There's a clip in the documentary where Bruce Allen was on the phone trying to 'get' Liona Boyd. He says 'yeah, I know she isn't a singer' - they tried to get as many famous Canadians as possible.
I am Canadian and truly thankful for the reminder of the good hearts we have here in our country. Our troubled times right now have overshadowed our hearts. It's nice to be reminded that we are still the loving caring country that we have always been. 🥰
And kudos to David Foster for the arrangement. He fit everyone at the right moments just perfectly. He's said he could hearing Gordon Lightfoot singing the first lines as they were writing the song.
Ah, we are probably near the same age. The 80s were an interesting and special time. It was great that these rich western nations put their money where their mouth was for this. I know Canada has done all it could with its peacekeeping missions too.
Dam neared cried listening to that, I'm a 48 year ole male Canadian Gen X that is still working on a time machine to go back to the 80's. I miss it so much. Times were simple and safety didn't exist, but we survived.
I saw a doc on Anne Murray last week and they talked about this performance. They had little time to get it together and David Foster, the legendary producer then and now, felt if they got Anne on board, the rest would fall into place. They showed one of his team on the phone when he got word Anne was in and he was so excited he jumped around like a little kid.
It wasn't really a response, Quincy Jones asked David Foster if he would do it and the song appeared on the We Are the World album. Perhaps We Are the World was a response to DoThey Know It's Christmas.
When the musicians were singing for this video, David Foster (the Pianist/Director) also a Canadian, told Neil Young that he was a little off tune. Neil responded by saying "Hey Man, that's my style". Neil Young being off-tune was left in. The person you didn't know at the beginning was Dan Hill of "Sometimes When We Touch" fame. John Candy was definitely in this video as was Oscar Peterson, Carol Pope, Ronny Hawkins, Murray McLaughlin and so very many others.
I haven't seen that video in decades. The music of the '80's was great! John,...the "ageless" Byan Adams is still going strong and touring all over the world with his band. He's released several new videos on his RU-vid channel in recent years too. Keep up the great work! Us Canadians appreciate it.

I see no one has mentioned Liona Boyd. A couple of years ago she did a remake of the 70s hit Popcorn. Pretty wild for a 74 year old, you have to watch it just to see the heels.
I was in grade 10 when this came out and was so proud that Canada was represented in supporting the famine relief effort and had such great music artists representing my country.
Understandibly, you wouldn't recognize French Canadian singers like Véronique Béliveau, Robert Charlebois and Claude Dubois. Charlebois was quite a big deal, releasing 21 albums from 1965 to 2010, and composing several film scores. But most of the French-language singers at the time were in a separate famine relief video called "Les Yeux de la faim," and this included folk legend Gilles Vigneault, and a young teenage Céline Dion, already a star in Canada and Europe, but not yet known in the U.S. But, back to Tears Are Not Enough: Some of the singers were one-hit wonders of the time, but most had substantial careers. Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan, Carol Pope, Jane Sibbery and Kim Mitchell are all worth your checking into. Kim Mitchell's solo work as well as his band Max Webster are textbooks for how to make intelligent rock, doing sophisticated stuff while never abandoning their suburban teenage following. Little noticed in the video is the greatest jazz pianist of all time, Oscar Peterson. Few people know that he had a fine singing voice. Liona Boyd is one of the greatest classical guitarists, usually considered the "Queen" alongside the "King," Andrés Segovia (who shared that opinion). Salome Bey was a fine classic blues singer. Ronnie Hawkins, resplendent in his snowy beard, was a major figure of late 1950's Rock'n'Roll. He was Arkansas born, but spent most of career in Canada. He and his Arkansas buddy Levon Helm, and the brilliant Robbie Robertson were hot items in Toronto's notorious Le Coq d'Or, a venue famous for spectacular bar fights. This was long before The Band came into existence.
There is a documentary on the making of this, it's amazing. Covers how the song was written and how they got all the singers together at one time for one day to record this.
I too am your Canadian cousin and I needed to hear that song. We all need to remember that we r so much stronger when we stand together for the good of the world. Bryan Adams and the great songwriter/ producer David Foster wrote the words. There were others not know as singers ( actors ) who were also there, John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy and Paul Schaffer ( David Letterman’s music director )

Some of the other singers were the late great Donny Gerrard who sang lead in the first band David Foster ever played in..Also Alfie Zappacosta, Andy Kim, Lisa Dal Bello who was popular in the 70's and 80's. Kim is also a prolific songwriter.
David Foster and Jim Vallance wrote the music and initial lyrics, Bryan Adams completed the English lyrics, Rachel Paiement (Vallance's wife) wrote the one French verse, Bob Rock & Paul Hyde contributed the song title.

The 80's was an incredible time for music. I was born in 62 and the 80's was my decade. Music was my life at that time. Concerts every weekend. In that 10 year period I went to almost 300 concerts. It was an incredible time to be in your 20's. I can't help but think of that decade and smile. I saw Tom Cochrane and Red Rider close to a dozen times. But one of my favorite bands of that decade was from your neck of the woods. Blue Oyster Cult. I saw them twice. Thanks for doing these videos and keep them coming.
Hey DJ, yeah. I’m a little younger but I started going to concerts in the 80s. My older brother gave me hell at home but he was a great musical influence on me and did drag his little bro to concerts as a jr high schooler. I saw the Who, Stones, the Dead, U2, Pink Floyd and more with him in the 80s. And yessir, Blue Oyster Cult is from Long Island along with the likes of Pat Benitar, Billy Joel, Stray Cats, Dee Snyder from Twisted Sister and many more. Nice trivia knowledge about BOC - a great band.
There's a CBC Doc on the making of the vid that is informative. My fav part is them telling Neil Young to do a retake because he sounded a little flat. Neil's response was "that's my style man". And Ann Murray was so good she was known for only needing one take for her songs. After having her do a number of takes she said something like why the first take is the one to use. I remember a photograph of a starving child crying, with a vulture in the background.. and the story of the man who took that picture, ending up with suicide. It was a horrible moment in time and with that, people are still dying of hunger today

As a Canadian in 1985 and in Grade 2, I loved Don’t They Know It’s Christmas and We Are The World. But Tears Are Not Enough was a mantra of that year - we sang our hearts out in music class with this song in 1985 and 1986. All 3 songs are fantastic! Ps - it’s John Candy and not John Kennedy 😂

Like this a thousand times! There's a good documentary about how this all came together really very quickly - getting everyone to Toronto to record was quite a feat. At the entrance to the studio, a sign was posted that said "Check your egos at the door." John Candy was interviewed by the film crew and he said: 'don't talk to me, I'm not a singer. I'm just here to help out.' That really was the vibe. I also think this is a particularly good song - it's still popular here. 😃 David Foster said he could hear Gordon Lightfoot signing the opening lines when they were writing the song.

I live in hamilton ontario and way back maybe 1974 or so when i was in highschool I saw rush play in the old barton street barn(hockey arena where the hamilton red wings played) and they were backup to nazareth on thei r fly by night tour

I remember this well, but have to admit I only remembered a handful of the participants, so I googled it, and to my surprise Wayne Gretzky and the NHL all stars, ( I assume from that year), were also present. Various other personalities from that period that aren’t singers were also listed and I don’t remember any of them, including John Candy, being in it. Hey, I’m closing in on 71, cut me some slack. On another note, please don’t change a thing with your videos, I’m an enthusiastic supporter.

At the beginning, the musician you didn't recognize, that was Dan Hill. I never did go to a lot of music concerts, but did go to Dan Hill's in Victoria many many years ago. Loved his music in my youth.
Loved it then. Love it still! Such a real sentiment, as well. Seeing the heartbreaking images from Africa brought many around the world to tears, but "Tears Are Not Enough" to really help them! There was such Canadian pride when this was released and, let's face it, it was very well written and performed! David Foster's style was all over it, and he was certainly very well known in Canada at the time. I had to watch it a couple of times. And yes, there were some tears. Thank you again, John. ❤🇨🇦❤
Pianist / Composer David Foster starting off...I've just about worn out his "Symphony Sessions" album, especially the track "Winter Games" which he wrote for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic games.
I doubt if Foster arranged it but the national anthem at the opening ceremony of the Calgary Olympics is the best arrangement of it I've ever heard. First half starts out slow, not so great, but builds to a great crescendo GLORIOUS AND FREE and then into a French section with a large choir and orchestral ending. Brilliant! I actually remember where I was when the Live Aid Concerts were happening. No where near a T.V. Thankfully, my aunt recorded the ENTIRE thing because her daughter’s & I were at a weekend long folk festival. We had an awesome time that weekend & enjoyed those VHS tapes of Live Aid for years ! Awwwww to be 18 again …..yah no thanks 😂😁😉
