As you may have noticed, "Romanticide" describes a relationship that goes wrong, with lies, betraying trust, and destroying dreams and hopes invested over the years. And the shout at the end is like a release from this state. Many of us have gone through something like this (me - relatively recently), so I easily relate to the message of the song. It is obvious to me that Floor concentrated on the 10 months she was in the band until this concert (she became part of the band in the second part of the world tour "Imaginaerum") to make every song in the setlist "her own", bringing accents and creative interpretations everywhere. As in "Ghost Love Score" where she made her contribution through the vocal-acrobatic sequence at the end, in "Romanticide" she was decisively involved in the final slide with Marco (in the studio version only Marco participated vocally .. ). And there are other "pearls" of this kind in the Wacken 2013 concert, which I am sure you will discover in time, together with us ..

Is this just going to get better? Pretty much. One of the best things about Nightwish songs is they're all different. There's no formula. When Tuomas feels a song, he writes it until it's done no matter what length it ends up. There are surprises galore, which make every performance so interesting. Also, you can see how much each band member is enjoying performing. I've liked a lot of singers over the years (I'm 78), but since Floor came along whenever I hear another singer I think, well, not as good as Floor. This woman has ruined me for other singers, and I love it. Bit of trivia: Tuomas was going to be a biologist until he attended a Metallica concert. 😊

I think you should have a look at the opener for their Wacken set, "Dark Chest of Wonders". They come out with all guns blazing and just don't let up for almost 2 hours. It was the introduction of most of the people there to Floor Jansen with Nightwish and she grabbed everyone by the throat and didn't let go - and nobody complained. BTW - you are quickly becoming one of my favorite reactors. Nice work.

Well it's not that they got a choice in that. Alice Cooper just finished on another stage and as far as I know Nightwish was the last band playing on the 2 day festival. So they had to go hard or go home. Toumas said in the docu to the tour that you don't do anyone a favour if you play a slow ballad at 11pm. Everdream was probably the slowest they could go withou losing the audience.

This song is like a Coffee with Red Bull on steroids 🤘❤‍🔥🤘. Floor can do the D6, E6, F6 head voice soprano, but she can also dig down into contralto ranges, plus she can throw in some death metal growls and screams in the C2-D2 ranges. On top of that, she makes you feel the music. The “scream” at the end is called a glissando, going from low to high and back, for classical trained singers this is an exercise to warm up the vocal cords, so Floor will do this probably every day before breakfast Jukka Is an exceptional drummer , but wait, when you meet his friend and current Nightwish drummer Kai "The Human Metronome", or in my book Kai "The Machine Gun" Hahto Thank You Eric !!! I love in this performance Floor hands it off to Emppu and backs away and is back there just vibing and let’s him have the spotlight. The first song of the set is Dark Chest of Wonders and the first time a majority of people had seen her and when you watch that performance it’s hard to believe she was very very nervous (according to her). She was with the band for 10 months at this time . My wife and I saw Nightwish at HOB in Orlando 2 weeks after she stepped in and we knew she was special! We had seen the band with both Tarja and Annette and it was obvious she was the one. Man the buzz in the crowd after the show was palpable.

You're pronounciation of Floor's name was spot on by the way. Kudos to you for showing Emppu some love. I totally agree with you when you say that Emppu's guitar is like his voice. They are indeed very skilled musicians each, and a really great band together. Emppu is great, and very patient and humble, as often his role can be just humble chugging. Luckily he gets to shred too every now and then. Marco is a frontman caliber rockstar, an excellent vocalist and an awesome bassist all in one. And he participated is songwriting too every now and then. Tuomas obviously a rare talent in composing, and also knows very well how to write for the bandmembers he has. Jukka, sure, very good and especially passionate drummer, very entertaining to watch. The current drummer Kai Hahto is said to be slightly better technically, but not quite the showman Jukka is. Floor being Floor, quite probably among the best in the world, remarkably versatile and emotionally strong. Troy is just massively skilled with all his many instruments and widens the sound of the band a ton. And yes, it does get better, and wider in scope. The latest album, Human Nature, is much more progressive and peak Nightwish.

Minor correction. When she joined the band it’s true she only had 48 hours to learn the set list. However, that was in late September 2012. Wacken was 9 or 10 months later. Check out Buenos Aires 2012 if you want to see Ghost Love Score after 2.5 months with the band. Edit. When comparing Jukka (who had to leave the band due to his insomnia) to Kai (who replaced him), Marko likened Jukka’s style to John Bonham, and Kai to Ian Pace. Elsewhere the comparison of Sith Lord to Jedi Knight has been used.

@@TheWyldesidewithEricClark For clarity my intent was to be informative, not critical, and no, I did NOT take you reply as defensive in ANY way. Just echoing the earlier "no worries" comment. For your own edification, you might take a look at "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours." It is a documentary (on RU-vid, last time I checked) of that tour, with a focus on Floor's arrival. Also on RU-vid, a video entitled "The evolution of Ghost Love Score" that is HIGHLY illuminating. Please note, these are not suggestions for reactions, just for your own interest. The RU-vid video will likely leave you even MORE impressed with Floor. Speaking of Floor, on her channel is a video called "NIghtwish singer reacts to Ghost Love Score". She provides insights and background of that performance. This is ALSO HIGHLY illuminating, and will leave you more impressed with Floor. Additionally, for comparison, you might want to look at Ghost Love Score from "The End of an Era" (the same show with High Hopes) to see it as originally composed, and the way it was originally performed by Tarja. That one you MIGHT want to save for a reaction should you choose to explore earlier vocalists. Up to you (obviously). It is VERY different, vocally. Finally, If I seem a little enthusiastic, consider that I have only been aware of this band (or Floor) since March of '21, and I am STILL obsessed, and giddy at the at the opportunity to share them with someone new.

Make sure you view the ones with the subtitles/lyrics. The words REALLY matter there. Remember you WILL need to do your homework there. Much as the story you told about your wife (i am very sorry for your loss) and the emotions you went through, Poet and the Pendulum equally is a song about heartbreak and the gamut of emotions it brings. The Nightwish Army has seen many a grown man moved to tears with this one. Be forewarned. And be sure to keep asking the Army if you are ready for Poet.

Floor had been on tour with the band about 10 months before this show. They were in the US (Denver) when the previous lead singer could not perform. They called Floor as a fill in on the tour. She had 48 hours to learn the set list before her first show in Seattle. They finished their tour in the Americas and returned to Europe, where they are very popular, this being one of the first shows with Floor there. She officially became a member of the band shortly after this show. This whole show is incredible, and there’s more to discover beyond that. If you want to see how she introduced herself to most of the crowd as the lead for Nightwish, check out Dark Chest of Wonders from this show. She clutched their souls and didn’t let up. This was song 11 of 15. Enjoy the journey. I sure have.

And she were really nervous about this First big GIG in their Homecontinent, bcs the Change in Vocals was taking in mixed over here in Europe. Outcome is obviously - they blast it off, Concert is one of their Legacy now.You already mentioned, they fought the Flu nearly all Time on this Tour. I always break it down to an Keyfact for me: Fun and Passion. There are countless super gifted, trained and professional Musicians, Nightwish as Band want to transport the Fun and Passion they have when playing Live more than other i know and saw live. Here for the ride man, here for the ride. As I understand it, when Jukka leans down on his drums, while not playing (like in High Hopes) its not necessarily due to a migrane - it's to take himself out of the picture for the other instruments hilighted to shine. It's why Floor steps back often when her vocals are over and someone else is highlighted. This band doesn't play with ego - they do precisely what's needed for each song, nothing more, nothing less. It's all about the music. But, they do check on each other, especially during certain emotional songs - like with Tuomas during The Poet and the Pendulum (you'll get to this one eventually). Can't wait for you to get to experience Troy, their multi-intrumentalist and their current drummer, Kai Hahto. 7 Days To The Wolves Live at Wembley is a great one for all members, with Kai on drums there. He was a friend of Jukka's and took over when Jukka moved to manage the band due to his health. Just some info here - the opener for this Wacken show was Dark Chest of Wonders. Romanticide was later in the set. Ghost Love Score was song 13 of 15, I believe. I found Nightwish about 8 months ago, and am still quite bummed I've lived so many of my 42 years without their music in my life. It's always awesome to see others discovering their music. They are truly one of the best & tightest bands out there. I can't wait for you to continue through Nightwish's catalog of music. All are different, but unmistakably Nightwish. With me, each song I discovered next was my new favorite. So many amazing songs/performances I can't wait for you to discover! If you'd like to get a look at Floor's husband's band, Sabaton, I would maybe start with Christmas Truce or Bismark - official videos. Most of Sabaton's songs are about real war history. The drummer, Hannes Van Dahl is Floor's husband. They are from Sweden, and more power metal type music, and they are awesome! Christmas Truce has an awesome guest part sung over the credits by Floor too. Both of these videos look like film clips. Very well done. Apologies for my blathering. It's why I don't comment much, I just lurk. Brevity is not a strength of mine, obviously lol! Gabriel's list won't steer you wrong. Storytime, I believe, is next if you move by that list. Greetings from a humble member of the NW Army & a neighbor down in Sweet Home Alabama. Blessings friend! Also - what you shared about your wife, I can only imagine. My husband is my twin flame, and my imperfect perfection. I would be lost without him. Sounds like you had with your wife what my husband and I have. Words ring so hollow when speaking of such things. Too many have left us with too many songs left in them unsung. Your wife will always have your hand, and is always with you. I can offer no other words, save those. G-d Bless, friend. PS - when you get to Yours Is An Empty Hope, be sure the do the version that is Live from Wembley. The others are great too, but the audio is best on Wembley, and you can better hear what each is doing vocally, which is important for you to discover yet another facet of Floor's voice. Wembley is the one to do when you get to that one. Here for all of it!

You overlooked one crucial aspect when Jukka crouches down. If it was just to get himself out of the picture, he could easily make himself even smaller and yet he holds his arms over his head while doing so. Well... she had been singing with them for 10 months at this point so she had grown accustomed to the material. When it comes to her taking over the vocals it's quite another story. When Tuomas called her and asked her to step in she had 48 hours to learn the lyrics, songs and enter and leaving the stage (If you want a deep dive into it you find a documentary named "Learn this setlist in 48 hours). Might sound easy, but nearly a year earlier she had left her current band. She was burnt out, lost confidence and slightly depressed. So she got this call while at her sisters wedding. I guess this was the push out of the plane. Either the parachute folds out perfectly and you get a good experience or fall face down. Rest is kind of history.

It is abnormal how she made these songs her own and even changed vocal partis to make them more impactful. Yuka is a great drummer. But his insomnia and migraine made that he had to stop and let his good friend Kai from Winter sun step in for him. You saw High hopes, the tribute to Pink Floyd. That evening the guys knew it was tarja's last concert and Yuka had a HUGE migrain. You can see Tuomas nodding fast towards Yuka, to check on him. Having a migrain and playing the drums...HELL. He is thank God still a part of Night Wish, as their manager. Nightwish has no ego's...all of them give their best to make the best music. Emppu doesn't always have to shine or shred technical to be in the spotlight. He can play pretty simple but perfect fitting the music, solo's. Unfortunatly he is very underrated as guitar player. Eric, I'm totally loving your "journey", and IT will get EVEN Better! I, like thousands (...millions?) at this point only discovered NW at the start of the lock down, and have been a heavy convert ever since. However, I have a few tidbits to interject. On behalf of your "apology" from your 1st reaction to "Ghost Love Score", you MAY want to rethink that once you hear the original vocalist, Tarja, and then realize WHY NW did not crack the zeitgeist of North America. Though she is extremely gifted, vocally, she's a very, very one dimensional singer. She was waaaay too classical, and operatic - definitely an acquired taste. I liken Tarja to guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen: yes she's brilliant- but a total 1 trick pony, and after 5 minutes of listening, you know exactly how EVERY next song/solo is going to go. In my personal opinion, SHE was the very thing that held Nightwish back, in the beginning, from reaching a Metallica level of fame. Tarja's replacement, Annette, was a severe back slide: though not horrible, she was a dime a dozen, generic pop/jazz singer, merely filling a place. You'll see. Floor was the missing ingredient, and boy was it THE linchpin. If Tarja is Yngwie; Floor is JEFF BECK; her instincts, phrasing, and technical delivery are always THE PERFECT choice for the track. She's the GOAT. Like Freddie Mercury level GOAT. At this point, it may not be apparent, but as you dive deeper into the catalogue, and start to explore Floor's earlier bands, and later solo endeavors, you will see she's absolutely THE top - or 2 at least, in ability to thrive in ANY/ ALL genres. Yup, no bullsh*t. Anyways, keep up the great reactions: Always fun to watch somebody with a pedigree for rock/metal experience this GREATNESS. \m/
@David_randomnumber
@David_randomnumber 2 года назад
I can't completely agree with this. While Tarja is certainly far from mainstream it was not her ability wich held Nightwish back. In all I've seen from them they always stated that they don't really like big revenues but rather play in clubs close up and personal with the audience. So the main thing preventing them from becoming as big as queen or Metallica is that they didn't want to. They even kicked Tarja out partly because she and her husband constantly tried to push for bigger concerts.
@smutbroker
@smutbroker 2 года назад
@@David_randomnumber: I think you missed my point: IMHO, as an American very familiar with AOR format, and trends - it's absolutely Tarja's style that knee capped NW from the beginning. Her vocal style is very polarizing, and really is an acquired taste. That doesn't mean bad, or good- BUT, it does mean that in America it will not be the "safe bet" to promote on radio air waves TO SELL ADVERTISING. Again, it's no slight to her talent, but is an honest assessment as to "WHY" NW could be overlooked. Since she was the SOLE VOICE of NW, the "blame" or lack of acceptance falls mainly on her 1 dimensional sound (...again, that may sound insulting, but refer back to my Yngwie Analogy.)

Thanks for the comments!! I appreciate it, helps in validation and all that. I think there are always a multitude of rivulets of trouble that can lead to a parting of ways. Everyone thought Yoko broke up the Beatles even though, to a man, it was because they grew in different directions. Maybe in small part due to conflict but rarely. It's usually members growing and experiencing life in different stages that bring different art than that which brought them together. You are probably right, but in a more macro sense, in that the US Radio/Music scene is very tightly controlled, and if you're not one of their "earners", you're relegated to minimal promotion/support. Until the US Radio landscape returns to Programming driving the direction, Sales will continue to dominate the signal/cluster. Plus Americans have completely different listening habits, as I found through Music Research when Stratford did our research. So, there are many reasons NW may not have cracked the US Radio market and most of them are out of the control of the artist and the conduit (radio DJs). But that's just my opinion. Eric

@@smutbroker don’t disagree. I think Annette was an answer to that concern. She was more pop and those two albums are awesome (for what they are) and some of that should have had radio play in the states. Storytime, last ride of the day , song of myself, amaranth all could have been played. Then Floor’s entrance with Endless Forms Most Beautiful should have broken through. Like many in the states, only found them 4 months back and now in my top three with Rush and Pink Floyd. Time signature changes, lyrics and instrumentation on par with no one.

@@smutbroker I think i get your point but on the other Hand you can't get a Nightwish that sound mainstream. Their sound was never mainstream even with Annette. Now they got Floor for 8 years and still nobody really plays them regularly on the radio. You get the maybe one or two songs smuggled in from fans working in the industry but no real advertising. The only real promotion comes from people like Gabriel or Martine so it's pretty much all word of mouth.

When you finally get around to doing The Poet and the Pendulum and i wont be the only one telling you this ,take the time and look into what the song is about first and read the open letters by both Nightwish and Tarja so you can get the full perspective on what the song is about and why its such a masterpiece given the circumstances under which it was written.

As much as I appreciate Jukka Nevalainen's drumming... wait till you see Kai Hahto on full force with Wintersun (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tl5T-glTdXw.html) ... he's my hero when it comes to drumming on the highest (technical) level. I've only got one thing to say about Romaniticide: Best. Banshee. Wail. Ever. About Jukka: Out of every drummer I've ever seen, Jukka is by far my favorite drummer. Why? Because he has the most expressive playing I've ever seen. And no, Jukka was feeling all right for this concert. But it was overall, throughout the tour, that Jukka felt his insomnia was getting to him, simply because his brain would not shut down so he could get a good night's sleep. And because this happened over and over again, it wore him down. Thing is, Jukka didn't like to show the pain he was in, because he wanted to be behind the kit so badly. I really, really hope he gets back on the kit one day, because I really miss his playing style. #IMissThePirate

So good to see you laugh! You have a contagious personality. I noticed you didn't have your eyes closed as much as when you reacted to GLS. Nightwish has a way of doing that. Especially Floor! Floor is just something else isn’t she? I’m 70 now and have only recently found Nightwish, what an absolute revelation! I think it’s easier to appreciate music like this when you actually play yourself, my poison is Guitar, anything from Classical to Metal, I’m still learning - you are always learning. I think a great track of theirs to react to is their version of Phantom of the Opera, but it would be great if you could do a side by side one of Tarja’s version and Floor’s version; it’s really difficult to decide who is better. In the end I gave it to Floor because she has wonderful versatility.

I'm really enjoying your journey into Nightwish. You will find that every song is a new favorite. Then, once you get deep into their catalog, you will find it difficult to pick a favorite. Yes, they are that good. I can't wait for you to get to "Master Passion Greed." It is dark and angry, a 100% emotional release from the band. I think Gabriel's list is a good way to go. It gives time to understand the band before getting into the really deep songs. A lot of people will suggest, "The Poet And The Pendulum." And while I agree it is a masterpiece. It is also an extremely emotional piece of music and it will bring out emotions in the listener. It is also one that understanding the history of the band and the backstory of the song is important. I don't say that to scare you away from the song. I just want to have an idea if what you would be getting into with that song.

You've hit some really good songs ... but you really haven't seen anything yet Sir, lol. Just wait until you hear Yours Is An Empty Hope, The Islander, Kiss While Your LIps Are Still Red, Greatest Show On Earth or Poet and the Pendulum ... or really any of their other songs lol. It's kind of like eating at a good restaurant where every time you try something new it's your favorite meal ever; every song you hear from Nightwish tends to become your new favorite song, lol. This song was the 11th song in their set (you can kind of tell where a song fits in this show because for the first half Floor was in pleather pants and about halfway through she had a wardrobe change and comes back out in a skirt). As Chris stated this show was after she'd been with the band about 10 months, but if you ever catch any of the videos from the first few shows, even then the camaraderie and "fit" between her and the band was other-worldly. But this was her first "major" event I believe and after the 2nd song of the set Marco introduces her to the crowd. If I remember correctly, at this show she was still not officially their lead singer, but you can see looks between Toumas and the others periodically that let you know they saw her as something special and probably weren't going to let her go. For another band to check out I'd suggest Small Town Titans; they do covers of some pretty well known songs and if I had to suggest just one (it's completely the wrong time of year now, but it's still fun to listen to), I'd say to check our You're A Mean One Mister Grinch.

You need to see Troy on stage yet. Nightwish guided me to another dimension in music, a dimension to which I hope you arrive soon. Continue following Gabriel's recommendations to watch very great music by Nightwish and the versatility of Floor. But, hey! Super awesome reaction 😁 😁 😁 Jukka (drummer) it's not angry. He is our showman and bullrider. He's having fun, like everyone else. He is loved. Everyone in this band is so unique and all together are one big party. 😁 Everyone felt good in Wacken, including Jukka. The concert you mentioned, where no one was doing really well, was the last one with Tarja. Nevertheless, Jukka naturally suffers from migraines and insomnia, which is why he now only works for Nightwish backstage and Kai came. Floor's first appearance with Nightwish in Germany in front of 82000 people. She didn't need 2 minutes and had won them all over.

And let's not forget everyone's side projects: From Tuomas, there's his solo project Music Inspired By The Life And Times Of Scrooge (vocals by his wife, Finnish singer Johanna Kurkela) as well as his side project Auri together with Troy and Johanna, as well as the black metal band Darkwoods My Betrothed, of which he's also a member. Marko, of course, fronted Tarot since the 1980s, but if you want to get a little more obscure, he was also in Sinergy. Emppu also had a side project, Brother Firetribe, although he stepped down just before the world shut down in 2020, citing a lack of time due to Nightwish commitments. Then there's Floor's former bands After Forever and ReVamp, new drummer Kai's former band Wintersun, former singer Anette's band The Dark Element... Nightwish isn't just a rabbit hole, it's an entire rabbit warren!

Oh there's more, a lot more. You've just started with Nightwish as there's also Floor's two early bands After Forever (1997-2009) and Revamp (2009-2016), plus her solo stuff. ReVamp was her creation during a shitty period in her life. We have the 2008 financial crash that wrecked her earnings. After Forever broke up in 2009. Her long term relationship with an AF band member broke up and he ended up marrying one of her friends. She suffered a burnout from trying to do too much with ReVamp, songwriter, band management, lyricist, vocalist and so one. Then along comes a desperate Nightwish in 2012 while she's still running ReVamp. This is not reaction-worthy as it's just a low quality fancam, but it's a sense of the rage and the frustration that came out in her music. Just watch it on your own time as it's a good bit of background to her performances in Nightwish. "Misery's No Crime" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SNPesLFTnUg.html She goes through four distinctly different vocal styles in this song. Keep in mind that when this was performed, she was already a member of Nightwish and had been with them for about 16 months.
