One crucial difference is the sheer size of the oval. It's TWICE the size of an American football field, and Australian football is a basically NON-STOP game that is nothing like the American game that involves endless stops and starts. An American football player simply wouldn't have the stamina required in Australian Rules.

The reason the field is oval is because normally it serves as a cricket field, AFL as a game was originally created to keep cricketers fit back in the winter of 1858. The oval shaped AFL field is 148-202 yards long and 120-170 yards wide, while the rectangular NFL field is 100 yards long and 53 yards wide.

Oregon here. Started barracking for the Swans in 2012 after going to a game against North Melbourne in the SCG. We Americans generally say "rooting" instead of "barracking," but rooting is something very different in Australia. 🙂 Regarding injuries, they can be pretty severe. Gary Rohan suffered a compound fracture to his leg in the game I attended.

I emigrated to Australia from the UK back in 1970 and because we lived in the Western Suburbs I automatically chose The Western Bulldogs as my team to barrack for (back then they were named Footscray Bulldogs the town of Footscray was where I lived) also coming from the UK I liked that their colors were red white & blue same as England's colors. I was not a great fan of soccer in the UK but when I saw how exciting and fast paced AFL was I became hooked. Many people think it is made up from a mixture of other games but in truth it has been around for more than 150 years so before most other football games were even thought of, it began as a way for cricket players to keep fit during the cricket off season. Cricket is played during the Summer season and AFL is played during the Winter season. Although AFL is popular all over Aus in New South Wales and Queensland Rugby is more popular...I personally believe that AFL is the BEST football game EVER!
@newbris

FYI it's named League or Rugby League in Australia. Rugby is short for Rugby Union here, which isn't as popular as League.

Australian Rules Football is played on an oval shaped(cricket) field, as it was originally invented to keep cricket players fit in the off season; from there, it quickly became a widespread sport loved by millions of fans. It was the top football code in all states and territories, with the exception of Queensland and New South Wales which were predominantly Rugby League territory.

There's lots of myths that AFL people like to spin. One of them is the 'keep cricketers fit' thing. Football was invented to play football, it had nothing to do with cricket clubs. But the biggest myth is the supposed strength in NSW and Qld. Anyone who thinks Aussie Rules is actually popular in Sydney or Brisbane is delusional. Just check the TV ratings. They are microscopic.

Hi Travis and Susie, with Aussie Rules there are distinctions. The national league is the AFL, and each state/territory have their own leagues; on top of that, there are also metropolitan and country leagues. Aussie Rules is the greatest game ever played, and it's unlike anything you have ever seen.

Also the one suburb can have many clubs and teams playing in different competitions...... EG :- Collingwood has the professional club known as The Magpies. But there are at least 5 other clubs in Collingwood , all known as The Magpies , and all competing in different leagues and competitions, including church competitions ( YCW ), workers comps, unemployed comps ( sponsored by state government and councils ), midweek comps ( mostly for unemployed and homeless people ) and even competitions for companies to field a company team, which often allow other groups and clubs to compete in......so not every team is from a company or business.

I wish more people would discover and follow this sport. Games are played on FS1, FS2 and Fox Soccer Plus. What makes the game more exciting is that the oval ball has a random bounce which can go anywhere so the players have to be on high alert at all times. Also, a tackle can come from any direction.

When you talked about brush burns, I thought about the field in Queenstown, Tasmania. It is a local field, so a lower competition than the AFL. It is called The Gravel because mining a century ago poisoned the local landscape and they couldn't grow grass on the field. It's surface is fine quartz gravel out of the mines. My wife has a former workmate who played there when he was in highschool. He's 60 yet still has scars on his knees. AFL players who started out there are generally good at taking hits and staying on their feet.

Footy is great. Some games are nailbiters, with both teams in a position to win. It's also a fast-paced game with something always happening. The marks are special to watch, but some marks are crucial to stop the other team getting the ball or scoring, so whilst they are not all "spekkies", they are part of what makes the game interesting all game. The only way a goal can be scored is for the football to be kicked between the goal posts. If a player from either side touches the ball as it goes through the goals, it is not a goal, but recorded as a behind. The defenders try to touch the ball if it is a low or ground kick for goal, and the forwards for the kicking team will sometimes guard the defender from touching it, so the "goal square" tussle can be really interesting with the crowd not always knowing what's happened. The play between defenders and attackers in the goal square are a real highlight of the game. The goal umpires are the ones that determine whether the score is a goal or a point and confirmed by the central umpire before the score is recorded, but the umpires can call for a replay if there's doubt. Also, if the ball touches the goal post as it's going through, that is also a point.

first off to answer travis's question, if you run through the goals with the ball or hit it through its only worth 1 point. there are a few things this video doesn't cover, for example the field is the largest field in any sport of this type. AFL players run an average of 12-14 KMs a game, with some getting up around 20Kms a game. there are 22 players a side, but only 18 of them are on the field at one time. you don't tend to get very many serious injuries though obviously it can happen, and when it does it tends to be bad. in regard to tackling, you can tackle hard, but it has to be between the shoulder and the knees.
@roontangdavis2694
@roontangdavis2694 4 месяца назад
I'll add to the last point by saying that any tackle that contracts the player in the back and propels then forward is also illegal. to lessen the likelihood of injury to the spine or neck.

Go Cats! Today is Easter Monday 2024 & you have just posted this video and Geelong Cats have defeated Hawthorn Hawks at The MCG with a crowd of 67,000. The first quarter from Geelong was Amazing! The game had a little bit of everything in it so it would be a great replay to watch. Geelong also celebrated their Forward Tom Hawkins who played his 350th game. His father Jack also played 182 games for Geelong Cats. Geelong Cats won the 2022 Grand Final against the Sydney Swans - Sensational! The long term Captain Joel Selwood retired after the win and he also had just achieved his 350th game milestone. Geelong (“G” pronounced like Giraffe - “Gee-long”) is one of the original oldest clubs, it is my home town club, the most respectful team, they do have best looking players and the best coloured blue & white hoop Guernsey. You should choose Geelong (djil-'long) Cats because they are the greatest team of all, they play the game the way it should be played, they maintain a sustained level of success (they don't don't bottom out), they have a character clause in their policy (no dickheads culture), and they are a regional team (not based in a city) and welcoming of supporters from all over the world. At least 3 of our players are farmers, 1 of which shares my birthday. And 1 or 2 nights before the 2007 grand final, Kelly Clarkson performed at our footy show and said she was going for Geelong! We won by 119 and won 3 of 5 premierships. Thanks for the endorement, Kel! ;) WE ARE GEELONG!!

Scoring: If the ball comes anyway off your player's foot, regardless of how many bounces, and then goes through the goal posts (without touching the posts) - it's a goal (6 points). If the ball touches the inner two posts, goes off any part of a player's body above the knee (of either team) and through the middle posts, or goes through the outer posts, it's a behind (1 point). If the ball touches the outer posts, it's classed as no-score.

It is indeed a high impact game and midfielders will run/sprint upwards of 11 - 14 miles a game. Injuries are commonplace and you very rarely play a game where you come away unscathed. Grass burns are not even an issue and something we would never even think about. Keep up the great work team.

I couldn’t believe that they both had that honour, not just in their lifetime but in the same year. I was more thrilled by this than growing up knowing my mum took Teddy Whitten to school when he was a nipper and talking to him myself as a kid.

If you are interested in this you may like to have a look at the Gaelic games (Ireland) of gaelic football and hurling. Gaelic football is similar to Aussie Rules football, in fact they have international series games between gaelic footballers and aussie rules footballers. The other is hurling which uses a stick like hockey but that's where the comparisons end. I am sure you would love it. My aussie rules team is Hawthorn and when I started watching them in the 90's they had a really good side. A few years ago they had another good team, but recently haven't been so good, but as with all sports teams you follow them through good and bad. I am English by the way, but love sport.

There is at least one live game on a weekend on RU-vid and the season started just a few weeks ago. We set up one team in each American State called the US AFL but I don’t think anyone noticed. This is the first coded game of football in the world. They are elite athletes who can keep up that pace for 90 minutes and not lose any skills. There is nothing else like hearing 100,000 fans roar at the MCG. You just have to be there to know. Your team is Collingwood Magpies or just the Pies. We have the only American player in the league and he signed up before he ever saw a game. I love Mason and we gave him hell because he was that bad but he never stopped trying and learning until he got it. It took him 4 years to get a 1st grade game and now he is an Aussie. So I can’t call him our American Pie anymore.

Games between these teams are always huge, and Collingwood and Carlton are huge rivals in particular which makes for a great game. 😊

Most sports played in Europe and Australia are played on grass and not "turf" and so there are no burns. As you'll see in rugby the grass can be quite slippery and so you can slide a long way. You can only score by kicking the ball between the posts, a bit like soccer.
@distortedsoul27
@distortedsoul27 4 месяца назад
Correct about the kicking. It is the only code of football that requires the ball to be kicked to score maximum points. If it's touched by any player before crossing the line, it's considered a behind.

You can watch it online! That way, if you make it over here,you can sound like a local! Also, there is a USAFL, for some local matches. 6:50 to score a goal (6 points) you have to kick through the middle posts; if you put it through all the posts any other way,you get 1 point.

The other thing about AFL, they going to grass roots towns and take it to regional areas, but the AFL are so particular on what type of ground the players play on, so to avoid any injuries. When they go to places like Cairns, Townsville, Northern Territory, ACT, Tasmania, etc, they have a team of ground specialists that go to the venue 2 weeks before the game, to go over the whole ground and facilities, even to the point they measure the height of the grass. It's not to be played on for 2 weeks before, again to avoid any injury to these professional players. It so the AFL games to keep going to the regional areas and playing for supporters who can't make it to the big venues like the MCG.
@adamparker9765

The game goes back to 1858 though there is speculation it is an adapted version of an aboriginal game called Marngrook so its roots could be 40,000 years or more. The ground is huge , almost twice as big as an NFL ground. That's why you can have 36 players on the ground at the same time. Obviously injuries happen but serious injuries aren't as common as you may think . There's only one medical emergency player per team and they aren't used for serious injuries often. Its fast , skillful, tough and spectacular to watch and is gaining many followers world wide with the US having 150 teams at amature level both mens and womens competitions . Its great to watch because its continuous play like soccer but the teams actually score . The only add breaks occur when a team kicks a goal or when its quarter and half time. Im another Geelong Cats fan . It would be good to follow us as we have been extremely successful in recent times and hardly ever drop down the ladder to far . We have been known for having a lot of old players in our team but are transitioning to a younger player group that is looking pretty exciting.

1. Darren's team, the Geelong (Gee, as in "Jesus") Cats have got fleas. And mange. Better to pick a good side like the St Kilda Saints. Based in Melbourne, better colours - red, black and white, and no fleas. 2. Back in the 1850s, when the game began, Aussie Rules football was played on cricket ovals. The shape stuck. In fact, the most famous footy stadium is the MCG - the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where footy is played in the winter, and cricket is played in the summer. 3. Goals: A goal (6 points) is scored by kicking the ball "clean" through the big sticks (the big white posts). The ball can bounce on the ground, but must not be touched by any hand or body part, nor touch the post on the way through. If the ball comes off a hand/body, touches the post, or is carried through the big sticks, it's a behind (1 point). Behinds: If the ball is kicked through, touched through, or carried through the small outer sticks, it's just a behind (1 point). No score: If the ball touches the outside post on the way through it's a no score, and is declared out of bounds. (It's actually quite simple when you see it in action.) 4. Yes, injuries are common enough. There's usually a couple of players taken off the field per game due to injury. No, "grass burns" are not an issue; that's pretty much the least of your worries in this game There are strict tackling rules in place to guard against serious injury, especially concussion. (Although, granted, as a newbie to AFL, it's hard to see anything but total chaos on the field. Think of Aussie Rules as "controlled chaos" - it's a very Aussie game.) Re AFLW - ah yeah, the Aussie Rules gals are tough. No place for trigger-happy snowflakes. 6. Rules for free kicks from infringements are rather simple, but require a lengthy blurb to be clear. It's better to watch a few games and it will slowly become clear. Kinda. 5. The Grand Final is the last game of the finals series, and it decides the winner for the year. The whole season comes down to this one last game. It's a biggie! 7. Re seeing more AFL, I suggest looking at some RU-vid show reels of star players to get a feel for the game. Look up Dustin Martin, Buddy Franklin, Eddie Betts or Gary Ablett Jnr, as a start.

6:21 The many ways to score may be confusing at first, but the only way to score a goal and get the full 6 points is to kick the ball with your foot (or shin) between the two large posts (without touching the post) that your opponent is defending. If the ball is touched by anything other than the foot/shin of your own team before it crosses the line, then you score only 1 point and the opposition get possession of the ball.
