Exactly this. That is why this public service broadcast channels are so important! Of course they also have their own scandals (like corrupt intendants acting in their own financial interests), but structures have enough checks and balances fortunately to uncover such incidents and self-heal via reforms and continuous improvements. Those who want to abandon public broadcast with populist paroles just because it is not 100% flawless are the true enemies of free speech and democracy.

‚Die Anstalt‘ means Asylum and Claus von Wagner (on the left) and Max Uthoff (the „American“ on the right) are the 2nd generation who host this show since 2014. Max Uthoff by the way was a lawyer before he became a comedian. That explains the lawyer joke at 0:53 min. It started as ‚Neues aus der Anstalt‘ (News from the Asylum) in 2007 where the scene was an asylum and the host (Urban Priol) was the head oft the asylum and the guests (other comedians/satirists) played the role of psychiatry's inmates because the things they said seems to sound so insane that it can’t be real. But in reality it’s all the ‚insane‘ political truth
@thetaleteller4692
@thetaleteller4692 Год назад
Some more context: In addition of "Anstalt" in meaning of Asylum, it is also part of the term "Fernsehanstalt" referring to "public television broadcaster". The station (ZDF) is similar to BBC in UK.

@@technoscout Thats a myth pretty sure. "Die Anstalt" derived from "Neues aus der Anstalt" which started in 2007. People from the ZDF refer their station internally as "Anstalt" as a running gag between a madhouse and "Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts" (tv station in public property). Migration was not a huge topic back then. Already in his first episode they got their knighthood by the presence of "Dieter Hildebrandt", one of the sharpest minds political cabaret of Germany has ever seen. Also to mention from back then, "Georg Schramm", he was the best when the audience stopped laughing - while the shock of truth was setting in.

"Anstalt" in German has two meanings, that are partly relatet: The first one is an institution which is sponsored by the state and taking care of matters of public concern: road savety, workspace safety, telecommunication. The second meaning is more in the lines of a mental asylum (which might be as well sponsored by the state). From my point of view, the name of the pregramm has bben chosen with this in mind.

It's just not the truth in this case. Read the Wikipedia article about Mohammad Mossadeghs election. Paramilitary groups bared the opposition from entering parliament, and then the socialist changed the constitution. Saying Mohammad Mossadegh was democratically elected is like saying Hitlers empowerment law was democratically decided, even though the communist could not enter parliament. In both cases the opposition was kept from voting by force, without legal base. P.S. Stalin had tanks in Iran at the time.

Been watching geopolitics and global issues for 30-40 years now. This thing keeps repeating and only few can see through the context and recognize false information spread, narrative distortion and media manipulation. I saw that in Iran, former Yugoslawia, Ukraine and in many other countries. Since I am multi-culturally upbringing (my parets countries, country of upbringing and current residence...) I see the different kinds of indoctrinations countries all around the world perform on their populace in school, in media and in newspapers for different IQ kinds of audiences. It is always the same, then you argue the war in Iran is not about terrorism, democracy whatever, but about geopolitics, economy and oil, just to be disregarded as a conspiracy theorist and idiot. Then a few years later the same happens elsewhere and it keeps repeating... and every time the bulk of the populace thinks 'this time it is real and plausible'. Aslso watched the Taiwan conflict closely and Ukraine... and it is always the same... spin up narrative... and as long as one can convince the majority of the polulation about the narrative, it will be fine - and later nobody can change anything back, even if they realized the truth. I fact-check a lot as a hobby using video feeds, google maps and original sources. It is insane how the truth is warped and falsified, but the voters still believe it. The USA can do whatever they want and nobody in the west has the possibility of doing anything against it. And most evidence is also supressed by shadow bans and the like.

In 1986 a satire show was banned by Bavarian TV because it was about the accident in Tchernobyl. The Bavarian governor was Franz Josef Strauß and he was a huge fan of nuclear power. So some shows have been banned in the past, also in east Germany, today no politician could do that or face a huge shitstorm. Today, such a show could not be stopped anymore because it would be uploaded on youtube immediately and everybody could see it. Technically, that Shah was already the king of Iran during Mosaddegh's rule, but at that point had become more of a symbolic figurehead. The CIA ousted Mosaddegh to bring the Shah into full power. Also, the U.S. and other world powers could've easily helped to prevent the Ayatollah's rise and keep the Shah in power...but this was right when the Shah got the idea to nationalize Iran's oil fields like Mosaddegh before him, so he too had to go. And the Western powers thought the Ayatollah would be an easier puppet to control. Just by the way: I'm German and, together with my girlfriend, we`ve been enthusiastic Scotland fans for years, we've spent many holidays there, each for three or four weeks. I love this typical Scottish accent, even if I don't always understand every single word straight away, especially when it has its own special pronunciation.

German Comedy is dead. It was good though. But critical voices like Volker Pispers are gone. And reasonable people cant take the stuff on public TV serious, they bash people unnecesarily and in unsophisticated ways, like calling them names....while being oddly silent and soft in critizizing the government, and as we all should now comedy only is good and funny when it gets to the borders and simply speaking about stuff others are uncomfortably to speak out... the previously mentioned,, thats simply people pleasing, whispering sweet nothings, popular positions. neither intersting nor helpful and sometimes even toxic ( people bashing).

I really appreciate the work of 'Who Is Mert?' when you bring these great artists into mind (Volker Pispers and co.)! If I ask myself if there could be a reason why they are found especially in Germany, I could imagine that it's probably because Germany was less envolved in wars in the last decades making it easier to think (and even make jokes) about their background. Anyway, there are no such sharp and critical artists left in Germany. Nowadays cabaret runs 24/7 in media - but unfortunately not from artists and not meant to be cabaret... (Sorry for my bad english and thanks for your videos!) With best regards, HU

German comedians have found out that they don't need to invent anything. Telling mere facts about politics makes the audience laugh. Because if they don't laugh, they have to cry about the monstrosities they are hearing. I dunno if other countries have comedians using a similar style.

German satire can be found everywhere on TV in terms of quality. We have a truly functioning media landscape that exposes grievances spot-on. And yet, there are more and more idiots who actually claim that we live in a dictatorship. Such a statement is a disgrace. Especially public television offers a wide range of fact-based programs, and I would greatly wish for this type of reporting to be present in even more countries around the world.
@Muck006
@Muck006 Год назад
When governments start censoring opinions - under the guise of "fighting hate-speech" or "preventing misinformation" - you ARE living in a dictatorship! Modern technology allows for better control, so you only need to "cancel" dissidents instead of "actually ending them" (or locking them up). German public broadcasters have a RUNDFUNKSTAATSVERTRAG, which ALWAYS includes a REQUIREMENT to "be objective" ("umfassende Berichterstattung") when it comes to NEWS ... but they havent been doing that for decades, which you can easily see how they BASH EVERYTHING RIGHT-WING as EVIL ... just look for *THOUGHT-TERMINATING CLICHÉs* ("Totschlagargumente") in their reporting and you can see this easily, because the point of TTCs isnt "reporting truth" but rather to CONDITION and INDOCTRINATE those who "listen and BELIEVE" (the "thought-terminating" bit) and to OTHER/OUTCAST those targeted (by the cliché). If you had any clue you would recognise this as TWO-COLLECTIVE-THINKING ... from one of the most evil ideologies ever: COMMUNISM.

A man like Volker Pispers would not be possible nowadays. He would be called a right-wing extremist, a Putinist, a Schwurbler or a Querdenker. That is something Mr. Pispers said himself in one of his rare interviews. So no, German Satire is in a extraordinarily bad shape as of now. And just to be clear, before the accusations start: I am vaccinated, condemn the invasion and don't vote for AFD. It is possible to see bad things on both sides of the aisle.

Nowadays, "Die Anstalt" (previously "Neues aus der Anstalt") is the gold standard of political satire on German TV. We definitely have a lot of great comedians in Germany, both in the entertainment/humour department as well as the more "serious" socio-political satire. But with Volker Pispers and "Die Anstalt" you already picked the greatest of the great. "Die Anstalt" is known for very well researched and fact-checked, hard political satire with a touch of comedy thrown in to make it less dry. Since Max Uthoff and Claus von Wagner (the guys from this clip) took over the show in 2014 they always have a theme for each episode. They always have about 3 guests and do a lot of ensemble play, weaving together a narrative around the topic. And in nearly every episode they do one of their infamous white board sketches like the one you just saw. Sometimes they have special guests in the show, ie. people affected by the topic like refugees or handicapped people.

Love that you choose Die Anstalt, it"s my absolute favorite I just wish more people, mainly those sitting right from the middle, would watch it. Because they are not just pointing at other countries, they regulary "rip into" German behaviour, be it society or politics as well. So I hope you keep wtaching them and maybe get others to join as well. Like the comment "don't they have a shredder' is (what I think) an allusion to the fact that some things have been shredded in Germany, for example NSU files.

Would you mind elaborating your views on the differences between British/Scottish satire and comedy compared to German cabaret? I always thought about British political comedy as pretty ... impious(?), to the point, but charming. Yet you seem surprised about the openness and clarity of German political cabaret. I am a huge fan of the Anstalt and Max Uthoff. I appreciate his clearness. But for me, he is overacting sometimes. I absolutely recommend Hagen Rether and Georg Schramm. Id be willing to contribute to subs if some more people would be interested.

These two are gold. I've seen both of them live on stage with their respective solo programs, and they are simply amazing. Political satire at its best. Same as Volker Pispers. Never missed one of his performances. Sadly, he retired like so many others. I'm not sure if their programs are available with subs, but you definitely need to check out one of the icons and fathers of German political satire: Dieter Hildebrandt (Notizen aus der Provinz / Scheibenwischer)and "Münchener Lach und Schießgesellschaft" (from the days when Hildebrandt was active and later when Henning Venske was active). In deed in Germany it is called "Political Cabaret", to somewhat distinquish it from simple satire. It this balance of commedians telling the hard truth without consequences, when wrapping it in a sketch (almost like a successor of the middle-age Jester who was sometime the only one brave enought to tell a king the bitter truth). It also has something of the German "da bleibt dir das Lachen im Halse stecken" (the laughter get's stuck in your throat)... it is presented in a funny way... but when you realize it in deed is true you are sometimes irritated, if you should continue lauging or start crying...
