for once. It’s a fun story, and definitely feels more like a finale than last weeks story. IMDB scores sadly are so skewed by negative review bombers that it is untrustworthy. And definitely not representative of the people who watch the show to enjoy it, instead of only watching it in order to hate it. Chibnalls era is far far from perfect in my eyes. But those episode scores are ridiculously low. There are a few episodes in the era I consider to be 9/10s that are super low, and it’s a real shame.

Oh, and this is the beginning of Chibnall giving up the coveted Christmas day slot on the BBC to switch it to New Year's Day instead, when hardly anyone would be watching. Even RTD made some snarky comments about that on Instagram back in the day, which makes with think we'll likely get Christmas specials back under RTD2's watch. P.S. For whatever it's worth, I don't really care about Christmas personally, as I'm not Christian, so it's only a secular holiday for me, but from a TV programming perspective, I think it was a really poor choice. 🤷‍♀

I'm also not a Christian, but we do enjoy Christmas... a lot! For that reason, I didn't see many of the Christmas specials on they day of broadcast. Instead, we were busy doing "family" things and/or sleeping off the Christmas dinner ;) For me at least, New Year's Day worked better.

Do people actually still watch "event TV" any more, at the broadcast time? I think it's a minor thing. Plus duribg the RTD era this became an in-universe joke (fittingly transmitted by the late great Bernard Cribbins) that London always gets invaded by aliens at Christmas.

I really loved this story I thought it was the best Dalek episode since the Classic days. It's good to see The Daleks actually killing people again which lacked during the Moffat era so Chibnall was on top form with them the only bit I didn't like was the whole Ryan and Dad thing it was holding up the story and that scene should had been cut out and it's a pity you edit out the best bit out of your reaction the part were the Dalek battles the tanks which was my favourite part of the whole episode.

I do have a reason why I do not like this era at all though right now I cannot discuss it. I will say, this episode had me interested until The Doctor whips out a microwave and that stops a Dalek. I love you two though!
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 2 года назад
TBF, the microwave is used to destroy a Dalek casing made mostly of earthly scrap metal, not reinforced Dalekanium. What bugs me most about that part of the story is that it's not actually the Doctor who comes up with the idea, but Ryan's dad. It's one of Chibnall's occasional tics to NOT have the Doctor come up with a solution, perhaps because he wanted to be seen as an "equal opportunities writer", but it felt forced to me - the Doctor's the genius scientist in this equation, after all. This was meant to be a Doctor Who special, Chris, not a "Ryan's dad special" :)

@@ftumschk How I understood it was that Aaron came up with the oven part of the plan, and the Doctor came up with a way to actually get those parts ON the Dalek. So more than one person contributed to the plan. Fits in with the "flat team structure" theme of Series 11. Whether the viewer likes things that way is, of course, up to the viewer. 😀

For me Chibs era was weird. I loved a lot of the episodes like Rosa and it takes you away but some just missed the mark due to me just not enjoying a lot of the stories plots compared to how structured most of Moffats run was. His holiday specials felt the same way but the reason I only enjoyed resolution has to do with something chibnall decides to do plot wise that I won’t say on the off chance the gals decide to read this, but overall a good portion of chibs run was super enjoyable.

It was a good episode, but for a special, in my opinion not great when you compare it to recent (at the time) specials. I liked the fact we got something new with the Daleks both shell & type. Don't like how suddenly Ryan has feelings for his Dad, I don't buy it for a second. I can believe him trying to save his Dad, but not what he said, he could of saved him without the bullsh*t.

Not super-fond of Chibnall's repetitive game of let's-try-and-make-you-care-for-the-character(s), only to kill them off pretty immediately or brutally traumatize them in some way. It's even worse with the 'Bury Your Gays' moment with the security guard for me, though. Definitely makes me feel pretty spikey about the story. 😠

@@denmaroca2584 For me, the issue isn't so much the "kill your gays" trope, but why Chibnall thought it necessary to bring up this minor character's sex-life in the first place. Regardless of sexual orientation, I can't imagine anyone casually announcing their sexuality to a complete stranger within literal seconds of meeting them, particularly not if they're a security guard on duty. It's a jarringly incongruous moment at best, and the line itself is pretty weird: _"Most secure digits in Yorkshire... that's what I tell me boyfriend, anyway"._ Could that possibly be the first ever handjob joke in Doctor Who?

To be fair the reason why you guys like Chibnall's run and Jodie is because the writting is focused on your kind of audience. Your generation and generation's current event issues. I mean anything I say would just be a reiteration of what's already been said particularly if you side the "Nerdrotic's" fan base pov. Writting aside I also think Jodie was very sub par for the role. She wasn't Horrible. No. But for me, her personality was very lack luster and reminded me of that of a 3rd grade school teacher. Patronizingly lame. Weird facial expressions. She never watched the show. She never studied the role. So when the script throws in a joke for her to say (a Doctory joke) she usually just spits it out fast like a mutter and goes right back into being mellow dramatic again. Because she doesn't get it. She doesn't understand the history and it shows in her character. She's doing it because it's what the script says and it's what she's been directed to do. Very impostery. So much so imo that it's held her back from evolving the character to mix with her own persona the way David and Matt and Capoldi had. But ok... you're on board with the woke stuff and the gender agenda plots the show was obviously taylored around. There's still something on the horizon come next season that really puts the ...um... nail in the coffin. They went too far with "creative liberty". I don't want to spoil it. You'll get there. For me it's unforgivable as well for many others.
