I should also say. I have no proof of this, but I'm convinced they didn't even start to think about a storyline before Rough / Navillera / Fingertip. Somewhere in there. Source was such a little company, and they did struggle until Me Gustas Tu. The fansong "My Buddy" on the Flower Bud almost was intended as a farewell song to their fans, in case the comeback did poorly and they would have to disband. So there's no way (in my opinion) that Source had any sort of focus on a continued storyline when they had to struggle to survive that first year. Also, when you consider the other potential names and debut songs they were toying with using, it's so differet than what Gfriend ended up being. I think they lucked out with all of this! And thank god they did! But yeah! I think they retrofitted the earliest MV's into the storyline though, so there's things to pick up on for sure!

Wow, I can really see you are slowly turning into a Buddy. Haha For the story, the School Trilogy (Glass Bead, Me Gustas Tu, Rough) is one story alone. It's like their first arc. Glass Bead = School days, Me Gustas Tu = Summer breaks, Rough = Graduation. This trilogy acts as their innocent and pure state before things happen (Love Whisper, Navillera). Glass bead is really a throwback and homage to early 2nd gen Kpop, specifically SNSD. There are major similarities with SNSD's debut song Into the New World, which is probably among the most iconic Kpop songs of all time. I'd also wager that this was to capitalize on the fact that SinB and Jessica, a former SNSD member, look quite similar, something that netizens were quite hyped about before Gfriend debuted. As the internet is wont to do, people obviously got angry, and there were claims of plagiarism, though a look at Glass Bead's comment section would show that most SONEs embraced Gfriend since they liked the sound and recognized that SNSD had already moved past this stage of their career. From what I remember reading, the hate actually got so bad that the original MV had to be taken down and reuploaded since it was dislike bombed, and Soumu wanted to give the girls a fair chance. Conceptually, Gfriend's debut stood out for taking a fairly novel and unused concept of powerful innocence. Power came from their choreography, and innocence came from their MV. I don't think it's an understatement to say that Gfriend really brought back the idea of making choreography that was hard-hitting and sharp for girl groups since girl groups at the time really did not do the kind of stuff we see today. Innocence was also interesting in a time that was saturated with cute and sexy concepts. Gfriend members are cute, but they're cute in the sense that youths and children are almost inherently cute, rather than the enforced cuteness from bright colors and such that characterized other cute concepts. This took advantage of the facts that the girls were still in high school and that the company had no budget. Me Gustas Tu is a continuation of Glass Bead in many ways and takes advantage of the summer season to continue many of the ideas started in Glass Bead. The MVs look quite similar, and the themes are also the same. They're simply the daily lives of teenagers: carefree, playful, and innocent. The choreography also continues to push girl group choreographies harder, and the sound remains distinctly nostalgic. Indeed, early Gfriend rides on the feeling of nostalgia to create a place in the saturated market of Kpop. Me Gustas Tu is also when the girls truly became popular when a fancam went viral. My words cannot give justice to the events of the fancam, so I'd instead recommend that one watch it for oneself. It is the most viewed fancam of Me Gustas Tu and is infamous among the Buddy community. Many dislike bringing it up in the view that it depreciates the efforts of the girls while others believe that it was nonetheless instrumental in bringing the girls into public attention. Regardless, Me Gustas Tu was a major success that gave Soumu the money it needed to provide the girls with more. The next MV Rough is markedly better produced than the earlier MVs. My knowledge is insufficient and my words unclear, but I hope that I have provided a bit of a framework to view Gfriend's early releases.

From what I know they once said that their outfit in Glass Bead only cost $15 and their makeup is cheap therefore they can't fall asleep cause will ruin it. From there come their last year comeback Fever all of their outfit cost over a thousand dollars, Eunha dress alone cost $6000, and that was before they join BigHit. Also Yerin own a black card which only privileges to people that are big spender. Now I wonder how much does their black and white dress cost in Apple especially the yellow long dress that Yerin wore in the MV that does look expensive as hell.

there are 4 groups get to debut wearing expensive brands, didn't get any type of privilege; GFRIEND, MAMAMOO, SEVENTEEN, BTS. ( seventeen debut budget was $5, cause almost bankrupt. Source company was a little company and they were struggling on finance, etc). couldn't afford earpiece and vehicles, got their companies out of bankruptcy. Despite how unknown their companies were and how unsure their future looked. they are all still active today. and they reached all success only because of pure talent. I respect these groups

Gfriend did come from very humble beginnings and fought their way to the top. What set them apart was the fact that, amongst the waves of cute groups of 2015, They came in with this powerful choreography that wasn’t really seen in girl groups, and Their music had This classical strings influence on it. And you’re right about Gfriend’s music feeling nostalgic, their earlier title tracks did that. Apparently the girls practiced Glass Bead nonstop for 8months to get the synchronized steps. Gfriend actually had a fancam of Me Gustas Tu go viral back in 2016. They had to perform at an event on a rainy day and the stage was very slippery. The girls repeatedly slipped/fell throughout the entire performance but kept getting back up and performing. They were applauded for their professionalism and perseverance. And it also helped bring more attention to the group. They continued to work hard and came back with amazing music and the rest is history. Haters will say Gfriend got popular because of that fancam but I think one of the girls said it best: we didn’t become known because we fell, we became known because we go back up. There is a line in Glass Bead that goes “I may seem like a clear glass bead. But I won't break that easily” and I think that clearly defines Gfriend.

There’s one in Fingertip and it’s clear, Crossroads and at that point it’s starting to get grey/dark, then in Apple it turns red. So the lyric “translucent glass bead turns red” and “Infusing with color all my grey decisions” can be linked back to the start when they were “pure”. Talking about me gustas tu. You should watch the viral fancam of them dancing on the stage with me gustas tu when raining and the stage is wet. Yuju fall many time and SinB fall one time but still get up and continue to perform. After these happen, gfriend become famous. Talking about this, when they appear a show for interview. The mc ask would them like to skip the question of "falling on the stage" because when interview they been asking lot of this question. Then Yuju brought up about someone asking her is she falling purposely. Yuju answer them "is rude and that no no". The other members are shock and they dont like when someone asking this question again. Sowon say this is a really sad things for them and no joke.

Regarding "leg dances," SNSD "Tell Me Your Wish" set the standard. However, the kick in "Glass Bead" echoes the one in "Into the New World," the previous "leg-kick dance." In fairness, SiStar "Alone" is very lower-body focused; the choreography was what slit skirts were invented for. But yes, GFriend is the successor to SNSD.

So yeah they just start with PE uniforms, they only use lip balm as their make up, and on their trainee days their company only hired two Trainers for SinB and Yuju, Dance for SinB and Vocal tips for Yuju so basically Yuju and SinB was the trainers of GFRIEND which was funny coz they're known for their powerful vocals and amazing choreographies plus SinB is the reason why Gfriend is so synchronized Edit : and I think they recorded Glass beads on Bighit's recording studio

as I can remember gfriend debut (me gustas tu) become trending because of yuju's flying shoe during their performance (debut showcase). They got a lot of attention during that time, which also the reason I became a buddy especially a yuju biased.
