He might have been the biggest in football but to the Dutch he was much bigger than football. He has enriched the Dutch language with expressions and sayings, he was a rebel who changed the position of football players towards club and national team, he was a style icon in the 70's, he was the first to lease a car because he made the sponsor contract for his Citroen SM up that way, he snubbed the fascist Franco regime in Spain by naming his son "Jordi", a forbidden name in Spain because it's a Catalan name and San ordi is the patron saint of Catalunya, he got Cruijff courts all over the country. It was quite a character, not always an easy one to deal with, a great friend but also a terrible enemy to have and not a forgiving one. Easy going but imposing at the same time, a great communicator despite not speaking any language correctly. He never respected any hierarchies but was very humble at the same time. Extraordinary man in every way.

There are dozens of famous "Johan Cruijff wisdom quotes" used by so many people, almost all Dutch 🇳🇱 people including who are not in to football ... am not kidding.
He's done a lot in his life and most Dutch people know at least one of his quotes. Like 'Elk nadeel heb z'n voordeel' (Every disadvantage has its advantage) or 'Vaak moet er iets gebeuren, voordat er iets gebeurt' (Often something needs to occur before something happens). For everyone who doesnt speak Dutch it is not very well known that some things Cruijff said in interviews are basicly part off the Dutch dictionary. It doesnt go well in translation, but makes sence in Dutch... Sort off. He did it in Spanish/Catalan aswell. Like his famous words: En un momento dado, wich is grammaticly wrong but it kinda makes sence. My favorite one that does work in translation, he said as a coach: The ball is my office. May we never forget him!

Always difficult to see these tributes. I hate this day but I understand that some persons are leaving us. Sometimes I wish I could keep them in a box and use his wisdom so now and then. I am happy with all the content and books they wrote about him as his spirit is still alive. For me I do not talk about the greatest as it doesn't do any justice to any of them. His vision changed the game forever and he gave it to many ambassadors that take it to another level. See Pep with Man City and so on. I always loved his simplicity. That humbleness show how great he was.

Andre Hazes sr who is the artist also sang Wij houden van Oranje We love Orange) the EC 88 song for the Dutch team that is now pretty much a Dutch Anthem for football. Cruijff is a legend, not only for his football talent but also as an analyst who had an unique way of saying things that is known here as Cruijffiaans.

it's not just ajax fan that respect cruijff. hell, i don't even really like football (except for ek/wk and watching it in an actual stadium instead of on tv) and *i* think he was a great player and human being.
