Reaction: Nebraska's disastrous OT loss to Illinois spoils 400th sellout, Big Ten opener

Illinois stormed into Memorial Stadium and ruined the 400th consecutive with a 31-24 overtime victory against Nebraska that opened old wounds for Matt Rhule and the Huskers. Connor and Mitch are here on the day after to offer their reaction.
The Nebraska defense could not get off the field. Tony White's group got gouged in the second half. What's wrong with the Blackshirts? The OT possession, as usual, was a mess for Nebraska. Its offensive line collapsed in the second half while dealing with key absences. The Illini found a way to get to Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola and bother the freshman, who still did enough to direct a win.
We get into the late third-down pass by Raiola that just missed, the decision by Rhule to attempt a field goal with three minutes left and the special teams meltdown that must be addressed before the Huskers get deeper in conference play.

People need to chill. Illinois is really good football team. There is always stuff we need to get better at. All aspects of special teams was terrible besides Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda. Cost us the game. But Illinois won that game. They fought and made the plays when they needed to. Good game Illinois

You're not wrong but at the same time.... There are us problems that were supposed to be fixed. It's like watching Cosgroves defense out there. Black shirts could not get off the field against Northern Iowa and lo and behold a better team did the same to us. Our defense needs to get more dynamic and unpredictable and bring pressure.,.. because it's obvious we can't just sit back and let teams drive for 10 minutes on us... And expect to have any gas left in the tank in the fourth quarter. Our defense played the same game 2 games in a row

For God’s sake, someone find us a kicker. I’ve held my breath on every single field goal and PAT for the last however many years. Should not be what you have to worry about in a D1 program. Should not have to that believe our kicker, who had one of the best high school state championship performances of all time, will more than likely miss this field goal and that K2 is no more reliable.

I thought Luke Altmeyer was equally impressive ( I am not a fan of either team). He is cool under pressure and makes accurate, appropriate throws for the situation. It will be very interesting to see how Illinois does at Penn State this week.

Luke Altmeyer is an excellent QB. He is going to make a lot of defenses look bad. Illinois has big WRs who can catch the football. They couple that with a physical running game. Illinois is trouble.

Bielema's teams play hard-nosed, physical football. This goes back to his Wisconsin days. They wear down teams. You do not want to get into a close game with them down the stretch. It looked to me that Illinois was taking control of the game with about 10 minutes to go. They were running the ball with success as they like to do. It looked like they would score. But around the 8-minute mark Nebraska made a great play with the strip sack. That turned around the momentum. Nebraska moved the ball downfield for about 5-6 minutes before the FG try. That was good football. I thought the Huskers would win it. The FG missed, but fundamentally Nebraska played a pretty good 60-minute football game. Illinois is a rough bunch, and they have an excellent, cool QB who has given them an extra dimension. Illinois is going to give a lot of teams problems.

He looked like a freshman because his o-line turned into paper mache the last two drives. He has two interceptions on the season because his receivers can't make a damn catch when it hits their hands. He las a loss on his hands because his kicker can't make a 38 yd fg. Dylan is the least of our problems. Damn near 300 yds and 3 tds (should've been 4) in his first Big Ten start does not scream "well, he's still a true freshman".

Hope they bounce back. In reviewing Dylan’s throw at end of game, it was perfect for a faster receiver. Not a slow tight end. He was so open. Need to use the freshman as our FG kicker. We have an answer

I am not a Nebraska fan. but I was shocked when I kept hearing Nebraska people saying like it was automatic they would be 7-0 going to OSU. Do Nebraska fans live in some fantasy world? This is a team that hasn't made a 6 win bowl game in almost a decade. Sure they are better, but there are NO gimmie games for Nebraska.

It wasn’t just Nebraska fans saying as much. They were ranked in the top 25 after CU and favored in all 7 games before the season started. Nobody was saying it would be automatic or a gimme, but there was no reason think just because teams from 2017 and whatever couldn’t make a bowl that this team couldn’t. There’s literally nothing linking this team to those other than the boogeyman stats that ppl want to harp on.

Right. If that FG was made, there was about an 80% chance (maybe more) that Nebraska would win. Nebraska looked much improved from last year. Raiola is a top-flight QB. Ruhle will develop a team around him.

A 3 man front is hard to both contain the run and get pressure on the QB. A ton of the time, the ends were jumping inside instead of setting the edge. We need to set the edges better, even if we use a linebacker to do it, but this can’t keep happening. The other point I want to make is how 2 weeks in a row, a receiver got the ball snatched out of their hands. They need to start working on their hand and forearm strength.

Kudo’s to Mitch and Connor for being legit with the penalties and not use it as why Nebraska lost. Refs overall had a bad game. They were embarrassing for the conference. Maybe the crowd noise affected them also. It was my first Nebraska experience and I have to say that y’all are spoiled. The absolute best home field advantage I’ve ever seen. The stuff between the end of the 3Q and start of 4Q is totally insane! The Nebraska fan base is the absolute best and it’s not even close. I can’t count how many fans came up to me and seemed genuinely interested in if I enjoyed my time and had fun and this was AFTER the game!!! Loved the experience and with my Illini getting an unexpected W, it was even better still. Nebraska is still a 8-9 win team this year if they stay healthy and come mentally ready to play.

Scoring 24 points on offense in the B1G should get the W almost any week of the season. While it is a continued 2nd half drop off for the offense, and special teams continues to be un-special, to me this lose falls squarely at the feet of the defense. If the Blackshirts don't hand over their shirts on their own, the coaches should demand them back until they get this ship righted as their performance was embarrassingly bad. Second week in a row that the defense looked out of sync and sloppy. The penalties just added insult to injury. I wasn't happy about the officiating, but its the B1G, its to be expected and has to be overcome through better play.

This was a very tight game, it could have very easily had gone the other way. Team stats are very comparable. No team left this stadium a loser except in points, Nebraska is still a very formidable team, Rhule is still a good coach. Is it 1990 Huskers, no, but it's a strong team that is going to a bowl game this year.

Disgusted by the Coaching. Out coached Again. No Kicker, it was the back up. 1st and 5 on the 5. We throw out of bounds. Stupid. Why not run 3 times for the TD? Settled for the 3 pts. 3rd and 4 at midfield. Run the ball twice and play for the win when we are ahead by 7 points. They pass and punt for the return back to where they were. Coaches are not learning that running in these positions keeps the opponents defense on the field and allows our defense to rest, where backups drop off from injured starters like Tommy Hill. Basically about Time Management and Managing the game is poor. Gave the game away in my opinion. Just Stupid.

I wish I saved my RU-vid comments about how our o-line depth wouldl be our biggest issue..... As it has been for almost 20 years... If not, number one, 1A. At Tackle we were relying on one guy who was always hurt.... And another guy who came back from an injury. They are both gone. I know getting o line from the portal is difficult.... But we should have overpaid to get some mature bodies on this roster. We are stockpiling 20 DBS but already we have nearly nobody left to fill in any further injuries and we just started conference play. A massive oversight.

Long time husker fan here, I never understand how everyone so early was calling a 7-0 start this season just because we added some key players. Things take time. This seasons floor is 6-6 clinching a bowl game with a ceiling of 8-4, I will be happy with 7-5. One game at a time. Husker fans stay focused and realistic. F Nebraska, been a fan since the 80s since I was a child. Nebraska has only been able to spoil hope while you watch Colorado give their fans the time of their lives with hope. I am so sick of the Scott Frost tyoe special teams, the neglect of the kicking game, the BS handling of the end game and wtf endings. This seems to be a regular time at Nebraska, F the light show, F the balloons, F the Drones show, F the sell out BS, just f-ing do what team is supposed to do in the end game. Make the places that seal the win, otherwise just go away into the mediocrete of the teams that never sniff the playoffs or Championships. I played college football and have watched for years, this is just a team and program that simply can not find their way to a win, no matter who the game opponent.

You can start by getting a coach that can wear his hat straight in interviews. Little things tell a lot. Until they go back to bigger, stronger players that live in the weight room and eat 2 pound steaks for dinner, they will remain unable to compete at the highest level. Study film of Michael Booker. Where is the bump and run coverage? They're too small. Put #54 at DT or DE and make him study film of Grant Wistrom. The guy can't block.

Losing the field position game on defense and calling it “bend don’t break” is copium. Special teams needs an overhaul. Not a single well-executed play on ST in a whole Big10 game and looking suspect against FCS spec. teams units is unacceptable. Can’t wait for all of Frost’s O-linemen to be gone. If they’re not injured 50%+ of the year, they’re blowing 50%+ of their assignments moving in super slow mo. They have to know where bodies are buried to STILL have starting positions at a Big10 school.

The only people that perceived their strenghts are sad;y the koolaod drinkers, the people that get clicks from the Husker brand and the people that hope on thoughts not reality. This team was revealed to be the same team we have seen for years, Some good but terrible endings. Rhule is just proving to be another coach that is dealing with the same curse. Every facet of the coaching and playing failed in this game and Illinios exposed that we are nothing more than a top 70 challenger to be in the top 50.

Well most of County wasn't surprised after only winning 5 games last season. NOT you Mitch & Connor but ask yourself why fans thought we would win, after hearing going to be good every season. #1 PROBLEM is "Mr Spokesman" for Nebraska last decade + who sits on RU-vid every off season telling us how great we will be.😂 TIME FOR CHANGE like anything else starts at the top. Malachi Coleman needs to be playing, not a red shirt. Wake up and put the best playmakers on the field. Riola needs targets to hit. O line needs to take a big step up to be aggressive in the big 10. Defensive looked lost with no hype like previous weeks prior. Enough of excuses!! Haters can hate. Nebraska football under Matt Rhule shows promise. Nebraska played a great game! Illinois is much stronger than N-people knew. Either way, only 1 loss and should N end the season with 3-losses, they have improved “materially” and are in a Bowl game. Get right backing your team!

Stop with the penalty excuses, both Coordinators for NU got schooled, good luck with that HC gig White 😎 Whatever you do Rhule, make sure you put all the weight of the teams success on your Freshman QB's arm. Do not, and I repeat, do not actually try and establish a running game. Score in 4 plays, and rush that Defense back out there on the field... ...brilliant game plan in the BIG!!! I think Bill Busch lives like 4 miles from you, he is an actual "Special Teams" coach.... ....Foley is not! This team will be LUCKY to win 6 games this season.... Can the love affair with Tony White please be over now? 😂 He ain't going anywhere to coach major D1 college football with a scheme like that. Hopefully, Mitch is right, and it's more a Rhule call there with the current defensive scheme/identity. Van Poppel can't redshirt. Ed Foley may be one of the worst coaches in the history of sports. Terrible kick coverage, terrible kicking, Alvano is trash, the backup is trash, Buschini kicked another ball the wrong direction. Not to mention that it's getting progressively worse across the board for special teams. At this point, I'm not entirely convinced he isn't shaving points. 😂
