@@camanou1430 Exactly. Those last few years before his retirement, he even basically toured with the same program, a "best of" of 30 years, most of it still relevant, still the same, still an issue, same as when he started. And especially in the second half of the show - the more preachy, more radical parts that usually are hard to find online - his frustration with nothing changing became palpable over time, before he quit the stage, temporarily at first.

How much we have already gotten used to the US American "dictate of history" can be seen from the fact that you describe Volker Pispers as "brave". In a functioning, stable democracy it should actually be perfectly normal for there to be different views or opinions on certain processes. However, if Mr. Pispers were to publish his analyzes in an American newspaper, he would probably have to expect a visit from Homeland Security... That's the terrible thing: That the attacks of September 11, 2001, which were undoubtedly terrible and inhumane, were used to destabilize the Middle East for decades and at the same time to turn the USA into a quasi-media dictatorship in which those who thought differently were declared enemies of the state... Edit: It has been known for decades that the USA defends the patents of US companies tooth and nail, but regularly ignores those of companies based abroad. There are certainly British companies whose patents have been confiscated by US courts...

Interesting to see your reaction, and interesting to see the Volker Pisper renaissance lately. I really enjoyed your video, of course the accent is delightful ;-) But it's especially to see how someone with an outside perspective reacts to these monologues. Long ramble incoming, because I come from a family with a big shared interest in political satire and Kabarett: I'm German (with a Norwegian family background, so maybe with an inch more distance to German culture as a whole, mid 30s now), and just old enough to have regularly watched the original airings of Volker Pisper's "shows" (for lack of a better term) on TV during my teen years. He was coming from traditional "political Kabarett" as an art form, which usually was quite minimalistic in style, and meant to be candid and brave, going waaay back, even before Weimar Republic times, iirc. My parents and I used to determine the quality of a Kabarett artist like this: "the better they are, the more painfully your laughter will die in your throat". Artists in that tradition usually didn't have a lot of props and didn't move around much for performance or effect, their sarcastic monologue in itself was the point. The exceptions: If they were impersonating certain characters while revealing uncomfortable truths along the way (could be famous politicians, usually domestic ones because this also usually heavily relied on regional accents and party politics - Mathias Richling was quite famous for impressions of late 90s/early 00s German politicians - but also generic members of the society from a specific political spectrum, as was often practised by Georg Schramm, who was a regular cast in "Die Anstalt" before also retiring several years back, he had a "disappointed elderly social democrat who can't quite shake his idealism despite history biting him in the butt" persona, a "former military and staunchly conservative with simplistic worldviews" persona and so on - he was subtle, but brilliant). I see Volker Pispers as maybe a precursor of the shows (yes, that term really works here) more common on German TV nowadays - on one hand, we have "Die Anstalt", heavily focused on the educational aspect, using statistics and graphs and props to really drive home the facts, and on the other, we have Jan Böhmermann, who is a peculiar mix of actual comedian - complete with his love of the spotlight and zany stunts - and investigative journalist, unapologetically "woke" (can you tell I don't like that term and the atmosphere of the so-called culture wars, despite being openly left-wing myself?) and very candid, who will not shy away from actively stirring the pot with his team himself. Volker Pispers retired quite early and went back to a life away from stage, allegedly saying that he'd "said everything he had to say". I could get a sense of him repeating himself in the later years, of course his words never stopped being true, so I think he just made an astute analysis. With his level of insight and foresight, his decision just seemed logical to me, but I do miss him on the stage. We do have some people in Germany who still toe the line between Kabarett and comedy and try to appeal to the former conservative majority slowly drifting to the populist right, exacerbated by the culture wars rhethoric. I'd sort Dieter Nuhr and most of his guests into that category, even though I know people who still like him (but are slowly running out of excuses for his repetetive "pub regulars" vocabulary, "Stammtischparolen", as we say in Germany, meaning repetitive populist positions so simplistic that even people who are old and boring enough to visit the same pub with the same people every week can grapple them while drunk). I'm personally not up in arms about him yet, but Jan Böhmermann (the zany investigative one) recently produced a parody of Nuhr's shows on his own channel and that was so unbelievably cringe (while actually being quite on point!) I wanted to throw up. Possibly in a good way. And then there's someone like Hagen Rether, pretty openly to the left of the political spectrum - I have to admit, I haven't seen him since the pandemic - who is a pianist and songwriter (also a tradition in oldschool German Kabarett), and scores very high marks on the "how much does it hurt when my laughter dies on its way out?" scale imho. Weird mix of extremely dark sense of humour and almost esoteric, drawn-out, hard-to-watch performances, but when he hits, he hits hard, quite similar to Volker Pispers in that. He actually once performed with the symbol of the German unemployment agency printed in black on a white circle on a red armband (yup, he really went there!) during times of high unemployment, and he refused to accept certain awards for ethical reasons, things like that. Lastly, I mused a lot about what British sarcasm and German sarcasm have in common, or where the differences lie. Neither laugh at their own jokes like US Americans seem to do. But correct me if I'm wrong: I got a feeling that British people use humour, especially sarcastic humour, in the actual original Latin meaning of the word: as "moisture"(or should we rather say, uh, "lubricant"?) to make a bitter pill go down more easily. German sarcasm isn't meant to make anything easier, it would rather be used in a destructive way, ranging from mild to nuclear, including self-destruction. Ah well... Telling, isn't it? 😬 Anyways, if you want brutal, on-the-nose, dry - yeah, German Kabarett is your thing. I hope it never dies completely, at least not in spirit. What I miss about German humour is a dash of weirdness and absurdity to fluctuating levels of darkness that British Islands people (and folks in the Nordic countries, for that matter) do quite brilliantly. Germans can either do superficial and lighthearted, or they can do savagely sarcastic. There's only little room for other flavours... Can't have it all, I guess. Thanks for reading my novel 😆 Looking forward to part 5!

There's another interesting patent story about the company Bayer. After WW1 (1, mind you) the US government declared, unilaterally, that the patent for Aspirin held by Bayer, was now a US patent as part of the war reparations because of Bayer's involvement in producing both explosives as well as mustard gas. That Germany was just the first, but not the most proliferous user of mustard gas was conveniently ignored. That "honor" goes to the French who killed more than 30000 soldiers with mustard gas. Thanks to the prevailing winds on the French battlefields blowing relatively consistently from southwest to northeast. With the German lines being almost always to the north and east of the allied lines. So after the war Bayer was dusallowed to sell Aspirin under their own name (yepp, it was developed by them) for measly short time of nearly 70 years. Then in 1995 Bayer was given the opportunity to *buy back it's own patent* from the US companies that had inherited it from their predecessors. For the measly sum of 4 billion dollars. Just st so that Bayer was allowed to sell its own product under its own product name in the USA again. Funny, isn't it, that the patent protection would have run out in the next five years anyway, unless the US American owner company would have renewed it. But Bayer wanted to make certain, so they bought back their own patent. Funny, isn't it? 😮🤯🤔

The Americans also confiscated masses of chemical and engineering patents and trade secrets from Germany after WW2 (see Operation Papreclip) and gave about 3000 German scientists and engineers a choice of "either you pack your cases and are ready to emigrate to the USA in the morning or you stay here and get tried for Nazi war crimes". That was how US companies got a massive boost after the war.

Comparing Volker with comedians and other satirists? That simply doesn't work. The essence of satire lies in humorously narrating reality, spiced with one's own opinions and perspectives. Comedy, on the other hand, is just some fantasy someone came up with. So, let me compare Volker to other forms of satire and also to cabaret. In Germany, there are several formats that work with satire. These include Extra3, Die Anstalt, ZDF Magazin Royal, Hagen Rether, Die Carolin Kebekus Show, and many others. The difference often lies not in the quality but in the style of presentation and the topics covered. For example, 'ZDF Magazin Royal' mainly deals with human rights, the significant gaping problems we face due to not properly implementing our constitution, and so on. On the other hand, 'Carolin Kebekus' more frequently focuses on topics like gender equality, feminism, and related subjects. 'Die Anstalt,' also points directly at the sore spots. However, it does so in a very comprehensive and detailed manner (similar to a Pispers show). 'Extra3' mainly deals with domestic politics and addresses shortcomings. As for 'Hagen Rether'... well, if there's anyone who can inherit Volker's throne, it would probably be Hagen. Even though he leans more towards cabaret, as his performances always include a musical component.

Hey Mert, thanks so much for reacting to Volker's programme. My dad worked in the secret service in Germany in the late 90's and 2000's here in south Germany. He knew a lot of stuff that was going on with America, Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Back then I was simply too young to realize what was going on. In the 90's I can remember seeing TV reports of burning oil fields in Iraq. But I was way too young to understand what was going on. But yeah, the Americans are kind of untouchable. My ex girlfriend also was obsessed with America, she always called it "easy living", much better than Germany. I've got one other question because I really like your Scottish accent as well as I can hear it when Amy MacDonald is having an interview, you just cannot "not hear" her accent :D So in Assassin's Creed Valhalla there's a character called "Brigit" and she's also from England but in order to keep the confusion alive there are no subtitles. Can you confirm that this is ancient Scottish or is this a Welsh accent? I just don't know. Here's a short video: ru-vid.comwPr_-MRBMJs I'd love to read your reply. Thanks so much in advance and greetings from Germany :)

There is not even any need to fact check for some of us. Most of it is established knowledge to those who are sufficiently interested in geopolitics and what's happening in the world. I can just recommend to people to keep informing themselves at media outlets from all kinds of diverse sources. Even top quality news outlets are biased in most countries. Some newspapers even for example have paragraphs in their journalists employment contracts to unconditionally support the trans-atlantic treaty (including NATO endeavours in Ukraine), like for example germanies biggest boulevard newspaper 'Bild Zeitung'.

A jingle truck was “blown up by mistake”: $15,000. A controlled detonation broke eight windows in a mosque: $106. A boy drowned in an anti-tank ditch: $1,916. A 10-ton truck ran over a cucumber crop: $180. A helicopter “shot bullets hitting and killing seven cows”: $2,253. Destruction of 200 grape vines, 30 mulberry trees and one well: $1,317. A wheelbarrow full of broken mirrors: $4,057. A child who died in a combat operation: $2,414. These are among the payments that the United States has made to ordinary Afghans over the course of American military operations in the country, according to databases covering thousands of such transactions obtained by The Intercept under the Freedom of Information Act. Many of the payments are for mundane incidents such as traffic accidents or property damage, while others, in flat bureaucratic language, tell of “death of his wife and 2 minor daughters,” “injuries to son’s head, arms, and legs,” “death of husband,” father, uncle, niece."

Enercon, a german wind turbine manufacturer and leading developer has been spied out by the Echelon system in order to get the technology for the US. Today GE holds essential Enercon patents for the US. US America has a law, which allows to seize anything they consider a national strategic asset. Interests that are more valuable for the US than WTO or UN rules or international law, more valuable than any treaty signed even with allies. So technology theft among allies, spying on the chancellors private phone calls etc. ... get used to it. That's the new normal. Volkers audience does not hear the facts he's playing with for the first time. People going to a political cabaret are usually well educated and informed. So it's easy for him to pick from all the memories his audience already has about events, news, scandals and public facts. He's only talking and combining public facts. The Enercon story isn't public in the sense that there is hard evidence, except one knows the story from inside Enercon. So, what Volker also does, he often speaks the mind of his audience .... or better, he knows their reaction. When people applaud him them probably for daring to speak his/their mind. It works because the public picture of america as projected by the german news or politicians differs so much from what people already have witnessed. So many things don't feel right for the people when it's about US foreign policy but the political, military and economic affiliation with the US makes us move along with it and forget about all the details. Some people may have went there to feel their heart beat again like they were not already 'established'. Have the US committed war crimes? Or genocide? Will they ever deal with it? Maybe like the germans did? The black, brown and native community in the US probably will say queue up and wait in the line ...

I don't know how familiar you are with his work. He started to play cabaret when Kohl was elected chancellor. His goal was to do some good, educate the people about politics, and maybe convince them to vote people into office who want to do some good for everyone. When Merkel became chancellor, he said to his audience, I know you, now. You just want to suffer, but I will not be part anymore. He played the last shows and then retired. His own audience broke him. In an interview, he said, he saw his audience laughing at every dumb thing the elected leaders they voted for did. He saw them stop laughing and become quiet, like in parts of this video. He always said to them, you have the power to change all that, but when they left the show they voted against their own interests again and again. I can't blame him, when I see people voting for a party because they want to be "on the winning side" or how some misfits were able to convince enough people in the UK to leave EU and destroy the future for the youth. Nigel Farage is ashamed that he has so much money but can't spend it properly, I heard yesterday ... lol.
