Paula is really good at connecting the dots I think. She must watch a lot of TV or something :) But to be fair, "I'm pregnant" and "suddenly a mysterious child appears" happen quite close together in the episode haha. It's a bit like in _Diablo III_ when a mysterious stranger shows up and then Deckard Cain randomly starts giving you the backstory of Tyrael and it's kiiiind of hard not to suspect who the stranger is haha.

💯% plus it’s ridiculously obvious because it wouldn’t make sense for him to die in the first episode of a new series, I feel like maybe it would’ve been more interesting if it was just a regeneration but then how would they do that without seeing him change

NJH that was my thought if it was a true regeneration; they do the regeneration off the bat, then the rest of the season was leading up to that moment, with the final minutes of episode 12/13 coming full circle to finish the regeneration/“kill him off”

Wayne Sasuta yeah I’d actually like that as an intro episode of a last series of a Doctor like it shows them arriving to a new companion/or their current companion dying and them regenerate but not show who it is and then end that series going back to that moment

You're right, I enjoyed all the companions here. I think Steven Moffat is great at writing multiple companions so that they each get a chance to shine. I think it also helps when they are introduced gradually instead of all at once.

Well, you can't fault Steven Moffat's ambition. It's no "Eleventh Hour", but this is still a fantastic opening. The shock of the Doctor's death is a brilliant hook for series 6, and a brilliant way to get the theories going (i.e. the astronaut's identity, and how the Doctor is going to get out of this). The new TARDIS dynamic is excellent, and it's clear that the four actors are growing more and more comfortable with their roles, showing great chemistry with each other which allows them to pull off all the jokes and emotional scenes perfectly. The new monsters are a brilliantly designed addition to the show and have an absolutely brilliant and creepy concept behind them - after all, how can you fight an enemy if you keep forgetting that they even exist? End everything with an absolutely shocking cliffhanger (yeah, starting a series with a two-parter is itself a pretty ballsy move), and you're left with a truly exhilarating episode to start off this very bold and ambitious story

Christian Wise I like this two parter so much more than the eleventh hour. Its scary, it’s dark, the monster is brilliant, the acting is improved, The Doctor looks great, River is amazing, so is Canton, it looks high quality, well shot, the astronaut is awesome and it’s got plenty of shocks and creepy moments. I find the eleventh hour a bit overrated

I always think reactors need at least a 2 or 3 week gap between seasons. Normal viewers have to wait months or a year for new Doctor Who! I'm glad you're back with season 6 though!

_Doctor Who_ needs them more than most! Who knew at the time that the season finale where the main companion becomes a Time God, the secondary companion dies and is resurrected, and the first new doctor in 10 years dies and regenerates, is the least "Well That Was A LOT" finale of them all...

This is a strangely compelling episode, even with the death of the doctor at the beginning, there's no real monster... and that element of storytelling comes again in some more episodes this season.

Just before this episode came out, the official DW Magazine had different covers one issue, featuring either the Doctor, Rory, Amy or River and a tagline saying something like, "One of them will die". Obviously, it was the Doctor, but it was still a major shocker. When he started regenerating, everyone was like, "NO!! WAIT!! YOU CAN'T!!!", as there had been no publicity about Matt Smith leaving. This also proved what the 10th Doctor said in "The End of Time", that he can still die if he's killed while regenerating. Finally, as I'm a massive sci-fi fan, it was really cool seeing both William Morgan Sheppard and Mark Sheppard in a DW episode. They've both been in so many episodes of so many other shows like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Seaquest DSV, Babylon 5 etc.

Here we go series 6. Fun fact the man who played old Canton William Morgan Sheppard is Mark Sheppard father who played younger Canton. William Morgan Sheppard passed away last year which is very sad. Also this episode was dedicated to Elizabeth Sladen who played Sarah Jane as she passed away from cancer on 19th of April 201. Four days before the episode aired. Not an easy time for the fans at the beginning of series 6. Plus in this episode there is a clue that something is wrong, it subtle and hidden in plain sight. I didn't notice and don't think many people did either. Great reaction and can't wait to take the crazy train which is series 6.

Breaks are better! When originally aired, we waited months or longer between seasons. I think it gives more weight to the content. Binging habits are completely understandable but kinda kill the drama I think.

I'm in favour of you taking the breaks between seasons, since that's in keeping with the rhythm of the thing in the first place, so keep doing what you're doing. I mean imagine how harsh Paula would have been on Moffat /without/ the little break... Much as I think of season 6 as a groundbreaking season in the whole history of the show (and I've been watching since 1973 :)), I thought Paula gave a fair critique of this episode. Interesting.

Ah series 6.... I have so many things to say, but obviously I can't say much until you guys finish it all. As for this episode? A very good episode that set up the most interesting, ambitious and dynamic story arc the show had ever attempted up to this point and would ever attempt in fact. BTW, did Paula notice the "faux Tardis" from "The Lodger".... So many questions that get your mind racing with theories and answers. The beginning of series 6 was certainly an exciting time to be a Doctor Who fan! Looking forward to the second part of this story. One thing I have to mention though is the Doctor's antics during the cold open. He's trying to get Amy and Rory's attention, but then just sends them letters to get them to where he need them to be. Sure it's entertaining and all, but why didn't the Doctor just do that in the first place? There was no need for the buffoonery at the start. This is the start of the writers making 11 weird and act like an idiot for the sake of it and it gets tiresome. It was already there in S5, but it was in small doses so it didn't bother me. With that being said, Matt Smith is still mostly great as the 11th Doctor. My issues with his era from this point onward have very little to do with Smith and have a lot more to do with the writing.

This is one of my fav 11th Doctor eps. W. Morgan Sheppard was such an exceptional actor. My fav performance of his is the diabolical psychopath Dr. Zito from the original MacGyver episodes, "Deadly Dreams," and "Lesson in Evil."

One thing bugs me that doesn't come up often enough with people rewatching or new to the material is the inconsistency of the age he tosses out seeming to fudge it with each new set of friends. Whether it's the writers being lazy and conceptually defaulting to just under 1000 as a graspable number or if "900" became the Dr's "29/39" style vanity. 1 - 8 gave pretty consistent answers, at least relative to time since Gallifrey departure, setting aside the true age upon leaving. Which is just a long way of saying the Dr topped out somewhere north of 1000 before the 9th incarnation and is reporting whatever they wish with each new interaction. :P

I think it's the writing. They took a different course with NuWho, and you could probably attribute the inconsistent numbers (that eventually skyrocket) to 1) he's a time traveler and 2) he is more a lonely god rather than simply a member of another species. Also 3) the writers trying to top themselves over and over again.

Regarding breaks, this is your channel and you’re smart enough to know what works for you, and I’m fine with it. You may have already factored this in, but I’d like to make a suggestion if I may regarding Patreon. Since you charge per show, a break could result in a loss of new Patrons. If you’re going to expand your show base, it might be helpful to include some or all your shows under a certain price tier. You’re also a dollar more per month than your competition. And as you probably know, a break can cause a loss of interest. Of course these are all business decisions without anything else factored in. Just some thoughts. 😘

Here it is.... the season with the greatest ambition! One of my favorites... but is fairly criticized by the Fandom... it's no season 4 or 5 or 9, but it is better than 3 or 2 or 7... this and season 10 are my guilty pleasure...
