Knowing that Morissette wrote this song for his father touches me deeply. I had the same situation before for years but Iwe made up after my mother died. We travelled to Europe together with my older brother and that was fun. He passed away 6 years after that and I still miss him and my mom.

Not long ago she had a falling out with her parents, her dad, so I believe she is singing it for them and for all who are going through the same. I believe in due time they will be okay.
Yes. And to think that without Mori's father, she wouldn't be probably who she is today. Her father (a musician himself) thought her everything about music starting from when she was still very young. The saying "you can't have your cake and eat it too" very aptly describe Mori's situation now. Filipino parents are very protective of their daughters to the point that, if viewed from a Westerner's eyes, it's being possessive, not protective. That even after reaching the age of 21 where one is supposed to be independent, one is still treated as a kid whose life decisions can't be seriously considered, let alone trusted. I just hope that one day in a not so distant future, Mori and her parents can be family again. Right now the relationship of being in a family is just not there. So sad and hard.
I’m Filipino. Sounds like the dad wanted her to do something but she chose to do something else so he got butt hurt and decided to ignore her. The negative of too much pride. Agree with the other comment that no matter what age you are Filipino parents will always think they know what’s best for you haha.

I love the song... I have lost count of the times I heard it. I think it's awesome... everything about it... The melody, the arrangement, the lyrics, all the bits. It hit me hard. After having said that I have to confess that a good friend of mine.. A professional composer who has had hits to his name told me that the US market does not react well to the phrase, "I love u" specially as its title and main hook/chorus. If this is true (and I hope it's not) then it will probably do well in the Philippines but it will not take off in the US market. The US market is not averse to the sentiment of loving someone, just the act of having the words,,, "I love u" in the chorus and title. I hope my buddy is wrong.

The song is meant for her father, they had a falling out last year as he he did not approve of Mori’s relationship with Dave. She was painfully hurt when he posted in social media about their disagreement. Her father was the one who trained her how to sing and supported and pushed her to become the very hard working singer/artist that she is. It was just sad that he aired out the issues in social media. Filipinos by nature are very closed knit families and unfortunately broadcasting the issues publicly is like a painful death.
